Extremely impressive meal. Possibly the best Mexican food I've ever had. We had a party of 4 and we all loved our dishes. I asked the server and she said they make most everything from scratch. It tastes like it. This place pays attention to detail such as the homemade salsa and queso. I had the fajitas with beef and it was basically a whole steak. Really stellar food with sophisticated multi-layered seasoning. What was really strange was the place was completely empty except for us. Hard to fathom. What a great place tucked into the mountains of Coal Creek in Golden. We stopped in for dinner and were impressed with the cozy mountain feel, friendly wait staff and delicious food. My daughter had the Steak Bowl, generous portion and delish, husband had the chicken club & fries and said it was very good. I had the grilled cheese and tomato soup. Cool little place. Despite the name, there is not much of a view. I mean, you are in the mountains which is nice, but if you are expecting a panoramic view, you will not have one here. The food was flavorful, but it was cold. I had a simple smothered steak burrito. The chili tasted great, and the steak was cooked properly and had good flavor. The only complaint is temperature. I mean, it was really cold. The staff were friendly, however I did have to wait a while for water. The small complimentary chips and salsa was nice. The view from the restaurant is beautiful. The patio area was wonderful, until the lightening started and had to head inside. Got the white sangria which was more wine than anything else. We are locals who have been going to the Wondervu Cafe since the early 1980's. The Wondervu Cafe under the former owner, Adeline, was such a delightful treat, with her family's recipes and authentic dishes! A diverse menu with lots of choices. Always fresh, vibrant and so delicious. I have only a few positives to report. The waitstaff were attentive and very nice. Service was good, although there were only 4 people in the restaurant. Regarding the food: I can't express how disappointed we were with our dinner last evening. The authentic home-made recipes are a thing of the past. The menu is so limited with only a few choices for Mexican entree's, which is what the Wondervu Cafe was known and loved for. The food from start to finish was a sad affair. The salsa was an odd orange color and not the vibrant flavorful home-made salsa and chips they were famous for. We ordered the Chili Relleno plate and it wasn't even a real Chili Relleno! It was a crispy shell filled with cheese and a few tiny pieces of green chili inside. (Think frozen food entree) The green chili tasted canned, it was gelatinous. The red rice tasted like it was from a box, think Rice a Roni mix. It was such a shock and tremendous disapointment to see how far the cafe has declined. We won't be going back. read more

Hidden gem. The owner greeted us and checked on us throughout our lunch. The food was fresh and cooked to perfection. I appreciate the smaller menu so there's more attention to the details of what's available (quality over quantity). Beef enchiladas are not on the menu but they happily made them upon request. The beans were seasoned perfectly and the steak cooked to order - and everything was presented beautifully. Friendly and accommodating staff. Off the beaten path option that's not touristy. Some reviewers have complained about the lack of views but they are not advertising that they offer one - It's not WonderVIEW but WonderVU (pronounced "voo" per the owner). Went there a couple of weeks ago and there were very few people there. Waited 45 mins for breakfast. Food came out cold and tasteless. Their menu varies from week to weekend. The menu on the weekend is much smaller than their week menu. I have lived here in the canyon for over 20 years and have eaten here a lot. They have lost my business for good. I can see them not surviving like several other restaurants in this area. Where do we start!?!!! We went for pizza. We had never been, so we ordered the Messi and the Pizzabirria!!!!! Oh my gosh, these pizzas were both amazing. The au Jus with the Pizzabirria was out of this world. It was not spicy at all but had so much flavor. The chimmichurri sauce on the Messi was delicious, the crust was perfect! $$ Visiting my brother in Golden CO, and he brought us to this small diner up in Coal Creek Canyon. Wondervu Cafe had indoor and outdoor seating and a very nice staff. The food was served hot and, as you can see from the photo, there was plenty of it. Parking was not a problem 11am, but we were not there during the breakfast rush. Been going here for 25 years , probably once to three times a week and now the new "management " or "chef" or whoever changed the menu just sank the quality of food for me . The salsa is so salty it's inedible , and when I order salsa and chips at a Mexican restaurant I want chips the fresh ones that used to exist were amazing but now they are some kind of bread thing that is so large you can't actually eat them . No refried beans ? What? No vegetarian green chili anymore. I quit going . Why reinvent the wheel ? For 46 years this place did a great job why come in and try to fix something that's not broken? This place needs serious help (in more ways than one). It was 4th of July, people waiting all over the place. They let you know they only have one server. Plenty of people working there, but only one server. We waited 1hr and 15 minutes for a table. We really didn't know of any other options nearby. We both ordered the chicken wrap (but had grilled chicken). Asked if there was a charge to substitute and she said "no", however my friend was charged $1.00 for hers (but, I wasn't for some reason). We didn't say anything. Lastly, they don't show anywhere that they have a full bar. They just have a sign board for their beers. Why not put "full bar available" on the board? I tried the Wondervu Cafe and was very happy with the food and service. On a snowy Saturday I came in for a late breakfast/lunch. The staff is wearing masks and dining is allowed although the cafe is limiting total number of diners. They have a large breakfast and lunch menu. Being indecisive I went with the waitress Jessalyn suggestion of the biscuits and gravy. It came with two eggs any style and hash browns or seasoned potatoes. It also came with a fruit cup filled with orange slices, blueberries, banana slices and pineapple. It was very filling and they gave me homemade salsa to try. The restaurant was very clean and the staff all polite and friendly. The coffee was fine. They were very nice to offer to top my cup off before I left as I had asked for a to go cup. I can't wait to go back and try their Mexican food, which is what they're known for. For those who complain about the prices this is a small town that is a steep canyon drive and 19 miles from Golden. If you want cheap food and cheap ingredients drive to a major city. That's not what this great cafe is about. read more

I always try to give restaurants at least a couple visits before I post a review, unless they stand out in some way. My man and I decided to stop here for a quick drink and appetizer yesterday, since we've driven past this place a few times. While I'll agree that the prices are far too high for a Mexican food place, it is a mountain town, so it's to be expected. Since it looked like they only carried Gold tequila (horrible!) I decided on a mimosa. It was fine, but was nowhere near worthy of the $9.75 price tag. My boyfriend's beer was actually well priced and a good choice. We got the guacamole, which also comes with salsa, and although the price (at $13.75) was outrageous, and guac. itself was actually very good, fresh and flavorful. There was a fairly large portion too, and the salsa and chips were yummy! Most of the waitresses we came into contact with were nice, save one that seemed to have an attitude for no reason. I'm looking forward to coming back and trying the vegetarian chili (red and green!) and their other Mexican fare, which they list on their menu as having no lard . This in itself makes it more worth the try, even with the exorbitant price tag. BTW, even though I only had the guacamole and the salsa, the food is at least 10 times better than Taco Bell. I can't even eat a bean burrito at Taco Bell without feeling nauseous. It's just plain ignorant to compare this place to nasty fast food! You'll definitely pay less at Taco Bell, but at least you won't have intestinal issues from chemically enhanced, horrible, (barely able to be called) food. read more

The chef really seems to care about the food he's serving and making the place better. The servers I've had seem like they enjoy what they do and do a great job. I can't say enough good things about Wondervu Cafe. The Mexican specialties are excellent, they have quite a menu of things to choose from, and it's all really good. Get the home made, fresh queso dip while you're waiting for your entree. We split a steak and chicken fajita. The veggies are fresh, and the protein was seasoned well. You'll have plenty of warm flour tortillas to fill with the sizzle. Nice selection of beers and the margaritas are cold. Our server was very attentive and offered nice suggestions. Food is very very good. Menu is great with some unique dishes. I highly recommend Eating there for quality of the food. But my goodness, it's so expensive. I live near by and would love to go there more often but I simply can't afford it. the prices are up there with higher end restaurant prices. I get that it's in the mountains and maybe it's more expensive to run the business but there are other restaurants in other canyons or mountain towns that have more reasonably priced food that is the same quality. This place is absolutely more expensive that your average mountain restaurant. The portions are huge so maybe they could be cheaper and smaller? It's always dead in there with the exception of breakfast so I'm assuming I'm not the only one who finds it too expensive. Ultimately I recommend this restaurant but only if you can afford it. read more
