Such a great place to try out when visiting Amsterdam. The was staff is friendly and helpful to us. The inside was a bit warm so I recommend sitting outside since it's cooler and great view. The grilled cheese was perfectly done and the cheese tasted great. The ossenworst was unique but tasty. The apple pie was a delicious experience. It was light and slightly sweet but not all sugary like American pies. The crust was delightful since it was more of a cheesecake crust and crumbly. Paired with the whipped cream it was a perfect balance of flavors. Their local beer IJwit was fantastic! Highly recommend it.
At Winkel 43, you can see frequent apple pies being made and baked through a clear kitchen glass divider. They make about 140 apple pies per day, so you would think that their apple pies are to die for. I thought they were good, but not spectacular (1 star off). I have had Dutch apple pie in other cafes in the area that are just as good. Service was poor. Servers were inattentive and unfriendly (1 star off). It took us awhile to get our apple pie slices, despite how many pies they make. Our server never checked on us.
Post dinner dessert - recommended by several friends. We arrived around 7pm on a Tuesday. Place was full up. Waited a few minutes for table. Not sure what else is on the menu as we just ordered apple pie with whipped cream. A single slice is plenty for two people. It is not overly sweet, the crust is really good (a slight taste of Biscoff cookies to me), and it has a few raisins in it as well. It was a nice night nice so we sat outside. The patio is large and seats plenty. The service is good, not great, but I was okay with it. My needs were meager - get my pie! N*joy!
Winkel 43 is supposedly the place to go for Dutch apple pie. It was busy when we arrived but we were seared right away. The service was unremarkable and servers were unfriendly. The pie itself was dry and not as flavorful as the other places we tried. I appreciated that the pie wasn't sweet and served at room temperature and that a slice with canned whipped cream and a coffee was only €9 but that's where it ends. I would not recommend making a special trip here and opt for a bar who serves apple pie.
Got the best apple pie here. Their crust was amazing and the homemade whipped went super well with it. Get the coffee to cut the sweetness and its just so good! The breakfast special was also pretty good with the cheese and butter!
While many know Winkel for their " Dutch Apple Pie", for me, it's similar to a traditional Apfel Kuchen. Call it what you want, it is worth the hype, worth the wait, worth the money. One of the best deserts you'll have in Amsterdam guaranteed!
We came late around 9:30 p.m for appeltaart and latte. We were lucky enough to be seated outside beacause it was crowded. The service is very quick and the pie and Latte is perfect!
If you're in Amsterdam looking for that iconic Dutch apple pie, Winkel 43 is the place to be--just be prepared for the crowds! We went on a weekend when they exclusively serve their famous apple pie, and while the lines can get pretty long, ours actually moved very quickly. The setup is a bit of a hustle: you order at the counter, pay, and then have to hunt for a table (they have seating indoors and outdoors) while balancing your food. Finding an open spot can definitely be a challenge, but we got incredibly lucky and snagged a seat at a communal table right as our plates were handed to us. Logistics aside, the pie is entirely worth it. It's honestly one of the best I've ever had. The crust is beautifully buttery and crumbly, and the warm apples have the absolute perfect texture--a brilliant balance of sweet and tart. It's not overly sweet on its own, but with a generous mountain of whipped cream and a hot coffee, it made for a wonderfully rich afternoon snack. I know a lot of people rave about their chocolate milk too, but the coffee pairing was exactly what we needed. Highly recommend braving the line for this!
Winkel 43 is the poster child for modern day marketing success--they've managed to land on every food blog, IG/TikTok/youtube travel and tourist page about Amsterdam; they're written up everywhere. To avoid FOMO, I found myself here at 10am on a Saturday morning, because I wasn't going to let long lines come between me and trying out their famous apple pie--so pie for breakfast it was! Better to eat those carbs in the morning and burn them off during the day right? (big wink) Good thing I arrived early because on a chilly Saturday, the Noordermarkt (the weekly farmers market located immediately outside this restaurant) was gearing up to full swing and tourists aplenty were flocking from all directions towards Winkel. There were 3 parties in front of me, and I waited for 10 minutes to order at the front counter. Both pie and tea were ready within a few minutes since with a limited menu on market Saturdays (morning thru afternoon), they keep a flow of pie slices ready in the wings ready to serve. Staff was courteous and efficient, they're clearly used to managing the routine chaos of busy days. For seating there are a couple dozen seats inside at communal tables or smaller cafe tables for 2-4. Outside seating in the form of picnic table and benches are available for about 20-25 though depending on the weather you may not want to linger. I was lucky enough to grab a seat next to a back window when another patron left, long enough to consume pie and tea. Verdict? Their Dutch style apple pie was indeed very good, meaty chunks of apple, not too strong on the warming spices, a balanced, sweetened short crust with just the right amount of sugar to give it a caramelized color and flavor. You can opt for with whipped cream (extra €0.90), or without (€5.10 for a plain slice). The serving is pretty large and decently filling, and I recommend it with the whipped cream, which added a little moisture and creaminess. Was it the best apple pie I've ever had? Questionable since there are so many versions out there, though I can say this was among the top. The crust had almost a cookie texture that was really unique, prob one of my top three pie crusts ever. The ginger tea (€2.90? I can't recall) w/fresh slab of ginger was a nice soothing hot drink (unsweetened) for a cold morning. Why 4 stars only? I can't say if this was an off-day, but when I went to use the restroom (two rooms downstairs down a very narrow and steep staircase), I walked in, washed my hands, and walked right back out. The odor in there was so foul it smelled of sewage leaking, even though I could not visibly see anything super dirty. Either way, I couldn't stand it more than 15 seconds, and I'm not usually squeamish about this type of stuff...but it was so extraordinarily overwhelming I felt like I would be ill. Ugh I hope it was an off day, and someone just had a bad time before I walked in. EDIT: reading other reviews apparently the bathroom is an issue for more than a few people so downgrading my review to 3 stars bc that's not ok...this needs to be handled better in a food establishment! When you come here, expect a line. Is this place overexposed? Yes. Is it overhyped? Absolutely not. It deserves its fame. We came here for the Apple Pie after seeing it highlighted all over social media. For a bonus, we also had the Dutch staple known as a tosti, which is their delicious version of a grilled cheese sandwich. The Apple Pie was incredibly delicious. The strudel crust was different from what you get in the US, and the pie actually tasted like apples and not sugar. The house made whipped cream took it up a level. On a cold rainy morning, this hit the spot. Our ham and cheese Tosti was also tasty. A tasty Tosti! The sandwich was well proportioned and not overstuffed with ingredients. Simple, yet elevated. The place is tight and cozy, but you don't mind it one bit when having food as good as they offer. You need to fit this into your Amsterdam itinerary if at all possible.
It was freezing cold with long line, but that didn't stop us from waiting. Thank goodness the line moves fast as everyone had their apple pies and moved on. The Apple Pie at Winkel 43 is a must try in Amsterdam. It was my wife and I's first stop after arriving in the city during our most recent trip. We loved it so much we had to visit a second time before leaving. The pie is made fresh and you can watch them make the pies while you are at the restaurant. Fresh warm buttery apples were surrounded by a crumbly ginger cookie-like crust. The pie was not too sweet and didn't have overly sugary syrup inside. This is the best Apple Pie I have ever had. The restaurant also has an extensive breakfast and lunch menu so we also tried the Brioche Cheese Souffle. A soft toasted bun was filled with crisp fried cheese with a gooey inside, crisp lettuce, and tangy pickles.
Their apple pie and hot chocolate (the perfect combination) are the bomb and worth braving the rush because everyone else visiting town also knows about their apple pie. We came in on a weekend afternoon and it was super crowded but we found two seats at the bar. The apple pie was just sweet enough and perfectly textured. The staff is serious about getting everyone what they need but also relaxed and seemed to be having a good time. I recommend stopping by if you're in Amsterdam for the best apple pie in town. read more

I don't personally like Apple Pie but I had to try this Dutch Apple Pie while in Amsterdam. The Apple pie at Winkel is nothing like the States. I absolutely love it. Fresh apples and cinnamon. Ohhhh and the crust! Mmmmm... Must try this place. read more

I'm not a dessert person (that's my bf) but wow this apple pie was to die for. We walked into the tiny shop and snagged a four seater in the window looking out to the dimly lit streets of Amsterdam. The pies came literally within 2 minutes... 40 minutes later...None of us left a crumb behind. This is a must in Amsterdam! read more

The pie is what we came for and it was definitely worth it. Long line, but worth it. Our Order: Apple pie slice, Americano, and cup of green tea Environment: very small and packed place. Verdict: great apple pie slice - definitely must have when in Amsterdam. The Apple pie was so full of flavor. Tips: come early or late. We had to wait a little bit and the "line" is a little unorganized since they are so busy. Shaft one piece for two people. Next Time: might come back if the line is not too long. read more
The BEST apple pie I had during my trip to Amsterdam. The reviews did not disappoint. The slice is pretty generous, enough to share between 2 people. My group came here twice during our trip, got apple pie and tea which was a perfect late night snack combination to combat the cold outside. read more
€4.30 for the best Apple pie I've had hands down. You know it's good when the apples aren't raw in the pie. You know it's even better when you can't stop digging your fork into the crust to get the apples. The crust was like a cookie on its own, enclosing the warm apple filling. It doesnt just look photogenic but it lives up to the hype too. I also ordered a mint tea that came with honey and a small cookie. read more

Amazing Dutch crust apple pie. We got there around 7pm and there was no wait. The crust was very different than typical American apple pie. It was thicker, more like a cake consistency and I loved the sweet bits of sugary crumble. Whipped cream was fresh. I am not a huge apple pie lover, however this was one of the best. read more
I've been to this place 3 times in 4 years, and every time it's been great. Make sure to get the pie with whipped cream. We came there around 5 PM, and parts of the menu weren't served anymore. However, we got the apple pie/genever combo and it was delicious. I'd recommend getting your own portion. I haven't tried apple pie anywhere else in Amsterdam and am happy to keep coming back to this place. read more

Most amazing apple pie I've ever had! It's so moist yet crunchy, sweet and salty, loads of cinnamon and pure foodgasm. Screw the calories, take whipped cream on the side. Didn't know whipped cream could even differ in flavor but their whipped cream is sensational! Big big fan, worth walking there for 45mins! Came in just to try the apple pie. It is a seat yourself spot, so any table you see opened, go ahead and seat yourself. We had a slice for 3.5€ and it was tasty. Didn't need the whipped cream, but the apple pieces are legit and big. The crispy edges of the pie were delicious with the apples. Service was hard to catch since we sat in a corner and behind a larger party. read more

The walk was nice and it is near Centraal station. There was a small line outside the shop just before lunch but it moved quickly. Their infamous Dutch apple pie is the best I have ever tasted in my life. The apples are cooked perfectly and the crust was crunchy. It tasted so good with the cream! The coffee I had: Cappuccino and latte were delicious too. There were outside settings but it was so sunny so it was understandably full but here were lots of seats inside. Definitely my highlight and I would come back for it next time I'm here!! read more
Came for the Apple pie and wished I would have come earlier in the trip! I saw everywhere this is the place to go for the Apple pie and everyone was right! I'm not usually a big pie person but this may have been the best pie I've had. The apples were so yummy and the crust of the pie had delicious cinnamon in it. Your Amsterdam trip is incomplete unless you make at least one stop a Winkel 43! I've been to Amsterdam twice and I made multiple visits to Winkle 43 on both trips! I can't get enough of it! Amazing Dutch Apple pies!! Ordered whole pies to bring back to US on both trips. Please order one day in advance. €23,85 per pie. Love the fresh mint tea with honey! Indoor seating is cozy, but limited. Plenty of outdoor seating. I actually should have 5 check-in's but one got lost. read more
It's kind of funny how the same dish-apple pie-is renowned as both quintessentially American and quintessentially Dutch. Actually though, Dutch appeltaart has more of a cake/cobbler-like consistency rather than a pastry crust. But both desserts have a warm cinnamon and apple filling! Anyway, the appeltaart at Winkel 43 is legendary. It's rich without being too sweet and served with a huge cascade of fresh whipped cream. You won't need to eat lunch afterwards! The espresso was also delicious, and it came with a cute little speculoos cookie! Not that I really needed more sugar... I loved the service and vibe in this shop, which is a little bit tucked away in the lovely Jordaan neighborhood. I wish I could have stuck around for longer and enjoyed the cozy atmosphere and a cup of glühwein! There's outdoor seating for the warmer months, too. Winkel 43 seems to have become a destination for tour groups, and it's for good reason. Don't miss the appeltaart! read more
Stopped by after dinner for some apple pie and we were definitely not disappointed. Don't expect the American kind though (syrupy and moist filling), it was different but oh so good! The pie was drier with thicker crust and they don't serve it warm. I know dry to describe pie doesn't sound good but trust me their apple pie is delicious! Never really had apple pie like theirs before but so worth it. Everything about it was tasty, the crust, filling and even the whipped cream. Very crave worthy! Their coffee was also strong. We didn't eat a full meal here but we did order snacks. The bitterballen (they listed it as fried meatball on the menu) and cheese sticks were both great. read more

If you want a low key, affordable and tasty breakfast to start your day in Amsterdam, this is a great place to go. Known to have Amsterdam's best Apple pie, both my husband and I came to Winkel 43 to give it a try in the morning. The little cafe was packed inside but you could also choose to sit in the outdoor patio. We waited for roughly 15 mins for the seats by the bar and was told that we had just missed the breakfast menu. the manager overheard the conversation and reassured that we would still be able to order from the breakfast menu if we wanted to. We ordered Their breakfast special which comes with a glass of orange juice, coffee and a bread roll with egg, bacon, cheese for 6.50 € plus 2 of their apple pies on the side. Their pies are indeed very good. The crust has a flaky and crunchy texture with so many apples stuffed into the pie. The Apple pie is also not overly sweet and You could choose to add whipped cream to it as well. I just wish that the Apple pies are served hot like straight out of the oven hot because that's how I'm used to eating pies. read more

What drew me to this place was the photos of their Dutch apple pie which I encountered on every travel or Amsterdam blog site. I love pies, I love desserts, but to be honest I was skeptical of just how good an apple pie can truly be. I WAS SO WRONG! Believe me when I say I dream about this Dutch apple pie quite frequently. I would grab a plane from Philadelphia and endure the 7 hour flight just for a slice...or two...of this heavenly treat. The Dutch apple pie is unlike anything I've been able to find in the US and completely different than what one usually thinks of as apple pie. For starters, it's thick! The crust is almost like a bread pudding but firm. The filling is more traditional but tastes incredibly fresh. To top it all off they add an optional homemade whipped cream which I highly recommend. It's truly the icing on the cake to an already decadent and glorious dessert. We went back three times on our stay! It's located on a cute square so you can enjoy some coffee and other bar snacks in the open air. I can't wait to try it again and I envy everyone who travels to Amsterdam since they're so much closer to this incredible pie. read more

Definitely get the apple pie here! I would give this place a 5 star if they only sold apple pies but since they also had other food, I had to knock one star off since the other dishes I ordered were just ok. We got the quiche and soup. Both were just ok. But the apple pie - BEST apple pie I've had! American apple pies are too slimey, gooey, and sweet for me. The apples inside this apple pie still has a crunch and the crust is buttery thick and crunchy! It was so good that we came back the second day for another apple pie! The space inside is small but they also have an eating area outside which is where we ate since we had a stroller. Tip - you can go straight inside to the cash register to order an apple pie to go so you don't have to wait in line! read more
