Wild Thyme was fantastic. The service was excellent, and knowledgeable. They do offer kid-friendly options, but our 2 year old was more than happy with a portion of her mom's Vidalia onion encrusted salmon. I had the Waterfall Beef, and though it was slightly disappointing that the dish was not a literal waterfall of beef (one can dream), it was nonetheless spectacular. The dish maintained a constant level of spice that didn't overwhelm the sweetness one associates with stir fry. Vegetables were cooked perfectly. The wine list was excellent, and featured a Pinot Noir from Elk Cove in Oregon, a winery which I visited several years earlier with my all-too-pregnant wife who, as we all do when we can see too clearly the threads of fate that ensnare us, railed against her default role as my designated driver as I drank delicious wine. read more

Clean, fast service, hot food, great location. My favorite restaurant in Highlands! Grilled veggie sandwich is heavenly goodness when people in this town don't normally eat veggies that aren't fried or overcooked soaking in bacon grease or lard. My husband got the bean burger which was also amazing and not full of onions or breading or other fillers. read more

Worst service I've ever received in my life. I got blamed for my own allergy when I specifically asked 3 separate times for a gluten free option, and they brought me a non GF plate. The server's only excuse was "well I have other tables to worry about and your allergy is not my responsibility to remember". The server did not even consider taking the food (that I was allergic to) off the tab because it would cost the restaurant money, and I had already taken a few bites (in which I proceeded to get sick in the bathroom). After a lot of back and forth, the owner was able to listen to us and fix the situation. Good food, but not good enough to excuse getting bullied by your waiter for his own mistake. read more

We tried this place out for lunch once day while in the Highlands area for the weekend. I had the rosemary infused white bean soup and portabella sandwich with sweet potato chips. The soup was NOT good and tasted like it had way too much thyme in it, not rosemary. The portabella sandwich was good, but 50% of the sweet potato chips on my plate were chewy and soggy. Had a wonderful experience tonight. We had outside dinner reservations we had our freshly groomed dog. Carol made our evening, great local beer recommendations. The salad appetizer goat cheese coated in panic yum. I had WNC trout it was outstanding. Hubby had pork chop with an awesome chutney. Pirate had the doggie cook to order chicken breast. We read the fabulous reviews and were so disappointed. We ordered the seared tuna appetizer that was served overcooked. When we told our waiter. he became very defensive & arrogant, then went and got the manager, who came to our table and was already ready for war! We repeated our displeasure with our cooked, seared tuna. He then picked up my friend's chop stick's and proceeded to poke her tuna around and said as he took our two plates away. ' I will take this away, but you will not get anything else!" The owner then came over and did agree the tuna was overlooked, took it off our bill, but we have never been treated so abusively. I just LOVE finding small gourmet restaurants that use LOCAL fresh and QUALITY ingredients! Wild Thyme is a gem!!! We sat on the patio and the wait service was very attentive and professional. The beer selection was very good. I ordered one of my favorite beers, Stone IPA is one of the best beers I've ever had. I'd like to see more local (regional) micro beers (organic ones too) offered. I ordered a cup of tomato basil soup....AMAZING. A nice pink soup (cream) w/ lumps of fresh local tomatoes (you can taste the difference) w/ diced onion, basil and lovely herbs. It was so good I could hardly refrain from saying "yum" after each bite! My mother had just eaten lunch before I arrived w/ my partner to the restaurant and couldn't stop raving about this soup. She was right!!!! Next time....a BOWL. I the ordered the crab cake open faced sandwich. Another recommendation by my mother...and another WINNER!! Lump crabmeat w/ NO filler! All crab...all goodness! It was on a thin soft bakery roll w/ a homemade herb caper mayo (could have been a bit more flavorful) w/ slice of tomato/cucumber and shredded greens w/ a side of homemade sweet potato chips (baked not fried...light crispy and really good). Heaven! I really enjoyed this meal. My partner had a salmon BLT sandwich (without the bread since he cannot digest wheat flour) which was really tasty. It must have been grilled over hickory chips because the grilled flavor was OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD! Wild salmon cooked the right way can be one of my favorite seafood meals. The Applewood bacon was an excellent addition to this sandwich. WE WILL RETURN ! read more

Seated quickly once the whole party arrived which I appreciated. This gem is tucked away in the corner of the square. Staff super helpful and patient as we were friends catching up. Food was great. Don't be misled by the name of this place, folks. "Wild Thyme" is by no means a clever play on words to imply some sort of novel, over-the-top dining experience. The offerings here are fairly run-of-the-mill - and in keeping with the theme of most establishments in the area - somewhat overpriced. However, when compared to the vast majority of alternatives in the near vicinity, it's arguably one of your few viable options for a casual, reasonably affordable, and decent quality meal in the Highlands. Food: The menu at Wild Thyme Gourmet consists of stylized American fare with subtle hints of Asian influence. Both lunch and dinner are served daily - the lunch menu is comprised of multiple different salad and sandwich options. The restaurant also has a full-service bar and a fairly extensive wine list. During my recent lunch visit, I ordered the warm sesame chicken salad, which consisted of sugar snap peas, carrots, and chicken stir fried in a ginger sesame dressing - all of which was served over mixed greens. The entree was well-executed and the chicken was nicely flavored. However, it was meagerly portioned for the price - there were only five quarter sized pieces of chicken on the entire salad. Service: The service here was quick, but not particularly personable or welcoming. Our waiter was more indifferent than a gay man at the playboy mansion and the bussers were borderline robotic. I realize that this is a tourist area, and thus, the staff are likely frequently subjected to borderline sociopathic customers. However, in this case, the almost brutal indifference of the staff was palpable. Atmosphere: The vibe during our lunchtime visit was casual and the clientele was a mix of all ages, including children. There is both indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a modest sized bar area. The restaurant itself is well lit and tastefully decorated - the walls are adorned with multiple pieces of local artwork, most of which is exorbitantly overpriced. Cost: Overpriced for the quality and quantity of the food offerings, which isn't much of a deviation from the norm for the Highlands. Lunch offerings are $10-$14 and dinner appetizers and entrees are $10-$12 and $20-$30, respectively. Other: Lunch is served 11AM-4PM and dinner service begins at 5:30PM - however, the hours do change with the season, so it's best to call beforehand to verify. The restaurant is smoke-free and cell-phone free, but the latter didn't appear to be enforced during my recent visit. They do take reservations for both lunch and dinner, which are highly recommended during peak dining hours, even during the off season. The restaurant does not have its own parking lot, but plenty of free options are available along Main St. read more

Somehow, I've managed to miss Wild Thyme in the 5 or 6 years that I've been going to Highlands. "Discovering" it was certainly a great thing. I had the Paneéd Chicken and it could not have been any better. The service was prompt without being overbearing and the outdoor seating area was fantastic on a warm North Carolina summer evening. what a nice cozy place to eat, from the time you walk in you see the perfection of management and staff. We ate twice in the same day and absolutely loved what we had both times. We had two different waitresses and both gave a noteworthy performance, well spoken, polite, and just overall dedication to there job. It's ok. Limited menu of mostly vegetarian fare. My man had the mushroom soup which was good and i had the corn chowder which was awful. Tasted like canned corn with a bunch of boiled potatoes in it thickened with corn starch. I don't think the people in the kitchen know what chowder is. My man also had the grilled veggie sandwich and I had the bean burger; both good serves with a wild rice with asian salad dressing- just didn't go together. Service was good. read more

Centrally located on Highlands' Main Street, Wild Thyme offers up food that really tastes like food. Service is impeccable. Many excellent choices on the menu. You know you're at a great restaurant when the other diners gaze admiringly at what others are having. Today, the couple eating lunch at the next table happened to be from Alexandria, Virginia. Their hometown, so close to D.C., has many fine restaurants. It blew me away when he remarked that his entree salad was the best he ever had anywhere. This is what is truly remarkable about Highlands. So many restaurants that are world-class. Wild Thyme is right up there with the best of them. After reading the reviews, hubby and I had high expectations. Food was good, but not great. We went for lunch, and menu consisted of mostly sandwiches and wraps. Before ordering, we asked our waitress for suggestions. She replied, "It's all good." When we asked which items were most popular, the answer was, "We serve over 300 people a day, and everybody likes different food." We took a guess and ordered. I had crab cakes on fresh greens and hubby had crispy chicken sandwich. The crab cakes were a bit plain; not very flavorful. Hubby's chicken sandwich was not up to the standard we would label 'gourmet'. Maybe other dishes are better, and if there is a 'house specialty', perhaps it is the reason for the good reviews. Set in a quiet nook on Highland's Main Street, Wild Thyme was a great place to have lunch on their outside patio. The patio is dog friendly for those who want to bring along their best friends. I had the soup of the day, tomato basil and it was delicious. I also had the Warm Sesame Chicken salad. The tangy sauce, sweet mandarin slices and crisp greens were a great compliments I each other. My boyfriend had the spicy bacon cheddar burger, which was very good but probably not the best option on their menu. Try something more creative as it will be worth being adventurous. read more

Went to lunch here during the week with my Husband and our small dog. We ate outside, both ordered the mushroom soup (very tasty & seasoned well), I had the warm sesame chicken salad (came out more like an Asian stir fry dish on top of greens) It sounds unusual, but, it was fantastic! I would eat that dish everyday. I'm not even a salad person but I ordered it because I'm cutting down on carbs. My Husband had the goat cheese salad with salmon added and he had no complaints. Our server was friendly, the ambiance on the patio courtyard was lively with an older crowd, some wine drinking, and a couple of other dogs sprinkled in. We stumbled up this beautiful little village in the mountains, completely by accident. We always rely on Yelp to find delicious non chain restaurants. Again it did not let us down! A 4-star dining experience relative to the nearest options and high prices. We stopped by for a Sunday lunch; the options ($10-12) all sounded tempting. The service was quick, responsive, and friendly even though we had out 4 month old with us. We started with a cup of the two soup du jours ($4.5) - a cream-based artichoke and spinach, and a tomato-based Mediterranean seafood, which was a bit overcooked and too oregano-spiced for my preference. We then selected the heaping open-faced chevre fig jam with walnuts atop a meaty multi grain slab of bread ($10.5) which hit the goat cheese love spot. We also enjoyed the grilled vegetable ciabatta sandwich ($10.75), which was tasty but a bit sloppy to eat. Both were serves with some fantastically salty sweet potatoes chips. The half dozen dessert options all sounded great; we opted for the butterscotch pudding ($8), which was a big disappointment as we were expecting a traditional Scottish bread pudding. They were accommodating in adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream ($2). read more

Wild Thyme is impeccable in every way. We came here after a night of camping, and decided to treat ourselves to a yummy lunch. We were seated immediately even though we did not have a reservation and the restaurant was quite busy. I ordered the goat cheese pecan salad and added crab cakes. The crab cakes are a MUST. They were flaky and delicious and perfectly charred, not too much, not too little. They are light, but pack a hugely delicious flavor that is not too fishy. Our server was attentive and the food preparation was fast. The restaurant itself is beautiful and warm but not pretentious. This place is perfect. read more

Great find! Stumbled on this randomly after hiking, gotta say it was the perfect surprise. Mostly outside seating either in a covered area or wood-chip patio with lots of shade and umbrellas. We showed up at 2:30 which apparently was a great way to beat the rush they get, though there we're still lots of people and we got one of the last tables. They can accomodate groups pretty easily though as a lady showed up with her husband driving a triplet stoller (the thing had a steering wheel for peets sake), along with her parents. Great beer selection if you're into that and the food really seemed to fit the whole "in the mountains / sun, and relaxing" thing. Highly recommend. read more
