Willis Builders renovated our kitchen and basement and were really professional in their work. It's not the cheapest of renovators, but if you want flawless work and professional service this is the team to get it done. It's the little things that count: -laying down tarp or coverings as to not track dirt/work mess. -becoming a part of your daily routine without intruding on your day-to-day activities (and they will be there long if you have massive projects) -keeping in touch via text or email if they are not showing up a day -superb detailing in everything... from painting, to cabinet installation... they will make your vision come alive -owner Matt, checking in periodically on progress -trustworthy advice on things that need to be fixed things that don't need to be fixed -one stop shop -- I needed hardwood flooring done in the new kitchen, for example, and they linked me with someone who coordinated work with them Minor downsides: -surprise costs like hauling trash or materials (Always budget more, you may not get a clear scope of how much exactly after labor/materials will cost. The estimate only factors a general idea, so be clear up front.) -had to rush them a bit to stick to timeline (always fast during demo, but towards end gets a little slower. was easily remedied when asked them to communicate more on which work days they would be in/out) If you have a massive dream project, they are the people to get it done. We have met many contractors of all different areas, and always encounter difficulty in response time, details and cleanliness (this is a big one for me). Willis is one of those gems, albeit pricey but I trusted them coming into our home daily and still trust them for consults on small projects. read more

For our first-ever home remodeling, we decided to go with Matthew Willis' team to help us renovate our basement. We worked with them for a total of 2 months in turning around an empty basement to an inviting space with a wet bar, entertainment room, new bathroom, and playroom. It turned out to be a great decision to use Willis with their constant communication, knowledgeable team headed by project manager Luis, and their ability to turn our vision into reality. After a walk-through of our dream basement, Matt was timely and thorough with our project estimates which we really appreciated. He answered any questions we had without hesitation, which made him very approachable. Throughout the entire project, we knew we could communicate with him via email or text, and he was always very up-to-date with how our project was progressing. He also came by every few weeks, and he made sure everything was going as planned. Luis, our project manager, was also a great person to work with. He made sure that my husband and I were happy with his work, and whenever we came to a hiccup (and there always will be minor hiccups!), he would always consult us before continuing on. He was more than flexible with any of our adjustments/changes and stayed on task with his team. If we plan on doing another renovation, we are definitely looking to hire Willis' team once again. Here's my experience with Willis Builders: I need some odd jobs done around the house, so I call to see if I can get someone out here to give me an estimate. Guy answers the phone and immediately starts asking me for personal information. It's a little off-putting. I mean, imagine you call a doctor's office to schedule an appointment, and before anyone asks what's wrong, they start asking you for your name, address, phone number, cell phone number, and email. But I figure it's just the way they do it so I give the guy my info. I hear him typing along with every answer and from the "clackety clack" of the keyboard, it sounds like he's typing on an old IBM computer from the 80s. Anyway... Lots of questions and lots of time spent spelling out my street address and email address. Then there's a pause and the guy says, "I'm sorry. There was an error. Can I get that information again?" The last bit I just gave you? No...all of it. He wanted me to give him all of my info again! For whatever reason, the 1980s IBM computer lost all of the info he just typed. I suppress a sigh and consider hanging up. Instead, I decide to give the guy a break and do as he asks. So we go through all of my info again. Clackety clack, he types. Then he asks, what kind of work do I need done? I ramble off a few of the jobs. (I notice he's doesn't type this part.) Get this: Then he says, someone will call me to schedule an appointment. Wait... I went through all that and you're not even able to schedule an appointment? Dude, what's your job function? If you don't have the authority to schedule appointments, why are you answering the phone? And why are you asking for anything besides a call back number? He says someone will call me to schedule an appointment. It's been a week now and no one's called. This is me holding my breath. Look, if a business can't handle something simple like taking information over the phone and scheduling an appointment, then I certainly can't trust them to do remodeling work around my house. read more

Expensive for mediocre work. The wall boards seams are showing and the screw heads are popping through. Work had to be redone because the workmen used the wrong colors. Sloppy work. read more

Please avoid these contractors. We wrote to them from their website. A Tracy Kennedy wrote back a while later and asked us to provide her with a list of what we needed to get done. My mom wrote her a list and asked a few questions. One thing she made clear was that she needed a few jobs done and based on how well they are completed, there is more work and larger projects. No response. I completely understand that companies are busy so I ended up writing her two more times and then after a few more days, Tracy finally writes back and says "At this time, our company focuses on remodeling and renovations and would not be able to take on your job." I couldn't believe it. I replied back and informed her how odd her response was when she asked for a list of tasks and told her she missed out on other larger jobs in a few different homes. Most customers want to see the level of work you can do, so they gauge it with some smaller tasks if possible. Very turned off by her attitude. I dug around and saw they have other bad reviews as well. So basically, save your time contacting them because your menial tasks are not enough to pad this companies pockets. read more

We hired Willis Builders last year to install new floor (porcelain tiles) in the kitchen, hallway and the bathroom and were happy with work. Recently, I noticed a serious leak from under the toilet, most likely the result of less than perfect installation. It's a simple job, but things happen. What's important is that a week after I contacted Matt, and the week included the Labor Day weekend, his crew came, put the new wax ring, and re-installed the toilet. Three days later, it still does not leak. Amazing but true. ;-) While customer service is becoming an oxymoron, thankfully, there are exceptions and Willis Builders is one of them. 5 stars this time. read more

I was very satisfied with the end result, and will definitely refer them to any family or friends who will need any renovations done. It was a huge basement project that needed a completely new redesign, and Willis Builders magically flipped our basement in less than 1.5 months. This is our second remodeling adventure with Matt Willis. We did major remodels on two bathrooms about 4 years ago: everything went smoothly and on budget. The bathrooms still get compliments, and have held up beautifully under regular use. We are now doing the other 2 bathrooms, and again, everything has gone well. The original estimate was timely, and the price was fair. Matt has worked with us to keep the budget manageable as we juggle several sub-projects that are competing for budget. He has been perfectly flexible in helping us find a way to get the important parts done, while slowing other more ambitious goals until the budget allows us to finish them off. At this stage, we have just finished a well-run demolition. We are now missing our two main bathrooms, but don't feel nervous at all: the house is still clean, and we're confident Matt's great crew will do the same solid work on these that they did on the last two. It's amazing to tackle such serious projects and feel completely confident that it's going to turn out better than we imagined. And after this one is done, we have another pretty significant job waiting in the wings. It's wonderful to have a reliable and skilled partner in such ventures. (We have had other adventures, with Washingtonian-awarded builders, that did not go nearly so well.) I'll report back later on how it all turned out. In my opinion this was very sloppy, unprofessional work. We hired Willis to move front door, add a front foyer, a sunroom, back patio, and partial remodel of kitchen. The material costs came in 300 % over the estimate in the contract. Invoices were submitted to us with double bills quite frequently. Workers did not seem to know what they were doing and were unsupervised. They flooded our basement 3 times. Windows and doorways and skylights were framed in crooked lines, not straight. County inspectors failed the work more than 5 times. Willis left our house walls open during March, while we were living in the house, despite our repeated pleas for them to at least nail some boards across the openings. Concrete was poured unevenly and badly. Within months of completion, concrete walkways/patio chipped and cracked, and pieces of siding fell off. Willis was unresponsive to our repeated pleas for more careful supervision. Willis departed from the architect's plans and installed windows in the wrong place and a beam in the wrong configuration, without consulting us about it. We had a certified home inspector come to review the work, and the inspector found more than 70 issues. We ended up hiring our own subcontractors for jobs like gutters and cabinet installation because Willis was unable to do them properly. These subcontractors did the work quickly and carefully, and charged less than what Willis was going to charge for these services. read more
