I chose the chicken philly, hubs got the ribs, kids were cheeseburgers all the way. My 75 years young aunt dared to try the jalapeño poppers. We all shared a bit to get a taste of everything. Chicken Philly was pretty darn tatsy. The bread was soft and fresh. I'm usually only a fan of the cole slaw I make but i had to try this bacon cole slaw. It was simply perfect! I would have never thought I would ever utter those words about cole slaw...pigs must be flying somewhere. Cheeseburgers were solid. Definitely a crowd pleaser. Poppers were good. Not the best ever but creamy and just enough kick. Ribs were "off the hook" said my grill master husband. He bbq's about 4 times a week and he can make anything on the grill taste fire!! Barbecued meats are somewhat difficult to review because there are many different regional styles and ways the meats can be presented. Many folks love their ribs to be "fall-off-the-bone", but as a KCBS certified barbecue judge, I can tell you that style is not considered competition-worthy. Some like their brisket tender but lean; others find the fatty pieces to be the most flavorful. What I can tell you for sure is that if I had come across the ribs, brisket, and chicken that I had the pleasure of eating today at an official KCBS competition, I would have given top scores to all three. Excellent barbecue, all with the perfect amount of smoky goodness and tenderness. I had the pleasure of meeting pitmaster/owner Dave and his partner Ash. Really nice gentlemen who are deservedly proud of the top-notch barbecue they are serving. They are happy to answer any questions you might have, and they definitely do know their barbecue. It's a simple stand with an awning, sitting at the very back of a large Raley's parking lot (and easy to miss if you don't know where to look), and from the outside it just doesn't look like it will be special. But BHBBQ is very special, and that is a lot of what makes this barbecue such a treat. One cautionary note: I just happened to find BHBBQ on Instagram yesterday and saw that they were going to be nearby today. They do travel, and so before you go hunting for it, be sure you know where they'll be. They announce their schedules on Instagram, Facebook, and on their website. They also have a phone number. But this one is definitely worth the search if you're into really excellent barbecue. We had the ribs, brisket, chicken, hot links, beans, and mac & cheese. Everything was top-notch. For about $70, we got two kids' meals (one slider and one chicken tenders), a shareables order of the tri-tip tacos (that my wife ate as her entree), and a two-protein platter with the pulled pork and tri-tip. They asked how we wanted our tri-tip cooked, and we answered medium, but all of the tri-tip came out well done. The flavors of everything were good, though, and the portions are substantial. The kids' meals are a great value. The two-protein platter was enough for two meals if you wanted it to be. The tacos were filled generously and were very tasty. I enjoyed the coleslaw- though I read some others find it bland. I did not think that at all. I really enjoyed the selection of sauces available at Buckhorn.
