I would have stuck with one star, but the extra star is for the friendly people on the phone the first time I had a poor experience. We pay quite a bit for our trash pick up, since we are a business. Our first incident was when our trash can disappeared the same morning as our trash pick up. I called and was told that they hadn't taken our trash can, and that someone must have stolen it. They were supposed to bring a new can the following week. Three weeks passed, and no trash can was ever brought. I was told I could put a bag on the street, which I did, but storing all of our garbage inside week after week was terrible. I felt like a crazy person having to call again and again asking for my trash can back. There was one gentleman, I believe his name was Dave, that was very nice and joked with me. Otherwise, just excuses from everyone else and no real resolution. Then this morning, at 7am, we go out front to bring our trash can in and there is a bag on the ground and trash blowing down the street. My employee called WM, who said that there was "no way possible" that they had dropped a bag from in the can, and even said it must be a homeless person that took our trash bag out of the can and dumped it in the street. She told him that for a fee, they would come back out and clean up the trash. So watch out for the homeless man that goes around this neighborhood emptying trash cans onto the street and then stealing them. The immediate first reaction is deny, then blame someone else. Talk about a joke. I have now officially rescheduled my bulk pick-up for the fourth time. Scheduled the original bulk pick-up a week ago (you need to call a week in advance for bulk pick-up) so I placed the items on the curb, as directed, the evening before for the possible early morning pick-up. Low and behold, nothing was removed from the curb because a car was parked in front of the curb. Um, hello? First of all, I live in Oakland, meaning there is essentially no curb space without a vehicle parked in front of it. Second of all, I doubled checked via when I made the original pick-up date during my phone call and was reassured that the curbside pick-up was acceptable (this is also a phrase that they actually advertise). Regardless, I was not notified as to WHY the pick-up did not happen and had to call and reschedule. When I called to reschedule, they claimed that I would have to wait another FIVE business days until they could do the pick-up. So, my bulky items would have to sit around for essentially another 7 days on the street. Unacceptable. I demanded a sooner pick-up and was told (since it was Friday) that someone would come to pick-up the bulky items on Monday. Guess what! NO ONE CAME. No update, no phone call as to why. When I called to see what the heck was up, no one could find evidence of my rescheduling. So - I had to reschedule AGAIN. They wanted AGAIN, to post-pone it another five business days. Absolutely not acceptable. The person on the phone then rescheduled for Wednesday after quite a snippy and angry conversation with me. Wednesday rolls around. Items are in the street as I had moved them for the non-existent Monday pick up. SURPRISE! THE ITEMS ARE LEFT IN THE STREET (which is now taking up a parking spot on a competitive street). I call Waste Management YET AGAIN. And after kicking and (not really) screaming but definitely being rude, I am able to schedule it for this Friday (TODAY). I am sitting in my living room and the garbage is STILL THERE. I called today right at 8AM (when they opened) and spoke to a man who was very rude and short with me (I was actually being friendly and to the point today). I was confirming that the pick-up was even scheduled to still happen today and asked that, if yet again, the trash could not be picked up, if I could receive a phone call explaining why the pick-up did not happen. The man proceeded to tell me that that is a regular protocol that they follow (BS - I have not received any sort of phone call as to why my bulky pick-up was not received in this entire week). I am crossing my fingers AND my darn toes and hoping that this bulky pick-up is actually PICKED UP. What the hell is the purpose of this company? I am appalled, angry, frustrated and annoyed. If I could I would give Waste Management negative stars for poor customer service, lack of attentiveness and clearly no consideration for my neighborhood. JOKE OF A COMPANY. What it does not tell you is all the additional fees they charge on top of everything. Don't ever try to take mattresses (especially a king as they charge twice for the box spring). It all started two weeks ago when my regular green pick up guy got sick and they put this new fool out to drive. This guy put my whole green can in the side of truck and wipe it out I was watching from my security cameras inside my home. When I can out he told me my can was broken dam fool didn't know I had security camera and I watch him put it inside. Why lie moron you should know by now some people are watching moron like you. At any rate this clown told me he would call in for a new can and that it would be out next week Well next week has come and gone and now its two weeks and NO green can why because WM doesn't have any. There out of green can what kind of business do they do? I had to call twice to find that out because the first CS person I spoke with didn't know her job like the fool in the tuck. So its going on three weeks and now but what they told me was I could buy some paper or plastic bag and sit them out. So why should I buy any thing when its part of the contact with WM for them to loan me a green can to put my trim. I'm paying for this service and they are telling me to buy something why. They must be crazy why am I paying you for something twice I want my service you want your money and I want to keep my money. Give out the bags if you don't have the cans you're not the only people who watches there money. Come July 1, 2013 they will up the price and even as I have not had a green can for two weeks. I wish Yelp had a "no star" rating. I realize that I have no choice in who I can pay for garbage disposal service. However, I still feel compelled to write a review on Waste Managmenet of Alameda County. My trash was not picked up on my scheduled pickup day. Why? I don't know. I called to inquire. Over a period of 4 days, I have called at total of 12 times, at various times of the day, hoping to reach a Customer Service person. After waiting on hold for 15-20 minutes each time, feeling like a complete dumbass, I try to leave a message. I get an automated message saing, "Sorry you can't leave a message, the voicemail box is full." I go online to their website to submit my question. Not only is their zip code serivce locator buggy, but the form submission is not working. Also, I tried to enroll in online payments and my account numbers aren't registering in their system. They can't even get account registration and login working... I won't be giving them any of my payment information for bill pay. I am going to file a complaint with the BBB. I suggest that anyone who has experience poor or unacceptable service do the same. I feel that it's the only way to maybe prompt the company to improve their service. read more

The effects of Alameda County Waste Management's negligence and slow response seem to be horribly effecting the community and environment. Their dumpsters are constantly left out for days with no pickup in park, and residential areas. A particular dumpster located across the street from a bird preserve in a private, residential and park neighborhood is not only broken several times a month and cannot be moved from the sidewalk (about 15 feet away from a major stop on a lot of birds' migratory patterns). The dumpsters, even after regular, daily calls, had not been fixed, moved, or removed. Residents in the neighborhood walk around the eyesore on the beautiful lakeside street, and protected birds in a BIRD PRESERVE wander across to pick at the wreckage of the neglected Alameda County Waste Management dumpster. It's sad to see such a negative effect on the community and environment, especially from a government agency whose mission it is to enhance those aspects of Alameda. This problem continues to persist after many complaints. If there was another, private waste management company, I think most of their customers would use it. It looks like, from Yelp many people share this opinion of Waste Management. Unfortunately, we can't discourage anyone from using this mandatory government agency. Is there a civil action group that can make a difference?? read more

I have been living in my home since 1998 and have been doing the bulky pick up every year. This year we had such an unpleasant experience with this company. The first time they came by they didn't take it because our car was parked on the street blocking the garbage, we understand and will take the loss. I called customer service and scheduled my second bulky pickup since the first time counted as one even if they didn't take anything. They came again and the driver refused to take our trash because the fridge was touching our driveway. He could've taken everything but the fridge but didn't. I called again and they had the driver come again. The driver refused to take the garbage again because he said the garbage was all over the place. I ended up taking my garbage to the dump after 3 weeks of struggling with this company. I ended up paying $50 because the driver was being lazy. Let me mention that one of the rules is no garbage on the street, my neighbors got their bulky pickup today and it was all on the street. This company is a scam!!! read more

Took 3 weeks and 5 phone calls to get my recycling bin fixed. I call, they'd tell me someone will be out to fix it, and it never happens. The route manager was suppose to call and follow up with me, never happened. I flattened, bundled and placed a bunch of cardboard boxes next to my bin as per instructions. They emptied the regular recycle and ignored the flat boxes. Reading the reviews here, I wonder if I should bother with bulk pick up. Their website don't even have a place to file a complaint. EMAIL them, instead of calling. I had similar issues of long wait times that went nowhere by phone. Surprisingly, I got an apology and help within 24 hrs by email. Within 2 hrs of the response, my missed trash collection was picked up from the curb. The next day, I got an email about my request to change trash container sizes and when they'd be substituting them. Phone was super painful and got nowhere. Email was super friendly and efficient. Since September 2016,I have had the most frustrating time getting the compost pick-up people to do yard service. 9 times out of 10 it doesn't happen; I call and report it and am told it will be picked up by 6 p.m. that evening or 24 hours later. 8 times out of 10 it is not picked up at all, and the compost collects and overflows my bin. To add insult to injury: while most of the people I report this too are polite and empathetic; occasionally, like today, there is a rude and care-less one. She told me it will probably need to wait until next week's scheduled pick up. No apology. I asked to speak to the route manager, who she said would call me back. Still waiting... I place the blame for Oaklands ILLEGAL DUMPING PROBLEM squarely in Waste Managements lap. The base fees at the transfer station are higher than anywhere else in the Bay Area-- and the total MORE THAN DOUBLES when you add the $20 "fuel service fee" PLUS the either $14 or 7$ "environmental surcharge"-wait! not done yet ! there's also the "regulatory cost recovery fee" ...All of these fees are IN ADDITION to the base rate. The same load that costs $53 to dump @ Waste Management's transfer station with their pissed off employees and surly attitudes can be dumped in SF or Berkeley for $26 bucks AND I'm greeted and well treated by smiling friendly folks. You suck smelly sofas Waste Management. No wonder every streetcorner in Oakland is littered with mattresses and refuse. Best of all? "Improperly set out" Bulky Trash Pickup items are SUBJECT TO AN $810 MINIMUM FINE!!! The service is great so far , the billing is horrible. I moved into a new home and I needed to pay for six months of service. So I activated ez pay on their website and payed in full. What did their system do? They triple billed me. Ez-pay? more like Ez- rob. I disputed the charges with my bank and they agreed with me so they declined the charges and credited my account. I called wm's office and they said I was all paid up and everything was fine on their end. I am only going to pay by check in the future-lesson learned. The last nail in the coffin was when I recieved a computer generated email stating my bill hasn't been paid because my bank declined it. Dealing with this company is nothing but a slew of missed pickups, overcharging, excuses and terrible customer service. The amount of dumpster volume they assign (and force you to pay for) is more than we ever need--as we have demonstrated over and over again--yet they stubbornly refuse to change our plan. They are not transparent with rules and guidelines. In fact it's like pulling teeth just to get a solid idea of what goes into which dumpster. When the rules change, they do so with little or no notice to the customer. But when a company has a monopoly on a specific service, I guess they can do whatever they want. While I have had no issue with the garbage pickup/service, the customer support and billing part of this company is HORRIBLE. They invoiced me incorrectly for a prorated period (charging almost double the normal rate) and it's taken hours of phone calls (over a month) for them to address the problem. I got different answers from each rep I talked to, completely avoiding acknowledgment that there was a mistake on their side. I was told multiple times that they were checking into it and would report back to me, but each time, I had to follow-up directly over the phone. The cherry on top was each rep insisting they have been providing correct information the whole time, and that I'm just not understanding it--including one rep telling me that she has only ever seen prorated amounts be higher than normal rates...so you don't understand what prorated means, apparently. Wish there was another option for trash service or I would switch immediately. Although I can take the financial hit until this credit is applied to my account, there may be many folks who could not and its really unacceptable that this is how a basic service is handled. read more

Horrible Service! I work for a big light commercial company and we have our trash and recycling through alameda county being that our shop is in alameda county. They consistently miss our pick ups and when i call and complain they will not come pick up that day saying they are done with the route already and will be pick up tomorrow. Well then the next day nobody shows up. I thought the problem was solved when they realized they did not put our new dumpsters on our account but fast forward to a few months later and here we are again. If I could give them a negative star, I will. Again, the issue for bulky item pick up. It says it's free, but it is not. For city of Oakland, the group 3 limit should be 9 ft by 3 ft by 3 ft equal to 3 cubic yard. However, even you are within this limit they would still bill you a 150 dollar invoice. So be careful for the bulky item pick up service, it is a fraud. read more

There is no list that I can find on what can go into a residential Green Bin but youd think a green bin is a green bin, and here is the only list that I can find on what can go in it: http://www.wm.com/enterprise/food-and-retail/Retail-Solutions/organics-recycling.jsp Waste Management leaves our street littered with Trash and refuses to pick up bins while not providing information on what can go in them. I got a notice that mine was contaminated, but it had only things on the list above, potting soil and milk cartons and other food waste... with a note saying no dirt (it is clearly potting soil not dirt). The person on the phone was unable to point me to a list online for residential green bins (but why should it matter do they have a business composting and separate residential composting area, I doubt it). read more

My garbage wasn't picked up this week although it was put outside the night before the scheduled date. When I called, they said that it wasn't there to be picked up on time. This is simply not true. I asked for a supervisor to call me back and she did and left a voice message letting me know that it would be picked up on the next scheduled date. Not acceptable, but I guess I am going to have to deal with it anyway. They are a business that gets paid to provide a service and it's very disappointing to see their lack of interest to correct their errors. I don't think we get a choice of who provides our garbage & recycling services, which is too bad. The collectors responsible for my street are amazingly unreliable or blind or both. I've lived at my current location for a little over a year, & they've missed picking up my garbage and yardwaste on separate occasions. When they didn't pick up my garbage, all my neighbors' cans were emptied, but not mine. So, I emailed & called, and even emailed my landlord (the account is under my landlord's name), suggesting that they refund the account for services not rendered. I was told that they would come by the next day to pick it up. Nope...I left my bin out (good thing we don't have anti-ugly type of laws like some of the richer suburbs do or that they aren't enforced), & it still didn't get picked up. I had to wait until the next week's regular pick up time. With yard waste, mine was the only one not emptied amongst my neighbors. I left the bin out for a couple days, then gave up, brought it in, then took it back out the next regularly scheduled time. I say unreliable because now every week when I'm coming home the day all the junk is supposed to be picked up, I'm just crossing my fingers & hoping that all the bins that I've put out on the curb have been emptied. Garbage collectors make 6 figure salaries, which is fine, because you couldn't pay me enough to deal with all that nasty smelling crap. But if you're going to be paid that well, go get your eyes checked, & please do a good job! read more

So check this. I got fined for not having garbage removal. So I got removal (if thats what you can call it). To get the city of Oakland off my ass. Thanks for the fine by the way. I'm not far from the Blvd. With that kinda coin, I coulda got a bj from one of those questionable hookers and some taco's. I recycle, repurpose, or compost everything I buy. that's why I didn't want WM services. Nor do I need them. So for $68 every 2 or 3 months. I get a 20 gallon trash can. These over paid truck drivers/trash men and women leave more shit over the street then they do putting into the truck collecting the trash. This is really typical piss poor attitudes of union workers. Lazy and careless. While I purchased a industrial dust pan with a long handle and broom, only to walk up and down the street after trash day to pick up after these trash collectors. I'd like to be reimbursed $75 for those 2 items and for my time doing this. If your not going to do the job right. Don't do it at all. A waste management driver nearly ran me over in the harbor bay club parking lot a few minutes ago. There is no reason to drive 30 mph in a parking lot. In general, these drivers should move slowly and carefully in towns such as Alameda where families are out and about early in the mornings. More training seems to be in order. read more

A few months ago, I called WM to request a larger grey recycling bin. The following week, on the day of my pickup, they took the old bin and left me a brand new, supersized bin - perfect. However, a few weeks later, I return home on pickup day to find my recycling bin MIA. Confused as to whether WM took it or someone walking down the street decided to wheel it away, I call WM to request another. After being on hold for at least 30 minutes, - listening to their hold messages incessantly reminding me that I can take care of this on their website (yeah, right) - a woman finally takes my call. I, with no trace of attitude whatsoever, tell her that my recycling bin has gone missing and, when they bring a new one, to please make sure it's the larger one like I had. She replies that there is only one size of grey bin for Oakland. "Um, no," I tell her, "because I had a small bin and a larger bin was delivered to me just a few weeks ago after I requested it." She insists that she's right - whatever, just bring me a new flippin' bin (which, she informs me, won't happen until my next pickup day a full week from now). One week later: no bin. I call back, waste another half hour on hold, etc., etc. Get this, when the rep pulls up my account, there's no record of my call from the previous week!!! OH HELL NO, that bitch didn't put in the order. Beyond irritated, I ask the rep if a bin can be dropped off tomorrow, being that 80% of my household trash is recycling. No such luck, I have to wait another full week (even though, really, my house is less than a mile from their yard). Yesterday (pickup day and supposed new bin day): I'm a little bitter but figure there's no way they're going to fuck this up again. They do. If their rates were reasonable, I might expect something like this to happen, but the monthly rates are exorbitant for the (lack of) service they provide. read more

If I can give negative stars, I would! The WORST company ever! Waste Management doesn't care about their customers! We have been their business customer for about 10 years and they have continued to increase their rates (from $250 4 years ago to current price of $500) and now are charging us for pushing the dumpster outside for pick up (they didn't before). Then, they will charge us $33 for a lock and key (Are you F#(!%$ kidding me?) On top of that, on a monthly basis, they will charge $55 to unlock my dumpster to empty the garbage! My review can be quietly summed up in this impressive tag line, found on WM's Website and fancy garbage trucks. It reads, "Together, Waste Management's landfills provide over 17,000 acres of protected land for wildlife habitats and 15, including the Hillsboro Landfilll, are certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council." This is great news. Now I am OFFICIALLY dissapointed that I went with my 100% Gas Powered Honda Fit. I was afraid that I would have no place to put my 32-pounds of Nickel when the poisonous battery goes dead after 5 years on the Toyota Prius I didn't buy. What a relief. Those nuclear batteries now have a final resting place, underneath Protected Wildlife Habitats. THAT IS WHAT I CALL RECYCLING. Who needs to reduce, when we can REUSE. I knew I didn't recycle for good reason. My carbon footprint remains Big AND Black. Thanks for making it even easier for me to be honest about it. I am just doing my part. read more
