They offer more beer selections, and I didn't pay attention to the liquor offerings because I was looking for a Vinho Verdi for my best friend's Christmas gift. They had one label, and the two bottles I was after, which did the trick. They don't have a vast selection of wine here, the prices are a little higher than most wine stores, and they do not restock the wine quickly. No wine tastings or painting classes or fun things like that, that I could see advertised anyway. No wine totes, wine themed anything...So, like I said, if you are shopping for wine, especially a specific one, you should call first to see if they have it. The staff are friendly and it has never been busy when I've been there. Again, it fills a niche and I'm glad FS is close by!

I went into the Spirits Store because I wanted to buy four cases of wine for my party. It literally…read moretook me 15 minutes to get one of the employees to come over and assist me. Many of their bottles weren't labeled, so I had to ask the young girl who came to help me about the their prices. Less than 3 minutes into me asking what cost what, she walks off and starts helping another customer. I waited for a few minutes thinking she was going to come back, but she just went on about her business and left me hanging. So after standing there for another 10 minutes, I realized she or any other employee weren't coming back to further assist me, so I left those cases and walked out. I'm definitely not supporting a business that will just ignore their customers like that.

I thought I was doing the right thing by taking it to the counter. Boy was I wrong! I should have just put it back on the shelf and gone about my business, because the clerk BREE insisted I had to pay for it. She was unpleasant, argumentative and doesn't understand customer service. I asked for the manager. He's not there and not available. I asked for his phone number and she couldn't produce. It's a shame, because this is nice, little small business being blackened by a simple minded clerk. Again, I should have just put it back on the shelf and gone about my business. Sad I won't be able to frequent this small Huntsville business in the future. UPDATE: i am updating my score. I sent a note to the owner via the store web page. He responded in less than 24 hours and agreed to address the issue and offered compensation (although not necessary). Plan on going here again based on the excellent response by the owner!!!

The new store is just ground clearing right now and the old store is not accessible from Old railroad bed road. They are open 7 days a week despite the appearance of being closed. They have trivia, live music (see their Facebook page) and a food truck (just not on Mondays). Parking can be a little tight on busy nights but really, not too big deal. If you just want to enjoy an icy beer and chill for a bit, The Open Bottle could fit the bill just fine.

The store had one other customer this afternoon. The clerk was talking to us about an upcoming sale of special bourbons for Bourbon Heritage Month. We did find the Hennessy XO and Johnny Walker Blue. Neither were stocked at 2 ABC stores in Huntsville. They were being bought for gifts. It was nice to browse and ask questions without interrupting the store clerk. He had a few stories about different sales in the past and discussed collectible liquors. Very interesting and fun to hear the stories. When I said what I was looking for, I was taken straight the absinthe. I don't think i would have found it on my own. This is a pretty small store that doesn't seem to have the largest selection. The absinthe was only available in one size - it will probably last me the rest of my life. This sounds terrible, but I rarely leave the ABC with just what I went in for. I found a few other things to try. Even though the prices were clearly marked on the shelved, I still had sticker shock - the Alabama sin tax annoys the heck out of me. Check out was pleasant - we had a little chat about various drinks and then I was on my way. I still haven't made my Sazerac.

Sadly, we attended a funeral earlier in the morning and following the funeral we ate lunch at Grille on Maine around the corner. There were a few patrons inside the shop on this mid-afternoon July Friday and a few on the patio out front. There were two youngish men working at the counter/bar [maybe more, I only noticed 2] and they offered us no help whatsoever, I'm not sure we were even greeted. When we did get one of the employee's attention and I asked about the store and how long it had been opened he said his coworker that day had worked for the Mells for 9 years which is a long time, especially in the hospitality business. The layout of the bottles is awkward. It's an attractive way to display bottles, but inefficient in terms of reaching them, and if I recall properly, the bottles are "one deep" meaning, they don't have multiple bottles of the same wine on display. None of the wine sections were labelled [e.g., "whites," "white alternatives," "sparkling,"], so if you are trying to get in and out quickly, that probably won't happen. We were looking for an unoaked chard and they didn't have any. An unoaked pinot grigo would have been fun, too; again, they didn't have that either; nor did they offer to order any. We had a question about one of the types of wines, and the employee was not very knowledgeable about it. The price points were good on many of the bottles averaging around 11.50, and we ended up splitting a case, and the young man working there was nice enough to load it in our trunk. Maybe I'm spoiled by the Mells' friendly, knowledgeable, personal attention and service at the original Church Street Wine Shoppe which goes such a long way, and of course increases sales because who doesn't want to branch out and try wine recommendations when the proprietor asks what flavor profiles you like and makes recommendations? Also, there was no food menu anywhere that I could see, because I was curious if they offer eats. I'm grateful Church Street Wine is in Providence, I just wish the workers were better trained on the excellent customer service I've experienced at the original CSW Shoppe and more knowledgeable about the wines.
