No joke, no exaggeration. I have traveled across three continents, and Tim Curry roasts the best coffee I have had anywhere. It would not be out of place in a three-Michelin-star dining room. He roasts every batch himself over a wood fire, feeding a beautiful old roaster with logs he chops by hand. His espresso blends are composed with a level of precision that feels almost synesthetic. Ask him what he is aiming for and he will describe the roast in shapes: how wide the base should be, whether it tapers or flares, how many sides the finished polygon has. I have stood there listening, fascinated, with no real idea what he is talking about, then tasted the cup and understood anyway. Important to know: this is not a coffee shop. This is a little Tiny place right across the street from NV Energy. You wouldn't know it by looking at the outside, but all The amazing goodness is right inside the door! Don't be deceived by the entrance .... there are leaves and wood and misc items unorganized and placed on pallets. Darn it Wood-Fire Roasted Coffee Company must you tease me. Yes, this place has good coffee. I bought the Guatemala 16oz bag and man! Man! Dang! I want to say I hate it, but I really like it. When I make my coffee and drink it, I only drink it black because I have gotten use to it this way. But the bad thing is you have to have really good quality ground coffee roasted fresh for this to be palatable. When I drank this coffee it was like you come across 300 bars of gold. Youre eyes just open wide and realize you really have something here. You found something! Something you dont want to share. I know this is the evil side of me talking. I want to keep this place a secret and only I have the knowledge about this place hahahahaha. Sorry just got a bit dark there. But it wouldn't be a good business model and this coffee place would go out of business and there would be no more Wood-Fire Roasted Coffee Company and then I would be again on the hunt for another good coffee place. Found in an industrial area, this small batch coffee roaster makes magic from beans. We first had this coffee at a local breakfast spot. Off we went to find it and discover what else they have in that magic hat. Okay, not really a hat. More like a little roaster in a small space that roast those beans for anyone to enjoy. You can buy any of the varieties currently available in 1/2 lb and 1 lb bags. We purchase the whole beans and always buy a few different ones. Usually light or medium roasts. Boyfriend has found his drug supplier. When I say drug, I mean them coffee beans. Boy has been getting all fancy and into the coffee world (He recently got some super fancy expresso machine and fancy european grinder). So, with that being said, he has been experimenting with a crap ton of beans from different brands and places. So far Wood-Fire roasted coffee company is one of the consistent beans he's been drinking from. Anywho, I can't really tell you much about their beans and what not because I'm not that huge of a coffee connoisseur. But, again that's what Tim Curry is there for! Tim is super friendly and usually jittery like a jellybean when you catch him later in the day after his fresh morning roasts (he's super funny). He'll answer any and every question you have, explain the roast flavor profile and really make sure you know what you're taking home with you. They offer a loyalty stamp card (to which they keep), monthly coffee club, and a discount on Tuesdays. I wanted to send my relatives something different for the holidays. I know they are coffee drinkers, but want to get them something special. I decided to get stop by and try a new place. This place is not somewhere you'd think to buy coffee, as it is off of Mill Street in an industrial area. This is not a typical coffee joint. The owner roasts, blends and packages the beans on site. You could probably sample the coffee here, but I don't think they sell cups of coffee. I was promptly greeted, and I asked the lady which was their most popular coffee. She told me their Cowboy Coffee blend was, so I took a bag of that for $15.00. Their coffee runs anywhere from $15.00 to $18.00 for a one pound bag. As I watched, the cashier mixed the beans to make the Cowboy blend, ground them for me, put it in a package and vacuum sealed the top. I was truly impressed, as I have never had smelled coffee so fresh before! I asked if there were any special brewing instructions and the owner, said no. He, too, was really friendly and obviously took pride in his work and product. As I drove home, all I could smell was the delicious smell of this coffee. I really need to go back and buy a bag for my house. If you want to try a new place to get a good bag of coffee and support a local business, try this place. read more

Tim Curry is one of less than 10 people roasting coffee using a wood fired roaster. It's an old school way of dont bf things, and requires attention to detail and a deft hand, or in Tim's case, a sensitive ear! Tim has been referred to as the Coffee Whisperer, and that's mainly due to the fact he roasts by ear, listening for the beans to pass the "first crack" stage, then carefully monitoring and listening for them to reach the point where the flavor profile is optimal. Ever since Yelp's Coffee Culture event last August, I've become pretty particular about my coffee at home, and when it comes to espresso roasts, this is my go to. My favorite roasts are the DiNapoli and the WFR. Ive also delved into some of their other roasts for my French press, and while I like them, I haven't found a favorite. So far the Ethiopian Yrgacheffe is leading the pack though. Tim offers a great loyalty program and has discounts on Tuesdays too! The Coffee of the month club is what I learned about on my last visit, and it sounds like a lot of fun! He brings in specialty coffees for this program, typically around $25/lb, and he shares them at around $17/lb with club members! WFR is a great local roaster, and Tim is always happy to allow guests to sample and explore his products when you visit the roastery. It's always a good time! read more

This is another review of this awesome coffee roaster! Tim produces some fine coffee beans using his own taste and techniques to develop some really great roasts. This past weekend, Master Roaster Tim, (my title for him,) hosted a French Press workshop to share some methods he has found to make a good cup of coffee. I use a FP, but had no idea there were techniques to really changing the flavor of my final brew that could be produced through methodology! It was great to sit with other coffee lovers and get into the different complexities and dimensions of a bean based on grind, water temp, brewing time, even the process of mixing, jiggiling and stirring beans and water to develop the flavor of the brew. I really look forward to my visits to the shop. Tim always has the time to talk about coffee: what he is roasting, what he will be roasting and various things he knows or has discovered about his beans and roasting. I got lost the first time I tried to find this place but it was well worth the extra effort. They're definitely off the beaten path and a little tough to locate, but stay the course! You're about to have some amazing coffee. I met with the owner, Tim, when I first went in. He explained the process and I told him the kinds of flavor profiles I was interested in, and he steered me toward some great coffees! Now this has become my go-to gift and also something I impress visiting guests with. Everyone always comments on the coffee and how good it is. I admit I didn't get all the details on the roasting process, but whatever they do, it's incredible. You end up with nuanced flavors and rich coffee- not that burnt rubber taste you often get from the "super roasters" who shall not be named. Something to keep in mind that I didn't really know is that you want to buy your coffee REALLY fresh. He's roasting every day so just buy what you'll use in the next week since a lot of the aromas die off relatively quickly. Good to know! I'll be waiting until the last minute to get Christmas gifts. Came here for a yelp event! Tim curry the owner explained to us the the process he goes through in roasting each kind of his coffee beans! What a lesson to learn. It's really nice to know that some people take so much care into the making the taste of your coffee amazing. When I tried their iced version of his coffee you could taste the woody taste to it. Hence the wood-fire roasting. Fresh is best! And you can tell by the smell when you open the bag!! After I drank my full cup I didn't feel jittery either! So that was nice. Being pregnant an all. Would defiantly recommend in buying their whole coffee beans. We grind our coffee fresh every morning to get the true true flavor of the beans. Can't wait to try out the bag we bought tomorrow morning. It's the best way to go. A grinder is very in expensive everyone should have one. No matter how hard you look you'll never find any coffee for sale that even a week old, that's how fresh this stuff is, and in the coffee world freshness is quite Huge. all those yummy flavors that really pop and dance on your tongue will either vanish or be reduce to subtle hints of an amazing experience that has long passed you by. but fear not, buy smaller amounts and buy them often and you'll be in Coffee Nirvana. I usually don't like French Roast, because it seems like most of them taste 'burnt', but I even enjoy the French Roast from Wood-Fire Roasted. Hands down, I think Wood Fire Roasted Coffee is one of the best roasters in Reno. Full disclosure, I've been using Tim's coffee at Dish Cafe for 12 years. Every few years we evaluate the other possibities in town, have tastings and give our customers other options to try out and Tim always wins. His coffee is full bodied without being over roasted and doesn't have the over roasted bitter flavor of Starbucks. I can attest to the fact that on a daily basis we get complements on our coffee, not once a week or every few days, but every day someone will mention the how great the coffee is. I have a feeling I'll be up all night after visiting Wood-fire Roasted Coffee Company today. Right now I'm drinking Guatemalean Antigua, run through a French Press. I learned a lot about coffee today. It's not the easiest place to find because it's in a small warehouse area. They close at 2 pm, so make sure you get there earlier than that. Walk in past the big bags of coffee beans and stack of firewood, complete with axe. And then have a conversation about coffee while beans pleasantly roast in the corner. We tasted a coffee that was sold out. Oh well. And bought two bags of coffee. Have you ever had a coffee that tastes like it is hugging you from the inside out? That's how this feels. What does this mean? Well in doing some business with the owner I was enlightened. Compared to wine, coffee has notes and connoisseurs too. With electric and gas roasters you lack the quality within the taste and often batches are burnt making a perfect blend for Folger's or Starbuck's. I've been buying coffee from Tim since 2005. I recommend the Tanzanian pea-berry, Ethiopian, Guatemalan and my favorite blended coffee is the Cowboy Roast. Really there isn't a bad one in the bunch... My dad would recommend the French Roast, but I like the lighter, "Full City" Roasts because the flavors tend to be much more complex and unique by region. We are so lucky to have Tim and his Roaster in Reno. I haven't really enjoyed a store bought coffee drink in years and it's all his fault.. I buy two pounds of what ever is hot from the roaster on the day I stop by, and am never disappointed. Though I do have favorites I keep brewing notes on all his roasts, I like the variety. I especially like putting his medium roasts through my espresso machine, they are perfect for having coffee drinks all day long and never spinning out (My grinder hopper is filled with the Brasilia currently, mmmellowy goodness) He's open 10-2 daily then he makes deliveries and goes to his night job. If you are into coffee and live in Reno it's your duty to drive to his shop and buy what ever roast he tells you to.
