I got a dinner salad and baked potato and my husband got clam chowder (special) and a baked potato. - Dinner rolls are served at the table. - FREE CINNAMON ROLLS on the weekends. I would give it four stars just for this alone. Cons: - Wait is long. Be prepared to dedicate at least 2-3 hours for your meal. However, you are fed through the wait so that makes it easier. - We got the appetizer because of all the rave reviews. The food here was delicious. Ambiance was also nice and definitely not what you'd expect from the outside. My son has shellfish allergies but my husband is a seafood fanatic so we are very careful when we dine at seafood restaurants and I am happy to say that Windward Passage was able to accommodate our dietary restrictions. If it weren't for the hostess this would be a 5-star review from me. I called ahead to check on the wait and she said there wasn't one in the dining room but the bar was packed--I joked and said that's ok because we have kids and she hung up... Guess I should've taken the hint, but we went anyway because my husband wanted oysters. They didn't give us a kids' menu, but the waitress said they could do kids meals--she suggested catfish, so that's what we got. My two kids were angels all through dinner. When my 2-year-old was finished, he got up from his seat and walked straight to me to feel his tummy since he was so full... the hostess stopped him and told him he needed to sit in his seat. Are you kidding me? If my kid was running around or being disruptive maybe I'd understand, but this kid was not. She really upset him, which really upset me. The waitress, service, food, etc. were great (and that cinnamon roll--omg!), but the hostess ended our dinner on a sour note. Very unfortunate. If you want to surprise your dinner pals, take them here. They will think they are walking into a small dive in a strip mall near Great Harvest Bread Co. and a thrift store, and instead you'll feel like you walked into Pirates of the Caribbean. There are no windows in this restaurant, and the walls are panelled in very dark wood. Old fashioned ship decor like a wooden steering wheel and fishing nets are accented with twinkly lights. I got such a kick out of it because it was just not what I expected. As far as the menu, it's traditional surf and turf but I considered the quality/value mix to be better than about anything else in this part of town. Hubby got a tuna steak for $14 including two big sides, dinner salad and rolls. I got fried white fish and it was lovely with steamed veggies. The waitress gave the hubby a hard time, more akin to a 50's diner style interaction (you know, red lipstick, faux hair, attitude), which I enjoyed. She mentioned she'd waited there for 15 years! A warning about the general crowd, especially the earlier in the day you go -- let's just say our 20-something selves were the youngest patrons by a good 30-40 years. We sat in the bar at a table because there was a 45 minute wait for the dining room. That was fine with me...I like the bar atmosphere especially here. We all wanted steak and we all ordered steak. One good thing was you could get it Pittsburgh style which is charred on the outside and rare on the inside. The attempt was good and the inside was perfectly cooked to my liking but in my opinion, it could have used more "char" on the outside, that's the best part of ordering Pittsburgh style. Another good thing was you good mix and match stuff and make up your own plate. They had soft shell crab on the menu and I live for those...yum yum yum! But I really was craving a steak too. Tiffany, our server, told me no problem, we can do both! Sweetness! The soft shell crabs were huge, lots of meaty delicousness and the breading was fantastic. We went to this restaurant after using Yelp search, read some of the reviews and decided to give it a try. The restaurant is located in a strip mall, I have been to the UPS store next to the restaurant many times without knowing that this restaurant was next to it. The inside is a throw back to the 70's dark wood paneling and dimly lit.Based of the reviews i decided to try the " Devils on Horseback-- not very impressed they were bland and tasteless all I got was the heat from the hot sauce. Main courses are served with a salad choice of potatoes or rice plus vegetable of the day. Salads was ok, main course I chose the stuffed flounder and my wife went for the cod, both dishes tasted as though they had come from the deep freeze even the rolls that were served tasted as thought they had been frozen. Okay, first word of advice, if you're using your iPhone for directions to this restaurant, do not go north onto Reed Rd from Henderson like it tells you; go south and it's tucked away just on the right side of the strip mall behind the CVS. Not their fault, just annoying to find in busy traffic if you haven't already been there. Immediately upon entering, it felt as though I warped back into time to the old seafaring days of Moby Dick. Everything has a very quaint, rustic look that fits quite well into the theme. They even packed the place with senior citizens to exude its old fashioned appeal! :-) Joking aside, it was obvious that most of its patrons were regulars...for many years; at least at lunchtime that is. I'd be curious to see how much the crowd changes during the dinner shift, because there was no one below the age of 50 while I was there, which tells me one of two things. Either the people my age are clearly missing out or I know where I'm bringing my grandchildren when I lose my ability to chew. On to the service and food; average and slightly above average, respectively. The menu itself was rather insufficient in terms of detail and suggesting local favorites. The server, although cordial, did not really give the impression that she was excited to be there. Kind of like the "same shit, different day" attitude. Besides that, the service did meet my expectations, with the exception of having to request a drink refill one time. I started my meal with the Bean and Ham Soup Special of the Day which was quite hearty and would be perfect comfort food on a cold winter day. For an entree, I had the Pot Roast with Roasted Redskin Potatoes and Carrots. The taste was that of home cooking, which I love, but was lacking in the flavor department. With just a little creative seasoning in the kitchen, this plate could be really great. Coupled with the soup, everything was very filling. Now before I tell anyone that it's not really worth going unless you're in the area, I'd like to stop by again for dinner for several reasons. First and foremost, I clearly made a mistake by going into this seafood restaurant and not trying any seafood. As I've typed this, I noticed a 5 star review that suggests the Oysters Rockefeller, Peel and Eat Shrimp, and King Crab Legs; things I didn't really notice on the lunch menu for obvious reasons. I have to say the majority of the previous reviewers have it right. This restaurant is quite an experience. DH and I grew up in Florida during the 70s. Although he and I never knew each other as children, we had the same flashback experiences of eating at a Florida seafood restaurant as a child in the 1970s. In fact, there was a restaurant in Clearwater, Florida that is now long gone called the Oyster Bar. It had dark wood, no windows, and decor that wasn't too far off from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney: wall lamps shaped like ship lanterns, rigging from ships separating the booths. One might feel he or she is sitting at a table in the hold of an old ship, but for the lack of the rolling and pitching one might expect to feel if one were truly sitting at a table in the hold of an old ship. The Oyster Bar in Clearwater was one of many such type of seafood restaurants in the 70s. When my DH and I walked in the door with our 12yo daughters, I had to stop and center myself. For just a moment, I felt I was back at the Oyster Bar in Florida. I wondered how far this feeling would go. I came here due to my fellow Yelpers' reviews. Would the food continue the nostalgic sensation and cause me to visit the restaurant again and again? We visited for lunch. The vast majority of the clientele were senior citizens, although there were a few younger people here and there. The menu selection was what I expected and the prices were decent. I got the scallops. I almost got them broiled, but at the last minute ordered fried. (Who didn't eat primarily fried food in the 70s?) DH got fried shrimp. The girls who normally enjoy seafood wanted to split the half pound burger. One DD got a side of applesauce. The other a garden salad. The salad was a typical old school salad: A plate of mostly lettuce, a wedge of tomato, and some sliced carrot. The only thing missing were the Captain Wafers. DDs' burger was nicely charred. The bun was grilled as well (bonus!). It was served with chips. DH's shrimp were large and not overly breaded. The seasoning was exactly as I remembered, er.. imagined, it would be. My scallops were also large and nicely breaded. Both meals came with tasty fries and a vegetable medley of green beans and carrots. The fries and veggies did need some salt and pepper, but I expected that so I had no problem adding a bit of my own. Overall we did enjoy ourselves and will return. The worst that I can say is that the seasoning was light on the sides. I assume the owner is catering to the majority of his clientele and is toning the seasoning down for those who are likely watching their sodium intake. Of course so much of what we eat in restaurants today is overly salted. Our palettes have become oversaturated with heavily salted food, especially in the chain restaurants. I don't mind being given the choice to salt and pepper my own food rather than receiving a plate of food which will likely lead to a stroke. As I said, we tried it out for lunch and will go again in the near future for dinner. Next time, I plan to try a prime rib or steak previous Yelpers have raved about. read more

The Windward is obviously popular due to the wait. The restaurant is small, dark, and honestly a bit outdated. But if you don't judge the book by its cover and go to appreciate the food you won't be disappointed. I had a shrimp cocktail and it tasted fresh. I had a regular salad which came with warm bread and the oddest of things- a cinnamon roll. I never asked why the cinnamon roll but maybe there is some history to it. And for my meal I had prime rib with red potatoes and broccoli. All of the food tasted wonderful and the prime rib came out the perfect medium rare. However I'm a bit perplexed by the horseradish sauce because it had more dill than horseradish. (But maybe that's how they do it in Ohio) However my primary complaint about the meal was the amount of time it took for the meal to come out after the salad. And the waitress was polite but wasn't very attentive on refilling my glass. But, truthfully, I would recommend Windward to anyone wanting something casual but delicious and have time to wait. read more

I can't believe I've lived here for 26 years and only just discovered this place recently. The decor is Old School Nautical Kitsch. Probably nothing has been redecorated here since they opened in 1973. Prices are quite reasonable. Walleye dinner for $18.50 and 6 once filet mignon dinner for $17.25, for example. Portions are ample, and all entrees include salad of your choice, potato of your choice or rice, and cooked vegetable of the day. Steaks are generously hand cut: my 6 ounce filet was at least 8 ounces for sure. Some other Yelp reviews have complained that the food is "bland." In point of fact, much of the food did benefit from a generous application of salt after it reached the table. However, I don't mind being able to set my own level of salt, and as my 12 year old helpfully pointed out, it's good for people on low sodium diets. The food was solid good. I was delighted to discover one of the salad choices is Waldorf Salad. Who makes Waldorf Salad anymore? Steaks were very nicely done with a great char on the outside, cooked perfectly to order on the inside. The cold water Lobster tail was nicely grilled, and served with lemon and melted butter on one of those little tea candle warmers. Fried Walleye, an Ohio standard, was well executed. French fries were excellent. And, they have some killer deserts. Our waitress was super friendly and attentive, and called us all "Darlin." Yes, you can get better seafood and steaks at other Columbus area restaurants, but you'll pay a fair bit more, and you won't have a wooden Ship's Maidenhead on the wall behind you, peering over your shoulder to see what you ordered. This was by far one of the craziest dining experiences ever but definitely a good one! We decided to try this place based on the reviews on yelp. As many have stated, if you are 40s or younger, you will be at least half the age of the majority of the other clientele in the restaurant. Don't let this scare you away! It actually adds to the ambiance! We asked our server about this, and she said the nickname of the restaurant is "Heaven's Waiting Room!" These "experienced" diners provided quite the entertainment for us as they have to speak loudly to hear each other, and it was pretty comical! Add to that the fact than many of them were drinking cocktails so they were a bit tipsy! But, I regress! Let's get on to the food! The menu has so many wonderful choices that we were torn as we both love seafood and steak. So we opted for peel and eat shrimp and prime rib. The shrimp was cooked perfectly! Sometimes shrimp can be rubbery because of overcooking. Not the case here! It was nice and firm. What I appreciated most was when they brought it out, there was cocktail sauce and a side of horseradish. Their cocktail sauce is mild so this provided the opportunity to doctor it a bit if you prefer a spicier cocktail sauce. Our salads arrived next, and they were a simple garden salad, but the homemade ranch dressing rocked!! Because we dined on a weekend, cinnamon rolls came with our meal. They were pretty tasty as well. Then, little did we know, our world was about to be rocked! Our prime rib dinners came out, and the portion size and cooking temperature were 100% spot on! They were, hands down, the best prime rib we have ever eaten! We are from Indianapolis which is home to St. Elmo's Steakhouse. Our steaks at Windward had theirs beat all the way around. They were tender and delicious! Hubby had the baked potato while I ordered red skin potatoes. Both were cooked perfectly! Both were served with about a half a stalk of broccoli which was just steamed. Nothing special there. All in all, we had a delightful experience! Our server was very attentive even though the bar area where we sat filled up all at once! She was quick with refills and brought our courses out in perfect timing. We would finish one thing, and the next arrived shortly after! We will definitely return to Windward when we are visiting Columbus again! I've been going to Windward for the past 20 years and I've always loved it! The lunch specials are inexpensive and out of the is world - go on Wednesdays for the corned beef special. Their reuben sandwich is amazing! The dining room is very crowded at dinner time, but the wait is not out of this world, plus the drink prices are terrific, plus the bartenders overpour. If you're going at dinner time, order the king crab legs, perch, or catfish. The steaks are decent. Also, on Saturday nights, they give out homemade cinnamon rolls! read more

I loved this place! Some friends suggested dinner here while we were visiting, they had recently discovered it. I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. There was a wait, even though our friends made reservations. Although, the staff was so nice , it was quickly forgotten. Drinks and food are VERY reasonable here. I never thought I'd be eating oysters in Ohio, but the Chesapeake Bay oysters kick the hell out of the oysters we get on the West Coast. The scallops I had were fantastic and the drinks were great too. Food and drinks came fairly quickly, and the surprise cinnamon rolls were AWESOME! We liked it so much we brought my dad back on our last night in Columbus. Once again, everything was great. At one point, we were the only people left , and our server never made us feel rushed. First off, the location is crazy. Who would have even thought this place was a restaurant from the outside?! Super small and cramped in a busy plaza. The wait is long on the weekends, and the place is pretty small so be prepared. At least there's a small waiting area with some chairs and a bench. The service is interesting. Not so kind at first because they're super busy. But once you get seated and ready to go everything is great! Server never left us needing anything. Drinks were always full! The food is DELICIOUS! I agree with many of the other reviewers that Windward Passage was a nice surprise. Cozy, kitschy, warm service, and good food. We stopped in for lunch on a recent Wednesday. The dining room was full, and so we grabbed a table in the bar. The decor is 1977 dark costal shanty style, which actually works pretty well. There were a lot of regulars there - probably because it seems comfortable, friendly, and reliable. The patrons seemed to be 60% active retirees and 40% businesspeople. I'm not sure whether the do reservations, but it is probably a good idea to call ahead for dinner. I had the perch entree, which came with four lightly breaded and fried filets, perfectly cooked and not too heavy. It came with fries and mixed (probably canned) veggies. Not Alex's or the Refectory, but tasty. She ordered the shrimp and crab salad, which was good-sized. It got a thumbs up because they didn't skimp on the seafood and because it was mixed greens and not iceberg. The dessert menu lacked a lactose free option, so I didn't get to try anything, but they had several traditional options for non lactards. Windward Passage is a good bet for seafood comfort dishes. One of the best restaurants in town. Two of our friends got my wife and I to go and we're hooked. We drove through New England on our honeymoon a few years ago and we would always talk about how amazing the seafood was there. Well, now we talk about how amazing the seafood is at Windward. The ambiance is old-timey and so is the clientele (not us - yet), but I think you have to have a saltiness with your seafood, no? Everything is good. The staff is very attentive and often colorful. The food tastes that the fisherman just brought it in. So fresh. Ample portions. The location in a UA strip mall does not do this place justice. I suppose that keeps it a hidden gem. read more

We just moved to the area and are looking for new places to eat. We decided to try this place based on the reviews. Perhaps it's because we didn't order any seafood...but I was not impressed. A waitress told us when we arrived that a table would be cleared for us in a moment. We stood there for about 10 minutes being ignored. We finally asked the host and he had no idea that we were waiting for a table. Service from there on was slow, slow, sloooooooooow. The restaurant was busy, I get that. But I saw our waitress take the order of people that were seated after us before she took ours. Several tables worth... When our food came, it was hot. The grilled chicken sandwich had so little flavor that my other half had to put sour cream on it from his baked potato. The French dip was hot and pretty tasty...but small. Both sandwiches were on 6 inch hoagie buns. For a $10 sandwich I expected a little more. The fries were pretty tasty. The bad tasting fountain sodas were $2.50 each. It certainly wasn't the worst dining experience I've ever had...but there are enough places around to try that we won't be going back to this one. read more

My wife & I visited this restaurant after hearing good things about it . We were very satisfied with our experience there . Food was very tasty , ample portions and the wait staff was very attentive . We had arrived there a few minutes before opening . Bar was open so we waited there for a short time before dinner . Dark and relaxing inside. You wouldn't think this place would be what it is because it's in a strip mall but I recommend checking it out if you want a quiet atmosphere. We found this place randomly on our phones search engine after being told there was a 2-3 hour wait at most other restaurants we called. With less than a 20 minute late we gave it a try. I was not optimistic about the food quality in such a small, dark restaurant hidden in a shopping plaza. However, the staff was extremely friendly and accommodating to our party of 8 with 2 toddlers. The ranch dressing was made in house and was amazing. Two of the meals came with a cinnamon roll which was also delicious. The toddlers both had grilled cheese sandwiches, which were made on thick bread and so good. We had 3 cheeseburgers with fries, a fried chicken sandwich with a baked potato, a full slab of ribs, and a stuffed salmon meal. Out of 8 people we did not have 1 complaint. My husband, my parents, and I used to LOVE coming here... before we had a baby. This place is not child-friendly. The food is good, the atmosphere is quirky, and the service is pretty friendly (outside of the hostess). The fact that they don't take reservations and are usually on a long wait is a downside, but if you go early (like 5:30pm), it's not a problem. However, we tried to take my 5 month-old baby here tonight, and we ended up walking out. We were excited to go here for the first time after the baby was born and made sure to get there early so that we wouldn't have to wait on the front end and end up with a cranky baby at the end of the meal. We arrived around 5:10pm, and several people walked in after us. We said, "Wow, we got here just in time." They were clearing and cleaning tables in the dining room, so we had high hopes. Still, we waited a good 10 minutes to even put our name down for a table because the hostess was taking carryout orders. After we put our name down for a table for 3 adults and a baby, another customer came in and asked the hostess for a table for 6 but said that she was the only one from her party there and wasn't sure when the others would arrive. Rather than seating us (3 adults and a baby) at that table, the hostess seated the lone woman at a table for six, and then she seated a couple who had come in after us at a booth. She then came back and said to us, "Well, I can get a table for you, but it'll be another 15 minutes." It sounded like, by asking her to accommodate my daughter, we'd asked her something unreasonable and unpleasant. We'd already been waiting about 15 minutes. I said, "That's okay, we'll just go." She said, "Okay! Sorry!" without sounding at all sorry. My parents got the same impression I did - that we were "undesirable" because of the baby. I wouldn't have thought anything of it, except that, if you read another review here, it looks like this is consistent issue with this hostess. I used to LOVE WP. It has inexpensive drinks, a fun old school atmosphere, homemade ranch dressing and the best crab legs in town. You could count on a well-aged server to know the menu backward and forward and get you served up right quick. A great family place and locally owned too. I was concerned when the local paper reported the Columbus Department of Health had given it repeated warnings and threatened to shut it down so I didn't go for a while. But with Lent and the desire for crab legs, I gave in. We went on a Friday night and had no wait although, like always, the place was nicely busy. Super friendly hostess seats us. Waiter comes up and he's sweating and early 20's and seems rushed but takes our order but seems upset when we switch our daughters drink order (Our bad). I notice the price of my entree is a full $10 higher than photos of the menu I've seen online. ($31 comes with salad, roll, baked potato, green veggie). The crab legs come out and I cannot eat them. They are so mushy that I can't crack them, the shell is basically ripping like fabric. I can't get our waiters attention but hostess returns, apologizes, confirms I"m the second person to return their crab legs, and takes the plate away. I eat the potato of my partners plate. The bill comes and the crab legs are on it. I ask the waiter to remove the crab legs and he said "No,because I watched you eat them." I assured him that I didn't and had to have the hostess confirm this. He yelled at me loudly and it surprised other customers. We left quickly. I called the next day to tell the manager and his response was, "I know exactly what waiter that was. He gets complaints all the time, but it's really hard to find help waiting tables." There was no compensatory offer. So with that being said, I will be looking for another crab leg place. I don't mind driving to The Top in Whitehall for such a special treat but if anyone knows of another place, I'd be happy to check it out and report back. Such a shame. read more
