Okay, 3.5 stars, not 3... I've skated at this rink quite a few times over the years, most recently for a hockey tournament. If you're here for the sport, the ice is always fantastic; consistently solid and well-maintained, which is clearly why the Winterhawks use it as their practice facility. However, the rest of the facility definitely shows its age. The stands are nice enough, though they are located on the far side from the entrance, making for a bit of a trek if you're carrying gear. The lobby isn't huge, and the locker rooms are a tight squeeze, especially if you have a full-roster adult hockey team trying to gear up at once. On the positive side, you can tell they are making an effort to modernize. The lobby, locker rooms, and bathrooms have been renovated, which is a huge improvement over how they used to be. The staff is also very friendly and helpful, whether you're there for a tournament or just a public skate. It's a classic, "old school" rink that has its quirks but remains a reliable staple for the local hockey community. read more

This morning i walked outside and it felt like fall. I knew the rink would be packed and I was spot on. The Zamboni was on the ice when we got there (about 10am), but despite the website saying open skate was 10:15-12:15, the throngs weren't allowed until 10:30. Hopefully they will extend until 12:30. Anyway my daughter is excited to start lessons even though they don't start until after the new year. read more

Gonna give this 5 stars, not because they are perfect but this place is a great location for family fun! First time visitor, walked in and the cashier asked "how many skaters?" "Two." "$40" .. pays ... "thanks". I had no idea what to do or where to go so I walked back to the counter and asked. She explained it well enough and we found skates and taught ourselves how to put them on. Maybe everyone coming here are seasoned pros but it was a little off putting for a first impression. We were on the ice early and skated for an hour. The rink filled up pretty well but there was enough room for every one. Lots of different levels of skaters sharing the rink and bleacher type seats for spectators. Lockers are $0.50 - totally reasonable! All in all, we will be back! $20 includes skates ... nice location, especially now that I know the flow! read more

The rink is huge, well kept/zambonied and has really great locker rooms and a very spacious waiting room area. My only complaint is the pricing. $25 to skate is a little outrageous and the fact that the skate rental is included in price so then therefore, if you're not having to pay for a skate rental because you have your own skates and such, you still have to pay the price as everyone else renting skates, which is really annoying. Really not cost-effective if you were wanting to go skate multiple times a week.... and they do not offer any sort of pass or yearly subscription to go skating for weekly skaters. read more

Nice ice, nice staff, bar with cheap beer, clean locker rooms. Plenty of extended public skate sessions. Lots of stick and puck daily. I haven't gotten to go to a game here yet, just as skater but am excited for the opportunity to. The staff were all super friendly. They have a pro shop but are conveniently located next to a play it again for budget shoppers. Lots of other food and entertainment right there. read more

They really should not have hockey games late if they do not want people there. The staff was very rude to multiple people watching the game. They started removing chairs and vacuuming right on top of us. A woman asked if she could buy a bag of chips for her young child who was hungry and they refused suggesting spectators were should not be here that late. By the end of the game we had all migrated to one corner of the room and they even turned the lights off before the players came in from the ice. We were standing in the dark... and the game wasn't even running late!! I have never had staff members make me feel so unwelcome. read more

Smells like garbage and the staff is rude. I was in with my daughter for public skate and the place smelt bad and the clerk was very rude.

The schedule changed. My little girl and I went on sunday because it was a santa skate. She was so excited that she was ready at 7 o'clock in the morning when she rolled out of bed. She was dressed in warm clothes, had here backpak full of knee and elbow pads, and her helmut was clipped onto a loop. This girl is ready for some serious ice time with santa. We had to cool her jets because the Skate with Santa did not start until 3:30. That is forever for a little girl to wait. We get there way early, pay and get her skates. The Zamboni is running around the rink now and she is hurring to get her skates on. Elbow pads, knee pads, helmut and she runs to the door. Another 5 minutes watching the Zamboni make its final passes and back into the barn. She was not quite the first but in the group. She has been waiting all fall to go skating as the place has been under construction (and still is) there have been no public skate in a long, long time. At first she falls down more than she stands up. But she is starting to get the hang of it again. 30 minutes go by and she asks, where is Santa? Then another 30 minutes, then another, and another. Come to find out that they changed the schedule and he will not be showing today. She was not a happy camper. Also they do not have public skate for kid at reasonable time except for holiday weeks. read more

While I have always appreciated supporting ice and roller skating this business can not be supported due to their ridiculous cost of admission. Ten short years ago it was $8 plus skate rental. Now an exhorbant amount of $25, skate rental included. Why are those with skates paying the same without? With the ridiculous price how about giving those with skates a small break in price? It's cheaper to skate in Phoenix than here. Stop copying Sherwood Ice Arena and their pricing policies. How about offering coupons or discounts? read more

Just now leaving the ice rink after two continuous hours of skating. Had a blast. Great time on a very rainy Northwest day. Even the teenagers had fun. Any public sport has its challenges. I'm bringing extra socks (had to rent a size up because the don't have 1/2 sizes) next time plus a bandage for the small blister (still totally worth it!). We didn't stop to have any refreshments, but the line was long for them. I came to skate, so we ate beforehand. We came right after the Zamboni (3:00-5:00ish)i, the ice seemed decent, but again the public chops up things a lot. I'm looking forward to coming back again! read more

***wowee zowee*** I want to start by saying the only thing keeping Winterhawks Skating Center from a 5 star review is the temperature. It's freezing in there! That being said I loved the environment. Nick, our bartender kindly informed us without prompt that the $4 beers were only $2 if you were "watching a friend". A lot of places wouldn't do this for out of towners or people not in the know, very happy about this. The bathrooms were immaculate, I've never seen such a well kept restroom in my life. Lots of hockey nerds, hockey on TV, on the ice, old dudes hanging out talking about hockey, very chill. My favorite part was that Nick, our bartender, was also the Zamboneeeee driver. How cool is that?! Keep doing your thing guys, can't wait for the championships! read more

Super crowded. Skated for over 1 hr with the kids. Great indoor activity on a typical Oregon rainy day.

We quit lessons at Winterhawks because the children were so disappointed in the program. We were shocked by their irresponsible decision to place 15 children in each class with one teacher. The teachers could not learn the children's names or give them any individualized instruction. In Level 3, the mob of children went back and forth across the rink repeating the same mistakes because all their teacher could do was shout directions to them for their next trip across the rink. In Level 5, the teacher had to manage two large circles to accommodate 15 skaters at different skill levels and could not give feedback to individual children. In the past Winterhawks had small group lessons and both children enjoyed them and made a lot of progress. This winter they were frustrated and disappointed. read more

Valley Ice Arena has been around since the mid sixties -- and it shows. The entire complex is in a sad state of affairs; I'd say it's a safe bet that much of the facility retains the /original parts/ from when it was first constructed. And yet, this only adds to the charm of the rink. Valley Ice Arena is, very literally, attached to its past. Tonya Harding used to practice here as a kid and, if you look up old videos, you'll see that it looks exactly the same then as it does now. But people looking to Ice Skate aren't going to be looking for a swank facility, and even if they were, they'd be sorta missing the point of the skating. Skating is about being 8 years old and falling repeatedly in a sweater and gloves, even though it's 85°F and sunny outside. Skating is about the smell of old leather shoes and a cold nose. Skating is not about being in the Pearl or at the new, hot bar in the area. The best deal at this place is actually their Friday night skate from 9:30p to midnight. It's not for the kiddies, but it's only $5 and you get skates. If you come during the normal public skate times, they offer rates starting at $8/person and going down to $6 for groups of 10 or more. The skates you need are always in stock and it's never terribly busy unless you catch them on a Saturday and there's a birthday party. The last element of any business is the people who run it -- and these people love what they do. They love the rink, they love the sports that are played on the ice and they love the kids that come through. Once again, they're not super high-class people, but they love what they do and it shows in the way they treat their customers. Here's hoping they're around for another 40 years so *my* kids can take their little ones there. read more

The first stakes I rented had a broken heel, the blade was only attached at the toe. The second set had no edge on the blade. And when I asked if they could sharpen the skates at first they said "we don't sharpen those kind" then I told them they were skates I was renting from them, then they said "we only sharpen them once in awhile". What kind of service is that? The blades were dangerously dull and they flat out refused to sharpen them. I've been ice skating for the last 20 years and I've never had blades that dull or service that bad. I would only recommend this place if you own you own skates, that's why they are getting 2 stars instead of 1. read more

I went there for adult skating lessons. Instructor was at all interested in teaching. She was annoyed when I was struggling on walk on ice - this was my first time skating and I could not immediately glide on ice like she wanted me to. She left the arena as soon as time was up, leaving students in the middle and struggling to walk on ice. Someone else came to help us get off the rink. Very bad experience. read more

If you are an adult who likes to play hockey and you aren't a nitpicky jerk or a crybaby this place will suit you just fine. The league prices are reasonable, the facilities are clean and above average (but not without its foibles), and the staff is pretty cool and accommodating. Ice cold beers waiting in the locker room after the game. As far as the pro shop goes, the guys here really go the extra mile for their customers. Definitely makes you think twice about buying your gear online. They do a killer job getting custom team jerseys made just the way you want them. read more

Expensive and poorly managed. Even though there are lessons going on in the same area (which is very disruptive) no one is supervising rink use. Public skate is $12 dollars plus $3 dollars for ice skate rentals. They do not make the full rink available during public skate hours. Part of the rink is blocked off for three people playing hockey. If you haven't been to WSC (formerly known as Valley) lately, you're missing out. The remodel has improved the facility and the ice significantly, and the current management is courteous and helpful. We have two hockey players (three, counting my husband) and one figure skater in the family. We've been to all the area rinks. As an observer, I love the warm viewing area and I appreciate the occasional afternoon freeskates for figure skaters. And I really appreciate that the mini-mites hockey ice times are reasonable--not at 5 and 6 AM, as we experienced in our previous city. The skate school has been wonderful for my two younger children. All the coaches we've experienced are warm and encouraging (the coaches cycle through skating levels, so the students are exposed to a variety of teachers). The staff is also outstanding, often going above and beyond to help get questions answered, find lost skate guards, and facilitate communication. The skate shop is also great. They have plenty of stuff there, and will order what you want if they don't carry it. I've never had to wait to get skates sharpened. And the prices are more than reasonable, considering their lack of competition. Added bonus: WSC has their liquor license. The beer selection is pretty basic, but it's still beer. The adult leagues can pre-order beer; after the game, a cooler is waiting in the locker room. The only reason I didn't give WSC 5 stars: I wish the snack bar offered more healthy options. Fresh fruit, sandwiches, soup. And I do wish there was more public skate time--but with the Winterhawks getting first dibs on ice time, I understand why that can't happen during their season. read more

The Winterhawks Skating Center is fabulous! This year the skating school added a skating and hockey program for kids 5 and under. My 3 year old gets great instruction from a qualified coach and is happily working his way up to the 5 and under hockey program. The employees at the rink go out of their way to be helpful. We have great experiences at the Winterhawks Skating Center. Note that the skating and hockey are for both boys and girls. I've observed several young female hockey players and they seem to have a great time on the ice. I also see some great young male figure skaters during figure skating practice. read more

Lessons are adequate, but lack corrective instruction. Classes are in the format of "demonstrate once, emulate once," and makeup lessons are not offered for classes missed. Compared to other local rinks, there are fewer open skating sessions. It is incredibly cold in the rink itself, which is both good and bad. Great for the ice quality, but legitimately uncomfortable for spectators and small skaters (my daughters fingers are always numb after her 30-minute lesson, even with gloves). read more

This is where I play hockey in an adult league. This facility has made huge strides over the last year and are on track to become the premier ice skating facility in the Portland metro area. My review of the rink is relative to others in the area. The ice quality is excellent and the boards are in good condition, although there are a few gaps and stanchions which cause unusual bounces. The doors are functional, although the locking mechanism in the penalty box can be cumbersome (not that I have any personal experience with it ;-) The player benches are TERRIBLE and cause endless frustration. They are too wide and it is very difficult to slide down the bench in front of someone that is seated. They have a new pro shop that will provide you with all the equipment you need at a reasonable price. The common area has a large flat panel TV and decent chairs for watching the ice in a warm location. The biggest problem at this facility are the locker rooms. The rooms are too small for even pee wee players and the showers are terrible (small, cold, inconsistent). Once they fix the locker rooms and remodel the common area, this place will be great. read more

I think it's a great place. If you are looking for fancy, don't even try skating/hockey at all because it is not about fancy. It's about good, clean fun at a decent price with nice people around you. The ice is perfectly decent. What could they do better? Hmmmm.... bigger locker rooms would be great. Other than that, if you are too picky, please find another sport, because we don't want you around us. read more
