Some of the best catfish I've ever had. Never ordered anything but catfish from this place. If you're on a diet don't make the trip from Memphis, it's about 20 minutes from East Memphis. Takeout is an option but it does taste better if you eat it right out of the kitchen. I've been here more than 10 times over 10 years and I've never been disappointed. There aren't too many places to eat in Rossville, either because the town is too small or Wolf River draws in most of the lunch crowd business. Wolfs River is an old school southern restaurant. Gravel parking lot outside is filled with pick up trucks, business vans and cars. Inside is kind of small, there is a counter with about six chairs and about 20 tables and booths inside. Place is slightly seedy and worn, the word "greasy spoon" comes to mind. Menu definitely had a southern slant to hit, fried foods (including catfish) barbeque, burgers and the classic meat and sides. I ordered the beef brisket with steak fries. My buddy ordered meatloaf with mashed potatoes and butter beans. My brisket didn't impress me much, kind of greasy and they skimped on the meat a bit. The steak fries were very good however as it appeared they used fresh potatoes cooked in clean oil. My buddy liked his meatloaf and potatoes, said it was like home cookin'. Pie was offered for dessert but we passed. Place was very full during lunch hour, mostly workling class people. Waitresses were nice, lots of banter with the regulars. Service is what I would call "relaxed", after all we are in the south. If you're a health nut or a vegetarian, this place wouldn't work but if you want southern style cooking, Wolf's will leave you satisfied. This place is worth a stop as it is the real deal. read more

Excellent old-fashioned cafe in the picturesque little village of Rossville. The menu has a variety of options, but on our visit we chose the catfish, which they only have on certain nights. It was possibly the best catfish I've had anywhere in the Memphis area. It came with hushpuppies and all the usual sides. The service was superb. The wait staff were friendly and focused. They appeared to like their jobs and to enjoy serving their customers. This place is definitely worth the drive. read more

One of the top three fried catfish places in the Memphis area - has plenty of black pepper and spices as is required for any real Southern recipe. They have a very good chocolate pie (stiff chocolate custard with lightly sweet meringue) that a local lady makes for the restaurant. It is worth the drive if you've never been. read more

I had hi hopes for this place. The pictures of the breakfast looks good but my food was gross. I had a breakfasts sandwich egg cheese and bacon on a biscuit how can you mess this up. If I had to guess it was all frozen. I don't even know where to start with the hash brown what I got looked like a pop tart I tried the hash brown and it was so greasy I could not eat yuck. the biscuits and gravy where bland. Great find while driving outside Memphis. Small local place with great southern feel. Waiting for our lunch, we were served a basket of hushpuppies and pickled tomatoes which were both great. I had catfish that was seasoned and fried maybe the best I have had. My daughter had the hamburger which looked popular and ate every bite and said it was really good (which from her is exceptional). If you want good home type cooking, this place might hit the spot. I always get their 5 piece catfish plate and two sides. I have been there at least 6 times and one once I was disappointed in the food. On that day, the food cmae out warm and not hot. With catfish you want is crispy. I think they were busy that day and they let my food stand for a bit. Other than the good food, the people who work there are awesome and friendly. First time in 70 years I ate fried catfish without hushpuppies. I have been here many times, but this was less than a great experience. Waitress brought 4 hushpuppies for 6 people. These are brought like other restaurants bring bread just after you order. When the food was brought, we asked for more hushpuppies for the two who had ordered catfish, but we never got any. Waitress responded to the request by saying something like "if I can get/find some'" Tried several times to get her attention. Since the catfish and hushpuppies are served on certain days, you would think the place would be prepared. One in our party wanted dessert. Could not locate waitress, and I said "forget it, they probably don't have it." I asked the others about the check and then saw she had laid it on the table. When does a waitress bring a check and fail to ask whether you want desert? The chicken tenders were actually chicken fillets, very large but pale for fried chicken, looked pre-fried and warmed. read more

Rossville is a veritable food desert. Wolf River Cafe is the only real choice and i have been there two times in the last 2 years. While famous for their catfish (which I have had before an found to be unremarkable) this time, I opted instead for the BBQ, having noticed the pit visible from the dining area. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich and I am sad to say that Wolf River is a huge fail on the BBQ. Almost tasteless. The first time I have ever experienced that problem with pulled pork BBQ. Then there is the cole slaw. I was expecting more than mass produced cabbage from a big distributer. Walmart would reject this stuff! Bland, except for a somewhat chemical aftertaste. Even though I didn't order turnip greens, I did see them delivered to s nearby table and the coloring was definitely off from that of fresh. Also, they were chopped in small pieces....typical of canned or of a low quality. Anyone who has prepared fresh food knows the real from the canned upon sight. The dessert I tried was alleged by the friendly waitress to be "homemade" and that is why I selected it. "Lemon icebox pie" ...an old south favorite. It was actually not bad but that could have been due to the contrast with the relatively flavorless BBQ. The pie was apparently a concoction made from condensed sweetened milk. I don't think the flavor was even real lemon, but will give credit for a meringue which was almost perfect in presentation. I would rate this place as less than average if it were a chain but I have a heart for small privately run operations, so I will say it is marginally average. I would never advise anyone make a dedicated trip to Rossville simply to eat here. read more

I travel for work and eat in 5-star restaurants all around the country. My favorite restaurant is still the Wolf River Cafe. I've been eating there for 20+ years. My wife's a great cook, but I always tell her if she passes before I do, I'm moving closer to the Wolf, as I'll take all my meals there. Good food and friendly staff. The nights they have catfish they only give you half the filet but the don't tell you when you order it so be aware. Love this down home cafe in Rossville! My family has come here for over 20 years....always on Friday nights...always for that amazing catfish plate. It's like going back in time to drive out into the country to Wolf River Cafe. Also the prices are shockingly high for what you get. I have watched the prices skyrocket over the years as the popularity of the restaurant has increased.
