Traveling to Grand Rapids, we stopped along the way for lunch at Tabor Hill Winery. We haven't been…read morethere in years. I forgot how good their restaurant is. We sat outside overlooking the vineyard. Molly was our server. She was friendly and engaging. Lunch was a walleye sandwich with chips for hubby and the fig & prosciutto flatbread for me. The walleye had a crispy crust coating the moist and tender fish. I took a bite of hub's sandwich and it was so good. My flatbread, though, was amazing. I'm all about a good crust and this one was perfection. So crispy, yet light with all air pockets in the crust. Of course, I love anything fig and this didn't disappoint. I ate 3 squares and took the rest with me. Of course being at the vineyard, we ordered a glass of wine. My husband had the albariño and I ordered the sauvignon blanc. I didn't care for the sauvignon blanc. When the manager came by, we raved about the food but I was honest about the wine. She gave me a taste of the chardonnay and she was right. It was good. I was happy she switched my wine. The negatives are the wasps are nuisances, and there were no traps to catch them. I was dodging them the entire meal. I guess it's hazard when dining al fresco. The other annoyance was the water glasses are small, and my water was never refilled and my glass sat empty even with Molly and the manager stopping by during the meal. Since the glass is small, they should leave a bottle of water at the table or make it a point to check and recheck the water glasses. This is a nice stop for lunch on the Michigan wine trail.

We didn't have to try and figure out directions and we could drink all the wine. We had 3 tastings and a lunch over the course of a few hours. Our Driver, Bill, was so sweet and shared so much information about grapes, wine, and local knowledge. He called that morning to check in and met us promptly at 10:45. The SUV was roomy and clean and he even had bottles of water on ice ready to go. Which we definitely needed after a few wine stops. Coming into it, I knew nothing about wine and I'm not even sure I knew Michigan had so many wineries and vineyards. Now I feel like I have a good amount of knowledge about wine and I figured out what I liked best. It was a very cool experience and my friend had a great bachelorette party.

People were hanging out, listening to the music, and enjoying their drinks. The staff were incredibly nice and the recommendations they gave us were spot on. I decided to try the craft canned cocktails, the flavors were Moscow Mule, Lemon Elderflower Vodka Soda, Blackberry Gin Gimlet, Strawberry Margarita, and Grapefruit Paloma. They all had something different going on, but my favorites were easily the Strawberry Margarita and the Blackberry Gin Gimlet. Those two were phenomenal. The Strawberry Margarita was fruity, bright, and super refreshing. It had that sweet strawberry flavor right away, followed by the citrusy tang of the margarita that kept it from tasting too sweet. The Blackberry Gin Gimlet had a deep, juicy fruit flavor with just the right amount of sweetness, while the gin brought in that herbal, slightly crisp flavor underneath. It had a little tartness at the end that made me want another sip almost immediately. They were the kind of drinks that felt perfect for sitting outside on a nice day.

Inside, the decor is open and bright, with natural light pouring in through large windows. The outdoor deck offers plenty of space, making it a great spot for groups, and the umbrellas provide solid shade on sunny days. Wine tasting is done standing at the bar, but you do get a discount on any bottles you purchase. The best deal is the "Build-A-Bag": buy 3 bottles and get a 4th free. My favorites were the 2019 Estate White Blend, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, and the 2023 Simply Rosé. On top of all that, the staff were friendly and helpful throughout the visit.

The grapes are labeled and it was fun to see the red grapes and the white grapes growing with stakes in the ground telling what they were. The wine-tasting building, itself, was architecturally spectacular, and we were very pleasantly surprised by the vaulted ceilings and modern design. The wines were very good. I found the unoaked Chardonnay to be really delicious, my favorite of the ones I tried. We were inside for the wine tasting but then we went outside to the lovely patio to chat and enjoy the view and sip on more wine. Since we went with empty stomachs, we ordered the cheese plate. It was a lovely afternoon at a lovely winery.

There were wine bottles everywhere, displays throughout the room, and just a lot to look at while you walked around. Our server was super nice and made the whole tasting really easy. We started with the fruit and cider flight, and that was actually a lot of fun. It was interesting trying them back to back and seeing how different each one tasted. But the one that really surprised me was the Key Lime Pie Martini. I was NOT expecting a dessert in drink form. The rum cream gave it that smooth, creamy sweetness, while the lime brought a bright, slightly tart kick that tasted just like key lime pie. The vanilla and cream made it silky and the graham cracker rim finished it off with that buttery sweetness. It honestly tasted like someone turned a slice of key lime pie into martini and somehow it worked perfectly. Every sip was sweet, creamy, tangy, and just a little refreshing. Definitely the drink I wasn't expecting to love as much as I did. For my first wine tasting experience, I'd say it was a pretty great introduction.
