Round Barn Tasting Room turned out to be a really fun stop. There was live music playing while we were there, which gave the place a relaxed but lively feel. People were hanging out, listening to the music, and enjoying their drinks. The staff were incredibly nice and the recommendations they gave us were spot on. I decided to try the craft canned cocktails, the flavors were Moscow Mule, Lemon Elderflower Vodka Soda, Blackberry Gin Gimlet, Strawberry Margarita, and Grapefruit Paloma. They all had something different going on, but my favorites were easily the Strawberry Margarita and the Blackberry Gin Gimlet. Those two were phenomenal. The Strawberry Margarita was fruity, bright, and super refreshing. It had that sweet strawberry flavor right away, followed by the citrusy tang of the margarita that kept it from tasting too sweet. The Blackberry Gin Gimlet had a deep, juicy fruit flavor with just the right amount of sweetness, while the gin brought in that herbal, slightly crisp flavor underneath. It had a little tartness at the end that made me want another sip almost immediately. They were the kind of drinks that felt perfect for sitting outside on a nice day. read more

Started off our day of wine tasting at Round Barn in Union Pier. This location intrigued me due to the offering of $12 (6) tasting options for wine, beer, or spirits (spirit tasting max of 2). The wines offered were from all sister locations: round barn, free run, tabor hill. This price was a great value in comparison to a lot of the other wineries in the area! The inside was very clean but stripped down. There was no real decor outside of the building architecture and merchandise. Staff was very friendly and was hustling to accommodate all parties there. No real explanation of wine nor beer were given when tasting and all glasses were placed in a muffin tin. While this was a great idea for staff, it definitely took away from the elegance one associated to wine tasting. Our group felt all wines and beer were average. read more

We came here right after leaving St. Julien next door, and it's like Night/Day! The atmosphere and setup was less 'fancy' but I actually liked their wines better. Instead of wine glasses on a board, we got plastic cups in a cupcake tin! I admit it's clever and a good way to recycle. Most of the action was outside, with cornhole games and picnic benches with umbrellas, but we opted to sit in a large booth inside. I admit it's a good idea to have space and seating indoors, in case of rain or cold. We picked out 6 wines from a list ($12) and were given a 'map' of what was what. Instead of snacks, the store nearby sold clothes and candles, and other liquor. There was definitely less hovering, more of a DIY tasting about the place. I liked the attention of St Julien (which is more expensive)but the wine at Round Barn was tastier. Maybe next time I'll go in reverse, pick the 'no-frills' place, then the fancy place for tastings. read more

We had a fantastic time here. Katie waited on us and she was extremely knowledgeable. She shared with us she was in school for wine. We didn't know that was an option for a science degree. It was a great conversation. The inside of the winery was clean and there was a lot of seating. They also had live music until 7 PM this Saturday that we arrived. There was places outside to sit as well. The winery was kid friendly, and I was able to bring my young daughter in with our family. I've been to Round Barn a few times over the last few years and I've always had a good time. I've especially enjoyed the variety that you can find here: beer, wines, spirits, cute apparel and I even saw candles on this last visit on Sun. We had a very engaged young lady who helped give us background on the different wines and spirits for our tastings - and they also serve slushies, by the way which I was tempted to try! Not part of the tasting though but I'm sure the pricing wouldn't have been bad for a serving. I tasted a variety of whites, reds, and roses; however purchased the Blueberry Franc (very good but 19% alcohol) and the Sparkling Demi-Sec. The combo together was very good. Only change is I feel they should look having snacks or at least selling them. Those oyster crackers worked if you have nothing else.. but uh uh. Highly recommend visiting the Round Barn. read more

A friend and I took the day to drive to Michigan for lunch and wine tasting. It was our afternoon EXPLORATION to relax and have a good time. We stopped off at Round Barn. I was totally excited to have my first experience with a winery. In my mind. I was traveling to California-and my tastebuds were to be MIND BLOWN with all the delicious flavors from fruits, berries, and the like. Well sure, I know Michigan is not Cali. And the experience probably not even close. But, I love wine and I was excited to be there! We walked in. It was fairly empty. Wine bottles on shelving filled the place. There was emptiness of sound. I thought to myself "why not have some sort of music playing in here?" Beats listening to NOTHING. The dead silence made it awkward. We let the gentleman know we were there for a tasting. He told us the cost. Pulled out 3 menus from which we were to choose 6 wines/beer/ 2 spirits from 6 options. We chose an assortment of wine. It was poured. It was placed in "muffin tins" to hold the glasses. There was no explanation of flavors, tastes, nothing(besides what was on the menus). I did ask what was a favorite of his/others in my selecting. I wanted to be aware of what I was going to partake in. Unfortunately he wasn't helpful in this. So we blindly selected most of the 6 wines. We went outside. We sipped. Most we didnt enjoy. But one for sure I did!! Black walnut Cream! Now if you ever get a chance to taste this! Whew!! It would pair lovely with coffee or over ice. And it has an alcohol volume of 13.5%. Milky yummy! Although no one was rude or mean. My experience here was nothing I thought it would be. There was nothing to be desired here. If you just wanted to taste a few wines without ANY experience besides sitting outside drinking it, then, please..... go enjoy. I just wished the staff talked about what we were going to do. Talked about the exeprience of the flavors. I wished there was some sort of insight to what we were paying money to participate in. There was not structure to this "wine tasting". It just "was". I was invited to a ladies midday outing and this place was chosen. I did not know what to expect so I entered with low expectations. It was a group of four of us. When we entered we stood around not knowing what to expect. No one said anything to us so we walked to the bar area. The person working assisted us and answered any questions that we had. I asked for the sweet wine flight. We were served six wines. I asked for black walnut cream, moscato, edel doux, weekend red, farm market cranberry, and Demi red. We were served oyster crackers and the wine flights. I'm not a wine drinker so I chose what sounds familiar and yummy. I do know that I am not a dessert wine person but we all decided to try something out of our comfort zone. My cousin is a wine connoisseur and loved the wines that she tried. First stop on our wine tour of lower Michigan! We came in on a Friday evening and the place was pretty empty inside. Our service at the wine counter was really great, the bartender as very knowledge and gave us good suggestions. My husband and I split a wine flight and was able to add in a bourbon sample with the wine flight. They have outdoor seating and seem very COVID friendly. I'd stop in again. read more

Loved this place. Their staff are extremely friendly and fun, and the service is excellent. The wide range of beverages they offer are all pretty good. I was surprised to see that they really do have everything- beer, spirits, slushies, cider, and a large range of wine. This is a MUCH better tasting experience than their next door neighbor. The value for the money is fantastic, and the drinks are truly pleasant and well made. The outdoor space is fine (not great), but the indoor space is really nice, and you can tell they are trying hard. I wish they would make masks required indoors. Round Barn Winery was the 3rd stop on the tour. Very Beautiful on the outside. But the inside was crazy packed with people besides us. Once we entered we had to go over to a small area where we had to show our I.D's and than we were giving a nice glass for the tasting. There was this nice round bar centered in the middle where you stand around and enjoy your 5 wine tasting. If only, you could squeeze in and get a spot. I was a little disappointed. I just felt like if the owner knew that a tour was schedule on a specific date and time. They would section off a space for the tour. Nope. It didn't work out that way. It was very hard for us to squeeze in between the other customers. The servers were just going from person to person pouring wine. No time to get knowledge of the wine. Poor Set Up Delivery. I couldn't really enjoy the wine or atmosphere. I was able to meet two former Chicagoans who had moved to Michigan. It was a pleasure meeting some friendly people. They noticed how I was struggling to squeeze in between others to get my wine. So, they were so kind to invite me and Latrice over to stand in between them. I like Round Barn. The location is convenient and clean. The service is hit or miss, but the wine is delicious.

There's a ton to try here, and they've made it really easy to order your flight and take the whole thing outside by using mini muffin pans to hold six tasting cups. You can mix and match their beers, spirits, and wines (including both Round Barn's own line of Michigan grown wines as well as some other wineries that have been incorporated into their portfolio, most notably Tabor Hill, whose Classic Demi Sec has always seemed like that Goldilocks just- right blend of sweet but not too sweet and drinkable and affordable) as well as any wine slushy options. #frozeallday The prices for their tastings have definitely creeped up through the years (and were $12 for six on our most recent visit) like so many regional wineries. We loved that we could take our tasting outside and enjoy enjoy sipping our selections at one of their picnic tables while hanging out with their dogs. St. Julian has also moved in next door And offers a similarly wide range of spirits and wines and wines and those relatively entrelatively entry level prices. Our palates have outgrown much of what St. Julian has to offer but we still very much enjoy our visits to Round Barn. We highly recommend the porter beer, Black Walnut Cream (it's amazing in coffee or in a modified White Russian), and I'm a sucker for the froze! My boyfriend and I came here as part of a date. A bunch of people have said in other reviews that they were left to their own devices once they got into the tasting room but we had the exact opposite experience - as soon as we came in, the staff were super attentive and gave us a really good run down of each of the things we chose to taste. I was basically just pointing at things on the menu because I have the refined spirits palate of a high school freshman but the lady who was helping us made some really good recommendations. I loved everything that I tried (I had a mix of wine and spirits and my boyfriend has all three - wine, beer, liquor). We went back inside to shop a little and the staff were very helpful again. It's a very cute spot. It was a little awkward that they weren't playing music or anything inside. read more

Apparently they don't allow dogs anywhere, not even at the outdoor restaurants. They were so nice they let us bring her in. They really made our day. This was 2 years ago. Today I went back to pick up my wine order and they were just as nice. I don't understand all the negative reviews. Why can't you go to both? We came here during our first trip since the apocalypse started, and it was a really pleasant little spot. I can imagine that it gets packed and extremely noisy. There was no one in here when we went and we got the full rundown from the dude, who was very nice. They have liquor, liqueur, wine, and carbonated alcoholic beverages, to boot, including beer and non-beer. This is for the Round Barn Location on the wine trail (they don't seem to have another yelp page for that space). I have always loved Round Barn- have been coming for seven years and it's always been my favorite winery on the wine trail. Still a great place, but to me, it feels it's more about "see and be seen". Honestly, if I wanted a cover charge and to make it more about making an outfit than just hanging out, I would stay in Chicago. The wine is good and the spirits (the bourbon and the whiskey)- are amazing! Also, and this has nothing to do with the review more of an aesthetic thing- this place is my favorite space/vineyard on the trail. I think that the barn makes the vineyard look perfect. However, they added a white tent in front of it and it makes space look smaller and not like a vineyard but more like the entrance to the county fair. read more

I've been sampling, buying, and drinking Round Barn and Free Run wines, as well as Tabor Hill (which they recently acquired), for many years. A tasting experience yesterday seemed to confirm what I had been suspecting: the family that runs these businesses is focused too much on growth, marketing, merch, branching out into beer and spirits, fancy logos and labeling, and generally being very corporate, and too little on the quality of their wines. The quality of the wines has declined, while the prices have increased. And -- oddly for a corporation that seems so obsessed with marketing -- there is no apparent differentiation among the Round Barn, Free Run, and Tabor Hill brands. Round Barn used to make a fantastic Riesling; now they don't. Their "Vineyard Tears" was once superb; it has become thin and indistinct. Both Free Run and Tabor Hill have a Gewurztraminer. (Actually Free Run has two; their Dry Gewurztraminer was the best and most expressive of the whites I tasted yesterday.) The Round Barn Chardonnay was mediocre, with an unpleasant bouquet. Tabor Hill Cabernet Franc has always been decent and one of the better Michigan reds, and it's still a pleasant, dry table wine, but no one who knows anything about wine and has access to a decent liquor store should pay $28 for it. Twelve dollars to taste six wines also seems high, though the pours are a decent size. The wildly varying Michigan weather and harsh winters make it difficult to sustain consistent quality. But a corporation with resources this big should be able to figure it out. It's unclear how much of their juice is locally grown versus sourced from elsewhere, but they seem to make few if any claims about their juice being local. (Tabor Hill used to label many of their wines as "Lake Michigan Shore appellation.") They appear to have declining interest in the traditional French Hybrid grape varieties (e.g. Vidal) which are better-adapted to Midwestern growing conditions, focusing instead on the European varietals (Chardonnay, etc.) they assume everyone recognizes and wants. I only tasted five wines, so perhaps a more comprehensive tasting of the current offerings would give me a better opinion. But based on this experience, I'm sorry to say that the Moersch Hospitality Group seems to be catering to tourists who are impressed by slick, upscale-appearing labels and prices (which are generally too ambitious for the quality of the wine), but who don't really know much about interesting, high-quality wine. Michigan wines have a nice tradition, and it's disappointing to see size and corporatization replacing craft. Update: At a grocery store down the street for $17, I just bought the same Tabor Hill Cab Franc they're selling at the tasting room for $28! read more

Writing my review for the Union Pier location. We came here because it was right next to St. Julian Winery, and I wanted to try the beer. Pros: The beer that I tried was excellent. Each of the 6 beers I tried I would think about having a full glass or buying a six pack. I was a fan. There was also a sitting area. Cons: There's something about this company and having sassy employees that look like they don't want to be there. This was a better time than the other location, but I could sense that she did not want to be there, and didn't really make conversation with us. They also only have six beers to try at this location (or both of them?). Beer enthusiasts might want to try other places especially if they like darker heavier beers. I would not recommend a wine tasting because they are small pours and they taste very commercialized like I'm just drinking yellowtail or barefoot. read more

Belly up to the bar that's in the middle of the room and pay $5 for 5 tokens. The wine menu ranges from sweet sweet fruit wines, to fuller bodied Cabs or Syrah, to sparkling whites. Be prepared to feel like you stepped into the Golden Girls with the occasional bachelorette party, here. But the atmosphere is welcoming. I liked checking out the wine bottles along the wall, for a fuller description of what's offered. But the bar maiden was very helpful, too. Most wines are just 1 token. They don't do a hard sell on buying bottles, but I ended up taking home a bottle of the Balaton Cherry wine- which featured a cherry grown in the Balaton region of Hungary. It's a nice spicy cherry wine that will be perfect for fall. I'd definitely return to Round Barn. read more

This was my experience here.. 1- upon entry was not welcoming at all. 2-price $12.00 for 5 samples not worth it when you can pay 5 dollars at the winery next door and get the same amount of samples. 3- wine is not that great, meh tasted like cheap wine not one I liked. 4-staff is not friendly at all, they make you feel rushed and not like you're enjoying yourself, more like drink and get the heck out, they rush your drinks so you leave sooner and please note this place is sooo dead no people at all barely any since everyone's favorite is the winery next door. I love that I can get good wine and beer at the Round Barn. Right off the highway, this tasting room location is much more convenient than hauling out to Baroda. Though I like that setting more, this one fits the bill perfectly. Up for a tasting? Need to buy a few bottles? Want to refill the growler? I have visited this place twice...the first time just to buy some wine, and today - to do a tasting. The tasting is $8 and you get to keep the glass :) You can pick 5 wines and/or booze made by Round Barn Winery. With the tasting, you get a token for $5 off the purchase of 3 bottles. I ended up buying 3 bottles and paid roughly $10 per bottle with the discount. The location is great, if you're from out of town...the place is literally right off the expressway! read more

I had to say something twice before being able to do enjoy my tasting. The patio out back there was a huge curb to get to seating or had to travel through muddy grass to get to a picnic table. There was only one booth that was level enough for me to transfer other than that there was no accessible seating and at that I had to make you kick out a party that was sitting there which made me feel awful because I hate being that person in a wheelchair that has to do that to people. Yes the person behind the bar said the lower bar part was inconvenient for the workers which again made me feel like being disabled is an inconvenience for you guys there. Super excited to come out and try a new tasting. We came from out of town and didn't know the requirements for Covid rules. The sign said "mask requirement for inside expect for tasting". We got our our wines and sat outside. The man who helped us in the beginning was super helpful and pleasant. After our tasting we went in to pay and this women (who worked there) was rude and the most disrespectful women I've met. She threaten to call the cops on us for not wearing a mask. We would have been fine walking to the car to grab them but she instead she threatened us. She then continued and forced us to check out leave. Never going back. We were gonna buy a bunch of bottles but was forced out. We were forced out before our "$500 fine"! read more

Went to three wineries in the area over the memorial day weekend. The was our last stop and the best. Tastings were being served in the round barn. (No beer tasting that weekend.) We tasted both the wine and the liquor. As my husband is somewhat a oenophile, we preferred the liquor. (Michigan not the wine making capitol of the world) In particular we like the vodka. They had a tasting of a nice fruity martini. Yum! As is common you pay for the tasting and it comes with the glass. I really like the stemless wine glasses they use. When we first went into the round barn we walked around the first floor and the circular tasting bar that was there. We found a place and did our tasting on the first floor. Our server was very friendly and what questions she couldn't answer she asked others more knowledgeable for the right ones. Really appreciate not getting misinformation! On the way out we noticed stairs on either side of the exit. We took a walk up the stairs and whoa, huge vaulted ceiling and large tasting room! So cool up there. Don't miss it! read more
