D&W used to service transmissions for a small mechanic shop I worked at in Leelanau county, so I've seen them do over 40 transmissions in my short time as a mechanic. We never had a problem with any of their work! Not a single tranny, and I'd be willing to bet that's the norm for Wayne and the D&W crew. So now, when the trans in my plow truck finally had had enough, I confidently took it to D&W. Wayne took me for a diagnostic cruise in my truck so he could explain what was happening and what would have to be done for repairs. We took our vehicle to the nearest auto repair and they confirmed it was an issue with the alternator and at the current rate, we wouldn't make it back home without repairing it. Although helpful, they unfortunately could not service our vehicle due to being short staffed. Knowing this was an alternator issue we called several other auto repair businesses (including a Honda dealership) and no one had any availability until the following week; it was currently Wednesday. Losing hope and already thinking of alternative ways to get home we called Traverse City Public Service Garage (TCPSG) and they luckily had someone available to re-diagnose and potentially service our vehicle (it was about 1pm at this time). Upon arrival they were able to verify the issue, order the faulty part from one of their local suppliers, have it delivered, and installed it in about 4 hours or so. While there was an element of luck that came into play (available mechanic, supplier with the part, time of day, etc.), the service we received was both friendly and fair all things considered. The good folks at TCPSG got our vehicle back up and running and we ultimately got back home later that evening safely and in one piece. The first person who looked at it thought the AC compressor needed to be replaced to be safe to drive but they had a second person look at it and he was able to offer a quick fix to get us up and going. We were ready to leave it and have it fixed when their AC person was available but they were honest and gave us a better option even though it cost them business. We cannot thank them enough for helping us in a pretty desperate situation.

It's always scary to walk blindly into a shop to get some work done, especially with my limited…read moreunderstanding of how cars work, and that's what I did here. The price for labor at Keystone is reasonable, especially compared with other shops in the Traverse City area. I was given an estimate for the repairs which they suspected I needed, but once they popped the hood, they found it wasn't quite as serious than they initially expected. Rather than make those repairs anyway, and charge me an extra hour of labor plus parts (which I've experienced before from a more dishonest, mainstream auto repair shop), they reduced the price from my estimate and made the correct repairs. Not only that, but they knew my situation was difficult, and that I needed to travel several hours by car that same evening, so they began the repairs immediately in order to get me on the road before the shop closed rather than the next morning. All around a good experience and an honest mechanic, and I will return the next time my vehicle inevitably needs work.
