This review is long overdue, but Sam built three redwood gates with fencing for me a couple years back and I was, and still am, very happy with the results. The existing rotten (and termite infested) gates and a fence on a block wall were removed and new gates and fencing were installed with the design being simple, functional, and termite resistant due to the redwood construction. The cost was reasonable and installation was done within the agreed time period with good communication between us. After a few years the gates still function perfectly and the finish and construction have held up nicely. Sam also removed a termite infested balcony railing and built and painted a new redwood railing that was exactly what I wanted and showed great attention to detail. Like the gates and fencing, it is holding up very nicely. If you desire new fencing or gates then I think you would be happy with Sam. I have every intention of turning to Sam when I have new projects. read more

I had the strangest experience with this handyman. I had a small job, adjust sprinklers, install door and hang some hardware on garage wall involving screws in studs behind walls. He stopped by and seemed like a really nice guy but even as job was described and he looked at the garage he offered no estimate which had been the purpose of the visit, at least in my mind. He kept asking if I wanted the wall painted first and I said I could do that (not exactly skilled labor and I've done it all my life) but the rest was not my strength or something I could easily do and I was trying to reduce my cost (as we all do, right?). He asked for me to call him on Sunday when I finished the painting and I did, also indicating that I needed an estimate to get started. I did that per our agreement. I can't imagine estimates being unusual for anyone in this business nor should my asking have been taken as an indication that I was an estimate "collector" who would just waste his time. In fact, I hope to accept the first one, but I know how long things take and how much things cost. Anyway, he stopped returning calls and did not show up on the following Monday when he said he would once I finished painting. I had to get this project finished, even if it meant overpaying a little and I had no other estimates scheduled. The job was his for the taking but he left me in the lurch, possibly costing me a week on this project. I would have been better off never having called him at all. I need someone dependable without all the funny business I encountered. He may do good work but this seemed a little temperamental but I could be assuming too much and there could have been other reasons. The bottom line is that it caused a major inconvenience. read more

Other than the handymen I've interacted with while I lived at apartments, Sam is the first I hired myself. So I do not have a real good reference point to compare Sam to. I hired Sam mainly because his quote was the middle of 2 other quotes I got and that he had great reviews on Yelp. He was hired to fix a floor board that had water damage and a leaky toilet. He completed the job plus fixed a gap in the shower door. This earned him 3 stars because he was okay. What gave him the 4th star was his pleasantness and customer service. He was responsive and I informed him to keep me up-to-date. He failed to tell me he couldn't find the matching floor board but once I called him, he pretty much called me on every play-by-play on when he could start. I wouldn't knock him for failing to inform me of the progress the first time b/c everyone is different and he didn't know I'm a hands-on type of person. I couldn't give me 5 stars mainly b/c I only used him once and he wasn't completely perfect. His work was fine. Even after a month no issue. I had requested an itemize bill that includes cost for all individual parts and labor. Instead, he gave me a hand written receipt of what was done, the total cost, and the deposit paid. I prefer to know what I am paying for in detail and to be assured that I am not paying for something else that has no relevance to me or the project at hand. Overall, if I have another project, I would call Sam for an estimate. read more

They remodeled both my bathrooms, took off the popcorn ceiling throughout the house, smoothed it out and repainted the entire 2 story house. Sam and Miguel did an excellent job of rebuilding a part of the bay window that was destroyed by rot from rain runoff. They used new red wood and stucco molding and did not need to remove the window, cutting and cleaning the affected area then sawing pieces to fit the removed wood. He also threw in a quick fix of some other rotten wood that was attaching a roof drain spout to the house. Sam also had very good ideas on other projects I need addressed around the house. These guys deserve a 0 rating and if I ever find out that they are doing any work near me for my neighbors I would definitely tell them to be skeptical. How is it when you call someone they take your number and never call you back despite you texting them and leaving three voicemail messages! Businesses like this are usually shady and won't last. All this guy Sam had to do was either text or call me and say he didn't want the job! Heck, I know how to call someone else! These guys have zero understanding of "customer service ". I found Sam through a large sweep of handymen while looking to finish my guest studio and am really happy I did! I needed a large, and weird, assortment of projects completed at once (i.e. power outlet rewiring and rerouting, light installation, designer-tile finishing and grouting, wood-window planing, drywall patching, and cable running) and wasn't sure how to get it all done, but Sam and his team handled it all. He worked within my budget to make sure we could get it all done, and after that, his team came in for 2 days and finished everything to my specifications. Sam was around the entire time but even still they would consult me when minor, unforeseen corner tile arrangement decisions had to be made (for example) and give me their opinion based on their experience. Working with Sam the first time was just a great experience and since then I've also used him on two other projects. Sam is now definitely my guy and I would recommend him to anyone else looking for an expert handyman that can help you with both small and really large projects, or any combination in between. He was here right on time - at the front end of the time frame. Instead of attempting to tackle a job that ended up being much more than a job for a "handyman," he gave me advice on what to do.
