At Winkel 43, you can see frequent apple pies being made and baked through a clear kitchen glass divider. They make about 140 apple pies per day, so you would think that their apple pies are to die for. I thought they were good, but not spectacular (1 star off). I have had Dutch apple pie in other cafes in the area that are just as good. Service was poor. Servers were inattentive and unfriendly (1 star off). It took us awhile to get our apple pie slices, despite how many pies they make. Our server never checked on us.
We came late around 9:30 p.m for appeltaart and latte. We were lucky enough to be seated outside beacause it was crowded. The service is very quick and the pie and Latte is perfect!
Post dinner dessert - recommended by several friends. We arrived around 7pm on a Tuesday. Place was full up. Waited a few minutes for table. Not sure what else is on the menu as we just ordered apple pie with whipped cream. A single slice is plenty for two people. It is not overly sweet, the crust is really good (a slight taste of Biscoff cookies to me), and it has a few raisins in it as well. It was a nice night nice so we sat outside. The patio is large and seats plenty. The service is good, not great, but I was okay with it. My needs were meager - get my pie! N*joy!
Got the best apple pie here. Their crust was amazing and the homemade whipped went super well with it. Get the coffee to cut the sweetness and its just so good! The breakfast special was also pretty good with the cheese and butter!
Winkel 43 is supposedly the place to go for Dutch apple pie. It was busy when we arrived but we were seared right away. The service was unremarkable and servers were unfriendly. The pie itself was dry and not as flavorful as the other places we tried. I appreciated that the pie wasn't sweet and served at room temperature and that a slice with canned whipped cream and a coffee was only €9 but that's where it ends. I would not recommend making a special trip here and opt for a bar who serves apple pie.
While many know Winkel for their " Dutch Apple Pie", for me, it's similar to a traditional Apfel Kuchen. Call it what you want, it is worth the hype, worth the wait, worth the money. One of the best deserts you'll have in Amsterdam guaranteed!

If you're in Amsterdam looking for that iconic Dutch apple pie, Winkel 43 is the place to be--just be prepared for the crowds! We went on a weekend when they exclusively serve their famous apple pie, and while the lines can get pretty long, ours actually moved very quickly. The setup is a bit of a hustle: you order at the counter, pay, and then have to hunt for a table (they have seating indoors and outdoors) while balancing your food. Finding an open spot can definitely be a challenge, but we got incredibly lucky and snagged a seat at a communal table right as our plates were handed to us. Logistics aside, the pie is entirely worth it. It's honestly one of the best I've ever had. The crust is beautifully buttery and crumbly, and the warm apples have the absolute perfect texture--a brilliant balance of sweet and tart. It's not overly sweet on its own, but with a generous mountain of whipped cream and a hot coffee, it made for a wonderfully rich afternoon snack. I know a lot of people rave about their chocolate milk too, but the coffee pairing was exactly what we needed. Highly recommend braving the line for this!
Winkel 43 is the poster child for modern day marketing success--they've managed to land on every food blog, IG/TikTok/youtube travel and tourist page about Amsterdam; they're written up everywhere. To avoid FOMO, I found myself here at 10am on a Saturday morning, because I wasn't going to let long lines come between me and trying out their famous apple pie--so pie for breakfast it was! Better to eat those carbs in the morning and burn them off during the day right? (big wink) Good thing I arrived early because on a chilly Saturday, the Noordermarkt (the weekly farmers market located immediately outside this restaurant) was gearing up to full swing and tourists aplenty were flocking from all directions towards Winkel. There were 3 parties in front of me, and I waited for 10 minutes to order at the front counter. Both pie and tea were ready within a few minutes since with a limited menu on market Saturdays (morning thru afternoon), they keep a flow of pie slices ready in the wings ready to serve. Staff was courteous and efficient, they're clearly used to managing the routine chaos of busy days. For seating there are a couple dozen seats inside at communal tables or smaller cafe tables for 2-4. Outside seating in the form of picnic table and benches are available for about 20-25 though depending on the weather you may not want to linger. I was lucky enough to grab a seat next to a back window when another patron left, long enough to consume pie and tea. Verdict? Their Dutch style apple pie was indeed very good, meaty chunks of apple, not too strong on the warming spices, a balanced, sweetened short crust with just the right amount of sugar to give it a caramelized color and flavor. You can opt for with whipped cream (extra €0.90), or without (€5.10 for a plain slice). The serving is pretty large and decently filling, and I recommend it with the whipped cream, which added a little moisture and creaminess. Was it the best apple pie I've ever had? Questionable since there are so many versions out there, though I can say this was among the top. The crust had almost a cookie texture that was really unique, prob one of my top three pie crusts ever. The ginger tea (€2.90? I can't recall) w/fresh slab of ginger was a nice soothing hot drink (unsweetened) for a cold morning. Why 4 stars only? I can't say if this was an off-day, but when I went to use the restroom (two rooms downstairs down a very narrow and steep staircase), I walked in, washed my hands, and walked right back out. The odor in there was so foul it smelled of sewage leaking, even though I could not visibly see anything super dirty. Either way, I couldn't stand it more than 15 seconds, and I'm not usually squeamish about this type of stuff...but it was so extraordinarily overwhelming I felt like I would be ill. Ugh I hope it was an off day, and someone just had a bad time before I walked in. EDIT: reading other reviews apparently the bathroom is an issue for more than a few people so downgrading my review to 3 stars bc that's not ok...this needs to be handled better in a food establishment! When you come here, expect a line. Is this place overexposed? Yes. Is it overhyped? Absolutely not. It deserves its fame. We came here for the Apple Pie after seeing it highlighted all over social media. For a bonus, we also had the Dutch staple known as a tosti, which is their delicious version of a grilled cheese sandwich. The Apple Pie was incredibly delicious. The strudel crust was different from what you get in the US, and the pie actually tasted like apples and not sugar. The house made whipped cream took it up a level. On a cold rainy morning, this hit the spot. Our ham and cheese Tosti was also tasty. A tasty Tosti! The sandwich was well proportioned and not overstuffed with ingredients. Simple, yet elevated. The place is tight and cozy, but you don't mind it one bit when having food as good as they offer. You need to fit this into your Amsterdam itinerary if at all possible.
It was freezing cold with long line, but that didn't stop us from waiting. Thank goodness the line moves fast as everyone had their apple pies and moved on. The Apple Pie at Winkel 43 is a must try in Amsterdam. It was my wife and I's first stop after arriving in the city during our most recent trip. We loved it so much we had to visit a second time before leaving. The pie is made fresh and you can watch them make the pies while you are at the restaurant. Fresh warm buttery apples were surrounded by a crumbly ginger cookie-like crust. The pie was not too sweet and didn't have overly sugary syrup inside. This is the best Apple Pie I have ever had. The restaurant also has an extensive breakfast and lunch menu so we also tried the Brioche Cheese Souffle. A soft toasted bun was filled with crisp fried cheese with a gooey inside, crisp lettuce, and tangy pickles.
It was great to experience the apple pie but it doesn't taste particularly different than any other apple pies I've tried. Given all the hype I guess I expected more! Is it a bad pie? Not at all! Does it live up to the hype? Also no. Should you still try it? Of course! But I wouldn't go out of my way to go there unless you are in the area! The staff here are nice and friendly so that was a plus!
Ordered: Dutch Apple Pie with Whipped Cream (~€6) Aya's take: A must stop when visiting Amsterdam! We stopped by around 10pm one evening and found a table outside as they were full inside. We were only there for one thing and before we knew it, we had our Dutch Apple Pie. I have to say this is by far the best apple pie I've had. It's somewhere between a pie and cake, the apples are cooked perfectly and didn't taste tart or artificial, and the whipped cream balanced out the thickness. A trip to Amsterdam is not complete without getting some apple pie from Winkel 43. We trekked halfway across Amsterdam by foot to get to this joint. Since the city is very safe, we walked with our two children after 10 pm and felt perfectly fine. Also got beautiful views of the canals at night. On the outside the place looks very unassuming, just another corner bar and restaurant. Since it was late, there were no lines. However all the tables were taken,but there were plenty of bar seating. We took our seats and told the waitress we were here for the apple pie. Since we looked totally like American tourists, she said she figured that's what we were there for. It came out in a quickly since there was already a whole pie sitting on the counter waiting to be sliced. We were told they bake 120 pies a day and sells all of them. It was totally worth the effort. The best part of the pie was the crust. It's almost like a cookie crumb crust, thick and delicious. The filling was tasty without being cloyingly sweet. My wife, who usually doesn't like sweet American desserts, asked for a second slice. It was that good. Winkel 43 totally deserves their reputation for having a great Amsterdam (I'm not going to say Dutch because that means something else in America) apple pie. read more
The apple pie here is truly one of the best I've ever had. The crust is flaky and crispy while the pie itself is molten to the right amount. It's not too sugary too and remains true to what an apple pie should be. The hype is real. On the other hand, their food is really bad. Please only come for the pie. We spent the day walking the city of Amsterdam. By mid-afternoon, we were ready for a treat and I had read about Winkel 43 and their apple pie. That sounded perfect on a bit of a chilly day. We arrived only to find a line, which is typical of this eatery. We didn't wait long and were seated inside. We ordered the apple pie and a coffee and a hot chocolate. Wow, is all I can say. The apple pie is large, but absolutely worth any wait you may experience. We took small and slow bites to savor each delicious forkful. Service was great, and again well worth the wait. read more
This was our first stop in Amsterdam. Even though I'm not big on pies, I wanted to try their famous apple pie. Unsurprisingly, there was a line when we arrived. We ended up sitting outside at a communal picnic table as it was a shorter wait. The cream on the pie was light and tasty. The crust was thick and my favorite part was the top. For a place that only does apple tarts I expected more. Nothing had and nothing exceptional! It was interesting that the style of apple tart in NL is such that the crust is more biscuit-like (think Biscoff) vs flaky. If you want to sit inside you wait in the queue, but if you want to sit outside you can just sit and flag down a waiter/waitress. read more
The hype is real, this was the BEST apple pie I've ever had in my life. The only thing that would make it better is if it was warmed up. The line was out the door when we arrived around 5pm, but luckily our wait was only about 10-15 mins for 2 pp. Their tables are very small, if you have a big group I would recommend outdoor seating. The big slice is definitely shareable, but you don't have to. ;) We were debating for a long time if we should order a 2nd slice, such tough life choices. The apples are naturally sweet, the crust is like eating the most delicious cookie, with a touch of the light whip cream in each bite is ohhh la la! By far the best Apple pie you will ever experience, it's just perfect. Not too sweet, cinnamon and apples baked to perfection with a crust that you couldn't ignore! They also have great chai tea here and if for whatever insane reason you skip the apple pie their grilled cheese with choice of young or aged cheese is also habit forming. read more
I was a weirdo and went here twice during my trip to Amsterdam. I had the pie the first time after breakfast, and honestly I remember the pie more than the breakfast lol i would definitely just get the pie here and breakfast somewhere else. The first time i shared one pie with my boyfriend. It was a warm one and we definitely enjoyed it with the coffee. The two are a perfect compliment to each other. The second time I went alone and had a whole one myself it was just as good but the pie was cold. Between the two, I definitely preferred the pie warm. If possible, I'd ask for a warm slice to have. I saw plenty of tourists but also locals just chilling and reading or catching up with friends, so that's a good sign :) if i'm back in Amsterdam, I'll definitely be back! read more
Read so much about this place mainly known for the Dutch apple pie. There's plenty of breakfast options and the place is opening pretty early and stays open late. During peak hours there could be a line since there's not many tables on the inside....So I would say come at an off time or just do the to go option (it's much quicker and you go directly inside to pay. No artificial flavors/sweetness. They use real apples (semi tart) and it's not too sweet overall compared to most apple pies. The outside exterior is cooked with a thick layer of crunchiness. Decent pie, but not as hyped up and as good as everyone says it is. 1 decent sized slice is around 5 EUR. (On the pricier side). Good to try but not sure if I'd purely return for "how good it was". read more

This place ROCKS! The apple pie lived up to the hype; the bitterballen was delicious; highly recommend. There will be a line, but it moves pretty quickly and definitely worth it! We absolutely had to check out Winkel 43 on our vacation to Amsterdam, and really enjoyed it! We had to wait in line outside but the weather was nice and the line went quick. The space is very cozy, and I really enjoyed the ambiance. The staff all seemed young and like they were all friends, which made the vibe really nice! Even though they were hanging out they were very efficient at work, which is also appreciated. I got their fresh mint tea and the apple pie, as so many others have done. The pie was good, but not mind blowing. I expected it to be warm as per other reviews, and it wasn't, but I don't think that took away from the experience. The apples were a little on the softer side. The crust is almost like a cake/cookie. Super tasty! read more

Was staying close by, and walked past this place and saw everyone with apple pie. Didn't know that apparently this is the place to go. Came back the next day to try it out. It didn't disappoint, the crust was flaky and it tasted so fresh. The cream that was on top was delicious. My mom loved it so much, we came back the next day. Can't speak about the other food or drinks. Everyone around us, was also just eating the apple pie. read more

As the Dutch say... "Het komt allemaal in één maag" It all goes into one stomach! Brilliant! Did you know the tallest Dutch stood 8-feet tall?! Albert Johan Kramer born in Amsterdam was officially measured at 7-feet 11.5" inches tall, so pardon my slight exaggeration. Urban legend says he loved his Dutch Apple Pie & Noordermarkt milk! Winkel 43 was high on my foodie list when I found myself wandering the streets of Amsterdam in Holland! As a self-proclaimed Apple-Pie connoisseur I had to taste test Winkel 43's Ze world famous Dutch Apple Pie! Amsterdam might not be in the top echelon of cuisine, but what the Dutch do right is wooden clogs, growing tall kids, and Apple Pie! On my final morning in Amsterdam is when I decided to stop by Winkel 43 on Noordermarkt in the Jordaan neighborhood. After a picturesque stroll from Central train station, maybe 15-minutes or so, is when I arrive to the wonderful Dutch building. Winkel 43 resembles more a charming house, if not for the green awning and outdoor café tables. I enter the door to tell the Winkel 43 hostess and waitress that I would be dining outside. I am told to sit anywhere I like, which was lucky for me, since this place is usually packed with Dutch giants lol. It was a sunny day in Holland, so being Euro, a must! I find a comfy spot and handed the menu and I am told of their breakfast special. If you speak only English, no worries, as most Dutch people in Amsterdam speak at least 2-3 languages, including English. Of course, I speak fluent Dutch, slight exaggeration ;), so no worries for me as I decide to order the breakfast special, which includes a Dutch Breakfast, Orange Juice (fresh squeezed), and my choice of Cappuccino. I also order Ze famous Dutch Apple Pie for after meal. My sassy waitress winks and says of course with cream, right? Okay, the Winkel wink came naturally for her, but of course I want whipped cream with that Dutch Apple Pie! ;) Cappuccino arrives first and oh my it hit the spot! Strong and smooth is what this big Dutch boy needed! The Dutch breakfast arrived shortly, consisting of Bread Roll & Egg, Cheese, Bacon. A very basic breakfast, yet comforting. The Orange Juice so awakening and the Cappuccino smooth! As expected, the star of the show was saved for after breakfast. Ze Dutch Apple Pie served with whipped cream! How can I describe this wonderful creation in words? Ohhhhmmmmmmm zeeeheeh! Oh my! Absolutely the best Dutch Apple Pie, ever! The cookie crust mind-blowing, with the fresh baked apples mingling in a secret sauce, w/ fresh whipped cream just upped this incredible Dutch experience! A visit to Amsterdam must include a stroll to Winkel 43 and a slice of Ze world famous Dutch Apple Pie! I can't promise that you'll grow to Albert Johan Kramer's legendary 8-feet height, as his own brother-in-law stood only 2-feet tall (truth *google* it lol) So most likely your growth spurt somewhere in between that?! This place was located right nearby and it happened to be open early. I made my way and was greeted immediately. I found myself a table and was able to place my order. Hot tea & cheese and sausage for breakfast. The ambience was nice. It seems like a local hangout for those who live here. This place is known for its apple pie but I didn't have a chance to try it, perhaps when I visit again. I hope you have a good experience when you visit this place. read more

If you are looking for dutch apple pie this is the place to go! I happed to walk on by & decided to give this place a try & I am happy I did! Be prepared to wait in a line at certain times as this is a popular destination for locals & tourists alike. After about 10 or so minutes we were seated in the back corner of the cafe. The server came over promptly & took our order. We ordered 2 apple pies, 1 hot chocolate & a cappuccino. The food & drinks came out quickly & we were very satisfied with the everything! Will definitely stop by again if I happen to be back in Amsterdam! read more
This Apple pie is delicious! It's not overly sweet at all. The flavor is great especially the crust. Even when there is a line, it moves fast. We sat outside and ordered two slices of pie. The service is all great! It started to rain when we sat outside and they provided umbrellas. Super impressed with this place. read more

Heard good things about this place to get iconic Dutch apple pie. It was good - moist but not soggy, flavorful but not too sweet; but nothing particularly special if I'm being honest. I still think it's worth a visit if you're in the area though! Just don't go in expecting a life-changing apple pie. read more

There was a line when we arrived late afternoon but didnt wait too long. I think most went there for their famous apple pie. And there were a lot doing take away of the pie. It's the only Dutch apple pie iv tried during my trip here so no basis of comparison. But as a pie lover, here's my verdict: 1. It was good, but i've taster better ones. 2. I like that it wasnt overly sweet. 3. Crust was too thick and tasted like a cookie. 4. Serving was quite big. Priced at almost 6 euros a slice. 5. I like french apple pie more than dutch. Ordered hot chocolate drink too. They just usee their famous choco powder brand Chocomel. read more
