What a beautiful store! I'm so glad I found it I like to make a lot of Asian recipes. We are from Chicago and I always found what I needed in Chinatown and even locally. Since moving here, I was having a hard time finding basic products. This store is amazing and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Tonight I am preparing Peking Duck, so we stopped in to find the wrappers and Plum sauce! If you're looking for a beautiful array of Asian products and food, you're going to find it here! Great small but well stocked Asian market. I enjoy getting bags of bean sprouts for stir fries here. They have produce, pastries, and lots of dried basics items used to create Asian meals. They have a frozen food area and general kitchen plates and utensils area. It's easy on and off State Rte 70 near Ollie's. Lots of free parking. It's clean and has a variety but is not overwhelming. Very cool Asian store! Recommended for anyone who wants to try something different. Every Thursday they have many fresh bakery options. There is a large selection of Ramen. My fiancé and I enjoyed picking out many new flavors we've never seen at any other store. The kind man working the register helped us pick out some fish ice cream and Asian drinks. The apple flavored soda was excellent. I make sure to stop by once a month and they are always new items every now and then. Place seemed pretty clean when I was there. read more

Wong Kai is a small market inside of a large industrial complex of the wholesale food supplier under the same name. Since they supply most of the local Asian restaurants with their produce and dry goods, then you know that you will not only get a bargain here, but also get some fresh items. Fresh items are only available as their small yet maintained produce section, offering Asian vegetables such as Asian Chives, Gai Lan, Snow Pea Tips, U-Choy, Chinese Eggplant, and more. Their prices are very low, almost half of what you would normally pay at most ethnic food markets. Bottles sauces and condiments are also very low in price, but make sure to check the date on everything that you purchase. I have purchased many items here and brought them home to find that they were already expired. Especially their ramen and bags of noodles. They have a small selection of frozen items and specialty juices. I do not recommend purchasing dim sum items here, or the bakery goods from Orlando, because they have been sitting in that case for months. However, after all of this; I still frequent this grocery once a week for specialty produce and sauces because it is close and cheap. read more

I've been coming here for years and it is always one of my go to places for asian ingredients. It is a little small, but since it is the outlet for the local asian wholesaler you can get some great deals. Prices are always reasonable. There is no prepared foods, but a fair bit of frozen dumplings and the like. But getting good gai lan, u-choy, Shanghi bok choy, baby bok choy, chinese sausages, and when the season is right long beans is always a treat. Browse the preserved and pickled veggies to find things to put into Szechuan dishes. The rice is always a good price and the selection of teas is nice. I can always find fermented black beans and good soy and fish sauce here as well. Just about everything you need to make some yummy things. Just wish they had fish and a meat counter and I would be all set. I got my best cleaver from here as well! Go, smile and try buying something new to try making at home. read more

Wow ! Last time I was here 5 years ago wasn't much fresh vegetables to buy . Now they have plenty to pick from . Not as much as st Pete but I'm grateful for the selection they do have . Not overly price too . They also have roasted duck . But they only have it once a month you would have to call and ask what weekends they will carry fresh roasted duck . I'm guessing the owner checked me out and was he was really nice and friendly, Will definitely be back . Zero star if I could. The place doesn't have a lot of stuff. Not very many selection . I thought it was going to be a big place but the store was small. I guess the rest of the building was just wear house. Angry looking old Asian lady in the back counter. There were some bread with stuff in it so I bought some bread and drinks.. figured ..I should buy something since I'm in there. Much better store in Jacksonville with more veriety. The lady at the register was not friendly. There were a little plate of flowers by the register I recognized. I told my friend I love that flower. We have it in Thailand and it smell so nice I love it. She said "that's in Asia only. And That's from my country CHINA!" My friend thought she wanted to fight me ! First of, if she lift her head up I am Asian. And I said we have it in Thailand doesn't mean in Thailand ONLY! stupid bitch! Staff is super helpful and the store had absolutely everything I needed. Prices are way cheaper than at a typical grocery store. The staff even helped me get things I would need for recipes I have never cooked. My first batch of mochi turned out great! Will return for all of my Asian food needs. I've been here only a handful of times but each time I leave with excitement about the food that I get! They have fresh buns from Orlando every Thursday!!! And then the last time I visited, they sold my childhood favorite cookie..."Too Chee Baan" as my parents use to call it. They're just small round biscuit cookies with delicious colorful hardened icing on top...it sure brings back childhood memories. :-) Super happy about this place. read more

This place is dark, dirty and cramped. The person behind the counter needs to call for someone who speaks English if you ask a question. The produce has been fresher recently. Lots of fun stuff if you explore, but still so dingy, it needs a good scrubbing. read more

While i am sure they have a reasonable collection of Asian delectables, I really wouldn't know because the lazy counter tech would not come from behind the counter to help us. When asked questions about product all she did was point in a general direction. I asked her about Kafir leaves and Thai basil and all she did was Point after the third time, I sent my daughter to the counter, she came finally out to point out basil but said she didn't have any Kafir leaves. I then went in search of Panang curry paste only to get aggravated and leave when she was back to counting out her Peppers behind the counter head down completely ignoring myself and the other 4 customers in the store... horrible customer service read more

I go here every off and on when I need something from a chinese specialty store. They have really good prices and a decent selection. They have an excellent selection of Gyoza/Potstickers and some pretty good looking produce. It's basically the only place in Bradenton to get this stuff. The only other good chinese supplier is in south Sarasota which is a bit far from Lakewood Ranch. read more

If there were a way to give zero stars to this poor excuse for a store, I would happily do so. I've been here three times now, and each time it got worse. The experience I just had, my third, was the worst. Let me begin with customer service. Not. A week ago, I went to Wong Kai in search of four pretty standard items for an Asian market: Sichuan peppercorns, Udon (preferably Shirakiku frozen), Soba (ditto), and Mirin. After struggling through the various items placed haphazardly on the shelves, I began searching for help. I finally located an Asian woman loading frozen food into their freezer cabinets, and politely asked if she could help me. She grunted. I said I'd phoned earlier to make sure they had the percorns but couldn't find them, would she show me where they were. Grunt, and a wave of arm - "Over there, next aisle." I walked up and down that aisle twice without finding them, went back and asked again. Same answer, with less patience. I gave up on the peppercorns and moved to the frozen items. "Do you have frozen udon?" A sigh of exasperation, a wave at the end freezer. I checked. No udon. Asked again. "Last cabinet! In the last cabinet!!" Looked again, couldn't find. Apologized, asked for help. She heaved herself up, pushed aside a bunch of other frozen items that were hiding the Udon, and showed it to me. I placed it in my cart, then asked if she could help me find the peppercorns. Aggrieved sigh, shrug of shoulders, stomping to the next aisle. She pointed at a package and said "There." Note - the package was entirely in Chinese but for one tiny spot at bottom that said "Sichuan peppercorns." Silly me. As I walked toward the cash register, I asked where I'd find Mirin, since it hadn't been on any of the shelves. "No Mirin." Oh. When will it be in again? "Don't know." How about frozen Soba? "No soba." So pleasant. So customer-friendly. I told myself it was all due to a language problem, that perhaps her English was limited. After all, I was in an Asian grocery, right? But no. At the cash register, she ignored me completely, but got on the phone with what I assume was her boss and in very good, comprehensible English, asked when they would have Mirin. So, not a language problem. Did she bother telling me when the Mirin would be available? No. Did she offer to ring up my purchases? No. She walked away from the register and went back to what she'd been doing. At that point, I had to ask myself why I was giving money to a store that obviously didn't want my business, and I left. But, since I'd spoken to a perfectly pleasant woman earlier (who'd said "I no longer handle retail, but let me check", and proceeded to do just that), I called to complain. I got the same woman, who apologized and said "The next time you come, please just ask for Kim, or for the American woman, and I'll help you myself." Perhaps there should be a sign on the front door saying "If you want service, ask for the American woman, Kim"?? We're going to be in this area half a year. We cook a lot of Asian dishes. I was really hoping this place would work out, but I will not be back a third time. read more

This is a very small Chinese grocery store with many extremely over priced items. It is in a bad location that has been robbed several times. This store is getting worse every time I visit. The inventories are very limited. Many of the items sold are close to the expiration date. The Chinese lady cashier at the front is very rude. She hardly says hello as though she is expecting for the customer to say hello first. If you are looking for customer service, do not even bother to go there. Even younger children that they have as cashier sometimes are much friendlier than her and they have more customer service skill than her. It is very bad that the children know more how to treat customers better than she does. From what i have heard, they have lost a lot of customers because of her bad attitude and no customer service skill. If you try to pick through the produce to find the best one, you may hear her saying something in Chinese as though she is saying that you are making a mess even though you are looking through and putting things back the way they were. For goodness sake, if you are going to pay money for something, you are going to try to find the best items, not wilted produce or expired products. Businesses survive because of customers, if they do not care about customer service; customers will go somewhere else were they can be treated with respect besides getting a much better price. All customers should be treated the same way. I referred my friends there and they all said that of the few times they were there, they all agreed that products were overpriced and had a very bad customer service experience. If you are having a bad day already, do not go there, your day will just get worse. read more

Just grateful that we have asian market nearby. From what I understand, they are actually supplier, so the little store is just an added bonus that helps customer like me. Great prices compare to other asian markets. Customer service? If you are lucky to be there when Kim, the american lady is there, you will receive a warm and helpful service. The older lady, she is amazing for still being able to work harder. The lady at front, she can use some customer service training, lol. If you ask her question, she can be fisty, lol Seems like she doesn't want to be asked question and all she wants to do is check you out and you pay while she is doing her other thing. I just learned to ignore her and doesn't expect any kind of customer service from her. I am there to buy the product, I remind myself, and not to deal with her, lol. If you don't know her well, yes, all the reviews that said about her are about true.
