The fellow who ran the place for years has retired and sold the business to some new fellows. The old owner hear-tell retired and moved down to a farm he owns in Kentucky. The old owner wasn't that friendly, but the new guys do seem to be much more so. Still the same great hot dogs, same great fries when fried extra crispy, prices haven't changed yet, and neither has the decor and ambiance. Give this place and the new owners a try. read more

My last visit, I ordered my usual two hotdog with fries, a cup of cheese, a chili and a tamale. It is under new ownership, and the new owners were friendly and accurate on the order. Food was hot and tasty. No quality changes at least so far. Hopefully they won't mess with something that works really really well which is why I no longer purchase hotdog from the local place. When you think of the best places to eat in Orland Park (and any of the south suburbs), WIDENS is at the top of that list! Phenomenal family owned hot dog joint with the TASTIEST FOOD you could imagine. None of that generic, deep fried garbage that you could get at any Mr. Sub in Chicago. I live in Plainfield but needed something from Menard's that was only available in Homer Glen. I'm a big fan of hot dog joints so I looked up places in the area I would be in and found this place. I tried this place for the first time a few weeks ago. First I asked for the hot dog special that was on their board. The girl taking my order kept asking if I wanted fries or a drink with it- to exhibit I responded I want whatever comes with the special. When she rang me up the price was twice the price of the special. I brought this to her attention and she said that drinks didn't come with the special- which confused me as I only wanted what came with the special, so she Rang me up again removing the drinks. Growing up this was the place to go, but then it was called Jr's. Pretty much everything is the same minus the name. I'm not really sure what they do to the hot dogs, but it is amazing. Whenever I go and visit my parents, I can't help but stop by Widen's on 143rd and get a hot dog. It would be a sin not to get at least one!!! I paid $6 for two hot dogs, fries and a Pepsi and emerged with one of the worst bellyaches I've ever had. Widen's does a good job of dressing the dogs up, but at their core, they're just boiled, cheap versions of quality sausage. After eating at several Chicago sausage joints, I've been spoiled with red hots that are (surprise!) red. These dogs were a pale gray and left me feeling icky. On top of that, the guy behind the counter was gruff and forceful, even though no one else was in line. I think I was a bit "metro" for his tastes. Anyway, one perk: lots of old ladies hang out in this joint, and they were adorable. One came in and ordered a single hot dog, no peppers, for her "take-home supper." I went in to Widen's on my way home from a doctor's appointment because everyone in the office was enjoying it after bringing it in for the receptionist's birthday lunch. The smell reminded me of the places my grandparents used to take me when I was a kid. I was not disappointed! The regular hot dogs look different than the all beef dog you can also order but taste so much better! They are light in color which looks a little strange to someone not used to eating them. I also had the fries (crispy outside and HOT) I brought a beef sandwich home for my husband and he said it was the best he ever had and he has been eating Portillo's and Bueno forever! Work nearby and stopped in for lunch. Service was quick, no line or waiting. Two girls working the counter were polite. However, neither wore a hairnet. I opened my hotdogs up to find cucumbers on them with powder. My guess is it was either paprika or cumin seasoning. Anyway, I took those off.
