The texture of the noodles was a tiny bit off, but otherwise the meat and veggies were both amazing. Grilled Summer Squash (7/10): Solid and refreshing dish. Tempura Mushrooms (7/10): Executed well. Tastes exactly as you expect, though. No surprises here. I would opt for the more unique options next time Pork Belly Skewer (7.5/10): Also executed well. Also tastes pretty standard. It is a small restaurant and has an open kitchen which allows you to watch all the magic happen. The staff was really kind and gave great recommendations. I loved the pasta it was the highlight for me alongside the tres leches. The cauliflower steak was the best I've had but was expensive for a veg dish. read more

I've been to Mayday at least 10 times and never had anything less than a 10/10 meal. I recommend them to everyone I talk to! the cocktails are great, service is fantastic, and every morsel is delicious and extremely memorable. Little did we know we were coming in on a fundraiser night... happy to contribute but was not the usual vibe. I got the Judith Beck "Ink" -a very drinkable red Austrian wine at $13/glass. My husband got a margarita sans salt. Kudos to the bartender for pouring a taste for me to confirm my choice before before making me commit. EXCELLENT service. We went for dinner on a Saturday wintery night. The place was packed, well lit (med./warm lights throughout dining room). We ordered the gem lettuce salad, honey glazed turnips and the steak frites (steak cooked medium rare) which came with homemade a1 sauce on perfectly cooked meat. What a magnificent end to my first visit to Burlington! I had been staying in an Airbnb in Old North End and was super pleased with all the restaurant options in the neighborhood. For my final night in Burlington, I decided to treat myself to a nice meal at May Day! Just a short walk from my Airbnb, I arrived to a beautifully decorated restaurant, front windows open, lots of space. I sat at the bar like I usually do for solo dining, and had a great time chatting with the bartender during my meal. He helped me pick a few yummy drinks as well. The menu is small, which I love - but everything sounded so delicious it was still hard to choose! Decided to go all in and get the steak frites! The plate was massive and the dish was plated beautifully. And THOSE GARLIC SCAPES!!! SWOOOOOOOOOOON!!! Everything about this dish was perfect. The steak was cooked to perfection, and so were the fries. And as a huge garlic lover, the garlic scapes were seriously incredible. I was up here for a work conference, with a few colleagues, and my first time in Vermont and at May Day. The waiter was very helpful with suggesting food for us. I was really happy with how the food was plated and definitely very delicious. My steak came out with blue cheese, which I didn't order, but the waiter quickly came and fixed that up for me. Great restaurant for shared plates with tons of flavor! My group of 4 enjoyed the crushed potatoes, beet salad, and brussel sprouts for appetizers. I was skeptical of the brussels since I don't like blue cheese, but it complemented them very nicely. The potatoes were my favorite. My mom and I split the swordfish entree which was small as a shared dish but insanely good. The restaurant was packed and a bit noisy due to the small space, but that just shows how popular it is. Well. What a find. Creative and well-executed offerings. Well-considered and beautifully plated. But, I've been lots of places that hit those marks but which failed to deliver in the eating thereof. Not so here. If you don't like pork belly, try theirs. Crispy, not chewy, done right. Skate cheeks, lightly battered (like Japanese tempura- I just got back from Tokyo) with a kitchen-made sauce (hate to call it tartar sauce as it was much more refined yet still invoked all the proper notes) and presented with shaved pickled cucumber with a surprise pop of pepper heat in the middle. Perfect. The fish was fresh, flaky and delightful. My husband got the mushroom risotto. I usually pass as a busy kitchen rarely will take the time to let the risotto develop, but here, they made it happen. Lovely fried mushrooms graced the top with other mushrooms in the risotto itself. A thing of beauty. Had a nice glass of the Grenache blanc to accompany. Want to come back and try the pappardelle and my husband wants to have the steak frites (a much-vaunted but much-abused dish; I suspect this place will get it right). We drove two hours from NH on a whim but feel so grateful to have found this place. Excellent server and friendly staff all around. Well done, May Day! read more

This cozy neighborhood bistro may have a limited menu, but the food is marvelous. My husband and I started out with a tasty Caesar salad made with super fresh Gem lettuce. For the entrees, I had the steak frites and he had swordfish in a creamy cauliflower purée. Both were delicious. For dessert, we shared a Pavlova, a meringue with a light custard and strawberries sprinkled with a little chopped mint leaf. It was the perfect blend of flavors and textures, and not too sweet. I just had the best date ever here!! My date was vegan and I was tryna stay in pace with her, and I'm so glad I did because the beat tartar and cabbage were hands down the best food I've had in Burlington. Simple base-ingredient dishes but done in a way that blew my mind, and didn't leave me hungry at all. Not just saying that, and that's coming from a non-vegan. And I wish I remembered our servers name, because she was amazing, the staff in general were really in touch with what we needed and also knew when to let us be. We had a great experience at May Day! I had a mocktail and my partner had a cocktail to start--both were quite tasty. They have a good number of N/A options (even beers). The atmosphere is open, bright, and inviting. Service was awesome--super friendly and attentive. The food was good but I have hopes that some items on the menu are even better. We happened to go on hot dog night and ordered all three options. They were creative and tasty but not blow your socks off good. We also wanted a little more snap--they were pretty soft. Still good, but there's some room for improvement. We also ordered the zucchini, which was again good but not amazing. The best part was the single friend squash blossom. I honestly would have ordered an entire plate of those with the zucchini puree as a dipping sauce--no need for the sautéed zucchini here.
