Went there with a group of friends... Party of 12, actually! We waited for about an hour to be seated and this was on a Tuesday night. We tried to call for reservation but are not accepting at this time. It was my first time and everyone else's except for a couple who dined less than a week ago. Had fried pickles and fried green tomatoes for appetizers. The fried pickles was good. It was crispy and just like the menu said the "lightly breaded". The fried green tomatoes were ok. Just ok since I hardly tasted the green tomatoes. The goat cheese and shrimp overwhelmed the whole thing. I didn't even notice the Thai chili sauce. Ordered pork chop but never got to eat it since I was full. (Had a meal before going there. Who does that? ME! Well, we waited for an hour to be seated! Imagine waiting on an empty stomach! I might have bitten off my friends arm, right?) So, I took it home and ate it the next day. This review won't be fair for the pork chop anymore since I didn't eat it fresh. Well, it was dry and lacks flavor. I like the mashed sweet potatoes though. I had cheesecake with strawberries. The slice was really big and strawberries were good but the cheesecake was not good as I expected it would be. The crust was soft. Notes on service... The crew was really nice but there were a lot of mistakes which we let it slipped since we are a big group. Food and drinks were given to the person which is really minor. I'm surprised they didn't get our tab mixed! One of my friends ordered got bloody Mary and it had celery and olives but the next one didn't have any. We had to call the crew's attention about it. Willie Sue's is a fairly average place to eat. The food I had was good, but not at the caliber that I expected from a place that is rated so highly here. The service at the restaurant was great though, so I will give them that. I think there are better options around the Sumter area. This is our favorite place to eat in Sumter! The pros: nice location where traffic is minimal, and the trees give it a more peaceful atmosphere. The interior is tastefully decorated for casual rustic comfort. We haven't had an appetizer yet, but I can speak for a few entrees and the mound of incredible cheesecake we had for a dessert. My husbands' bacon wrapped steak melted like meaty grilled butter in your mouth. It was cooked perfectly medium rare and the flavor nearly brought tears of joy. The sweet potato was as expected. My scallops dish was decadent with their delicious crawfish succotash and grit patties. I will echo they have the best salads and I will dream of those gooey croissants. The service our first time was excellent, the second time was above average (this time we were seated in the bar area and it was pretty busy). The manager popped by both times to check in, and the food timing was good- I didn't feel rushed through my salad to eat my hot entree. My mom had a chicken salad for an entree and it was also nicely portioned, fresh and the vinaigrette was wonderful. The kid meal hot dog was high quality and the fruit was very fresh. This comment is in poor taste, but made me giggle: you know the saying "nothing tastes as good as being skinny feels"? Well, have that salad with fresh bacon pieces, warm croissant, steak with their succotash, and follow up with a dense, dreamy cheesecake better than I've had in NYC and I will disagree all damn day. Cons: I'd recommend a Happy Hour menu with drinks and appetizers to get more people acquainted with this place and to cater to light appetites as well as increase the number of patrons at that earlier time of day to match the incredible amount of employees this place has. Our server said she had to pass a stringent test to serve, but it looks like half the town's young people work there. Also, my wine had a very healthy pour but it was very warm, too warm for a Pinot Noir. I don't think they know much about wine. Give it a whirl! They are new and are figuring some things out, but give them feedback if you have it and they will make it right. Please support this local place- Sumter desperately needs a restaurant like this, and I plan on being a regular. read more

Disappointing. My wife and I went there tonight for Valentine's Day. Got the green tomato appetizer -- tasted good but cost more than many entrees. Not worth it. She got clam chowder. Tasted fishy and she didn't eat it. They tried to get her something else but the mood was gone. I had beef(less) tips. Almost no beef there. It was on rice instead of noodles. Sauce wasn't good. I didn't finish mine either. Kind of ruined our Valentine's Day. We won't be back. Good news: they didn't charge her for her fishy-tasting chowder. I have been to this place twice. The first time was a very poor, however this was right after they opened. I decided to give this place another try last week and all I have to say is I am beyond disappointed. Overpriced mediocre food. Expect to spend ~30$ per person. Hands down the best food i had while in Sumter,SC....the appetizers were just the right size. I had the pork chop which really should have a warning about it being more like a pork steak. This place was great! We walked in with a party of 18 and they say us quickly. The checks got a little mixed up at the end, but that's expected with a large party. Food was amazing! Get the Nachos! We had lunch at Willie Sue's on a Friday: potato soup, hamburger with fixings, shrimp po' boy and 2 glasses of iced tea. Fries were served with both the hamburger and the po' boy. The potatoes in the soup and the fries were a bit underdone for our taste. The hamburger was stacked so tall that no human could eat it without a fork. Onions on the burger were too thick for a burger, too. The po' boy was five overdone shrimp on a large roll with mayo, 2 pale tomato slices, and two leaves of Bibb lettuce. We were in Sumter for a couple of days and some of the locals told us we had to try Willie Sue's! Let me say that this restaurant is fabulous! Our waitress, Marian was quite knowledgeable about the menu and had a review for every question I had. At her suggestion we tried the Fried Pickles! Oh my goodness, EXCELLENT choice for our appetizer! I had half a Roast beef sandwich with au ju on the side. Hubs had Buffalo Chicken sandwich with fries. Both were wonderful! Best "All American Burger" I've had in years. Went the Willie Sue's for the first time today and had lunch with a friend. We both had burgers, fries, and sweet tea. My Ultimate Burger came with blue cheese, sautéed mushrooms, and sautéed onions (additional toppings available). Heaven. This place takes care of the little things: the bun was toasted, tomato was juicy red. Best fries I've had in years: thick cut, big rocky salt, and done to perfection. Booth was clean, staff was really friendly, atmosphere was good for conversation (not noisy). Even the men's room was clean. When this restaurant first opened it was delightful. Not anymore. I was very disappointed on my last two visits so much as I will not be visiting this establishment again. I believe I was fed someone's leftovers. My caesars salad had all drained to the bottom of the bowl. The bacon ruined the club sandwich that was on two regular slices of bread. It was like a tomatoe and salad sandwich on two full slices of bread. Bacon tasted very odd as did the steak tips that were in various stages of being cooked some tough, some bloody with large pieces of fat sometimes larger than the meat. I've been to this place several times in my visits to Sumter and it is one of the best places in town. Their steaks are excellent. Burgers are hand pattied and great. You'll have to try their french fries, they are cooked in duck fat and are amazing. If you get a salad, try their hot honey bacon dressing, it's killer. I have been coming there since they opened. I have never had anything bad. The staff is always friendly. I love that most of the meats and veggies are locally sourced, so most things taste fresh. We were here our first night in Sumter, food was fabulous the only thing dd was the had run out of sliced mushroom so we had button mushrooms instead that were totally delicious. Our waitress was new she had only been serving a week but was fantastic ! Whenever she didn't have an answer she came back with one instead of b s she was completely honest about it! The steaks were cooked perfectly and the sweet potato mash was delicious! We tried the alligator bites for an appetizer.... Highly recommend them. Nice atmosphere and great service. The fried mushrooms with horseradish were delicious. I was not a fan of my roast beef sandwich because the bread was soggy and the au jus was not very flavorful. I ordered mashed potatoes but they accidently brought out fries with it. I was glad for the mistake because the fries were delicious. We got there at 1 pm on a Sunday. We were told that there was an hour wait unless we wanted to sit at the bar. We decided to sit at the bar. When got to the bar we noticed some tables around the bar that were empty. We started to wonder why we were told that we had to sit at the bar or wait an hour. We were greeted by the bartender with a request for drinks. I simply said that we were just eating and her response was " I can still get you drinks" and then handed us menus. Pretty disappointed. I was visiting the local area for a business trip with some colleges and Willie Sue's was really the only restaurant that came up on our radar. We had a large part and decided to split up into two groups to expedite the seating process. Half of us sat in the bar and ordered drinks before we were given a table. When we were seated our waitress was rude and seemed annoyed that we had each already ordered a drink at the bar before she could attend to us. We ordered the nachos and potato skins as appetizers and weren't at all impressed for the cost so we skipped straight to the desert. The waitress also continued to be very cold and unwelcoming throughout this whole meal. My friend and I shared a piece of chocolate cake which was served with whipped creme and ice cream. Desert was the best part of that meal, that's the only reason this place gets 2 stars. I paid for the chocolate cake which was about $7.70 and left a very obvious $1.00 tip. When I went to check my credit card statement I discovered a $17.70 charge from Willie Sue's. How did a $1 tip turn into a $10 dollar tip? I didn't want to go through the hassle of dealing with my bank and the restaurant for all of $10, but really? That's pretty shady to me and I feel like those who use Yelp and plan on visiting in the future should be made aware in case the same thing happens to them. Wont be returning. read more

For context, Sumter, SC is not a geographical place known for a burgeoning cuisine environment, when compared to a place like New Orleans for example. With that, Willie Sue's comes in as a top dining choice for the region. Reasonably priced. Not remarkably tasty, yet far from unpleasant. If you must dine in Sumter, Willie Sue's shouldn't disappoint. The bar at Willie Sue's does seem to maintain a certain position about a select cohort of it's patrons. It seems they have decidedly omitted certain brands of spirits from their selection. Hennessy in particular was said, by the bar staff, to be a spirit that the bar manager didn't see the benefit in making available to patrons. Oh well, I guess people like legendary Hollywood Director, Martin Scorsese, Congressman and world champion boxer, Manny Pacquiao, and famous French-American opera singer, Lily Pons would have to enjoy their Hennessy elsewhere when they come to town. Had dinner here tonight. Not a lot of variety on the menu, just the usual steaks, a couple of chicken dishes, a handful of fish and seafood options, and a bunch of sandwiches/burgers. The service is good. Our waitress was quite attentive. The portion sizes are typical of midscale restaurants like Applebee's. Our appetizer of fried alligator tail bites was perfectly cooked. Alligator is awful if overcooked, but this was just right. When our main dishes came, they had goofed and given my husband mashed sweet potatoes instead of a baked sweet potato. This was pointed out to and quickly corrected by our server. All in all, a decent enough experience. Not someplace I'll be visiting on a regular basis however. read more

Portions are very small and over priced. I ordered the ribs tonight and they had plastic pieces from the brush they use to put BBQ sauce on the ribs. Ribs were also very dry and fatty. They refunded the ribs, but charged me double for my drinks I realized when I got home. My daughters had burgers and they had so much salt on them they could not finish them. My Dad had blackened chicken and it was a 2 oz piece of chicken for 16.99. One of the worse places I've been in SC! read more
