The Winfield serves a mean fish fry! The piece of fish is HUGE and when I reheated my leftovers in the oven it got nice and crispy again. The fish has the perfect amount of breading on it and it stayed crispy throughout the entire meal, unlike many fish fries that I've had. Get the truffle fries- the seasoning on them was excellent and they were perfectly cooked! The coleslaw was just ok and the homemade tartar sauce hit the spot. We also ordered calamari for an app and it was cooked perfectly- nice and crispy with light breading. Their fryer game is on point! A newbie bartender made my mojitos and they were a little weak(his first time making one), but I forgave him because he was a nice, friendly guy. This is my go-to place in the North Winton neighborhood because the food is always good. I went for dinner tonight (a Friday) at around 630 and we had a wait time of 30 mins. Not too bad, and the time quoted was just about how long we actually had to wait. The bar area is big enough that you can hang out there while you wait, or there are benches outside for days when the weather is nice. I ordered the arancini appetizer and Winfield Signature Burger. The arancini are big and come with three to the plate. They were nice and cheesy and also had peas inside (not noted on the menu, but worth pointing out since I'm never sure if arancini at any place will have them or not). All three are super filling and could definitely be ordered as an entree. The Winfield Signature Burger was a big 8 oz patty. I prefer a thinner burger, but I knew the size when I ordered so this wasn't a problem. I would have preferred more onion crunchies and aioli to go with the large patty. Overall though this had good flavor and was very filling. The fries as a side were nice and crispy, too. The service tonight was friendly but kind of slow. It was a busy night, but I felt like we had to wait just a little bit too long in between placing our orders, getting the food, and getting the check. That being said, our server was super friendly so it didn't bother me too much. But I've noticed slow service is kind of a regular thing here, so if you're in a hurry you may want to take that into consideration. read more

As a Black man, I have never had one questionable experience of eating in or grabbing take out from the Winfield Grill. I am sensitive to stares by others and have been sensitive for as long as I can remember. I have never gotten "those stares" in this restaurant. My family has always been made to feel welcomed and service is consistently excellent. The food is also superb. I believe when you eat out, you should be served dishes that you could not make on your own. We get that every time we choose Winfield. The seafood bisque? OMG! Enough said. I have been to the Winfield a lot through the years. Yesterday I went in there to sit at the bar with a friend and get appetizers and drinks. When we arrived, the chairs at the bar were in pairs and spaced 6 feet apart. I would have even sat at the bar if it didn't look this way. My friend and I ended up leaving sooner than planned because covid rules were not being enforced and we felt very nervous and uncomfortable. As people came in, they started taking bar stools from high top tables and bringing them over to the bar because the bartender told them it was ok. We both ended up having people about 2 feet away from us. I had a plexiglass glass barrier between me and the other person, it my friend did not. Then there was a woman just standing and talking to a patron very close behind me. Across the bar there were about 5 patrons all put next to each other who didn't appear to know one another, but I guess they were ok with it. At one point, the kitchen door swung open and there was a guy standing in there talking with his mask down around his chin. I can tell you that if I go back any time soon, I will sit in a booth, but after what I saw, I will likely go somewhere else. It was like they didn't care to follow the rules at all. The bartender just wanted her tips at whatever cost. I can go across the street to Lucky's instead. read more

Winfield Grill - mind you I'm usually found dining at an Authentic Asian Restaurant as most of my reviews are catered around that type of cuisine. I wanted something different so I ventured up to The Winfield Grill for dinner with my wife. I made reservations for 6:30pm and we arrived 10 minutes early and was seated promptly. The ambiance was very warm and cozy our Hostess was Melissa and she was spot on. She was full of energy and delightful. My wife ordered The Seafood Bisque, Clams Casino, and a Garden Salad. I ordered the Buffalo Bites with Dyno Sauce and a bowl of Seafood Bisque. Not to confuse you the reader, the pictures are from the day previous at lunch, of which I ordered the Buffalo Bites and a Crock of French Onion Soup. Everything was very tasty, the Angry Orchard Crisp Apple Hard Cider was Chilled to Perfection off the Tap. The Dyno Sauce was very tasty and Spicy which kept calling me back. I wasn't able to eat all of my dinner due to the consistency of the Seafood Bisque which was a hearty meal in itself. The Winfield Grill has a very nice menu for everyone's fare. I have lived in North Winton Village for years, which means that I've been to the Winfield Grill a ton of times. I wouldn't call it a favorite, but it's a consistent place to bring visitors and family where I know that everyone will be comfortable and find something they enjoy eating. The food has always been very good, and I've never really had anything there I didn't like. They have a lot of American basics including a classic Fish Fry, which I crave on occasion. There's nothing that specifically stands out as a specialty of the house or something they do differently than other places. The bar gets shockingly busy later in the evening on the weekend, but has a good selection and several draft lines. My most recent visit was for drinks with co-workers, some of whom don't drink. It was nice to have options like fresh coffee on offer for these folks. The Winfield is always a solid choice and can suit larger groups easily with some larger booths and tables. read more

I was pleasantly surprised with my dining experience at Winfield! I've been here once for drinks at the bar and didn't think twice about coming back. I'm turned off by places where the bars are jam packed and I have to squeeze my way through crowds where my nose is at armpit level. Ah, the Life of Shorties. I'll tell my tales some other time. First, parking can be nuts. They have a parking lot but it is typically full, as well as street parking. My suggestion, go when it's not prime time whenever that is. We came on a weekday and it was busy, but luckily found a spot in the lot. Our mission was to try the signature wings as well as get some dinner so we sat in the dining area. The ambiance feels romantic, but not the spot to have a quiet conversation to get to know someone with the bar adjacent to the room. The server and server-in-training were outgoing, friendly, and attentive. They brought out bread with garlic herb flavored butter as we waited. Yum! For starters, we ordered the Sicilian calamari which was softly battered, flaky and tender. The batter still tasted fresh even for a late night dinner. It was topped with banana peppers, kalamata olives, and grape tomatoes in a light wine based tomato sauce. A little salty with the banana peppers and parts can get soggy with all of the juices from the toppings, however overall it was good. I really enjoyed the dash of fresh parsley or cilantro which added a refreshing herb flavor to it. I ordered the Winfield reuben with sweet potato fries. The sammie was light on sauerkraut and the thick roasted turkey was tender and not dry for turkey. The thousand island dressing on the side included diced pickles which added flavor. I liked the texture of the fries but there didn't seem to be any seasoning other than salt. A sprinkle of brown sugar would be a nice touch. Ah, the signature wings. The wings are a good size and they are crispy, juicy, and tender which I prefer over dry and extra crispy wings. The sauce is very tasty; sweet with a slight kick. It reminds me of boss sauce and country sweet. It's excellent with the creamy light blue cheese. Just writing about it makes me crave it! read more

It is rare when we go to the same restaurant twice in a couple of months but to go two weeks in a row is highly unusual. Last week we went to the Winfield for burgers on a busy Friday night and had a typical good experience but last night it was really poor and I need to call it out. Perhaps it was just a bad night. Not only did we have to wait close to 45 minutes for our entrees after placing the order (and multiple inquires to the waitress) but the fries were cold with our fish fries. Since the service was so slow and we had plans we did not send back the fries. Also the vegetables with one of the entrees was super garlicy and I love garlic but whoa too much. It seemed to be a typical busy Friday night so not sure what was up with the kitchen.... And we really wanted this place to be our neighborhood go-to spot... read more

What I thought was suppose to be a great Birthday dinner turned into one of the worse experiences of my life. We ordered food and just about everything came back wrong. Medium rare was well done, seafood bisque was cold, chicken French was cold, and 2nd chicken French was terrible. We didn't complain. Instead, we just asked to have them warmed up. So the Manager comes out, after 45 minutes mind you, and says, verbatim, "I took the steaks off, but don't think I'm doing this everytime!" I love the Winfield for their amazing food and atmosphere, but for as long as I've been going there, the service has been horribly disorganized and disappointing. I continue to go back because I constantly crave the buffalo bites, but I just have to know that even if I'm calling to get take out it's going to be awful. My latest qualm is that now that they're back open, their hours are listed incorrectly everywhere. On Yelp and on their website. I saw they were back open, went to order takeout online, which it said wasn't taking online orders, so I called and no one answered, yet they said they were open online, and finally drove there to find out they were actually closed. I get it, if your hours changed, they changed, but I searched the website and Instagram to see if they posted ANYTHING about changing hours when they reopened and found nothing. I'll order take out because, again, I love their food, but they need to address the issue of slow (or sometimes non-existent) service. read more

I'm currently beginning a fish fry tour and this was my first stop. Winfield's fish fry is wonderful! If I'm correct, they won for best fish fry in Rochester. They do have quite a delicious fish fry and the other places I visit have something to live up to. It was beer battered and large and comes with two sides. The sides are usually french fries and coleslaw but you can substitute. My mom got the fries and found them crispy and delicious. I ordered the asparagus and they seemed blanched with a little olive oil. Fine but nothing to write home about. The coleslaw tasted homemade and so did the tartar sauce. So delicious! Since Covid many of our favorite lunch spots are not open. We decided to try the Winfield. We had frequented it when we worked in the city, but stopped when we relocated. Their menu isn't extensive anymore, which is fine...just do things right. I WAS going to order wings...but at $18 for an order...no way. My next choice was the cajun burger, but again $17 for a burger??? We settled on caeser salads. I got it with grilled chicken and my hubby did plain but got a crock of french onion soup. He said the soup was just OK...it looked pretty greasy. The caeser salads came in those deceiving bowls...wide but very shallow. My chicken breast was dried out... Drinks were good. There was an article in the D&C recently on the 27 best fish fries in Rochester. They rated Mr. Dominic's at the Lake #1 and Winfield #2. Last week we went to Mr Dominic's. While it was good, I wasn't compelled, nor did I think to Yelp about it. Tonight, we went to Winfield Grill for a fish fry. I can tell you it blew the #1 seed out of the water. The fish was crispy and delicious from start to finish. The tater sauce was the perfect condiment and plenty of it. My sides were truffle fries and coleslaw. The truffle fries were outstanding. The coleslaw was just so so. Admittedly, I'm a bit a a coleslaw snob but I think they can do a better job on their slaw. Nonetheless, YELP worthy! Unfortunately, I was just about done with my dinner before I thought about taking a picture but I can tell you my plate was pictures perfect. I did ask the name of our sever to give her a shout out because she was fantastic but after a few beers her name now escapes me. So far, Winfield Grill has the best fish fry in Rochester!! We came here for dinner with a large group of 9, and they were very accommodating in fitting us all in at a large table. We did however get seated late since the table wasn't ready at our arrival but we just hung out in the bar area and they gave us a free appetizer once we were seated. We got nachos to share at the table and they were really good. Loaded with lots of toppings and we also added chicken to it. I got the pita looking good sandwhich with grilled chicken, cheddar, Cajun mayo, Thousand Island, lettuce, tomato, and bacon and it was really good! All of their sandwiches are fantastic and the mid specialty burgers are equally delicious. Quick lunch as I say good bye to everyone and head back to Oklahoma and saw this neat looking place. The Winfield Grill has done an excellent job utilizing their building, making it inviting yet unique. We were immediately greeted by Emily who also turned out to be a server. By far the best server I have seen in my visit to Rochester. Very friendly and extremely friendly...very helpful in answering Andra's "vegetarian" questions. Veggie burger for Andra with grilled mushrooms and house made chips. Good not great, really liked the mushroom and scallion topping but the burger was a bit dry. Being the meat eater I had a traditional burger with Swiss. Really great, moist with perfect seasoning and a bun that wrapped it all together. I had chips and salsa as my side and was pleasantly surprised with the salsa...normally in NY you get no spice, this had a nice kick with flavor through. Really enjoyed this stop, think it was the best during this visit to Rochester for me...add a few more vegetarian/vegan menu items and it would be 5 stars for us. read more

Met a girlfriend for dinner last week. I've been coming here occasionally for many years. Service in the bar if you're not seated there is hit or miss- often hard to grab the attention of a server. We were seated in the dining room after a short wait (shorter than promised!) and had a great meal! The interior of the Winfield was fairly standard. Not fancy, but not a hole in the wall either. The menu features quite a variety of options, which was attractive, and they probably have something for everyone. I ordered the bacon blue burger. I asked for medium well, but it came out very well done - essentially charred. The meat didn't seem to be seasoned in any way, and the minimal amount of blue cheese led to the burger being extremely bland. I couldn't even taste the bacon. I ordered a side of Cajun fries, and even though they didn't taste Cajun at all, they were actually very tasty and cooked perfectly. My fiancée had the Kobe burger and she loved it. Her sweet potato fries were pretty good too. Another member of our party was given a baked potato that wasn't cooked. The waitress was accommodating and happily corrected the mistake. The place was somewhat noisy, and the staff we interacted with were very friendly. I'm not sure if it was an off-night with the way my burger came out, but I'd give the Winfield another shot sometime. read more

Our party of 8 were seated and served by Leeanna Kevin and young man from the kitchen on Thursday, Jan 26. We were celebrating birthdays and retirement, and both the service, food and drinks were excellent. My quesadilla was hot and filling with the jalapeños on the side. Everyone said their meal was delicious. The cake was delivered to our table with a cake server and plates- just a great time for all of us. We can't thank the staff enough. Went here on a whim last night and I am only disappointed that we didn't try Winfield sooner! We were greeted by a kind host and served by Emily, who was attentive, friendly, and so helpful when we asked for recommendations! She was also quick to bring a refill of my friend's soda during the meal, without being asked. It was Friday so we had to try the clam chowder, and it was amazing. Definitely made fresh with quality ingredients. For dinner my friend had the fish fry, and thoroughly enjoyed it. He especially loved the tartar sauce which he said tasted homemade. I had the buffalo chicken sandwich with Winfield sauce, and it was outstanding. I am somewhat of a purveyor of buffalo chicken sandwiches, and this was out of this world: spicy but not overkill, delicious bun, good helping of blue cheese, fried to crispy perfection. The sweet potato fries were good, too. We cleaned our plates and will certainly be back to support this awesome place! According to Yelp, they are closed today, but I assure you they are open on Sundays. I've been here many times and it is consistently good. I suggest getting the pesto bread appetizer and the French onion soup. I think you'd be safe with anything, I've never had a bad meal here. The French onion soup is probably the best I've ever had. The broth has the perfect balance of sweet and salty and the right amount of bubbling cheese and onions. We also had the ravioli which comes with a chunky tomato sauce with vegetables... we instead got it with plain marinara and the other sauce on the side. The vegetable tomato sauce would be too chunky and overwhelm the ravioli so we were happy about our choice of marinara. The price of the raviolis is $18 and I think that is WAY too high . They're only filled with cheese, no meat. It's usually very busy so it can get super loud. We usually always eat at the bar, but tonight was way too noisy so we opted for a dining table (which is extremely rare). The dining area was very dark and that makes it difficult to read the menu. They light candles around 5 p.m. at each table, but that still isn't enough light. The food was decent - standard American fare - sandwiches and fries. If you're in the mood for something simple and a place you can chill for a little while Winfield is a good choice.
