Williwaw is trying to be many things to a very wide swath of customers. A lunch spot, a concert venue, occasional movie house, coffee shop, night club, etc. I've been here several times now and I'd say they're fairly successful at most of these pursuits, though there is room for improvement. The concerts and parties I've attended here have all been enjoyable in part due to the open layout and spaciousness which allows for easy navigation even when it's a sold-out show. The bands, DJs & general entertainment found here is of a pretty nice mix/variety. It's great to have a venue downtown providing some life and diversity to the area. I can't speak much about the food as I've only had it a couple times (I'll revise my review once I've tried more of the menu.) I had a sandwich here during one of their movie nights and I wasn't wow'd by it but didn't have any complaints, though I know many reviewers have. The seating wasn't exactly comfortable for a 2-hour movie but it worked. Blues Central (upstairs) is reason enough to visit this place as they serve some of the best, most creative cocktails on the block. I found the service to be excellent and the staff knowledgeable about their drink menu. All around, Williwaw has a lot to offer & hopefully they continue to develop the potential I see here. Security is so rude at this place. They honestly killed the vibe, just walking in. Security is nasty and awful every time you walk in. We are usually stone-cold sober when we come in, and super polite too. Security is still nasty. I don't think the management at this bar cares either, because it's a problem EVERY-TIME. I've only had one positive experience with a security guy there, he was working upstairs and helped me get through a crowd. That guy was amazing!!! Everyone else there sucks though. This place is honestly so mid and there are way more fun bars, where your vibes won't die the minute you walk in. The music is pretty mid too, the dj's do not pop off. I feel bad saying that but you can be mid-twerk and the music gets messed up(they'll just start playing "I want to face with somebody" or something) and then the vibe gets weird. There is always a cover fee on weekends so be mindful that you might spend $$$ on something mid if you come in here. This place is a pretty sick restaurant, though. Anchorage needs more places like this downtown! It reminds me a lot of venues/bars in Chicago and Denver, which makes me really happy that there is a place like this here now because I love rooftop bars! I've been anxiously waiting for this place to open since they first started construction, I work a block away and walk past the building every day. Today I was out walking around, trying to decide where I wanted to go for lunch, when I noticed that all the doors to the building were open and the fencing was removed, so the curious me just walked in! Turns out they've been open for the past week and if you're observant enough to look past all the construction stuff still outside you'll notice a small chalkboard sign on the side walk saying that the "The Roof is open at noon every day (weather permitting)"! The Roof is awesome! Great views of downtown, fire pits, lots of seating, good music, friendly service, delicious food, and tasty beers on tap! They have a small lunch menu and a decent sized dinner menu. I ordered the Portabella burger with a side of their coleslaw. The burger was flavorful and tender and the slaw was crispy and fresh! It was a good lunch size, a little pricey, but unfortunately, everything in Anchorage is. My server, Bill, was super friendly and was excited to share everything he could with me. He informed me that the downstairs venue can hold 800 people for shows. Steam Dot will be opening and have a place on the first and second floors located right on the corner of 6th and F. The Roof will also be open in the winter for special occasions (they plan to have heat lamps); they have plans to open for the New Years fireworks and other special events. Bill also said that smaller 1-3 person bands are able to play on the rooftop during the evening. I know I'll most likely turn into a regular here, it's so easy to stop in for lunch or swing by for a drink/dinner after work. Great rooftop bar to hang out when the weather is nice. However the mixed drinks are unbelievable. I mean unbelievably bad. I started with a Margarita and it was this noxiously sweet, artifical tasting syrupy bastardization of a Margarita. I thought, why not try the Moscow mule, it's not really sweet, should be safe. Wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Holy #%£+* what are the bartenders here on? I don't know what this is made with, but it is awful. This place has some scrumptious food. The street tacos from the roof top are so good. Probably the best. I have had in Alaska. They come in pork, chicken and steak. The steak is my favorite. If you like spicy try the pork it's a little warm. The cashew chicken salad is good. I always get it with ranch, as I don't care for the cilantro-ginger dressing. It's good, just to cilantroy for me. The burgers ,Ancho beef dip, and BLT are great. Always juicy and cooked well. The Peanut Butter Dipper is peanut butter, honey, wheat bread, grilled and served with berry dipping sauce. I was skeptical, but I tried it. The berry dipping sauce is great, but a tad sweet for me. The sandwich itself will leave you remembering the peanut butter toast of your childhood. MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE is the Three Cheese Squeeze. Filled with a cheddar, provolone, mozzarella melt down on sourdough bread. Grilled 'til super gooey. I always have smoked ham and peacan-wood smoked bacon added and a little bit of their beer mustard. This is definitly an adult grilled cheese. In my opinion it is the star of the menu! As far as appetizers go I love the warm crab & jalapeno dip with the localy made tortilla chips. I can actually eat this as a lunch. I always get my food for take out and it's a pleasant experience. If I could rate zero stars, I would. I went to Williwaw on a Friday night and was kicked out because I "used the bathroom too many times." I admit, I had a few drinks before my encounter with the security staff but when I asked why I was being kicked out they told me "it is clear you're under the influence of substances," as in plural substances. They were implying I was going to the bathroom to do drugs. I responded with "yeah, the alcohol that your establishment served me, which happens to make me need to pee." Let's just say that got me no where because now I was being "argumentative." The worst part was being escorted out by 5 security guards while my friends were still inside, as if they had nothing better to do. Afterward, my friends and I ended up going to a different bar. Here's the best part. My girlfriend and I went to the bathroom because hey, a girls gotta pee when a girls gotta pee. While we were discussing this recent predicament through the bathroom stalls, multiple people started gathering around to talk about all the BS reasons they were kicked out of Williwaw. Went here for a quick drink with a friend of mine. I have to say it was definitely a cool little kick it spot, located on a roof smack in the heart of downtown Anchorage! It comes equipped with fire pits and a full bar as well to compliment the ambiance they have going on up there. As far as service and value go. The service was decent and I would most definitely stay with beer if you are going to drink because mixed drinks are going to cost ya $$$!! I did not have a chance to check out the food situation, but it looks kinda pricey as well. I'll have to catch it next time for sure! My friends and I have gone to trivia here at Williwaw on Thursday evenings for the past few weeks. My oh my. What a horrific experience it has been. 1. Expect the host of trivia, the General Manager of Williwaw, to cuss at you if you aren't always paying attention to her. 2. None of the questions are practiced or read through prior. This means for struggling through every single question, mispronouncing ever other word, and telling the crowd to "SHUT UP" if someone helps with pronunciation. a. Example. There was a question with "Bordeaux, France" mentioned. She pronounced it "bord-ox". This isn't a problem. We all mess up, especially when everyone is watching/listening. However, when kindly corrected (and for the rest of the audience to understand the question), she screamed "SHUT THE F*** UP, I DON'T GIVE A F***". I wish I could say that this was the only time an outburst occurred... 3. I fully support having fun while working! However, it's a bit different when those participating in trivia have been waiting for a substantial amount of time (consistently) in between rounds -- while she rips shots behind the bar. 4. There was a team who cheered when they found out they were in 1st place after round 3. The rounds prior, each 1st place team would cheer! Natural response. It's exciting to be a winner. Unfortunately, the General Manager got on the microphone, yelled "SHUT THE F*** UP AND GET THE F*** OUT". When the rest of the room looked a bit confused, she continued to yell ridiculous phrases at this excited (now deflated) team. 5. Expect a trigger-happy (microphone-happy) host. Who gives as much commentary into the microphone as possible. The trivia is tough. The majority of the questions are fun! The timeframe isn't too lengthy or quick. However, it becomes an incredibly tasteless experience when the host of trivia (the general manager in this case) is obnoxiously impolite and is truly on the verge of verbal abuse. We had brought quite a few friends each week who were pumped to play trivia and unfortunately hated their experience because of the way she treated all of the teams in the room. This place really does seem lovely. However... It's internally challenging for me to support an establishment when the GM represents their company through psychotic outbursts and inappropriate comments, much less through a microphone. I will also mention: the wait staff and the bartenders downstairs have been incredibly pleasant during my visits. Whoever is higher up at Williwaw, please do something about this General Manager (if she truly is a GM). It's heartbreaking seeing someone treat a whole room full of people with such unmannerly words. My friends and I would love to return and give this great establishment business, however, we hesitate doing so because of the GM. If the GM actually isn't the host of trivia, my sincere apologies. Awful. Waiter didn't know anything about the menu. Didn't bring all the food or drinks. Menu said home cooked chips but they came in a bag. We waited an hour for our food. Orders were incorrect. Waiter didn't come to the table once to check up. Waited thirty minutes for our bill after asking three times. And there were no apologies. We attended the sundown festival last night and went into Williwaw for drinks since it was part of the festival venue. I'll admit they were busy but it's a bar what can you expect when we finally ordered drinks the bartender told me the price and I handed him cash he typed it in the computer and told me I still owed 3$ I was confused and handed it over assuming maybe there was a surcharge for the festival but he put all $3 in his tip jar???? And then pointed at the jar as if I should leave more ?? Came back an hour later maybe for drinks again during the concert and he told me the price but raised it from my last drink ???? And put the extra money in his tip jar again I was confused asking why and he kept pointing at his tip jar and telling me to move along. Not sure if he was drunk because he was doing shots with guests at the bar but that was ridiculous. read more

Place was nice when they first opened. It's gone downhill since. The security kicked a gay couple out for kissing, they don't do their jobs. I've seen fights break out and they do nothing about it. A friend and I decided to check this place out, we are local Anchorage residents & the night was warm & beautiful. The reviews were mixed about three stars with half loving it and half hating it. We did decide that the menu on the rooftop, although short, was appropriate for the venue. We do agree with most of the reviews that the drinks on the roof top menu did not taste good. They were watered down and had more of the flavor of sugar water then they did liquor or juice. However the slushy drinks were very strong and good if you like margaritas. We decided to go with something more fitting with our moods and order Malibu & Cokes. They were absolutely delicious and very affordable. The other noticeable change was that the cup was not filled with ice so you actually got flavor and Coke which is a little different from most places here in Anchorage where you order a rum and Coke and it looks like Skin colored water. Our dinner, from the very small but barbecue like menu, was very good. my cheeseburger was cheesy, not over cooked, had perfect amount of sauce and veggies and my friends grilled prawns with rice and greenery was beautiful and delicious & cooked perfectly. As we sat there for several hours the change from a dinner type environment to a very busy social venue for any age crowd was surprising. People were friendly, walking around saying hello to each other the outdoor music was great and the server did a good job of being sure our drinks were replenished and our trash was taken away. It did take take a bit for him to get back to us but it was mostly due to working their way through the crowd. The food was good, the menu drinks stank, the rooftop was clean, the service was good, the bathrooms were clean. Overall it was very relaxing and overall a great night. We will go back! read more

I've been to this location several times. And this places has always been a very welcoming and fun place with out a dumb. Tonight I decided to come to happy hour and check out the scene and listen to the live band. I walked in and rock and roll bingo seem to keep everyone going but I wanted a beer and I had to wait but there was no line. The funny thing several waiter and waitress simply looked at me. This was odd. Do to the fact I've been here several times alone and the moment I walked in and I had someone trying to give me a drink. I walked to the bar and was helped by one barneter with a long pony tail. The dude helped me out with a drink and when I asked to for menu the go my order. This experience was alot different I've been here on a Friday when H3 played and thus location was packed. I've also listen a DJ and music as doing on and during a fun 5K run and this was the meet up location and this was the first time this happen. It was even more odd a pair of guys came to sat at my table and someone walked up with them and took their order. And provided them a menu too. read more

So the two stars is for the ambiance, location and the speakeasy concept (even though it wasn't executed that well). I read online that in order to gain access to the rooftop bar you would have to call through the phone booth - I can understand how this could be very cumbersome and time consuming but I've been to another speakeasy where they really tried to keep it intimate and small. I ordered two drinks: the roof margarita & the punch while my boyfriend had A Moscow mule. There were all ... okay.... And I say that benevolently. The punch was juice no liquor (to my knowledge). The moscow mule was WAY too much ginger and it no mint! The ginger was burning my throat with every sip! Not enjoyable. This isn't her review but I need to mention my other friend that was with us who friend ordered a stout beer - when she asked for another he brought her something completely different...as a waiter/bartender is it not your job to remember what drink your customer ordered? Lastly, our bartender asked if we wanted another round shortly after we ordered our first round of drinks - we weren't finished with our drinks so we declined and said not right now - our bartender brought us our check prematurely, TWICE. I just thought this was rude. We felt rushed and our waiter seemed annoyed. I felt like he was having a bad day and it was affecting his work. Long review short, I am looking forward to visiting some of the other amazing bars here in Anchorage! This will not be on my recommendation list lol. read more

I don't know what this place is. Rooftop bar, concert venue, restaurant, speakeasy, ...WTF? I went to the restaurant personality on a "show night". Do you know what that means? Mamma Mia was in town, and restaurants are typically PACKED! Crickets at this restaurant. What's the food theme here? Sheesh! Rice bowls! Pick your rice/noodle, pick your meat, pick your heat level. IDK what mad scientist is running the kitchen, but totally missing the mark. So, there's a phone booth in the main restaurant. You pick up the phone, a guy answers, and you tell him the "code". If you pass the test, you get invited upstairs to the speakeasy. I didn't pass since they were at "capacity". My server offered to take me up for a tour anyway. The place has a couple of empty tables and open stools at the bar. I guess that's "capacity". I stayed for a drink, and left. Make up your mind what you want to be, and I might come back. Have now gone twice, and while the interior design is modern and well executed the restaurant/bar itself seems a rushed half baked concept. The staff, while friendly, seem completely green with little direction on efficiently managing a space of people. Both visits the restaurant had just a few other patrons, and the wait times between initial order and delivery were inconsiderately long for a limited beer selection and mixed drinks that did not merit the price tag in quality. Really everyone loses in this sense, because we didn't spend any money, and we left with a feeling (especially the second time) that we didn't want to waste time with an establishment that lacks an attention to details. I really hope the internal issues get figured out, and wish the best for this venture. read more

For some assurance of the validity of my claims, I literally created an account on Yelp to post my experience at Williwaw. Arrived here around noon on a Saturday for lunch. After walking in the front door, there was no indication of open seating or a "wait to be seated" sign. We had to locate a staff member to find out it was open seating. After sitting down, it took about 10 minutes for someone to come to the table to bring menus and take our drink order. We ordered water which took another 10 minutes to be delivered. When the water came, we asked about a few sandwiches on the lunch menu, to which we were told that 3 of the 10 available sandwiches were out of stock. We then ordered a monte cristo sandwich, which on their menu is described as: ""Monte Cristo ... $12 Hawaiian sweet bread dipped in egg batter and grilled to perfection, layered with ham, turkey and cheddar, served with a side of guava jelly Served with a cup of soup, chips, or potato salad"" Sounded good. It took about 20 minutes for the sandwich to come out. When it arrived, the sandwich was literally nothing more than a poorly executed grilled ham and cheese. There was no way it was Hawaiian sweet bread, and no way it was dipped in any egg batter. Nor was it grilled to perfection. The entire sandwich was room temperature, the cheese was not melted, the ham was near cold, the turkey was not even there, and we did not receive a side of guava jelly. We had to wait another 5 minutes to see ANYONE that worked at the restaurant to flag them down in order to ask for the side of guava jelly, which took another 5 minutes to be brought out. The side cup of soup was a "homemade spicy mushroom" which was barely even warm. After debating the risks of sending food back at a restaurant, we stupidly decided to try it. The taste of the mushroom soup was actually decent if you could get past eating room temperature soup. The only way to make the sandwich edible was to smother it in the guava jelly. (Hopefully you can see the photo I took of the lame excuse for a Monte Cristo sandwich) After choking down the soup and sandwich (split by two people) our waiter came back over and asked if we were ready for the check. We said yes. It took about 10 minutes for the waiter to bring the check over. (These wait times sound crazy, but I assure you, they are very accurate.) As soon as the waiter dropped the check off, I instantly gave him my credit card in an effort to speed the process up. About 5 minutes go by, and a different man (who seemed to possibly be the manager, being dressed in jeans and a button up shirt with authoritative keys dangling from his pocket) came to the table with my credit card and receipt and said, "Here." and just dropped the clipboard with my card and receipt on the table, and walked away. Wow. What great interpersonal skills. We signed the receipt and left. To be fair to the waiter, it looked as if he was the ONLY waiter on duty for the ENTIRE restaurant. At around noon on a Saturday, there were about 12-15 tables with hungry customers. The restaurant itself was a very nice atmosphere in downtown Anchorage, with nice tables and a clean setup. However, with all of the other available dining options in downtown, I would suggest staying away from this place until they have had some time to get their stuff together as a new restaurant. We dine out a lot, and this was definitely one of the top worst dining experiences we have ever had. Wish I could say better things, as I love having new businesses/restaurants show up in Anchorage, but not today. read more

I went during an off time and had an enjoyable day on the roof. Loved the sunshine along with probably the best margarita mix in town. On the downside, the ribs I ordered were too tough to chew. When they replaced the ribs with a chicken entree, they only gave me a tiny amount. Pretty cheap move for a fancy place. I also noticed several meals being sent back to the kitchen. Something is amiss there for sure. The customers around me were snobby and wasted. I had the most fun talking to the wait staff. In conclusion, I had mixed feelings about the place. I would go again, though, just for the sunshine... Update: I've gone back a couple times and did meet some friendly customers. The concert downstairs was wholesome, entertaining and enjoyable. My friends ordered the 'shrimp tower'. Does five shrimp make a tower? It was expensive. My husband order something but said he would never order it again. I think it was the burger. That's his usual. Came here for breakfast and wish we had kept walking. With an attached coffee shop I was looking forward to a good cup of joe and a good breakfast. I didn't get either. The coffee is awful. It has a sour taste that could even be toned down with the addition of cream and sugar. I usually drink dark roast coffee black but there was no way to choke this stuff down. It was very acidic and bitter. The food wasn't awful except for the fruit which was brown from age and chopped in a way that made it look like it was attacked with a meat clever. The pancakes tasted like they came straight from a box mix and as such were not that bad. They came out warm and a little underdone for my taste. The little fried dough balls they brought out before the meal were perfect on the outside and runny raw on the inside. So why 2 stars. Well my over easy eggs were cooked perfect. The waitress was very nice and got my order correct (although the kitchen left off my bacon) and she was working alone. I have renamed this place the lure as my office overlooks the impressive rooftop patio. The setting is perfect with views of Town Square Park and other noteworthy spaces and structures. The lunch and dinner menu is limited and this is appreciated, as it is more realistic to find success with 8 dishes than it is with 80. I asked for no onions and no onions is what I got. This might not seem like a huge feat but as someone that is consistently disappointed with staff failing to meet this request it is. This failure often leads to the annoying question "are you allergic?". I went with the turkey sandwich and jicama slaw and it was spot on! This place is already slammed on every sunny day and if you don't like crowds come back when it's raining. read more

I don't know about this place. I came for a free show, which is rare in Anchorage and deserves more stars, but the service and prices were way sucky. I got a mediocre lemon drop for $10 and it took over two band songs to get. My pal's double well whiskey was $23, and her gin martini was actually a lemon vodka martini and she said it was awful. She would have complained but the server was hard to track down and it took forever to get the drinks in the first place. Meh. It's hard to make an actually bad meal and the dinner we had here was awful. The service was slow. The food was completely flavorless and the concepts were odd. On a Friday night the massive space was open and empty. We sat at the bar and waited a long time before flagging someone down and requesting menus. After looking over the menus another bartender came by and took the menus from us. We had to flag down another server to order. Horrible hipster condescending service. We ordered a Thai beef salad a French dip, Thai beef bowl and zucchini fritters. All was completely devoid of any flavor. The Thai beef lettuce wraps were just beef and wilted butter lettuce. The beef was not seasoned at all; no salt, nothing; no lime no spice; no salty, sour, spicy or sweet; just badly seared beef. Each dish had potential but was flat and poorly executed. I was really surprised that you could make dishes so bland. We asked for something to kick up the flavor and the cute but busy and condescending bartender brought us a ghost pepper sauce. Someone in the back had spent time to make an inedible hot ghost pepper sauce but neglected to add any seasonings at all to the food coming out? Ridiculous. Top knotted, bearded hipsters and pretty skinny jean people will love sitting here, not be bothered by severs or having to eat anything. But people who like food will want to avoid this place. The location is great and the space is built out well. It's huge and open and has great communal tables. It's a real shame the food was so exceptionally bad. read more

This place is dazzling! The barkeeps can whip up some mean drinks! The food is decent, hence the 4 stars, but the menu has something for everyone. Live music on the weekends usually. . And a old fashioned speak easy upstairs, you just need the password. read more

I had hoped that the food and service on the roof would improve with the Midnight Sun partnership. Upon arriving we discovered a limited menu, with only a few options. I went for the pulled pork sandwich with Ancho sweet cheeks sauce. The sandwich was super dry, and salty, and if it wasn't for my pleasure town, I'm not sure if I would of been able to choke it down. Im not sure how you can screw up a pulled pork sandwich, but Williwaw found a way. I'll give them credit that the homemade chips on the side were pretty good. Service was slow, but that's to be expected on a nice day. The atmosphere on the roof is fantastic, and there's a good assortment of cocktails and midnight sun beers. However the limited menu and the poor execution on a usually "can't miss" sandwich really disappointed. I give the atmosphere and A+, service a B-, and the food a solid D. read more

Good beer, good cheese, I think we came on a bad day however as the service was remarkably slow. Our server told us it was their first day serving breakfast, so I look forward to trying this place again when they have worked the kinks out. read more

Blues Central at Williwaw, is the bar that this review is about. I work across the street from this establishment. I am not a fan of the extra arbitrary steps involved between my entering a drinking establishment and my getting served a beverage. This bar is the extra arbitrary step bar. My second time meeting friends at Blues Central, I by passed the arbitrary step of "getting the password" and just walked in, to meet my friends, who were already seated. After a few minutes a bouncer asked me to leave because I did not have the password. No other reason. I guess you aren't allowed in if you don't do the goofy password shuffle. I like to spend money, and I haven't been asked to leave a bar in fifteen years. Maybe I will buy the password at the going out of business sale. Williwaw is a fun music venue. I have seen Andrew W.K. and also a Daft Punk tribute band play there, and had a great time. The upstairs rooftop patio is overpriced (a $18 burger), and I had the bbq ribs (decent) with potato salad (bland) and baked beans (didn't eat them, didn't like them). The service was good. All in all I'm glad the venue exists, I'm glad their are more options for live music in anchorage. But I will only be going to see live music in the future at williwaw, and I will not be returning to the Bar (blues central) that kicks out good paying sober customers who want to spend money. read more
