I came in with my family to get donuts and drinks. The young lady says "what did you want?" Not hello or can I help you. We got donut holes and a few regular donuts. I asked her what kind of drink these fresh ones are in the cooler and she says "carrot and orange, orange, pineapple" I said can I get pineapple? She pulls out a red juice . I said "pineapple please" she reassured me the red juice was pineapple. I asked pineapple and what else? She said "No sé ( I don't know ) " My son says it's Beet and pineapple so I kindly decline the drink and ask "can I have a liquidos Pineapple and milk drink?" She says "no " I asked "why no?" Arrived in search of my fav doughnut. Was not disappointed, chocolate French twist was fresh & soft. I inquired about the Tortas & was told they are delicious. I requested a Carnitas torta & asked if the meat can be toasted as I enjoy carnitas slightly crispy which was not a problem. The torta was very flavorful. Yesterday my family had a sudden craving for donuts and we decided to order donuts from this Winchell's location and my family was surprised that UberEats delivered our donuts at 3AM and that is a rare treat. And the donuts tasted good and fresh and a little known secret about Winchell's that I didn't even know existed is their croissants that my mother happened to get and they tasted awesome and just when I thought Winchell's was famous for just donuts these croissants are worthy of trying with your donuts. Haven't been to a Winchell's in so many years I can't even remember when. We prefer to support family owned businesses especially for donuts. I always base my reviews on the Apple Fritters. Here they offer large and small sizes of Apple Fritters. We got the small ones as there wasn't a huge difference. These were just ok. Fried until crispy a little dense and lacking in real flavor. A standby, classic donut shop in Salinas. Stopped by on a Sunday evening and there was a HUGE selection of donuts to choose from. Made a wide variety of picks & they were all lovely to look at & eat up. Great textures--fresh, fluffy, cakey, moist, & crunchy depending on the type. They weren't cloyingly sweet & I appreciated that some non-glazed versions were available. Love that they have smaller sized bear claws & apple fritters. Family favorite, we visit almost every Sunday morning, always fresh and our kids prefer these donuts over other donut shops we've tried!

I have never been disappointed by this location.. The staff are friendly and from what I can see, the store is very clean.

I never heard of Winchell's, but apparently they are a fairly established donut chain extending across much of California and parts of the Midwest. As a chain, they are comparable to Dunkin Donuts. Their donut selection, at least at this location, seemed somewhat limited covering a number of traditional choices. This is definitely not the place to try an avant grade kind of donut (cocoa nibs, hibiscus, etc.), so you've been warned. I went with a chocolate cake donut with chocolate icing, a regular donut with chocolate icing and rainbow sprinkles, and a sugared donut. I was able to eat all three donuts readily without that heavy, doughy feeling afterwards. With that said, none of the donuts that I tried was particularly light or airy. Moreover, the chocolate icing was straightforward and boring. While I was never particularly taken with any of the selections, they were all decent enough. For the calorie conscious, my selections ranged 200-300 calories each. Beware the bear claw though chiming in at 700 calories! Yikes! The service was very friendly, and my purchase was take-out so I never got a sense of the ambiance, but it seemed typical enough for a donut shop. Oh, and they don't take AMEX. read more

I actually thought this place was pretty cute for the place this is. First time ever coming here and was greeted by the staff. They were helpful when we asked questions about the sandwiches they had to offer. It wasn't very busy when we entered the place but it does seem like it is the place to be after work or church for some people. And their hot sandwiches were the best for me! My partner didn't think so but I mean it seemed really rich with taste. But he thought he could get more for the price of what he spent. Which I do get I guess. But to me it seemed pretty worth it. Unless you wanna save money then okay maybe subway would be the place to go instead but I thought this little hut had good potential. read more

Love the donuts here. Better than all the other winchells in town. Thia place is always fully stocked on every variety every time I go in. They have a special when you buy 12 you get 2 free. Came here on Sunday evening after I was stuck at CVS waiting for a prescription to be filled and there weren't very many restaurants in walking distance from Winchell's. Where I live currently, there aren't any Winchell's. Being from San Diego, I grew up eating the donuts and they were always my favorite (sorry Kristen Kreme). But- I never had dinner at a donut shop. Seems almost ungodly for whatever reason. When you're desperate for food, you're desperate, so I ordered a warm chicken and bacon sandwich on a garlic bagel. It was soooo good! I mean really, it was insane how good the little thing was. I'd never had a scorned garlic bagel, but it was like eating a sandwich on those twisty garlic breadsticks from Round Table. I mean, really, it was fantastic. There weren't any veggies on it, which I was wary about, but I guess it really didn't need it. Just bacon, avocado, mustard, mayo, some kind of secret sauce all surround by a huge amount of turkey meat. Like, I know this is a donut shop, but the food is actually really impressive. This is the doughnut house of my childhood. My folks used to take my friends and I here the Saturday morning after a slumber party and I'd delight in my chocolate doughnut with chocolate frosting and sprinkles and giggle from the sugar high. Fast forward some 20 odd years and I still love this place. We swung by here over the Thanksgiving holiday when I was in town to visit my folks. They keep it simple with their old-fashioned standard doughnuts and I like it that way. They stayed fresh after 3 days too. You can't beat that and of course, friendly service with a smile. I love me some Winchell's on Main Street and so happy to see it's still standing after all these years when a lot of other things have changed in town since I've been gone. I have only been going to this location for a week. The service I would rate a 5, but today the employee who seems to be the 'boss' became upset with the other employee because she hadn't made coffee. She was very unprofessional in doing so in front of a long line of customers! I called to complain about this as it made both myself and the employee uncomfortable and she wasn't having it! Ok, so here we go. I was born & raised in Salinas, been through Winchell's on and off throughout the years, moved away and now I'm back in the area again for family stuff. For the life of me, I don't understand some of the shitty attitudes I've interacted with at this location over the span of years. It never fails. Of all the times I've been in, there's one gal who made a positive memory in terms of a customer experience, and her name is Anna Sophia (if I'm remembering it correctly), but yea..she's the only one as of late who was very pleasant, informative and actually made me feel welcomed in the building. The other staff needs to take some notes from her, that's for sure. When I came in last night, the gal working didn't acknowledge me until I addressed her (she was trying to stay out of sight towards the kitchen), I asked how she was doing & all I got was a short "fine." with some attitude as if I was disturbing her evening. Girl, you can't even fake it till you make it when it comes to being nice to a customer for all of ...hmm...three minutes? Pshh. Got it. MANAGEMENT: This is what you want to be known for? I've accepted that it's something to expect when ever a random sweet tooth strikes me, but, folks who happened to be first time patrons get treated as if they're a P.I.T.A? Having staff who is consistently unpleasant, off-putting, and down right rude to the folks whom help keep your lights on & pay their hourly wage? Methinks not is spot on. This is the only 24hr donut shop in the local area and my friend and I were craving fluffy bites of amazeballs at 3am. We drive 25 minutes to the shop and didn't get service from the guy facing away from us for almost 10 minutes. My donut holes were disgusting clouds of disappointment. They taste exactly like the Hostess Powdered Donettes and I almost vommed. My friend got a half dozen and her old fashioned glazed donut tasted 48 hours old... Found out after the fact that their donuts are fresh at 7am..... Why not just make new donuts at night? If I could give them zero stars I would. Went in on Tuesday and actually had a decent experience. However today was a completely different story. I went in with my clients I work with adults with disabilities, anyhow I went in and because I don't have millions of dollars each client (3) had to order separately. This seemed to annoy the ladies working the counter. They talked badly about me in Spanish unknowing that I completely understand Spanish. Not only did they talk crap, but they made racist remarks about me. Mind you I'm working, and its my job to include and blend into our community as much as possible. I was so polite, because I didn't want to cause a scene but this behavior is discrimination and under called for. I would get out of line to hand my clients their order and change and I'd get behind whoever was last to re order then other customers would come in and even though I was standing right there they would take their orders before mine. I brought my kids here and was HORRIFIED at the conditions of this store. I'm hoping they were just having an "off day". Neither clerk was friendly, barely civil at best. My donut was soaked with oil. Every single table had crumbs on it from previous diners (I'm hoping) and the floor from one end of the store to the the other was covered in food and trash. When I inquired how old the coffee was (yes, I am particular about my coffee) the reply was " I dunno, I was working in the back" and the clerk did not even make an offer to find out. I declined the coffee and went with a bottled beverage. An uncovered full trashcan had been pulled out from beneath the counter directly behind the register and was admitting an odor as I stood about 3-4 feet from it to pay my bill.
