Have had this placed bookmarked for a while due to their cake looking scallion pancakes. We went on a hike up the peninsula and on the way home stopped in downtown Milbrae to hit this place up. We ordered by the window and paid in cash. Was told that it'll take approximately 20 minutes. Asked how she would know its us. She said she would remember and she did. Green Onion Pancake $13 - What we came for. Came with 6 thick cake slices. The pancake itself is very fluffy and a bit bland but delicious with their "godfather's sauce." Will be enjoying the leftovers for breakfast tomorrow. Godfather's Noodles $14 - Seems like a crowd favorite so we ordered it. It was a hit and my husband's favorite. Not too spicy but with a kick. Even I can handle it. Cilantro Beef $ 17 - Another popular dish. It was very flavorful but not spicy like the other two dishes. I have never had anything like this before. The cilantro added a very interesting twist. Would order again. We asked for forks/chopsticks and we ate outside on the sidewalk. The food was really good. Wished we lived closer. This was a great meal mainly because we got to try two extra dishes for free :P I'm not really sure what happened but basically they kept giving us the wrong dish so we got to try Mao's pork belly and the dry sautéed green beans as well. Overall, this place has really good food but the prices are higher than what I am used to. 1. Green onion pancake 5/5 This is what they're known for and I highly recommend getting this! The pancake is the fluffy type (so not the thin crispy type that is more typical.) Good substitute for rice. 2. Mao's pork belly 4.5/5 The pork had a subtle spicy flavor and was a pleasant surprise! A little bit salty but I thought it was a unique dish. 3. Hunan smoked pork with smoked tofu 4/5 I'm not a huge fan of smoked pork in general but my friends really liked this one. 4. Hot boiled tender beef 3/5 Typical hot boiled tender beef dish in a vat of oil; nothing too special. 5. Dry sautéed green beans 4.5/5 The green beans were cooked perfectly and had a bit of spice to them! 6. Disappointed meal There is two tables for outdoor dining, they put a table right next to some trees and parking lot. Not a very pleasant environment for the outdoor dining. Service is good, very attentive I have came here a couple times, but today meal is disappointing. Especially the chicken, there is no meat, It is only bone. The spice is not flavorful, it just feels like they put some spice paste on top of the chicken. I loved the Godfather sauce and the green onion pancake. The Godfather sauce is so addictive. My lunch was several days ago and I can't stop thinking about the Godfather sauce and craving it. Damn you, delicious Godfather sauce!! We honestly didn't even know how to eat the green onion pancake (I should have done more research) but ended up breaking it into layers and spreading the Godfather sauce on it. SO GOOD! Unfortunately, the chicken and corn soup was really bland to the point of being pretty much inedible. I thought this would be another typical Hunan restaurant but I'm so happy to be wrong! Service was okay, but the food was better than expected. Surprisingly, the best dish was the eggplant and green beans stir fry, followed by The Godfather noodles, which were a little too spicy for me. Actually our 3rd time coming here food is absolutely on point every time. General Tso Chicken and Garlic Broccli are great! I don't usually go around leaving reviews but I was a little bothered by this last experience. We are now in 2022 why are people still quick to be judgmental? TLDR: I left a very nice tip "CASH" on the table, but paid by debit card. When the older lady server noticed I didn't leave a tip on the debit machine total, she said rudely "that price was without tip" looking at me like expecting a digital tip! As we are leaving she must've said something to the other staff because they didn't say anything to us as they have before like "thank you or bye", and they just stared? Weird. Very awkward. Yum yum! This place really shines in terms of food and service. My dad comes here almost every week and he can be quite nit picky, but he raves about this place. He loves the service and his only qualm is that it is relatively pricier than other places (but that's also because Asian food is such a good deal). This was my second time here and I like everything about it. There's a good spread of spicy and non-spicy options which is great if you have mixed preferences. We came for dinner in the early evening and were immediately seated. Food came out quick, tea was good, that pork sauce they give you to start is delicious, and service was attentive. For a party of 3, we got (1) Godfather fried rice, (3) mapo tofu, (2) eggplant and green beans, and (4) sour cabbage fish soup. The green onion pancakes were nothing like your typical flakey green onion pancakes. They were more of a chewier bao like texture which I enjoyed. They serve it with the godfather sauce, which brings in all of the flavor. The godfather sauce itself was a bit salty but once you eat it with the pancake, everything balances out. I liked to dip the pancake in the boiling hot fish filet broth! The godfather noodles includes the godfather sauce with hand cut noodles. The noodles were quite chewy and this was a simple dish that was quite yummy and packed with flavor. The boiling hot fish filets was my favorite dish of the night!! It included filets of tilapia, tofu, cabbage and bean sprouts in a spicy broth. The portion size is quite large and is meant to be shared! During COVID, they had pickup as well as delivery through DoorDash. They were just starting to get busy when I arrived (6:15pm), as the chef kindly greeted me and helped grab my order. We ordered the signature scallion pancake, boy choy w/mushroom, and celery w/smoked tofu (we were feeling like veggies that day)- all 3 were delicious. I will definitely be coming back! Was in town for a business trip and I ordered take-out from them on Monday Nov 8 at about 6pm. The food was OK. The service was terrible, to be specific the person answered the phone did not have basic manners. I first wanted to order the mouth-watering chicken (available on the menu posted on their website, dated June 2021), and was told they "never sell it". I then asked what other chicken dishes they have, and was told to "go read the menu myself, and call back when I know what to order". I called back and ordered the beef and tendons, asking whether it could be made less spicy, as their menu said you can alter the spiciness of the dishes, and again was met with "no, we have no control over that". Um, do you get the food from somewhere else other than cooking it directly in the kitchen? Otherwise how would you have no control over that? Ok went to pick up my order. No one was at the entrance. I was looking through the bunch of take-out orders placed near the door, and found mine. Then the same person came, who basically was like "what are you doing? you need to pay first". It was never my intention to not pay, and she basically accused me of stealing the food? Oh and no utensils were provided, I had to ask for it. No complementary rice either even though I ordered two dishes, that I could leave with though. I have been to many Chinese restaurants in California and New York, and cannot remember the last time I was treated this way. I get that their food is not bad, but many places have good food, and theirs is certainly not outstanding (esp. in the Bay Area), or not good enough to compensate for the bad service. We were initially deterred from this place from its high prices, but saw photos of the onion pancake and decided to try it at least once. The photos of the food really impressed us. We came to dine in before shelter in place started. It was empty when we came in so we were seated immediately. Inside is really nice and clean. They also have tons of pork hanging in the kitchen. The waiter was really nice and was helpful as this was our first time here. We ordered the onion pancake, eggplant and string bean, lamb and onion, and chili chicken. The waiter actually recommended we try something else other than the chili chicken, but the photos looked good so we still got it. (I thought this was kinda weird and the other waitress even laughed that he said something like that.) The food came out pretty fast and they honestly lived up to the expectations. Very homey feeling food. They have a nice outdoor dining area in front of the restaurant. Service was excellent. Loved everything we ordered but still need to come back to try everything else. I loved the fish dish, not exactly which one it was to be honest, just showed them a picture. The bean sprouts and cabbage in the dish was SO tasty. Enjoyed the celery pork belly tofu dish a lot. After living in Millbrae for the past 2+ years, this has become one of our go-to spots. We always get the fish with tofu, ants climbing up the tree noodles, and a third dish, maybe eggplant with garlic or something else to try. We came last Friday during the Coronavirus times, and I really appreciate the positive attitude of the workers, the efficient/clean/safe setup with the chairs up front (creating a safe distance between the workers/food and us customers), and the immediate wiping down of the credit card machine after I used it to pay. We had a few plates to share: eggplant and string beans, iron pot intestines, and god father noodles. All the dishes were extremely flavorful. I surprisingly loved the eggplant and string beans. I compared the texture and taste of the eggplant to those of a funnel cake because its softness is comparable to the dough and the taste has a lingering hint of oil (in a pleasing way), however my friends did not agree. The iron pot intestines were packed with a savory kick. I've only had korean intestines before where they grill it so I didn't know what to expect, but I sure was not disappointed. This place serves up the absolutely, most delicious eclectic Chinese dishes at a fair price! We tried the delicious green beans & eggplant, which was my favorite! Also had the Godfather Noodles, which had a nice spicy kick, but not too spicy! Also tried the Kung Pau chicken, which was good, but a bit heavy on the peanuts. It's rather humorous that they offer a 'free tap water' with a yelp check-in, which I suspect is a joke. We found that they served free tap water and hot tea to everyone regardless of a Yelp Check-in! We came on a quiet Monday night to avoid the crowds, which are seemingly infamous! Sole, tofu, chili: We get this regularly and it is fantastic As the name implies, this place is nothing short of wonderful. My husband and I have been to Wonderful many times, and each time the staff has been very attentive, pleasant, and accommodating. They've given us extra servings of their well-known spicy sauce, and on a few occasions, have given us free bao as a thank you for returning. The food is consistently delicious every single time and we've taken friends and family to this restaurant as it's a must-go on our list when our family comes to town. the green onion pancake here is an absolute showstopper. she is thicc and fluffy, so special and unmatched. she's not just one mere thin layer like all other restaurant scallion pancakes, she is expansive and unique, so many layers to unpack and embrace. truly can't get her off my mind. really though, this is the one item that i always find myself craving. so fluffy and pairs well with savory entree dishes. as someone who loves soft and fluffy bread, the way wonderful has put such a wonderful twist on something that is typically flat (and sometimes hard) is something that i have to commend them for. I've only ever ordered takeout dishes from here so I can't speak for dining experience or service, but the food is pretty good, albeit a bit greasy / too oily for my personal liking. The Godfather noodles are good, meaty and well seasoned from the sauce but a little hard to get it to stick to the noodles. Their cilantro lamb dish is also excellent. Other items like their fried rice were a miss for me. Prices are a bit higher than other Chinese spots in the area but honestly, that fluffy green onion pancake has me in a chokehold and I'm loyal to her. Excellent food here.. This review/rating is more a critique of the owner: Extremely rude and presumptuous when dealing with reviews. My family went to eat here yesterday, prepared to take to go if sitting in was not available, and asked if any tables were available for sitting. After politely being told no more would be seated, not the reason why, my family just agreed we would just take our food to go. Because we were unaware of the "No seating half an hour before closing" rule I guess is well known, one of us decided to leave a review to let others know if they decide to make a drive out. The next day we receive this reply from the owner (pic attached)... bear in mind, we didn't leave a horrible critique review nor a glowing one of praise. Just a neutral observation so we gave a 3 star. We never used to go out to eat much before covid but we have made a real effort to do so during covid to support businesses. Wonderful is one of three restaurants we started to order from regularly since quarantine began to support good food and also their serious stance and protective measures on covid - including getting their staff vaccinated. Every order we spend $100+ because it is just that good! The food is really phenomenal and the staff we have been served by are amazing and nice.
