I needed a root canal, but no one could see me and I was in severe pain with my face twice the size. My aunt was nice enough to make me an appointment with her doctor Dr. malarkey because my mom was so upset about me being in such pain. Once there I was informed that they do not prescribe narcotic medication there. So if you're thinking about visiting this dentist and having any work done that could potentially bring you pain you're gonna have to live with it because he does not prescribe narcotics. That means no pain medicine when you have a tooth pulled or you have a really bad cavity. Basically you are Sc*ewed. P. S. When I left the office as I only went there for pain containment The nurse called my aunt who set up the appointment and said nothing but negative things about me, that I was completely rude and they've never dealt with anyone like me, all because I said thank you and I walked out. Let me add that they fit me in 5 minutes before their lunch so it wasn't like this was gonna be an hour appointment. They were just gonna look at my tooth. And that's exactly what they did look at my tooth. I could've just stayed in bed with ice on my face. read more

I hate the dentist, but I love pretty teeth! I have no idea what it is, but since I was a wee lady I've been deathly frightened by this person who wants to dig in my mouth, tell me to floss everyday, and has tools that make horrifying noises (think scary movie, chain saw noises). However, after many years of sleepless nights before the dentist...I'm slowly accepting that if I want to have pretty pearlies, then I need to go without hesitation, or at least get over it and suck it up one hour of my life. My Yelp love comes from my liking of the dental hygienists', they are who you deal with for the majority of the time you are at the dentist. They are all genuinely nice, gentle, and kind. From my first appointment they were kind enough to give me ideas to distract me from my fear; use my iPod so I can't hear the toe curling noises. As for Dr. Melarkey himself, for all of about 2 minutes per every other visit, I've come to the conclusion he is awkward and quirky. Not in a bad way, just in a way that seems like he wants to ask one random question to have some conversation, then get the heck out of there. I've only had one slight issue, but I wasn't scarred, in the end all I can do is laugh! I was having work done on my cavity and the hygienist didn't give me enough Novocaine. So Dr. Melarkey went to town and gave me an extreme amount, so much that I was numb for about six (plus) hours after my appointment. I was and looked like Quasimodo. My fam kept trying to make me laugh - a. because I would drool, and b. because only half of my face could move - they enjoyed this outcome way more than I did. I know this stuff happens, so I wasn't too upset - but I am way glad it was over Novocained, rather than under, it would have been a different story if it was the later. I still hate what you do, but I hate it just a smidge less now! read more

I've been dentist shopping for a few years now and Dr. Melarkey is the best dentist I have found yet. In fact, he was recommended to me by my Delta Dental customer care rep because the rep himself uses Dr. Melarkey and he says he never gets customer complaints about Dr. Melarkey - I took that to be a good sign and scheduled an appointment. I have been nothing but pleased since. Dr. Melarkey has provided very simple and honest exams to date. No frills, but no B.S. either. I appreciated his honesty after being told by Dr. Rick Mathews DDS that I needed my fillings replaced. Then over a year and a new dentist later, Dr. Melarkey takes X-rays and informs me that the existing work is perfectly fine and shows no indication of leaking/failure, and that we'd monitor them as they should last a few years longer. THANK YOU-THANK YOU Dr. Melarkey for NOT using my teeth and insurance to pad your wallet!!! You sir do your industry a true service. My cleanings have been fine, the office staff is polite, efficient and patient/helpful when I have asked questions. I appreciate that I get a reminder in the mail for my appointment along with a phone call the day before. I have never had to wait to be seen either. I have seen a steady stream of people of all ages here and everybody seems comfortable (including children and dentist leery people like myself). Lastly, there is a parking available. read more

Do y'all know how dentistry makes its money? Well, having sold dental services, I do. And it's a crazy racquet! Dr Melarkey's staff will clean your teeth. They won't freak you out. He will come in and address your dental health. He will bill your insurance. If your insurance doesn't cover something, he'll charge you. He gives you a nice baggie of dental treats to leave with; your kids get a toy. Dr. Melarkey is not someone who is going to fish in your mouth and try to identify things to bill you. He is not going to charge you $25 if you miss your appointment. His staff is not going to frighten you that if you don't floss you're going to hell and your teeth are proceeding you. And you're not paying for his office to be the taj mahal...seriously, do you really need a tv in the chair??!! (not if people are taking care of you!) And they won't force you to buy Sonicares for their $50 income. Dr. M is good natured and friendly. His staff is polite and efficient. I would normally have early appointments and I would be seen on time and I would be in and out of the office in less than a hour! I've been a patient of this office for about 10 years now. I liked them because they were able to handle extracting my wisdom teeth (it was a no-complication procedure) w/out referring me to a surgeon. I saw them a few more times, and missed an appointment for a cleaning (I called but gave less than 24 hours notice). To the Yelper who said they don't charge - that's inaccurate. They absolutely do charge. I paid the missed appointment fee and eventually moved out of the area. Fast forward to a few months ago... I have a horrible toothache that's put me in the ER three times. My usual dentist can't see me, but I remember this office and call. Well, the receptionist initially REFUSED to take me back again as a patient because of my missed appointment TEN YEARS PRIOR. Concerned, I asked her if I owed them any money for the appointment, she confirmed that nope - I did pay, but she was "doubtful" taking me as a patient.... wtf? I paid my fees, and what are you, the appointment police? I practically beg her to see me, explaining I'm in severe pain (she had already confirmed they could see me that same morning). She finally agrees to take me. Ugh. Rude and unnecessary. The day of the appointment, I'm given a treatment plan (emergency root canal, and a crown). We were staggering the appts across several weeks. At some point during the first appointment, something goes awry. Without any warning, and without my permission - Dr. Melarkey removed my molar. I had never had a root canal before, so I wasn't aware of what was happening until it was over - and he was giving me aftercare information. When he said extraction - I burst into tears. To add insult to injury - I actually had to pay more for the extraction than I would have for just the day's treatment. To add even further insult to injury - they completed my pain prescription wrong and then went to lunch. I had to wait over 4 hours for pain relief because they pharmacy couldn't reach anyone in the office. I was in agony - no family support (because I didn't think I needed it), and so much pain. I went back for a cleaning 2 weeks later - that was awesome. The hygienist was great and very thorough. I scheduled the rest of my treatment (a couple fillings), and my next cleaning. I requested time off for the first filling - the office called and cancelled. I rescheduled and requested time off again for the filling - and they just called to cancel again. Maybe I should charge the Dr. a cancellation fee? read more

Don't go to this dentist. The receptionists are extremely rude and the dentist is mediocre at best. The last time I went there, they started drilling on my tooth when my mouth was not numb. I was given multiple shots before my mouth was completely numb. I don't know if it was because the dentist was missing the nerve or what, but needless to say it was painful. They also charge you $40 if you miss or reschedule an appointment. read more

Ridiculous fees for canceled appts. less than 24 hours...so if you are canceling at 23 hours....Yes! They will charge you $50. Dr melarkey used to be a wonderful dentist. I really like his staff especially Janet who cleans my teeth. However for the last year and a half I have pay to go in there and get my teeth checked and he is never there to do anything I get the x-ray which convenient for him as my insurance pays. He hasn't even been there for at least 1.5 years even though his staff is doing all this. I was there a couple weeks ago and the lady who cleans my teeth mentioned that something seemed to have a pocket turned out that my crown was loose. Once again Melarkey was nowhere to be seen. So guess what the crown fell off today. I would not recommend him to anybody. But I would recommend his staff read more

Dr. Melarkey and his staff are down-to-earth, welcoming, and no-nonsense. I feel like they are honest and are not going to take you for a ride as far as suggesting dental work that doesn't absolutely need to be done. I became a patient a few years ago after leaving an office with dentists and staff that were very friendly, but that appeared more upscale/trendy and were always trying to up-sell for their benefit (e.g. recommending periodontal gum treatment for me and telling me that I have several cavities that need to be filled asap after the gum treatment - After my first visit with Dr. Melarkey, he determined that I only had one cavity that needed to be taken care of and the gum treatment was deemed unnecessary). I enjoy interacting with Dr. Melarkey and his staff, respect them, and view them as true professionals. I've recommended Dr. Melarkey to my fiance and my coworker, and both are now his patients as well. I will continue to recommend him to others who are looking for a new dentist, as he is affordable, reasonable, and even has a sense of humor he shares with his patients! read more

I've been going there for a couple of years. The dentist and staff seem competent. My old dentist retired. Dr. Melarkey & staff seem less inclined to let me know what's happening while they're playing in my mouth but that's no big problem, my old dentist was a serious blabbermouth. read more
