I had fun but I would love to see some change at this rink…read more I grew up very spoiled by the ice rink that was in my small town in Wyoming. It was seasonal but it was free to skate there because of local donors. There were always multiple staff who skated around the rink to make sure everyone was safe and guided people around those who had fallen or were creating unsafe situations for all the skaters. The figure skaters only practiced in the middle of the rink that had cones around it to prevent any public members from confusion and entering that space. You were asked to follow the direction of the skating and not go against the flow. There was a mandatory break halfway to clear the ice. This rink is a far cry from that. Skating is honestly a hazard here! I had to check in mid skate to see if I was still in public skate because there were so many figure skaters on the rink doing whatever they wanted. Skating wrong ways, blocking the path, zig zagging between skaters, all the things figure skaters do.I had a few almost run ins myself. I don't understand why public skate can't be a fun time to skate around and around without worrying if you're going to have a head on collision with the figure skater. I felt really frustrated because this wasn't the first time that I've come here and had this happen. Can there be a designated time for the figure skaters to practice? I get it.. share the ice but when it's a literal free for all it's hard to predict where to skate and stay safe. I'm familiar with how to stop safely but for newbies this is really unsafe. I want to take my nephews here but is there a time when it's truly a public skate?

The facility is well set up with great amenities, including large locker rooms, a nice beer garden, and a convenient snack shop. It's a true hub for ice sports, hosting adult and kids league hockey and figure skating, plus open skating sessions with both skate and skating helper rentals available. The vibe here is definitely improving, and I'm really looking forward to the upstairs bar and restaurant that is reportedly coming soon! A cool, reliable spot for everything ice-related.

Dust your ice skates off, because winter is here! Well, maybe you don't own a pair of skates, but…read moreat least you've got a local ice skating rink nearby. What am I talking about? Well, it's not a huge seasonal event like the Holiday Ice Rink Union Square in San Francisco and it's probably only one-fourth the size of The Rink at Rockefeller Center, but it's the Winter Village at Orenco Station Plaza! Yippeee!!!! OK, so first off, I'm new to the area but was told about this event happens every December. I didn't think much of it, until I started seeing them construct the ice rink. Then I knew something special was happening. But before I get into more details about skating and Winter Village, I just wanted to disclose that most of my information is primarily from their website versus what I've seen and experienced. Now onto the details: ~ When is it? Well, Winter Village opened last November 29th and will end January 5th, 2020. You basically get about five weeks of fun! And I'm actually somewhat surprised that no one has written up a review for this by now. ~ Main feature? Well it's the ICE RINK of course! A small one that's only about 115 feet long and 26 feet wide. It is outdoor, but covered by a huge white tent. With all the rain as of recent, it's actually good that the ice is covered and protected. The rink capacity can hold up to 70 skaters during a session. You do have to sign a waiver prior to skating, and sessions are about 90 minutes each. You can find their skating calendar and session pricing here: https://www.hillsboro-oregon.gov/home/showdocument?id=24060 ~ In general, prices with skate rentals are: Adults $13 Children (ages 4-11) $10 Children under 3 FREE! Want a discount? Bring your own skates and get $2 off. Or military and First Responders (and family members) get $1 off. ~ Features I've seen: Kids skating in special strollers. Cool winter decor and colorful lighting everywhere. I've seen the rink reserved, closed during some sessions for private events. So yes, you can rent the entire place all for yourself if you need to plan a private party. A great idea if you plan to have a season ending get together with coworkers. I've definitely seen it busier on weekends versus weekdays, so plan accordingly. ~ What I didn't expect from the village? The Winter Market on Sundays (10-3pm). Yes, a tiny farmers market with about 8 vendors selling things from home-made chocolates, specialty soaps, some flowers, a pie guy, a glass blowing vendor, I think I even saw a booth with veggies, a bakery booth with pastries, and a small band of local musicians playing Christmas songs. I thought it was just cool just seeing the community come together, regardless of how cold conditions have been lately. Well, there you have it! I would've given five-stars, but honestly I was sort of expecting more when you call something a "village". Maybe it hasn't snowed enough yet. Or maybe I was expecting it to be busier everyday around the area, but the good thing is, it's not. It is next to the MAX station, but really no heavy foot traffic. Support your locals folks, take your family out for some cheap skating fun, and happy holidays!

Great venue, wonderful fans that are eager to share what they know about the game and the point system, super welcoming staff & volunteers and spectacular teams. So much fun. You can grab a bite out back where a food truck is parked, wait in line for drinks or have them delivered. Buy your tickets online early because this event sold out. The energy of the crowd was awesome. The announcer keeps the spectators engaged with play by play in the fast moving arena. After the first period volunteers came out to race on tricycles keeping the energy hyped and engaged. Fantastic sporty and some very tough roller derby battles. Crushed it.

Its pretty easy to follow and wow does game play go by fast! Our friends try to get the VIP couch so we even got the full treatment which was neat. There are snacks at a pretty decent rate - hot dogs, nachos (which are crazy big and loaded!), sodas, candy and chips plus a beer/wine garden. Cash only so plan accordingly but their merch table can take cards and they have some pretty great merch. I loved the diversity seen here with age and this is a body positive zone with all different shapes and sizes - bravo!

If you're here for the sport, the ice is always fantastic; consistently solid and well-maintained, which is clearly why the Winterhawks use it as their practice facility. However, the rest of the facility definitely shows its age. The stands are nice enough, though they are located on the far side from the entrance, making for a bit of a trek if you're carrying gear. The lobby isn't huge, and the locker rooms are a tight squeeze, especially if you have a full-roster adult hockey team trying to gear up at once. On the positive side, you can tell they are making an effort to modernize. The lobby, locker rooms, and bathrooms have been renovated, which is a huge improvement over how they used to be. The staff is also very friendly and helpful, whether you're there for a tournament or just a public skate. It's a classic, "old school" rink that has its quirks but remains a reliable staple for the local hockey community.
