Mr. X and I recently traveled to Princeton for a convention, and were quite pleased to find this historic restaurant that opened in 1927. We had a little time to kill so we stopped in for breakfast, which was great! I had a three egg omelet filled with bacon, cheddar cheese, and tomato served with delightful delicate, thin sliced hash browns. Mr. X had a very interesting thing called a "One Eyed Jack"-- it was 2 thick slices of brioche french toast with a fried egg dropped into a hole in the center of each slice, served with butter and syrup on the side. Tasty coffee with free refills accompanied by wonderful friendly service. Spotlessly clean men's room. This was a five star experience for both of us-- and you all know how hard it is to please Mr. X! Highly recommended, right near Princeton University and the square. read more

The seating was plentiful and comfortable when we were there on a weekday morning. I was surprised it was not more busy. Coming here during the holidays with the festive decorations provides a great We came here for lunch with friends this past Saturday. The food was fine. I was a little disappointed with my Open Face Turkey sandwich, as it was more like deli meat than fresh carved turkey. My friends had the Club Sandwich, Pastrami Sandwich, and the Benedict. For the food offerings, especially breakfast items, the prices seemed high. But, this is Princeton. My overall experience is at 3.5. This was one of the worst chicken sandwiches I've ever eaten. It was battered not breaded which would've been nice to know, the chicken was dry, bland, and I got a weird chewy bite. The mozzarella sticks were very average diner sticks. The service was also bad, one of the people I went with asked to switch their side to onion rings 2 minutes after ordering and the guy just said no and walked away no explanation or hey let me check just no and gone. We came here on a Saturday afternoon after walking around the Princeton area for a bit. Since this is diner, we figure that it would be pretty standard diner food at pretty standard diner prices, but we were unfortunately wrong. I got the Hotel California burger with fries on the side - the burger was mediocre at best, it was supposed to also have garlic aïoli and it had none; the fries were OK, but not very crispy. We got mozzarella sticks for an appetizer and they just weren't good, the marinara was very salty and the sticks weren't as cheesy as other places. What I think makes this place deserve a one star (and I'm giving it to simply because the burger was only OK) is the service. The waiter we had was very rude and condescending. We asked to switch the fries to onion rings right after we had gotten our order taken, and he gave us a flat out "No" when we knew he hadn't even taken our order back to the kitchen yet. He never asked what we wanted to drink so we had to call him back again to order that. I understand that working in a client facing role can be hard and take a toll on people, but I do feel like you should make the customer feel like they are wanted in your establishment and that is not how we felt. The restaurant is fairly big and it extends all the way to the back so there's a lot more seating than what you can see from the window. The chairs, though, were very low in comparison to the table, so we couldn't really put our arms on top of it, which made dining very uncomfortable. read more

I thought this was very good. I had the3 egg omelette special that comes with 3 fillings choices (I opted for turkey sausage, smoked salmon and spinach) and multigrain toast on the side. Pretty good portions and a nicely done/tasty, so it is a good deal. I tasted my kid's blueberry pancakes and they were delicious. My wife says she has been here three times and never had a bad meal. And as others have said, the coffee is excellent. It's an old establishment and very bright white lighting and decor. Attentive service. read more

Had a late lunch at the Nassau Diner yesterday, and it was delicious! With diners rapidly disappearing, the Nassau Diner manages to keep the best parts of a "diner" without the drawbacks. Bright, clean, welcoming, the atmosphere is great. The desserts tempt you as you enter, and we were warmly welcomed. The menu is varied, with something for everyone, without the overwhelming menu you might get in an old school diner. Breakfast always available! Prices are not too bad, you ARE on Nassau Street in Princeton, after all. I had Vegetarian Eggs Benedict. It was delicious. I have never had a more perfectly cooked egg. Came here for dinner with some friends. The gorgeous, spacious interior made me feel like I was in an old fashioned soda pharmacy. Absolutely stunning interior and a cozy yet upscale atmosphere! Since we came on a Wednesday night, it was practically empty alongside a few other diners. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. I opted to go for the turkey club that was served on multigrain bread. It was a good serving size, very filling, and I did enjoy the taste. The fries were perfect. My friends wanted breakfast for dinner and they each got a stack of pancakes which they both really enjoyed. I feel like for diner food, it is more expensive than usual compared to other diners in this area for about the same quality. I think being that it's in downtown Princeton in a more upscale diner space is probably what makes it higher priced than most diners. However I enjoyed the food and atmosphere and I think it's a nice addition to the town. Perfect place for my friends and me to catch up. Next time I'd love to try a milkshake or cake! read more

3.5 stars We've been here several times now and while we still enjoy it, the initial excitement of the ultra modern old fashioned diner wore off. I've been ordering the Jersey breakfast each time - and it's good - but I wish there are other menu items that interests me more. I've seen the omelets from other diners which stopped me from ordering the omelet. The omelets look like the smooth, thinned out kind. I prefer the thicker, eggier type. On our last visit, service lagged. On our first few visits, our waiter came by to refill our coffee as soon as our cup was halfway done. Where did he come from? Somehow, he was always right there whenever we needed coffee! This last visit was a different story. We had to flag down our server multiple times for coffee. I know they're busy - the diner was full- but we had a very different experience previously. read more

Love the interior design. Our waiter was friendly and we got our food pretty quick, even though it was the lunch time rush on a Wednesday. My chicken steak tasted good, it reminded me of a fried pork chop. Had a nice fried crisp to it. Eggs were cooked perfectly. The breakfast potatoes were very buttery. My friend ordered the Israeli Breakfast. The Israeli salad that came with her meal was delicious. The olives in it were fresh and not extremely salty. First time at diner and was greeted nicely by host "cesar" and was seated . once at table we waited for a server and took quite a long time. my husband had to wave down a waitress to get our order, she came to our table very annoyed. The food was good, but would not go back with such a cold environment. The other women servers looked miserable and ignored tables. The only thing that was realized was that the eggs were served on top of the hash. The hash was a huge disappointment being mostly potatoes with specs of pastrami. This is kind of an upscale diner. There were interesting themed entrees. NJ pork roll, Scandinavian breakfast, brioche with eggs inside, along with diner staples. Was excited to see they had milkshakes, so I went up to the counter to see the posted menu. There were also fresh juices. Felt kind of dumb when a waiter came by and said that the menu was also on the table (it was in the center of the table, kind of where restaurants would generally put specials). I live in Princeton, but I've passed by The Nassau Diner time and again since it opened three years ago. I told myself myself that a diner in Princeton couldn't possibly measure up, but everything was outstanding. The menu offers choices you won't find anywhere else and the coffee is refreshingly NOT Small World roast that so many residents and visitors like--it's better. Tastes like they grind the beans. Also, my waitress, Yendi, was really lovely, which is why she got a larger-than-normal tip from my business associate and why I'm writing this review: she'll get a free meal from the owner. We have eaten at the Nassau Diner 50-60 times in the years since it has opened. It is sparkling clean (especially the restrooms), and quiet enough for easy conversations. The various dishes are modest but carefully prepared with fresh ingredients. Service is prompt but not over-fast --- you never get the sense that you are being rushed for the next cover. It is not meant as haute cuisine, but for what it tries to be it is first rate. read more

First of all the service was and the tropical paradise was great! The food on the other hand, not so much. We started with the onion rings and the batter was like a tempura batter and they were meh. I was hopping they were breaded like most places.I had the Ruben and it was made with corn beef that tasted like rubber ; possibly microwaved. My husband had the cheesesteak and the American was not copper's American so the was a little bit disappointing. We will most likely not return. I want my hash browns crispy, not curated (a hollow, throwaway word if there ever was one.) This gilded-age snow globe is pretension personified with expense account pricing and portions small enough to elude my monocle, all tethered to service that can best be described as curiously uncurated. So, in the meantime enjoy your bespoke muffin basket while I'll be slumming it on Route 1 where the hoi polloi play and the greasy spoons dance the Nutcracker. Two stars with extra starch. The good- we were seated right away on a Saturday morning! Coffee was amazing! Food was good. We got an omelet and the kids got French toast. The down side is the service - firstly they had two booths available and wouldn't let us sit there because we had kids. The server took our order and didn't check on us once after that. We had to hunt down someone to get ketchup & napkins. No offering of more coffee or anything else. This place has great potential and a cute diner feel. We left disappointed ! I appreciate any restaurant that sells burgers in Princeton, so I was excited to try out The Nassau Diner, only to come out of it slightly disappointed. I got the Cowboy Burger (bacon, onion rings, barbecue) and found it interesting how they had two patties. My friend ordered the California Burger (avocado, garlic aioli) only to get a classic American Burger, no avocado nor garlic aioli. She was able to get the avocados after asking but they had ran out garlic aioli. Both of us also ordered milkshakes, which were pretty hefty considering they were only $7. However, they were extremely heavy on the milk. I got the Coffee Truffle which tasted more like chocolate milk. My friend got the Caramel Pretzel which tasted like milk with mint? Seemed like they didn't clean their blender properly before making her drink. Fortunately, she didn't have any allergies, but this is something to be aware of if you are food sensitive. Overall, I suppose it is like a diner experience where the food is average and the service is slow. As for the physical restaurant, it is huge and would definitely be great for a family get-together, so long as you're not trying to impress them with the food. read more

The staff are all very friendly, very helpful, the waiters and the hostess all great. We were there for lunch and took our time catching up and never felt rushed. The food was delicious. The location was pretty nice and more upscale than you would think for a diner. We love diner food so we thought this going to be a treat. The breakfast had interesting options with international flair, but I wanted some biscuits so I ended up w the southern breakfast. Ugh. The biscuits were hockey pucks. I had trouble getting my knife into them. Even with gravy they were hard as rocks. The corned beef hash was also not a hit. The staff felt pretty bad about the food (they asked how it was and o told the truth) and asked for a second chance when we come back to town. It's was pretty bad so I'm not sure if I want to until I see good reviews posted here. read more
