Not being able to talk to a real person. Being disconnected countless times. What is up with waste management for Oakland.

If Waste Management wasn't a monopoly, we'd have a different trash company. There services are pathetic. Customer service sucks. Route and Regional Managers do not return phone calls. Escalating claims never go anywhere. Weekly, we have to call and complain about our trash cans being dumped in the street, when removed from the sidewalk, as directed to place them. Trash cans are constantly laying on their sides in the street, and debris is left all over the street. The garbageman does not clean up HIS mess, and phone calls to Waste Management, yield no results. If no one else complains about the driver, they won't do anything. Its not just my house. Cans and trash are left in the street in front of several neighbors houses. Some times the driver puts the trash can in the middle of the entry to our driveway (or our neighbors), making it impossible to pull into or exit the driveway without hitting the can. A person in my home is a Disabled Adult, and collects the trashcans after pick up. We have asked Waste Management to leave the cans on Level ground, where we place the cans for pick up, so that the disabled person can easily retrieve them without injuring herself. If the dumpster arm can retrieve the can from the curb, why can't it put it back on the curb where it got it from? Triced recycling NEVER has an issue with their can or driver. A Waste Management representative told us we could have a backyard trash pick up, which would mean the driver has to walk down the driveway to pick up and return our cans. They stated this service is for disabled individuals. Sounds great, right? Wrong! They will only perform this service for a fee of (at the time) $30! This company is a joke! read more

I called an extra pick up for a 3 yard bin, I was quoted $422!! Seriously?! Okay whatever...I schedule it b/c I have no choice. Next day I get there in the afternoon it was not picked up so I called it. Their system said it was picked up at 5:30am, thankfully we have cameras! So it was rescheduled for the same day and no one came. Let's hope I don't see $422 on my next state for someone not showing up. This week they started something new, after picking up the garbage they leave the bin in the middle of the parking lot, blocking the driveway so no one can get in or out! In early November I opened up my Waste Management envelope to find that my Quarterly Bill had gone up by 45%. Merry Christmas and Happy Recession! The only note on the Invoice was a brief paragraph that mentioned that the Albany City Council had passed the increase (just 2 weeks prior) and more details would be coming. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I like things like fair warning, clear communication, transparency, and details on why? However, in my many years as a home owner, I've never found that to be Waste Management's strong suit. There's also the "Revenge Factor", best manifested by a few weeks of garbage that was not picked up after I had the "audacity" to call in a complaint about all those garbage trucks that block the street on Monday morning. But after I sat on the Bill for a few days, I called Waste Management anyway, and later the City of Albany. I respect City Staff and I knew I was in good hands when she told me that I should interrupt her explanations at any time. My Bill isn't going to change, but what I received was a full nuanced explanation, an apology for a poorly considered roll out, and a good idea of what I was now paying for (even though I don't want some of those services). And short of ordering a really tiny garbage can (to reduce costs) and dump the excess in Recycle (just kidding), what was I going to do anyway? As for my Waste Management call? I knew this was a waste of time starting when the Customer Service Representative said: "Let me pull this sheet of talking points". What followed were 3 Lies and 1 Threat. The 3 Lies involved misstatements that there had been no increase (including CPI) for 10 years, that Waste Management was just following orders from the City of Albany, and that this price increase was necessary to improve customer service and satisfaction! The Threat came when I suggested that I would pay the old bill amount and withhold the increase until I got a better explanation. The Rep quickly told me that if I chose to do so, they would immediately initiate collection agency proceedings and notify the credit agencies! What's next I wondered, a horse's head in my green waste bin? I went ahead and reported that one to the City and braced for another long service experience with this Thug Utility Monopoly. read more

Still sucks. No trash pickup. At least this time they didn't insist with zero evidence that their drivers are always right, but the result is the same: my trash isn't picked up. I keep calling customer service and being told the drivers are coming but claim my can isn't out. It's been out since Sunday night, like it is every week. Apparently the drivers now frequently take a photo to prove they've come, but none of the drivers who claim to have come by my house have. So either the drivers are lying or going to the wrong house. Not sure which is more ridiculous. Now I've had to take and email photos of the can sitting outside my house to prove it's there. I see no point in paying for a service I'm not getting, so am planning to file a BBB complaint to get my money for the week refunded. read more

As a customer and consumer of Waste Management services, I have never had a problem with these folks. For some mysterious reason, empty trash cans and green bins disappear from my driveway periodically - or a wheel breaks off. Waste Management is absolutely stellar in getting things fixed or replaced - always within a week. Our regular guy who picks up the trash does a great job - he never leaves garbage on the streets and is really good about taking everything, even when the bins are pretty damned full. My chief issues are, at this point: - I wish that Oakland would recycle soft plastics like plastic bags and air bubbles that all bear the triangle recycling symbol on them. - I wish my neighbors in adjacent homes would be better about sorting their trash - I see so much food waste in the trash bin headed for the landfill, and recyclables in the trash - it breaks my heart - I wish people with dogs would NOT insist on putting their dog poop into my green bin - it's not for human or animal waste, use the brown bin - I wish there was a good waste solution for animal and human waste - I feel like the chief export to landfill from my duplex is baby diapers and cat poop - I wish Waste Management could do something about that! read more

I pay my garbage bill promptly. Half the time, I never receive a garbage bill, online or in the mail. Then, I receive an enormous bill, with a late fee added to it. I pay that bill, they cash the check, then next month I receive a bill for the same amount with an additional late fee. My check was cashed last month. So now I'm stuck trying to contact these trolls during my working hours. Waste Management is a total waste of my time. Worse service ever. read more

Waste Management is a vast bureaucracy. if ur trash doesn't get picked up on time, the "operater" can call the trucks to go pick it up if they are still on their routes. if it's a holiday, it will be a day to two later. i love the days when they will pick up anything (kitchen sinks, beds, computers, etc.) saves me a trip to the dump and some $$. don't know what days they are. when the neighbors start piling up their junk on the sidewalk, i take out my junk too. I'm on hold with WM right now. It's the 7th time in 3 weeks that I'm calling about the same issue, my X-mas tree is sitting on the street weeks after my next door neighbors' tree was picked up. It's getting lonely out there. Every call it's the same thing: "Tree cut into 5 ft max pieces?" Yes "Any lights or ornaments?" No "Is it flocked" Hell No!! "Hmm. Don't know why it wasn't picked up. There are no notes from the route drivers . . . " I am the only house on a short dead-end, but the tree's in plain sight from the main street, if they bothered to look. On Friday the supervisor said she personally scheduled a special Saturday pickup with the route manager before she talked to me so sorry for keeping me on hold for so long. Sounded good at the time, except it's Monday now and nothing happened over the weekend. Oh wait, it's Sara the supervisor again. Apparently there were "truck issues" and she promises they will pick it up tomorrow . . . hmm . . . where have I heard that before?!? And as a final joke, at the beginning of the call the automated voice said to "Press * at the end of the call to take a brief survey so we can improve our customer service." so I pressed star again and again and got nothing. Abysmal service. They just raised our bill 30% and ever since, they have been sloppier and ruder than ever. I have a lot of respect for the folks that pick up our trash, when it's done right. They consistently leave behind garbage either in the can (emptying it half way) or leave the whole can. One week they took our can with them and didn't give us another waste container until we called three times and threatened to go to the city council here. I'm disabled, it's the holidays and I have limited income, so it's not like I can just afford to have someone come over here and pick up extra trash and bring it to the dump, and I shouldn't have to, being it's the most expensive garbage "service" I've ever paid for. Phone reps seem to be brain dead or don't get that garbage sitting outside in a drought means lots and lots of critters and ants, again, stuff I am physically and financially unable to deal with. They keep saying "Yes, we have a record you called. I left a note for the supervisor". NO follow up, no results. Just keep taking my money. Garbage pick-up comes at the crack of dawn with a bunch of rowdy guys playing the radio at top volume at 6 in the morning; cans left willy-nilly all over the street/ blocking driveways, wherever they land. Now my spouse feels they have to go out and supervise them to make sure they actually take the garbage. Today I wrote the CEO and sent a copy to the mayor. I live off Forest Hill Ave and I've seen the trash and compost guys check my bins NOT on the street just to make sure I didn't forget to put them up there. Which I do. Often. Today, after being late to pick up my recycling for the 4th week in a row (2 days late) I received a notice that I didn't properly bundle my recycling boxes. A thing I have been doing for 5 years and WM has always taken. After calling & being threatened with a fine (one that they cannot legally charge) it has come to my attention that they will only take my extra recycling if it's bundled with twine or rope (NOT RECYCLABLE) and put next to the bin and not on top of the bin. You know, I've never thought of writing a review for Waste Management, because, quite frankly, I don't give a lot of thought to what my trash collector does. Every three months I pay bill, and every week they collect my trash. But the fact that they have been doing this for me for nearly 20 years with zero problems and zero complaints I think speaks volumes. On the rare occasion (three times in 20 years) that they missed my trash bin during collection time, I just called them up and the situation is rectified the same day or the next day. it's a dirty, and often times dangerous, job, and I'm grateful for the men and women who do it. read more

I have never been treated sooo unfairly over the phone or in person. I was jipped out of my yearly recycle pickup. I was asked by the various men and women there over the phone why this happened and it got down to me asking THEM HOW IT HAPPENED as it was without a doubt,their fault. This place is an absolute joke. Went to rent a 10 yard dump and was told the delivery would come between 800-1000 am and the delivery was never made. It was said that the driver showed up at 600am with never leaving us a note and never rang the doorbell, never knocked on the door, never bothered to call us to see if we where home. Just so called stopped by and took picture of the front of my house saying the area was blocked. Such horrible customer service and still had the audacity to charge me $75 . What a JOKE! Monopoly- that's the main reason their service is sulk. Why the minimum star is one in yelp, they aren't even worth. A new 1 yd dumper for business, they told me couples times wrong messages as a result of no driver pick-up, and they asked me to pay their mistake with "I don't care" manner - Excellent Service. I dealt with tons of complaints when working as the position of Admin Manager & Du Director, their policy/ attitude is the result of Monopoly. - They told me Wednesday pick up (I asked at least 2 times to confirm) & unlock it on Tuesday night, no pick up, ok, I called & they apologize and said it should be Thursday from 3am to 6pm, ok fine, I requested that can they made after 5am if possible? They answered yes & marked notes & 100% confirmed it's no problem at all. (Look great, don't trust them, it's a trap). - on Thursday, my baker open the lock at 4:50am & still no pick up, at 8am, no pick up, called again, they said the driver stopped by at 4:08 am and it's lock. I told them politely what's the info they gave & also invited them to listen again the recording, the guy said will definitely send the truck back today or tomorrow- thank you. (Finally this is NOT the case) Called back - useless reply xvvghxdggvhhdh........ which is "we don't guarantee ". 9 times calling in 3 weeks about abandoned bins in front of my business. Each time they say they will get it removed. It has yet to happen. I spend way too much time out of my day calling them. Why the City of Oakland didn't go with another garbage service provider is beyond me. Our service is on Thursdays, so every Wednesday night, it's my routine to put out trash and recycle when I get home from work, and they pick it up on Thursday. So when they missed our recycle pick up yesterday, no big deal, I figured I'll just call them and they can pick it up on Friday. What a pipedream! For starters, the customer service lady was pretty useless. She explained to me that the driver noted 'not out' on his notes which meant nothing was on the sidewalk for him to pick up. huh??? That's funny b/c the trash was emptied. She said she can make a request note to the driver for a special pick up, but they don't have to come out if they don't have time. Waste Management has destroyed the green can and the trash can. The green can lid is half torn off with broken hinges so is useless as it now fills with rain water and the trash can bottom is ground off until it flaps so stuff falls out, big stuff, all over the street. Have set up 4 DIFFERENT APPOINTMENTS and they have FAILED every time. Now the service line is dead. Nobody answers. Whoever manages the recycle (Gray) can was out here in ONE DAY. Waste Management provided the worst service today and I wish I could go elsewhere for garbage service. I scheduled a bulky pickup for today so I put out somethings thinking when I get home it would be gone. However when I turned the corner there was a pile still in my driveway. I called and was told that the things needed to be bagged up. I will post pictures to show that the things that needed to be bagged is bagged and the customer service rep could not explain why the driver did take the things. So now I have trash in my driveway and they're not coming back until next week. I'm just going to have pay someone else to come haul it away. read more

This is the second week that I have placed my green can out for pickup and the driver has not picked it up. It's horrible that you pay for a service that has recently gone up and still have to deal with such incompetence in a service that you pay for. I contacted Coucilman Larry Reid's office to file a complaint because this has happened before and something definitely needs to be done about the service that's being delivered in our community that we as homeowners have to pay for. Waste Management of Alameda County has provided consistently lousy service from the moment Oakland Scavenger was privatized to "save money". Waste pickup in Alameda County (Oakland in my case) went from bad to worse AND got much more expensive. This national corporation (WM) acts like it "knows" that it doesn't matter what kind of complaint a customer makes - they can simply put a lien on the property if the customer refuses to pay. The cities and counties that are part of this collusion to extort money from residents are at fault here. They claim my gate is locked (which is never locked on Thursdays). Now they want to charge me extra to push the gate open! I already pay $250/mo! I probably had some food containers with some food stains in there and one with a little left over food and they can't pick it up. I wish there was another company, this is ridiculous. Regarding city of Oakland's Waste Management contract: Here's what you DON'T KNOW. For ONE UNPAID GARBAGE BILL, the city can put a lien on your home, evidently with no obligation to notify you. That lien will prevent you from refinancing or even selling your home. On WM's end, what a wonderful arrangement! WM has no bill collection costs or issues. Either you pay up or the city pays for you, and they slap on lien on the property. I guarantee you may pay up to FOUR TIMES THE ORIGINAL BILL by the end, or more. How? Here's what happened to me: Lost or forgot to pay ONE 2011 WM BILL of $61.89. City paid WM for me $61.89. WM then sends you next bill with zero balance; you're none the wiser what's going on. Cut to refinancing mortgage in 2016: Title search shows lien for $131.89 (how we got to this amt from $61.89 is not known). City says I must also pay $125 before they will allow me to pay off $131.89 lien. To wit, total is then $256.89, FOUR TIMES THE ORIGINAL BILL. Further history is: As property owner, I have lived in the same home for 20 or more years, with no other credit problems. I am NOT a deadbeat etc. Why hasn't city of Oakland notified me since 2011? Lien dept (238-7474) says there are "too many liens" to notify everyone. Really? That's your excuse? You always manage to bill me and receive payment on my property taxes every year. If anyone wants to check for these liens on line, go to acgov.org, find Clerk-Recorders Office. I'll try to update this review as I'm afraid it's possible the bill-padding with Oakland hasn't stopped with the story above. Just read another on-line complaint that mentions a $50 Demand Letter (what they call the hoop to jump just to have the privilege of paying lien off) and a $60 fee to remove the lien. That might then total me at $366.89, possibly SIX TIMES the original bill. Now I realize why they both love the arrangement: WM no bill collection; Oakland creates a new stream of income. read more

This is the worst garbage company in the world. The city of Oakland is allowing this company to make millions off of tax payers, for a shitty service. My experience with the bulky pick up confirms that this company is a complete "WASTE OF MANAGEMENT". The customer service people are polite and clueless. The companies customer service reps, don't have the ability to contact their own DISPATCHERS, to inquire if a driver has completed a pick up. I think they probably do have the ability, but I believe they do not want customers calling in and inquiring "WHERE THE DRIVER IS IN TERMS OF A SCHEDULED PICK UP". Waste MANAGEMENT conveniently side steps any issues concerning the failure of their drivers, not picking up BULKY PICKUP AS PROMISED AND SCHEDULED. The bulky pick up team who where scheduled for pick at my home ........LIED..........When my bulky pickup was "NOT PICKED UP 2 days in a row, I called in several times and demanded to speak with a supervisor. The supervisor told me that the driver had indicated on his pick up work ticket, that there was NO, bulky pick up in front of my home. He LIED..........!!!!!! I explained to the clueless supervisor, that the regular route garbage pick crew had picked my garbage and the recycling waste. I explained that my bulky pick up stuff was between the garbage can and the recycling can and that she could check with those two drivers, to confirm that there was indeed bulky pick up stuff in front of my home. The supervisor, couldn't explain the reason her driver LIED...!! Oakland has to do better....... This company does not deserve to do business anywhere..!!
