Windward, a place with an overwhelming smell of Old Navy, has a particular crowd of regulars every Friday afternoon. The conversations are of the crazy traffic in Atlanta, the back streets from Orlando to Gainesville, Florida, who they dated after Korea and before marriage, the entire background story of the baseball pitcher seen on the TV, and a thousand word explanation of why TV remotes stop functioning. If you couldn't guess--it's a gaggle of elderly men. Kind and garrulous, they come to down "gin-a-tonics," cheep wines, and beer. The place is total throwback. The staff looks at you funny for zoning out at a cell phone. The beer selection here when I asked my Pall Mall voiced bartender is "Bud on tap. Bottles are Budweiser, Bud Lite, Miller, Miller Lite, Coors . . ." Yeah, yeah. I get the drift. The place is known for seafood, which sixty percent should be called 'lake food' because walleye and catfish hardly qualifies the same as crab and lobster. ( though the freshwater fish is decent here.) The place in my opinion is overrated. Having visited Windward many times through the years I feel they do not measure up to the expectation brought by many who suggest it, a lofty rating reflected by Yelpers. Then again I may be a tough nut to crack with my dislike of Columbus seafood due to experiencing many places in Miami, Key Largo, Nagshead. Still, the place is good, for a landlocked city. Treat my rating as high 3 bleeding into a low four. They do make wonderful oysters of which is featured on several dishes here. The plater ordered by the gent beside me made me regret my selection of cod. I haven't had oysters here in some time, but they looked scrumptious. My cod came with a soup and roll course of which I picked chowder. The chowder was nothing special. It was too watery, as if they pored to much water into a can of Campbell's. The roll and cinnamon bun were good. My Cod was excellently cooked; made in white wine and garlic, it was hot all they way through without a burn. I enjoyed devouring the tender, buttery meat. The decor of the place is cool. The place is dark. The walls look like old shipwood. The windows are oval cutouts to simulate that on fishing boat. Above had wooden boxes suggesting lobster traps. The left hand of the bar is risen; you walk up a step to sit there. I love that as I like to sit high. The service is old fashion, blue collar. It couldn't be more different than the cosmo professionalism of say Barley's, the last place I visited, without falling into unacceptability. They work hard and do a good job, just don't expect anything more than Rhea Perlman and Woody Harrelson. Parking here is easy as it is in the mall next to Sunny Side behind Starbucks. If you come for dinner shift on Friday beware, a line builds fast. I went here last night for dinner and I had high hopes for the place after seeing the crowds. I had to wait a half hour for a table and they were still packing them in when I was finished eating. I saw another diner eating a fish dish and asked him what it was so that's what I ordered. It was walleye and it came with a salad and two vegetables. I took the standards of rice (a mixture of white and wild) and brocolli. The fish had been frozen and the waitress had told me that. The rice was good but the brocolli not very much so. They had a lot of appetizers that I would have liked to tried but I was afraid that I wouldn''t have room for them wiith all the food I had coming. The fish was good, the salad was good, and the rice was good. The brocolli not so hot. Comparing the overall experience to my favorite fish houses, not all that great. I think I'll stick to the fish market. Oh, almost forgot the bread service. I got a cinnamon roll which was too sweet to eat with dinner and a couple of garden variety rolls which weren't very good. read more

I had no idea this place existed for the 10+ years I have in and out of Columbus. Heck I used to live 2 miles from it. My new work friends suggested it one day. They call it OPP. (Old people place) You see all the pictures of this place? Dark aren't they? This place is like going into the hold of an old pirate ship. When you go in the front door, you WILL squint and wonder where to go, and how to get inside. The effect is fun. It whooshes you away from the bright and loud hustle and bustle of everyday life and you will be transported into a dark wood box filled with 60-80 years old people wearing their best dinner clothes. All the old people jokes aside, the food is great. It's simple, classic meals, prepared well. The corned beef is great, and the pot roast is so good it will disappear off your plate so fast you will think your stomach stole it. They serve alcohol and have a full bar. I have only been here for lunch so I have no idea how dinner service is. The ladies at my work are not fans of Windward for some reason. I would say 6/6 girls never want to go here, while the guys are always down. I am not sure why, but I thought it was relevant. If you try this out as a date spot, make sure your girl is a foodie or likes to try different things. Had a nice dining experience on a late Friday evening. If you are hungry for seafood, check out this place. The wait staff make the experience; very colorful, friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable of the menu. Ask for which fish is fresh, if they don't already tell you. Dinners were good, but nothing particularly special. I had the stuffed flounder. The stuffing was rather bland. They did bring sweet rolls to the table - heavenly! Interior is casual and been around for a while. The restuarant seems to cater to the more senior crowd. Patrons and staff seem to know each other quite well; lots of regulars. It may not be a place to go for a quiet, romantic or intimate evening. It was noisy, but busy. I could tell you the conversations from both sides of mine. At one point, one guy pulled out his harmonica and started belting out a couple tunes after another table did some harmonizing of old tunes together. It was a fun experience. read more

Pleasant surprise! A hidden gem for sure since I've driven by this place a thousand times and never noticed it. Our friends suggested we meet here for dinner. It's in a shopping plaza and upon entering its like jumping back 60 years and like you're inside of a ship. Very dark! Sadly, they don't take reservations but the bar area is almost just as big as the dining room so we snagged a booth there and avoided the 45 minute wait on a Saturday night. In the end, the bar is way more "hoppin" than the dining room anyways so I was happy! We are in our early thirties and were the youngest people in there by at least 20-30 years BUT who cares! It was really fun to change it up for once. We were probably a bit louder than the clientele cared for though :-) The only weird part was they don't play any background music which drives me crazy. The prices are SOO cheap.. they have a full bar (bottles for beers) and the seafood is surprisingly good!! Very fresh and cooked very well! Our waitress was nice too. The cinnamon rolls came with our salads and WOW took us back 20 years! Loved the rolls!! Kinda wish they came after dinner but still delicious! Um, not so great. I understand the lack of change to keep the appeal to the locals. But I don't see myself venturing back for the atmosphere. Located in an Upper Arlington strip mall (behind CVS on Henderson and Reed), it was difficult to find. Upon walking in, I immediately missed my grandparents. That would be the smell of the smoke and home cooking that seems to have saturated the wooden walls and EVERY bit of Windward. With decorations of lobster cages, oars, boat ropes, and compasses, it's not hard to forget the theme. The daily specials of Yellow Perch, Catfish and Walleye, I found out, never change. I ordered the yellow perch broiled. It was a little overdone and served with mayonnaise rather than tarter sauce and a side of chips. I opted for the chips instead of the fries, because I had a feeling they were going to be the steak cut type that always seem to be served undercooked. The vegetable side was green beans and carrots which were already cooked in a lot of butter. There goes the request of steamed with no butter. I choose to pass on the veggies and rolls, and asked to replace both with a side salad. Sure I could! ...for $2.00. boo-kay. The service was great! The distractions and noise, although somewhat busy, was minimal. The prices were outstanding! Overall, really it wasn't horrible, just not my cup of tea. However, one particular server is always rude, makes disparaging comments about the patrons and makes offensive noises when walking by patrons of color. I absolutely loved the Winward Passage. I knew the restaurant would be busy on a Friday night, so I was prepared to wait. Luckily, there was one seat at the bar and another seat became available after about 15 minutes which was perfect for my mom and I. If you don't mind dining later, I highly recommend that as we didn't arrive until about 8:30. I ordered the delicious prime rib and king crab leg dinner. My mom had the shrimp scampi, and we shared shrimp cocktail. All of this deliciousness, with four drinks, totaled $85. I have spent much more at Roosters! The bartender was great. Old school, strong drinks and impeccable service. Finally, what I thought added to the experience were the regulars. Everyone was super nice and glad that my mom and I were having a good experience. Oh man. So this is probably some of the best food I've had at a restaurant in a long time. Regarding the atmosphere, it's definitely a place full of regulars and many people were greeted by their first name as they came in, but that did not make me feel out of place at all as a newbie. Everyone was super friendly from the hostess to the waiter. For an appetizer, we got the Coquilles St-Jacques, amazing. I've never had this dish before, but it was seriously the best tasting item I've eaten in a long time. We also split a bowl of the clam chowder, which was good, but seriously out staged by the Coquilles St-Jacques. Dinner for me was the surf and turf, a huge slice of tender prime rib and a half pound of king crab legs with a loaded baked potato. Again, all delicious even down to the loaded baked potato. Girlfriend got a lobster tail, which she also said was great. This place is a testament that good seafood doesn't have to come from a place that you have to dress up to come to. This is the perfect place to come to after work and have a great meal without having to worry about getting fancy before you head out. Wait wasn't bad on a Tuesday night, we sat in the lounge which is seat your self so we had a booth within about ten minutes. Otherwise the wait probably would have been 15-20 minutes I figure with our place on the line. The only negative I found about this place was the lights they put on the wall right above the booth's table... WAY too bright in such a dimly lit place, it was seriously like a 60 watt daylight bulb that you had to have in your face the whole time you were eating. I was able to move to the edge of the table to avoid that light, but man, kick that bad boy down to a 30 watt bulb or something! read more

I have been a fan of the Windward Passage for years. It is always reliable for excellent seafood, including Lake Erie Walleye and Perch. They also offer unbelievably good prime rib, steaks, and burgers. The ranch dressing, dinner rolls, even the vegetables are outstanding. A special treat is that you will find some old favorites that are rarely seen on menus these days: Coquilles St. Jacques, Oysters Rockefeller, also prepared other ways, and always a few special seafood dinner offerings. I've lived by this place for four years now and My wife and I just tried it for the first time a couple of weeks ago. A coworker of mine told me tales of how he and his grandmother would go there for special occasions and the like. He warned me of the over 60 crowd, but that kind of stuff doesn't bother me. It's true, the clientele is much older, but who cares? Old folks know good food too. The decor is pretty outrageous. Very nautical. A lot of dark woods, ropes and nets. When you enter, It's like stepping onto a 18th century pirate ship. The first thing you see upon entering is the horseshoe shaped bar, in it's own space, away from the dining room. The dining room is thematic and reminds me of being on a boat. The food and service was excellent! We started with the oysters remick which was baked oysters with Swiss cheese and remick sauce. The remick sauce was simply mayo, ketchup and horseradish. It was delicious! My wife had the shrimp scampi which she enjoyed and I opted for the liver and onions. It was fair. I was expecting some sauce and bacon of which there was none. That's ok, it still tasted pretty awesome. I love liver and onions. I always ask the server if they sell a lot. We went for our 42nd anniversary and we were very pleased. Service was outstanding. We did arrive right when they opened on a Tuesday evening. We were seated immediately in a booth as requested. Our server,Andy was very nice. She approached the table immediately and asked about drink orders. The wife and I both ordered drinks, her a margarita and me an old fashioned. Be aware, the drinks are very strong and if you are driving 1 will be enough . We both ordered the 12 oz. prime rib. It came with choice of 2 sides and a veggie. We had salads and baked potatoes. The veggie was green beans. The food was served at a nice tempo, salads finished, the main course arrived. The Prime rib was an impressive piece of beef with almost no fat and cooked to perfection. After living in Columbus all my life, I FINALLY went to Windward to eat. I was mad that I didnt do it sooner. I love the look and feel of the place. Nice and cozy. The food was amazing. Everything we ordered came out perfect and was delicious. We got there around 7 and the place was full so we sat at the bar. Within 20 minutes there was about 10 couples waiting in the lobby. Restaurants of a certain age are like people. They develop a habit. A style. A form of character intrinsic to who (or what) they are. You either "get it" or you don't. It's how friendships are made. Some people are your style, and some aren't. Sometimes you get their jokes, and sometimes they fall flat. It's the nature of the human condition to gravitate towards what resonates with you. Windward passage is an institution. I'm 36 and I still feel woefully unqualified to judge this place, and yet, I feel obligated to do so becasue of how this place is emblematic of the metaphor I just spent way too much time on. It has character. Style. A tone all it's own. And it works for me. But not with everyone. Maybe it's the ambiance. Maybe it's the cavalier-yet-funny nature and attitudes of the staff. A sort of benign familiarity that some, shall we say, South of Lane, may find a bit too intimate for their liking. Maybe it's straight up the food - seafood is a form of cuisine that is about as divisive an issue for people as pizza toppings. But Windward either grabs you, or it drives you away, it seems. It grabs me. I love the darkened ambiance that hearkens back to my childhood of eating in only lightly-illuminated diners and dives of Toledo, Ohio. There was a restaurant called Betsy Ross that is deeply evocative of Windward Passage. It lacked a nautical theme like Windward, but it was all dark wood, stained glass, and clearly at some point in its life was an original IHOP but took a deep swerve with change in ownership. I liked it. I missed it. Windward gives a bit of that back to me. I also like the service. I'm a people person, and frankly, I'm a little casual about it. Familiar. I want to banter with the folks taking my order. Here, I feel it's expected. Finally, the food. Honestly, for a seafood joint, the Prime Rib is freaking AWESOME. Just putting it out there. But the oysters, the fried fish, the fried *anything*, the deserts...oi vay. For a kid from the rustbelt that loves his hearty food served in a dark corner surrounded by friends...this place is top shelf. The only real drawback is the punch to the pocketbook. I met my friend Dale this evening and he ordered the strip steak which was cooked to perfection and I ordered the perch dinner and absolutely loved it. They will let you know if the fish is fresh or if it's frozen and I will tell you the Alaskan king crab legs are the best you'll find in town for the price. Our server Natalie rocked it. Heard about this placee for years and we tried it with a fairly large family group (10). We had to split up 4 and 6 but were seated in close proximity. Appetizers were really good. Oysters Rockefeller and shrimp cocktail. Shrimp was fresh and oysters were cooked perfectly. I had broiled scallops, wife had filet. Other diners at our table had surf and turf combos involving filet, prime rib, king crab legs and an enormous lobster tail. Included in the meal were choice of salad (we mostly opted for the house made Waldorf, it was excellent). The scallops were perfect as was the filet. Key lime pie was well done also. Service was attentive and well paced. Wine list was uninspired but there were a few gems (Chas. Krug Cabernet at a nice price point). Overall well worth the visit. Held a birthday dinner with a total of five. We were greeted and seated immediately upon entering. Our waiter was quick and efficient, but gave us ample time to choose and answered several menu questions. Four of us got fish dishes and one a filet. Every meal came out cooked perfectly. I started with the Waldorf salad and then I enjoyed the lightly breaded sautéed walleye with baked potato and broccoli. The wine by the glass selection was sufficient in addition to a full bar. The only knock were the rolls weren't as fresh as we are used to getting there. Compliments to the team for delivering a complimentary dessert with candle and coffee to our 86 year old birthday girl. Is this a trendy, hipster place to compare to a Cameron Mitchell restaurant? Absolutely not, and that's a good thing. The prices are better and the food is way better. I would have never guessed that you could get seafood like this in Columbus. We got a bottle of wine and a couple raw oysters to start. I normally wouldn't get raw oysters in Columbus, but we just went for it. They were great, right up there with oysters I have had on the Gulf Coast and in Delaware recently. The server was helpful, friendly, and efficient. This place is the kind of old school restaurant you want to go to when you are hungry- entrees come with a choice of soup/salad, a starch, and vegetable. When we went, they did not have fresh walleye or perch (frozen offered instead), so I got the fresh mahi. It's some of the best mahi I have ever had, and I order it a lot on the coast. My girlfriend got a pound of snow crab legs and she was very enthusiastic about them. If you like seafood and aren't someone who hinges your dining experience on a trendy environment, you should definitely check this place out. read more

Really want to like this place due to it being a local option, but it's just not that good. Their steak and seafood are both mediocre. My wife and I have tried each, respectively, twice. We can prepare them much better on our own. Their green beans are canned (or they look and taste that way at least). Their baked potatoes come with sour cream and nothing else, unless you choose the "loaded" option. Their salads are about as bare-bones as you can get, with dressings that are clearly the cheapest bottled kind. The worst part about all this is that both of our meals were still in the $45-50 range for two entrees. Most recently when I was here, I was craving a draft beer and asked what they had on tap. "Budweiser." was the response. I waited a few seconds to see if our waitress was just hoping I wanted that before listing the rest of the options. Nope. That was it. I think the term "hidden gem" implies a place is very good tasting and also looks... nice? So I wouldn't call this place a hidden gem per se, but I would call it HIDDEN. It's one of those places that looks shutdown from the outside, but inside the bar is full of regulars enjoying dinner. The menu is large but it's really pretty basic. You can choose a type of fish and how you'd like it cooked, and then it's served up with salad, rolls, potatoes, and vegetables. I had blackened snapper and it was very good--I would definitely recommend it. Super fresh tasting and well cooked. Also a big fan of their shrimp cocktail. Last night Thursday, I arrived with my party of 5 people, 3 adults and one 7 year old and 10 year old child at 4:30 pm, not a busy time. We were told that the wait is going to be at least 1 hour. I saw most of the tables empty. I pointed to the empty booths along the wall and stated that we could utilize those. Hostess grumbled something about the kitchen and refused us those seats stating that we have to wait for 5 person tables..I usually prefer to sit between my 2 grandchildren so as to assist them and they are not large.. I didn't think I would write a review as good as this one will be. A friend of mine recommended this restaurant so my wife and I thought we would give it a try. When I called to make a reservation I was told they don't take any and they wouldn't give an estimated wait time. When we got there I was told a 30 minute wait or my wife and I could sit at the bar. We sat at the bar and had to wave to get the bartender's attention. Then things turned positive. My wife ordered the fresh catfish and I ordered the fresh mahi mahi. Both of our meals came with Waldorf salad, a sort of sweet salad with chopped apples, celery, nuts and mayonnaise. It was really good and apparently a very traditional salad. The rolls that were served with our dishes were fresh. Our mains came with rice. My wife's catfish was a generous portion and was fried. I tried it and it was really fresh. My mahi mahi was grilled and it too was very fresh and really well prepared. Because we ate there on a Saturday night they also gave us cinnamon rolls. The reason for the 5 star review isn't just because of the quality of food --- old fashioned cooking done really well. The restaurant is a quirky, authentic find, which is nice in this time of restaurants that seem to following a trend. The decor is a heavy, low-ceilinged that is very heavy on dark wood, like something lifted from the 70's. The service is unapologetically authentic --- which means not much in the way of smiles but gets the job done. While the restaurant's name is Windward Passage the sign outside only said Windward. It was so dark from the outside it looked like the restaurant might be closed. But once we entered it was crowded and buzzy. Daughter treated for lunch, not telling where we were going. My being new to Columbus helped with the mystery. I was taken back in time after something akin to "knock three times". Into the old seafaring decor, dimmed lights, a comfortable booth, cheerful server and the scent of tasty dishes, I settled into the knowledge I was in for a treat. I was correct. An Upper Arlington icon, the place has been a favorite for decades. She had broiled sea scallops, perfectly done. I had a traditional cod fish sandwich, the batter fried nicely with the fish inside cooked and flaky. The bar, in its own dining area, was large and already busy with the afternoon regulars. Windward is 100% a diamond in the rough. If you weren't looking you would miss it. My girlfriend and I came in on a Friday night and got there right around 5 when they open. Thankfully we did because it was already very crowded. We were seated right away and had our orders taken. We started with some oysters on the half shell and while they were a little pricey for what I am used to, $2 an oyster, the size made up for it! These oysters were huge and delicious! From there we ordered our main course, I opted for shrimp and oysters and she went for the frog legs. With your meal you have the option of a soup or salad. She got the clam chowder and I went for a salad with their house made ranch, which was also delicious! They also serve house made rolls and cinnamon rolls with your meal! When the entrees came out I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the portion and again everything tasted great! The fried oysters were again huge and delicious while the frog legs had just what you were looking for. To end the meal, we went for our cinnamon roll and indulged in everything that it was. Well, some institutions are hard to explain I guess. We were astounded to learn this place had been in existence without our knowledge for years. Decades in fact, so we had to go. The ambiance is fantastic, old school seafood place. Our appetizers, peel and eat shrimp and oysters on the half shell were great. My Manhattan was just ok, I guess. They use those disgusting iridescent cherries and nothing else. It's not a good cocktail by any means. The wine was meh. But the the entrees were where everything fell apart. My companion had fried perch due to the yelp reviews. It was terrible. The kind of pale smooth coated fried fish you may have seen in a school cafeteria. Seriously. I got broiled scallops. The undersized crustaceans arrived unadorned in a dish with nothing else. Under seasoned, unplanned, un everything. Blech. Pointless. Never again. The staff is really nice. Windward Passage is a classic, all-American restaurant. It is really nothing extra special, but if you're looking for the same experience each time, and a consistently decent one, this is the place for you. They have seafood, obviously, but their other selections are very, very good. The prime rib is GREAT. The baby back ribs, available in numerous offerings, are great. I usually get whatever fresh fish is on special, and it is always very good. BJ is a good server, as well. It is rare to see these days, but she will take an entire order on a table of eight without writing down a thing. And if you visit more than once, she will remember your usual! All I can say is this place is absolutely amazing! You walk in the door of very friendly hostess greet you escort you to your table and then a wonderfully happy professional server takes your order. Then the food comes absolutely amazing tasty crab cakes. Best I've had in the state of Ohio. The sword fish is exceptional.I had an outstanding experience from the customer service to the food and I cannot wait to go again next week with friends for enjoyable dinner.
