Wild Tea Leaf in Santa Barbara is a undiscovered gem, thanks in no small part to its great location (we had a quick tea and bite before a movie), and wonderfully welcoming and talented chef! Chef Alana has a true gift for food creation--the dishes are healthy, fresh, and full of flavor. It's a lovely spot to enjoy excellent tea and delicious food. I appreciate that they are open until 8pm so you can have a light dinner there. I hope they can move away from plastic to-go containers soon but I'm sure that will happen it time. Shen Elixir (5/5) I was surprised to see it's more like a latte type of beverage. It was pleasantly tasty with a strong toasty cinnamon flavor and a subtle a salty note. It's creamy and heartwarming. 2. Matcha cheese cake (5/5): One of the best matcha cheesecakes I have had. "It's how cake should be " - Not too sweet, lightly cheesy, yet creamy. The a strong matcha flavor shines through. You can taste the subtle bitterness, which indicates the quality matcha used. 3. Tearimisu (4.5/5) Another great slice of cake that was not too sweet and it was very moist. The cake and cream used were all very light... it won't give you food coma 4. White tea (5/5) You can tell they use quality tea because of the fragrant floral note that comes through as an aftertaste. Delicious tea and the staff was very nice. They had a good variety that I haven't seen before like purple tea. They do sell their tea that is on their menu as well. The shop inside is small but they have a great people watching patio outside. However, I could see a lot of customers were looking for a sparkling/refreshing iced tea on a hot day and would walk away to the Pressed Juicery or local boba shop. I think it would be good to offer a few healthy iced teas with some simple syrup and aesthetic photos to attract the casual customer. Came here in late September on a slightly windy evening, about two hours before dinner. The outdoor teacup and matcha-themed decorations caught our attention, so we decided to give it a try. We had the chocolate, matcha, and turmeric drink, all of them smelled amazing and tasted delicious. The owners were very kind and friendly, and they make the desserts in-house too. Great location right on state street next to the work zone. The staff has been so friendly and helpful in deciding what to order! They have so many options it's so hard to choose what to get! Everything we have gotten in the last couple days has been so amazing! My personal favorite being their matcha and chai tea. The cake was delicious, but definitely felt over priced for the size. Anyways, we give the beautifully presented matchas a try. Below mid. Tasted like super milked down, CULINARY grade matcha. Like if you want soy milk with a hint of culinary grade matcha, it's that. So, definitely not the ceremonial grade that is advertised. Anywho, still was happy since everything seemed to be going well so far. Eventually my partner and I trade drinks, since it seemed there was something off about theirs but they were unsure if it was just in their head? It wasn't. I tried their drink, it tasted like pure soy milk. I'm not even joking I seriously wish I was! Lol. And during that, what seemed to be a Lady that was the owner was having a conversation with another person in the shop about how upset she was about a review since the person was upset because "the drink didn't taste like matcha," . She was also talking about how it's frustrating and discouraging to hear that when "you work so hard all day just to have someone say that, AND our matcha is CEREMONIAL like the stuff we have is good so I don't know why she would even say that." Although I empathize, it felt very unprofessional to have that conversation in front of customers (us). Like I'm all for conversation and whatnot, but it just seemed unprofessional and unwelcoming if we were to raise the concern we had with our drink. Anyways, I work up the nerve to say something. The owner walks up and I tell her "sorry it's just weird because it doesn't taste the same as mine it tastes like it's missing matcha", she proceeds to look very visibly bothered and says "That's weird. I don't know why that would happen, they're the same measurements but okay" . I then say "sorry about that" , she says "it's ok" in a condescending tone/demeanor. I shouldn't be apologizing lol in retrospect but after all, I am a people pleaser. She comes back and my partner is slightly more satisfied. But, still, it's just slightly green soy milk with a HINT of culinary grade matcha. We leave, we're quiet. And then we laugh. And we already know what both of us were thinking: "That's was the worst matcha ever". And not only that but she was so rude just because we had an issue with a drink. Felt like a child throwing a tantrum tbh! Look, we may be harsh judges because we are very, very articulate with our matchas. We make matcha at home as well and try to perfect it even more everytime. We both admit, it's NOT easy to perfect it. But, if you're gonna call yourself a "wild tea leaf" and claim to specialize in matcha, please at least have it taste like ceremonial grade matcha, like you seem to advertise. Also, customer feedback is not an attack on your character. Learn to take criticism and use it to grow. Without criticism, perfection wouldn't exist. Overall, we would've rated this place a solid 4/10 for the vibes and aesthetic. But because of the service and atmosphere the lady set, it is a solid 0/10. Will not be back, and I recommend you don't spend your money here unless they somehow learn to accept constructive criticism and genuinely improve. read more

I was in Santa Barbara for the day, and I am so pleased I stumbled across this absolute gem of a spot -- Wild Tea Leaf Organic Tea House. What an unexpected delight! The highlight of my visit was the purple sweet potato pie. Truly amazing. The flavor was authentic to a classic sweet potato pie, but with a beautiful organic twist that made every bite feel vibrant and wholesome. And that strawberry compote--wow. It was the perfect complement, adding just the right amount of brightness to elevate the entire dessert. You can really taste the care and creativity of the chef in every element. There are beautiful decorations and foliage everywhere you look. Alanna was extremely friendly and welcoming, kindly offering suggestions on what kind of tea I should buy. I informed her that I was looking for an herbal tea to help soothe some anxiety and she was super helpful. She walked me over to a shelf of various loose leaf herbal teas and explained which ones would be best for me. She was extremely knowledgeable and informative! I ended up buying an iced "peace tea" which was super refreshing and relaxing. I also ordered a slice of matcha cheesecake to go. This place was a great experience. I walked in and the music, the presentation, the experience and everything about it was sensational. A man at the front counter greeted us with a vibe of an initiation as though we were about to do something ceremonial or official. Wild Tea Leaf is an organic tea house serving up the most authentic teas sourced from China, Japan, and Taiwan. Along with tonic herbs and herbal blends from around the world. They also offer ceremonial grade Matcha lattes and medicinal lattes. I opted for the Tumeric Ginger Latte with almond milk. Tumeric is known for its anti-inflammatory benefits, and my body was in need of help to reduce my inflammation. This drink was warm, cozy and perfectly sweetened. I loved it! I also sampled one of the red teas. Which was served by Michael who is one of the owners. I've never experienced tea served the traditional way as they do in Japan. This was quite a lovely experience to watch. In addition to elixirs, herbs and teas, they also serve healthy eats here. Mostly vegan and gluten free meals, but they will be adding seafood eventually. The portions aren't hefty, but they are just enough to nourish your body and leave you feeling satiated. Me & my friend ordered a variety of things on the menu to try out. Everything was flavorful and delicious! I really enjoyed the Wild Farmers Bowl. Made with Farmers Market seasonal roasted vegetables, wild & sticky rice, with a sesame ginger dressing. The Japanese pumpkin soup is a must try! This was rich in flavor, creamy and topped with shaved wild foraged perigord truffles. Chefs kiss good! The Japanese purple pie is made with UBE and topped with I believe a coconut cream. With cacao sauce dolloped on the side. Simple yet tasty! The ambience here is minimalistic, and clean yet inviting. I especially loved the tea bar set up! The cute little tea cups, kettles and tea trays were so beautifully displayed. Serious kudos to this place and the owner and staff. My daughter was out on her 15th birthday and came down with a fever, cough, sore throat, and just feeling terrible. I happened to walk by and asked for a recommendation on what to get her to help her feel better and the very friendly woman called the boss for the best option and made a delicious Peace tea on the house for her. My companion and I stopped in on a weeknight while we were waiting for a movie right across the courtyard to start. It was a bit of a chilly night and perfect for a cup of tea. We walked in and were greeted by the several staff members who were working and they were happy to tell us anything we wanted to know about the teas. Since we didn't have a lot of time we decided to just order one of their delicious-sounding chocolate tortes with matcha powder and two single cups of non caffeinated tea-- one cup of mint and one berry. The torte was tasty and while shareable, it was a bit small for $14. We didn't see prices for their single cups, only for buying larger quantities of tea, so we were surprised when we ended up paying $35 for the torte and those 2 cups of tea. We didn't get any of their rare or exotic teas and they ended up costing more than a couple pints of beer. We sat inside where they have 2 tables and a small bar -- most of their seating is outside in the courtyard so we were happy they were able to clear off one of the vacated tables inside to be able to stay warm. Overall it was a decent experience and the staff was helpful and attentive. It was pretty pricey for what we got so I don't think we'd do it again. Maybe if we got some of their food or did more of the tea experience by getting a full pot it would be better. I'm glad to see a place that sells these kinds of teas and healthy food has come to Paseo Nuevo, but the pricing for single cups means that it unfortunately won't be a place that I just pop into. read more

I loved how he sources his matcha from a small family batch in Japan, same for the teas themselves.
