I'm not sure if this is the original, or the second rendition of our favorite ice cream spot in Ellensburg, but either way, they are doing things right! As with the other location, which is interestingly located about a mile down the street, they serve up tons of interesting, yet still familiar flavors. Each time we go in, we all end up debating over half a dozen flavors or so, but never leave wishing we had gotten something else. They have something like 24 flavors available, most of which incorporate familiar ingredients, while some or on the more interesting side. Again, you're not going to go wrong with anything. They have plenty of caffeinated options as well, as they've got a solid espresso and coffee shop located in the hallowed halls of this ice cream parlor. The service is always fast and pleasant, and a la bask in Robbins, you can sample! I'm rating only the ice cream; I've never been to one of their stores. The ice cream is sold in Haggens grocery stores. It finally went on sale, dropping below $6 a pint, so I decided to try it. I picked up a pint of "Vickie Berry." I'm an ice cream addict. I can live blissfully on three meals a day of the stuff. I've tasted every premium, small-batch creamery ice cream there is in WA. This is the only ice cream I've ever bought that I have no interest in finishing. I've thrown out the pint after eating maybe three ounces of it. Where it should be creamy, it's gummy and gluey. There's a powerful lot of guar gum, HFCS, and carrageenan in this supposedly "homemade" ice cream. Worst of all, this "huckleberry" ice cream contains no huckleberry. Go ahead; look at the label. No huckleberry...in "huckleberry" ice cream that normally retails for $6 a pint. It's flavored with blueberry, and even that is weak enough that it doesn't mask the rubbery, gummy, taffy-like texture of the ice cream. The "huckleberry" flavor is made from, according to the label, "water, alcohol, sugar, citric acid, red and blue food coloring." No huckleberry. This is just bad ice cream. That's all there is to it. Homemade, premium ice cream shouldn't be loaded with gums, stabilizers, and "substitute" flavorings. At this price point, "huckleberry" ice cream should contain actual huckleberry, and plenty of it. read more

Old school ice cream parlor! Lots of room inside to sit down and enjoy your ice cream, sundae, milkshake. Maybe not so old school as they serve coffee too with the inevitable drive through (drive throughs are a must in PNW). We were confused when we first saw the hours they were open until we noticed that they sold coffee as well. My SO ordered the coffee and the kids had ice cream (of course). I wouldn't go for the coffee personally. It wasn't bad, but not great either. Worth it to snap a picture of him holding a pink lidded cup though. Haha. The ice cream on the other hand is exceptional. Very smooth and creamy with great flavors. I persuaded my little girl to get the pumpkin (one of my favorites). It wasn't a huge effort as she was more than willing to try it. My son ordered the grasshopper type flavor. Both ice cream flavors were excellent. The pumpkin was more than special, but that would be my personal preference. This location is attached to a really cute Hallmark like store. Both sides had historical items of interest displayed. A great stop. read more

Winegar's deserves a gold star for serving amazing ice cream AND shipping my lost pair of glasses that I left on the counter in the store. Ellensburg is about 2 or so hours away from me. I visited on Saturday and made the same trip home that night. I was exhausted. When I got home, sat down on the couch, went into my purse and realized I didn't have my glasses - I freaked! I had my contacts in but my doctor told me I wasn't supposed to leave them in for more than 8 hours a day. Luckily, Winegar's to the rescue. When I called, they shipped them back to me the next day and they came within a couple of days. I appreciated the kindness from their staff and will always return when I'm in the area. read more

Not sure how I stumbled upon this place, I suppose it just looked good from the car, driving back to Seattle from a road trip. I've been there a couple times now, and plan stops when in the area - the ice cream is excellent and priced alright too. I hope someday they expand west of the Cascades, because these guys are better than Molly Moon's, a wildly successful chain that has little competition in Seattle. In particular I like the chocolate ice cream - it's probably a very old recipe, and as such it has balance to it - sweet, creamy, and a little bitter. New, hipster ice cream joints like to make a pissing contest out of chocolate ice cream, where the darkest dark can never be dark enough. It's the same garbage when a brewer can't put enough hops in the beer, or when the party host can't put enough capsaicin in the buffalo wings. The darkest, bitterest, most metal chocolate ice cream might be good on a tasting spoon, but you won't want to eat more than a few bites. At Winegar's, you'll enjoy every last bite of the chocolate ice cream, and I salute that. read more

The carmel macchiato was not bad, but by no ways one of the best out there. The coffee had a wonderful taste, but the drink had no vanilla taste to it, which is a part of the recipe. In addition, they use hot carmel sauce (like for hot fudge sundaes) in a cold drink, which makes it very thick to drink and just weird. The staff seemed a bit annoyed to provide service, like you were interrupting them. I had to ask for my drink to be corrected (light ice) before it was finished being made and there was some issues at checkout with the cashier not knowing how to use Square (their payment system for credit cards). The overall feeling of the service was poor, but the drink was acceptable. Overall though if I am in Ellensburg again and in need of coffee, you can rest assured though Winegar's will not be a place I stop. read more

A metropolitan-quality coffeeshop in a small town, about 2-blocks east of the university. The interior is nicely decorated with about 15 large and small tables in the main room and a few sofas in back. Winegar's offers legitimate coffee options, all the syrups you would ever need for your favorite Italian soda, and a selection of refrigerated drinks in a set of floor-to-ceiling coolers behind the counter. Service is a little slow, but the kids behind the counter are friendly and work hard. The availability of a drive-thru is a nice surprise. I've often noticed folks using it and moving through at a good pace. However, the real draw is the ice cream, which does indeed have the texture and flavor of properly homemade ice cream. There are two large freezers with about 12-flavors a piece. The names are meant to be clever and often will not help you make a decision, so I recommend checking out their website in advance to see what goes into each. Flavors are unique, interesting, and taste great. Taster-spoons are offered liberally so you should try a few before buying. My personal favorite is the "Sundae Richelle" - vanilla with a caramel swirl and chocolate-covered almond pieces. Presentation matters to them. You have four choices of cone alone. My favorite is a "waffle bowl", which they put in a paper-bowl before filling it up to help avoid spills. It's sweet and holds the ice cream well. There are also about a dozen fun toppings offered for sundaes - including unique ones like Jelly Bellys. My one turn off was this widely advertised "club" for mixing cold drink flavors. Basically you get a card and order a different mix of syrups on every visit until you get to 101... yeah, that's right, 101. A t-shirt, mug, photo-on-the-wall (ironically located next to the bathroom) and $1.00 off future drinks is waiting at the finish line. Gives me the willies!!, but they didn't even mention it while I was there, so I'll leave it to the wreckless and taste-deprived kids to destroy their taste buds for bragging rights. ; ) All-in-all, a fantastic gem in Ellensburg and well worth the visit. read more

No joke, this is probably one of the best ice creams I've ever had. Very thick and creamy and excellent flavors. This ice cream is just awesome, that's the only way to describe it. This review is for their "pints" that I've been buying at my local Metropolitan Market (in the Seattle area). If their packaged ice cream is this good I could only imagine how good it is when it's fresh. Yes it's a bit on the pricier side but not out of line with other "premium pint" offerings, and I'd much rather spend a bit extra to support a local WA business than some watered down corporate brand. USUALLY i would give 5 stars because they have great coffee but today i had my first horrible experience at Winegars. To be fair, they were really busy and I can understand how that can be frustrating. My sister and I came in through the drive thru around 7:30am ordering for both of us & a friend, so we got a total of 3 drinks and 2 breakfast items. When we told the cashier (Samaria? Samira?) that we had two separate orders, she looked out the window at the rest of the line behind us, glared at us, and said "Ok." We proceeded to order and while we were ordering, she was talking with her coworker about how our order made her want to "kermit" (play of words on "commit") and "cry." She was telling her coworker "There's gonna be 3 blendeds. Try not to cry." For reference, we ordered 2 blended mochas & an extremebull. I was genuinely baffled and felt so guilty. read more

This place is a historic fixture in Ellensburg. When I first visited it, it was still located at the family dairy where calves would hang over the fence hoping for a lick of your ice cream. It's no longer at the dairy but it's still the family business and the same farm-to-cone ice cream quality is still there. The flavors are all named for family members. And it's a big family! They have real malted milk powder for their malts, and for their specialty sundae, the Dusty Road, a coffee ice cream hot fudge sundae covered over in malt powder. But here's the locals-only secret -- that malt powder is amazing in a latte. Dare ya to find another place in the country where you can get a malted milk latte! Also, consistently professional and friendly service. The employees seem to enjoy their jobs and both locations have a laid back, "welcome home" vibe. read more

A lot of people have commented on the high prices here but I have found them to be very reasonably priced. The ice cream is THE BOMB, cookies are great too, and if you have a rewards card you get awesome coupons. The staff is nice and helpful, one girl there is super annoying but thats not really a legitimate complaint. Only knocked one star off because their mochas aren't very good. Tastes kinda like drip coffee with milk and chocolate. But they're inexpensive enough that it doesn't bother me much. They're also open late too!:) read more

I wanted to go to a locally owned coffee shop and everyone I asked told me to come here. So glad I did! Probably one of the best lattes I've ever had. I think they make their own milk, so maybe that's the secret, but whatever it is, they are doing it right. They also have ice cream, so it's not the typical coffee shop. It's a small place, but larger than other coffee houses I've been to. They have about 5 - 6 tables (with plenty of chairs) and a quieter place in the back with a love seat and two chairs. Friendly service and lots of yummy looking scones and muffins. They also have a drive-thru, which is convenient. Next time I'm working in town, I will definitely come back.
