The Beet Salad with Pecan Crusted Goat Cheese was wonderful. The salmon was vey good althought the green beans were raw. I don't understand why they were not cooked to tender. I was as though they blanched them and threw them on the plate, also a starch such as a rice or potato would have made the dish better. We had a 4:00 PM reservation and the we arrived at 3:30, we we're then told they could seat us but we couldn't order until 4:00. I never heard such a thing and I was a little taken back that they didn't validate parking since we were patronizing their restaurant. read more

Good food, lousy service. Not only that, our waiter was very rude. After ordering the watermelon gazpacho from the specials menu, a runner brought over a New England clam chowder instead (which I can't have). Waited a while for our waiter to return and let him know it was the wrong soup, "Yeah..sorry." Waited a while expecting to get the soup I ordered, but it never came out so another member of our party asked the waiter if the gazpacho was coming out. The waiter, super annoyed says loudly, "I told you before, we are out, DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT NOW?". He never mentioned they were out before, and then copped an incredible attitude making it seem like we were in the wrong. I work in Princeton, had family in from out of state and decided to bring them here. It was embarrassing. Overall - If you want to take someone out for a nice meal, you can not go wrong here from a looks perspective. It is the type of place you go to when you want to impress someone. It is really good but not quite great. Food - Had the woodford mule and their standard mule, both ok, but have had better. For appetizer shared the calamari and onion rings, both fried foods so good but once again I've had better. For the main course had the chicken and tasted the steak, both really good but the chicken was a little dry. The steak was pretty good though, very bare, just a little butter on top and a dollop of blue cheese. Atmosphere - Very old school, wood everywhere and nice big tables inside with a sizeable bar. We almost skipped this place because of the poor reviews, but a local convinced us to ignore some of the criticisms on Yelp, and I'm glad we did. We came for Sunday Brunch at 1pm with 8 people. Upon entering, the place was so packed that I was afraid that despite our reservations they had not reserved a space for us, but in less than 5 minutes that had a large table put together. Some in our party were cold in the A/C, and the waiter quickly remedied the problem, pointed out the specials, took our drink orders and shortly thereafter, the food order. The brunch menu is creative, and went above the normal breakfast fare. The food came out quickly, everything was correct, and everyone enjoyed their food. The french onion soup was a nice starter, followed by the pulled short rib and eggs over fries (reminded me of poutine), Bread Pudding French Toast was a big hit. Lobster Eggs Benedict and prime rib benedict were a hit, and even the kids pasta was a big hit with our picky 12 year old. Waiter refilled my tea without having to be asked, and asked us if we wanted dessert before bringing the check. Second time coming here before a work meeting. The environment is welcoming and the service is amazing. The food was delightful. The carrot soup was well seasoned and tasty. Nov. 5, 2018: 12:01 pm I was seated by the host and given water by one of the roaming water bearers, waited for my server. 12:20 pm a nice couple was seated by the server at the table next to me and by 12:23 pm, their server had made her introduction and took their drink order - mine had still not made contact. 12:25 pm I make eye contact with the host who was passing by and when she finally acknowledged me to ask if I had seen my server, I told her no and she when off to find them, meanwhile the couple next to me has their drink orders brought to them and are ordering their meal before my server arrives! He finally does, I order and wait. 12:35 pm or so, my order arrives and I eat. I finish around 12:55 pm, cover my plate with my napkin and wait for my check. 1:10 pm, no check, the nice couple next to me have now finished their meal, gotten their check and waiting preparing to leave - I have see my server 5 or 6 times (he walked past my table TWICE) and still nothing. 1:16 pm I ask a bus boy to please send a manager over. The manager comes over, I tell him what happened, he apologizes and gets my check. When he brings it to me, I give him my card and pay, and he tells me thanks and sorry for the inconvenience. Very, very poor service and no real consideration from the manager - I will not be returning! I come here quite frequently with my family for Sunday lunch and for the first time I made it in for a Saturday night dinner! As always this place never fails me and everything always tastes like it's fresh off a fire grill and its aaaamazing. For dinner I we go the fried calamari and tuna martini both of which are super yummy! For entree we both got the red snapper special and it was delicious! Perfectly flame grilled with a slight crisp and matched with vegetables and sauces. The restaurant stay busy at all hours of the night as does the bar and that's because this place just doesn't disappoint! It's consistantly great meals and great service has always had me coming back and will continue to without a doubt! read more

so here's the deal: the food at Witherspoon Grill is definitely not bad, but it's nothing special compared to other options in the area (think Agricola, Triumph, etc) and in the price range. the menu is pretty solid, the drinks are pretty standard... nothing stands out much. they have a decent burger- $15. want a slice of cheese? add $1. want a tablespoon of caramelized onions? add $1. want four and a half tiny button mushrooms? add $1. see where i'm going? i hate when places do that. the bun on this burger is so dry and flavorless that i prefer to omit it entirely. the highlight of this place, and the reason i come back from time to time, is the outdoor seating. i love having a glass of wine and some decent eats while getting some fresh princeton air and people watching like a champ. read more

What the hell is wrong with Princeton? It's where large wallets and reasonable expectations come to die. Long a lament of the locals, Princeton, in spite of its' fame, wealth and (assumedly) discerning palates, has never celebrated an "oh my God" restaurant. One would think that P'town would feature a bevy of great restaurants - - not so. The mediocrty is baffling, and apparently The Witherspoon Grille got the memo that location and price alone dictates a restaurants' worth. Rather than navel gaze the details, let me say that every steak I've had there tastes like it was pulled out of a Shop-rite cellophane package and cooked with medium heat. They claim USDA Prime cuts - one would have to seach far and wide to find worse tasting (and cooked) Prime steaks. The apps and sides are uninspired, lacking even a moducim of value (or memorability). The most recent visit had us having to open our own wine (it ain't a BYO) and, the Oyster dish that we ordered was dropped onto the table with no explanation as to which was what. Simply, a restaurant charging what they're going for here should train their people better with an understanding that. just because they're in the heart of Princeton they don't need to get one over on their clientelle, which is a Princeton tradition. Company Dinner (So don't ask me how much it was). Ordered the dry-aged delmonico (still need to look up where exactly that cut is from) and the lobster bisque. Lobster Bisque: primarily tomato based, and pretty freaking fantastic. Delmonico: Medium-Rared, perfectly cooked... very tasty Wine: I had a glass of zinfandel and pinot (not sure which bottles were ordered), but they were both quite tasty... and the server provided a fresh glass without me asking when I asked to have a glass of our zin. Overall: Definitely on my list of casual, elegant (but not stuffy) steak houses to come back to when I'm back in the area. Side note: The hostess was quite awesome... I had forgotten to bring my belt on this trip (prob. due to me having to leave my place ~6am to catch my flight), so when I asked her what time Banana Republic (a couple blocks away) closed, she called (without me prompting her) BR to check on their hours for me. I've been going to the Witherspoon Grill for more years that I can count and always felt it hovered between 3 and 4-stars, but never 5. Although the food has always been generally good here, I would often question whether it was worth the high price tag. And while last night did nothing to move me closer to a 5-star review, I will say they delivered on a solid 4. Despite the bartender committing the big no-no of shaking my Bulleit Manhattan, it still came out tasty and without the dreaded ice chips. My wife absolutely loved her blood orange mojito, which even I'll admit was pretty darn good. And thank god for that because we waited at the bar for quite some time waiting for our outdoor table to finally open up. (You meet such interesting characters at a bar like this.) As it was a warm, gorgeous September evening, the place was naturally packed. The crowd trends older here, far more classy and sophisticated than you'll find up in New Brunswick. It's not necessarily my kind of crowd, as I am typically not classy nor sophisticated, but when I'm in Princeton I make my best attempt to play that guy on TV. Service was ok, though they needed some prodding along the way to keep things moving. When we finally got our order in, we were starving and had already made our way through one bread basket. I started with a cup of the New England Clam Chowder, which was on the specials menu. This was, without a doubt, the highlight of the meal. I am always on the hunt for an amazing chowder, and Witherspoon completely delivered. Hearty, rich, velvety broth, with melt-in-your-mouth potatoes and clams, deliciously seasoned, and just perfect for a cool, end-of-summer evening. While I gorged on chowder, my wife worked over a shrimp cocktail, which she enjoyed greatly. We then split a Caesar salad, which was decent but not memorable, before launching into the next round. My wife, the odd bird that she is, ordered a giant baked potato and a side of sautéed broccolini with garlic and called it dinner. The broccolini was delicious, if a little salty. I really can't understand why evil and bitter broccoli rabe must continue to exist and not just be formally replaced with broccolini. But I disgress... Trying to get back on the vegetarian bandwagon, I went with the asparagus-stuffed gnocchi, tossed in a lemony parmesan broth with chopped bits of asparagus and onion. It was very good. I was impressed with the soft, pillowy quality of the ricotta gnocchi -- clearly made in house. And although a bit on the oily side, the dish had great flavor and was quite filling. I would definitely recommend this entree for any non-meat eaters. We were far too full for dessert, but I did enjoy a nice double espresso for the annoying drive back to East Brunswick. And of course since we were dressed so nicely from dinner, we just had to make a pitstop at good 'ole Lory's Lakeside for a quick shot and a beer, because well, that's how we fly. (I mean, how I fly.) Witherspoon Grill is still worth keeping in the rotation, especially if the weather is nice and you can get a table outside. First time at this restaurant. Food was fine though not reason enough to return. Ambiance zero. Extremely noisy so if you intend to converse with your table mates eat elsewhere. Service was underwhelming, borderline inattentive beyond bringing the food. The on-site manager was unabashedly unconcerned about my issue with their policy of imposing a min 20% gratuity on our party of 6. Her feigned understanding was insulting. Offering to remove the charge barely concealed an obvious annoyance that I dared bring it up. And mind you it's not the amount of the gratuity but rather the presumptuously rude attitude it conveys, which is apparently shared by all from the owner on down as I received a consistent chilly reaction from both server and manager. Also, on top of it all we were informed that we had a 2 time limit. I've been around a long time and dined in hundreds of eateries both cheap and expensive on 3 continents. Never been given a time limit in which to enjoy my meal. So if you prefer to pay top dollar and find snobbery acceptable then by all means eat here. But if you feel your dining experience should warrant a little respect and attention then suggest you skip the Witherspoon Grill. I know I will. read more

Yikes. I was expecting a lot more from what I have been told is one of Princeton's better restaurants. This meal amounted to a lamentable steak surrounded by dismal sides and appetizers, all offered up by very amateurish, distracted service, and a front of the house that lost my reservation. Let's get right to it. The bread served up with much panoply, huge planks of something with an overdone, bark-like crust and a foam rubbery interior, was, to be honest, awful. I also don't get why snipping a few chives into butter, letting it get warm and possibly old, and then smearing it into a crock is supposed to impress me. Good bread and fresh butter beat rubbery bread and stale, oniony butter pretty much every time. My iced tea was no more second rate than most restaurants outside the iced tea belt, but honestly--iced tea is not hard to make at all, why should it be second rate in a high end restaurant? This was weak and slightly mildewy tasting. I ordered the tomato salad. It's September, tomatoes are peaking, New Jersey is supposed to be some kind of tomato heaven, I'm sure there's a farmer's market or produce purveyor who can give you the featured ingredient in your salad in some sort of ripe state. These were red but hard, acidic, flavorless, and mostly a plank on which to serve overly generous crescents of harsh onion. Too little cheese, cheap olive oil, third rate at best. On to the main event, a Delmonico steak with bearnaise accompanied by hash browns. The hash browns were a dense disk of shredded, fried potatoes of approximately Frisbee-esque proportions. They were fried and oiled to within an inch of their life, with no potato flavor remaining. My steak, which I ordred medium well, was more like well--charred to the point where most of the marbling had rendered out and it was mostly previously-tender meat held together by habit rather than any physical force. It tasted good in a "it used to be a nice piece of meat" kind of way. Maybe I should have ordered medium, but I usually find when you order medium you get medium rare and vice versa. Medium well gets me some good char and crust but moist and tender meat inside without too much blood. This was not pink anywhere. The bearnaise sauce was of the runny, dissolves into butter and vinegar variety. It at least tasted like bearnaise but I might as well have just doused my steak with tarragon and melted butter. I skipped a humdrum selection of desserts that you can find in any roadhouse around the country. I am not going with a 1-star on this because I think there are elements here that might have been decent on a better night, and I think I might be able to order better with practice. The question is, why would I? The sad shame of it all is that this operation wastesa great space with a wonderful patio area, which many restaurants would kill to have. read more

The portions were small, which is annoying considering the prices they charge. Even worse is the food had absolutely no flavor. Everyone I was with had a similar opinion. I am not a big guy, but I ended up grabbing something else to eat after leaving. I have eaten at Blue Point Grill, which is owned/operated by the same group. I should confess that I am currently sprawled out on the sofa in my hotel room, holding my tummy and making happy yummy noises. This is due to the fact that we wandered into downtown Princeton tonight and ate dinner at the Witherspoon Grill. The WG as the locals call it, is located next to the library in the quaint little town surrounding the famous university. Reservations are required for inside seating, but they have a nice covered patio space which allows for al fresco dining. Live jazz was playing inside so the ambience was quite nice, despite the oppressive heat & humidity. My business partner and I took our clients to dinner, and between the five of us we happily mowed our way through appetizers, steaks, chops, sides, and desserts over a leisurely evening. Our server was terrific, making many helpful suggestions, filling the glasses and bread basket, and enhancing the dining experience without disrupting our business conversations. I started with a cup of lobster bisque which was perfectly seasoned with nice chunks of lobster meat in the soup. That was followed by the dry-aged strip steak - seared on the outside for a nice crust, and then pink and juicy in the center. Creamed spinach for the side with a healthy dose of garlic. I'm not normally one for desert, but our server recommended a vanilla caramel ice cream sprinkled with sea salt which was made across the street at an organic sweets shop. The bill for the five of us was $250 which included the tip. Certainly not an outrageous cost for such a terrific meal. The restaurant is clean and the staff is courteous. We came in without a reservation and we were seated within the 30 minutes predicted. We ordered calamari which was absolutely delicious! Cooked perfectly with banana peppers and tomatoes drizzled with balsamic reduction which really made it amazing. While we were waiting for our entrees, we noticed that people were sat, and served their entrees and were onto dessert before our entrees had even arrived. Our entrees finally arrived and the first bite of my spinach ravioli was FROZEN!! Yuck! I noticed that they were stuck together but obviously they had all the time in the world to cook them. I don't send food back and the other side of the dish was cooked so I ate what I could. When I cook ravioli at home (even frozen) it only calls for 4 minutes in the water. Who knows what happened in the kitchen. If anything, we felt like an afterthought. Needless to say, our experience started strong but greatly disappointed with entrees. read more

Not a bourbon drink on the list, all too sweet sounding/girlie. (Steakhouse/grill with no Bourbon cocktail special?!? -weird) Ordered a couple of beers (Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale = yum and a Victory Hop Devil) btw. beers are $8 a piece... Waitress came out 3 times and said the beers would be right there, they were foamy and they would be ready "in-a-sec" What came out was two cold glasses, but the beer was warm. (maybe the reason why it was foamy?!?) Ordering dinner became painful. We saw the "split-charge" on the menu and are always wary of getting tagged with this lovely fee, we don't care to have our meal split in the kitchen... we are fine swapping plates, etc. We generally will get an entree and an appetizer. We ordered 4 oysters, a wedge/blue cheese salad and the Pork Special. Oysters came right out and were good. Salad was good too-steakhouse standard. Pork was tasty, but damn, it must have been just over a pound of meat. Little heavy on the mushroom/artichoke heart topping. - Garnish was a tomato wedge and a piece of curly parsley... really? Haven't seen this as a garnish since I dined at Denny's as a kid... More than enough food. I don't care if this is downtown Princeton or not, bottom line about this place is it is just a bit too much with the Ala cart attitude and pushing the "split plate". I get it, WG; really, I do! When you've snagged a prime location, offer charming patio seating, and only find yourself competing with Mezzaluna and the Alchemist and Barrister, it's easy to get cocky. Big bad steakhouse on Witherspoon kicks ass and takes names. Only, not really. I'll admit it, I'm a bit of a restaurant snob. Not a huge one, seeing as I don't live in Manhattan, but one nonetheless. I mean come ON, Princeton! You'd think a town as affluent and intellectual as this one could attract some decent restaurants. We have the market for it! So where the hell is the product? But enough neurotic ranting. Witherspoon Grill is decent at best. The host was very courteous and patient with me, as my party assembled later than I thought we would. He seated us right when we were ready and kept a smile on his face the whole time. I wish I could say the same for our server. He seemed grumpy - which could have been due to my request that he "please find our server" before I realized I was already speaking to him. Sorry, but it shouldn't take ten minutes for you to greet a table. Aside from the crotchety little waiter, I was distracted by crates and crates of dishes and glasses being maneuvered through the dining room on the way to/from the dishwasher. Either this was a major layout design flaw or the busboy just didn't care. The food was forgettable. I got the steak salad with my steak cooked "medium" which on Witherspoon Street must mean "well." I don't want to complain about the prices, because I find that annoying, it does seem that the quality didn't match the quid. If Jose Garces can offer a $9 burger with grass-fed beef that melts in your mouth, is a $36 sub-par sirloin really acceptable? On the plus side, the lobster mac-and-cheese was pretty tasty (though understandably heavy), and the crabcakes weren't bad. In short: A semi standout among Princeton dining. Moved to the main restaurant and our waiter was fantastic. Ordered the cheese special followed by the char and the delmonico specials. Went here for a group lunch today. Not bad, but not great either. It was just ok. Speed of service and meals was too slow in our opinion. Customer service was a little rude. Food wasnt bad but some things were clearly better than others. Their burgers and steaks were a definite hit. Salads and sandwiches got very mixed reviews. Appetirzers were limited entirely to seafood (which we didnt like) and they were just ok as well. I'd go back, but more inclined to try other places first. read more

For a few years now my wife and I have been going to Witherspoon grill every few months for a date night. It's always great service and good food. I have a gluten allergy and have never had an issue. The staff will gladly substitute items and when I told the staff I was disappointed a dish had gluten they spoke with the chef and determined a way to make it gluten free. Disappointed. The service greatly detracts from the entire experience. I took my sister here for her 25th birthday, just the two of us, and wanted to treat her to a great meal with great atmosphere. Upon arriving we were told there was a 20 minute wait, which was fine, and I left my name and went to the bar. My sister and I had a drink when we were taken to our tables in less than twenty minutes. Our waitress then came to our table and asked if we wanted anything to drink. My sister and I declined as our drinks from the bar were with us and not nearly finished to need to order a second round. Our server made a face and with attitude said she would get us menus. It was very off putting. Looking over the menu I decided I wanted a steak and fries while my sister, who is rather demure with a slight frame, wanted crab cakes. I said fine, I was treating and she should order whatever she wanted. She decided to go with the crab cake appetizer as opposed to the entree as she assumed she would not be able to eat a full meal of it, and then decided on a side of baked mac n cheese. In placing the order with the server, she again made faces and seemed almost frustrated with what we ordered. My steak and fries was not the most expensive item on the menu, but was on the entree list and my sister simply wanted a fulfilling meal she knew she would enjoy but not be overwhelmed by. The waitress seemed bothered she had to waster her time on our table!n Even upon placing orders for a round of drinks our server was not satisfied. The food was acceptable. My sister wholeheartedly enjoyed her crab cake but could eat but a bite of the mac n cheese as she was so full (she took the rest home for lunch the next day), the fries were tasty and my steak was overcooked for what I requested, but acceptable. For the most past, the atmosphere was fine, I suppose. I was able to overhear a few choice conversations from people sitting around. But the service was completely off putting. I am often frustrated by this when I dine in Princeton, where for some reason the wait staff thinks they are above the people they are serving, or something. I do not understand. Despite this, I am glad to say, my sister greatly enjoyed her night out in Princeton for her birthday. Would I got back to the Witherspoon Grill? Perhaps after some time has passed in the hopes service improves, but in the mean time I will enjoy the better options in Princeton and the greater Mercer County area. read more

Ok, so I'm all set to give this place three stars (I can't remember the last time I gave something a higher star rating than the average on Yelp), but this place is alright. Maybe it's the fact that there are so few good places to eat in Princeton, but I'll go with a mild four star rating. I had dinner here with some friends from town and we were all pretty impressed wit the steaks (which are all Prime). Maybe it was the couple bottles of Jordan Cab, but I can't remember the last time I had a more flavorful fillet at a reasonably priced joint. As far as the starter, I had the lobster bisque. Skip the bisque. It's fine...and that's about it. I don't know why I always expect soup to knock me off my feet (it has only happened once), but this one is what Progresso would make if they make a lobster bisque. However, the sides were all good (asparagus, mashed potatoes, onion rings, etc.), so Witherspoon had that going for it...which is nice. One extra bit of flavor, not that this slants my food rating, is that I did get the phone number of some guy eating at the table next to us. Not that I'm going to do anything with it, but it's always nice to be in a mixed atmosphere when all you expect is desperate housewives. (Oh, is that show on now? Maybe, I DVR'd it.) read more
