Exterior at night. Patio in front.

It's a little surprising to me that there are 2 Wimpy's within a 10 minute drive from each other. The one on Rylander has probably been around for 20+ years. This newer one is located in the Whites Road Center plaza. There aren't a lot of late night eats located in Pickering. It seems like everything that isn't fast food closes around 9pm. Wimpy's is open till 11pm and serves all day breakfast as well! The menu has a lot of "American" type classics - pasta, burgers, and sandwiches, on top of all the breakfast foods. We called and ordered 1lb of garlic parmesan wings and the chicken and waffles. We were quoted a time of 12 minutes before our order was ready. We showed up to lots of parking around 9pm in the plaza. They do have a patio outdoors but it's absolutely frigid so you know. After you enter the double doors going in, there are tables blocking off the rest of the restaurant. There was a TV listing out their Covid precautions and hand sanitizer around. A server came out to greet us here. The inside of the restaurant is actually really cool. Aside from that diner feel with the retro tables and chairs, the art around the walls is a mash up of old school icons (think Elvis and Marilyn Monroe) with comic culture. When I say mash up, I mean like Superman is IN the photo with Elvis. It's really unique. They had a really great system for payment. The server took out a fresh plastic bag and covered the terminal, protecting the server and us! Our order was packaged in biodegradable paper boxes or sturdy reusable plastic boxes and in an easy to carry paper bag with handles. I appreciated their commitment to being environmentally friendly. In terms of the food, I really enjoyed the wings. The chicken pieces were on the larger side of things I've seen. The breading was thick and crunchy. The sauce was cheesy and garlicky without being super saucy. Very tasty. They come with fries and I was able to upgrade to a poutine. There was a lot of gravy and real cheese curds on the poutine. The only thing were that the fries didn't really stay together very well. They were very starchy. As for the chicken and waffles, the waffles unfortunately didn't do too well and transit and were a tiny bit soggy. The chicken pieces were fried chicken breast pieces without bones. I thought the seasoning in the breading was good so it wasn't just a fried piece of chicken. There was some real flavour behind it. Overall I was really impressed with the quality of the food, the safety precautions they were taking, and the cool environment of the restaurant.

Their breakfast was really good. They also have a breakfast special that only $6.99. Great price. Service was okay a little slow but the food was good.!

Tips: - This eatery is open till 3:30 pm on weekends…read more - The French connection is excellent, and comes with both sausage links and bacon. - Take care parking nearby, as it's on a tight curve. I'm a bit surprised by the low ratings that this Sunset Grill got in 2024. My experience was the complete opposite. On Saturdays, I run errands, but have kept them closer to home these days. A couple of Saturdays ago, I completed my errands at around 2 pm. I was ready for lunch. I find it a treat to have breakfast in a restaurant. I can have breakfast items any time of day. I was good having breakfast for lunch on this day, for instance. I did a search and found that this Sunset Grill in Pickering was open till 3:30 pm. By the time that I'd get there, I'd have roughly an hour to dine in. It was perfect! I was running errands near the Markham-Pickering border. It took maybe 25 minutes with the congestion on Steeles Avenue East that becomes Taunton Road to arrive here. This eatery is across from Shoppers Drug Mart and next to Pita Pit. Caution is needed when you are driving into this area to park. It's tight and there were two cars trying to move when I was there. I found a parking spot. I backed into it. I then walked through the nice courtyard area to get to the eatery. In the summertime, I can see how popular it would be to dine outside. The courtyard and patio are lovely. I walked in. A nice man, Kayano, who would ultimately be my server, greeted me immediately. I let him know that I'd like to dine in. He said that any table near the window would be good. I liked that I got a view and a ledge to put my purse down. I got a menu. I have my usual order at Sunset Grill. I love French toast and tend to order the French connection. It comes with your choice of eggs, two sausage links, and two slices of bacon. It's the perfect meal. I ordered scrambled eggs for my choice of eggs. I also got a Diet Coke. I like getting a can of Diet Coke here. It automatically comes with a glass with ice. It feels fancy pouring the contents of the can into the glass and having a chilled glass of Diet Coke. So refreshing! It took no time for my meal to arrive. I had maple syrup and ketchup on the table already, so I was ready to eat. This place makes excellent French toast. It was crispy and soft where they should be. I loved smearing butter and pouring maple syrup on each slice. Delicious! The scrambled eggs were perfect. They were yummy, as were the sausage links and bacon. I was a happy camper. I got the bill and paid at the counter. I used a credit card to pay and tip. Done! I used the washroom before I left. It's a single stall for each washroom and a note states this fact on each door for clarity. The one that I used was exceptional clean and pleasant. I finished eating at 3:15 pm. A couple came in and the staff here didn't frown. They were fine having them dine in with fifteen minutes left before this eatery closed. Such professionalism! I had a wonderful experience here. I'd return again when I'm back in the area. (405)

The steak was cooked properly medium rare and the eggs were sunny side up as per order. The potato hash served was not appealing and looked old and dry. I would have preferred the potato latkes or pancake style or these potato cubes. The servers seemed a bit overwhelmed with the volume of diners. They did their best to bring out the orders quickly. The coffee is bottomless here, and they refilled regularly for us. The breakfast menu has great variety to satisfy your hunger. Give them a try.

Maybe I should have tried somewhere else. Read on... There was a sign out front advertising a patio and that's what really caught my attention. Walking in through the front door, the place was dark. There was somebody lying down on one of the bench seats and he jumped up when he saw me. He turned out to be my server. He directed me to their patio through the side door. It turns out, I was the only guest at the time but two tables out there hadn't been cleared of dirty dishes. My inner voice was telling me to leave but I was tired and hungry. How bad could this be? My server soon returned with cutlery and a menu. I chose the Hot Hamburger, an old-school dish consisting of a 10oz burger patty with gravy on sliced bread, mashed potatoes, and vegetables. While waiting for my order, I started noticing things in this dining area. It was a mess! There were used napkins, menus, straws, creamer containers, etc. strewn about the patio. One of the umbrellas was torn. Trust me, it wasn't good but no need to post any embarrassing photos about it. After waiting a bit longer than I had anticipated, my server showed up to apologize for the wait and said the cook prepared the incorrect dish so I had to wait a bit longer. My order finally showed up. It looked like a generous serving, kinda like what I was expecting - kinda, sorta. The gravy was very lumpy and salty, obviously made from a mix. The mashed potatoes were dry and cold. So were the veggies. I suspect these were from the incorrect plate that was made earlier. The meat was as I had expected, not bad but not great. This whole dish would have been okay if the sides and gravy were better. The service turned out to be okay - polite and attentive. Would I come back? No. With zero customers, they had more than enough time to clean up the place and turn on some lights to make the place look more inviting. Two customers came in as I was leaving. I was tempted to warn them but I figured this place needed the business.

I noticed Sunset Grill next door. I made a mental note of it and had a late lunch there on Saturday. I parked steps away from the place. There is plenty of parking. I walked in. I saw the sign to seat yourself. I did just that. My first impression was the service. I sat there for five minutes without getting a menu. One server came over and said hi, asked how I was, and then walked away. I still didn't have a menu. Forget about asking for cutlery. I walked in at around 2 pm. There were roughly five tables with folks dining. I wouldn't consider it to be overly hectic. There was a woman sweeping the floors the whole time while I waited for a menu. Interesting. Another server came over and asked what I'd like to drink. Since I visit Sunset Grill fairly regularly, I went with a Diet Coke. When my Diet Coke and glass with ice came, I got a menu. It seemed a bit backwards. Anyway, I was pleased to finally get a menu and decide what I wanted to have. I ordered my usual, which is three slices of French toast, with a side order of corned beef hash. I got brown toast. My meal took no time to make. I was hungry and happy to have food in front of me. The food quality is consistent with Sunset Grill. This place makes French toast so well that you get extra fried egg that is hanging off each slice. I love the extra snack! The corned beef hash had nice crispy parts. So flavourful! I was happy. I asked for the bill. Normally, you pay at the front counter. The server actually came over with a machine, as I used my credit card. It was a nice touch. I also got a lollypop. The women's washroom is a single stall. It was clean and you get a hook on the door. I am hoping that service can improve here. Otherwise, it's a good place to have a late lunch on the weekend. (165)

Tips: - This place opens until 3:30 pm on Saturdays…read more - The french toast is awesome! Last Saturday, I had completed fetching groceries to make a feast for Thanksgiving. It helped that the store had everything that I needed and didn't require a few more stops. I felt like a late lunch. It was 1:30 pm. It was enough time to find a breakfast joint that closes at 3 pm or so. I hadn't been to a Sunset Grill in eons. I did a search and found this one at Kingston Road, near Morningside Avenue. It's cool that I'm getting to know this area these days. I was here a couple of Saturdays ago for Boardwalk Burgers. This eatery is within the same block as Boardwalk. I had no problem finding a parking spot across from Sunset Grill at 2 pm. This restaurant closes at 3:30 pm on Saturdays. I had more than enough time to enjoy a leisurely meal. I walked in and was immediately greeted by a friendly woman. She guided me to a table. It was comfortable. Rachel was my server. She was great. She made sure that I was good throughout my meal. I got these items: - Diet Coke - French toast with scrambled eggs, sausage links, and hash browns My Diet Coke came out first. I like that Sunset Grill provides a glass with ice. It felt fancy. I loved how cold my drink was. Excellent! My food came out next. I loved the french toast. It was perfect. I spread some of the butter on both slices, followed by pouring maple syrup on them. Yum! This meal also came with my choice of eggs, sausage links, and hash browns. I asked for HP (House of Parliament) sauce. It was good with my scrambled eggs. It was a nice change of pace. I loved getting four sausage links. They were delicious and perfectly cooked. The hash browns were cubed potatoes. I liked them with both the HP sauce and ketchup. It was nice experimenting with the former. I got my bill and paid at the counter. Oddly, my credit card made a partial payment. We tried it again with the remaining sum. We were good. So weird! I used the washroom before I left. It was clean. No complaints. I had a nice experiencing dining in here on a Saturday afternoon. It was nice getting my Sunset Grill fix at long last! (382)

The hostess would advice you if there's still availability when you check in and pick up your buzzer. Make sure you do have your membership card ready as each diner has to have their own in order to qualify for the specials. For $14.99, I have no complaints. The lobster tails were sizable and fresh. The prime rib was tender and juicy even without any gravy. And for a complete dinner with salad and dessert?? Would I be back??
