Magpie is a cute little coffee shop that is tucked on the end of Wells Avenue and is easy to miss unless you're looking for it. They have a black sign with a bird on it which is really the only marker you can spot for knowing you've found it. The inside has simple decor but is bright and clean. I got a standard iced vanilla latte and croissant, both satisfied my breakfast cravings but were not anything extraordinary. With so many great coffee shops in Reno, you've got to find a way to stand out to get people back in the door. Even though I had a good experience here, I'm not sure if I would be rushing back unless I found something worth returning for. Still a nice place to stop if you're in the are! read more

We happened upon this place while window shopping in the midtown area. The menu is small, but hits all the highlights. We were a little bummed because we saw on their listing that they have pastries and were wanting a little snack but they didn't have any available that day. We were both happy with our coffee selections and my latte had a pretty design on it. The barista was pleasant and answered our questions, especially after we let her know we were first timers. If you are looking for cute and cozy, this probably isn't your vibe. It was pretty cold, and the tables and chairs were just basic hard white furniture and the barstools didn't look particularly comfortable either. We probably would have stayed for another cup but both of us were feeling restless and my legs were starting to get numb after sitting for a while. I'd most likely come in and do a to go order if I were to come back. Because the drinks were definitely good. Just not really my jam for a place to sit and visit. read more

Nice place to get a cup of coffee or tea. Service is fast and courteous. But the big kicker is that their coffee is fantastic. Has to be some of the best in Reno. Coffee is probably the best you can find in a town like Reno. Ie a big fish in a small pond. What warrants the 2 star is the coldness of the barista and pastry. The barista was noticeably different when their friends patronized the shop. And the audacity to turn up the warmth and friendliness with their friends was just rude. If you're a friend sure patronize the shop. If not, maybe find a chain cafe where you would be treated better. A little kindness goes a long way. Coffee tastes better when the service is better. Finally tried magpie after meaning to for many months if not years. It was okay. The coffee was good although I don't think there were any other options for milk other than whole and oat milk. The syrup is house made which is cool, but not many options (only had vanilla, honey, chocolate and strawberry). No real vibe. It was quiet, minimalist and very industrial. Service was very bland. Not bad service by any means but also not fun or over friendly service. Put lids on our coffees and on both lids when we poked the straw through, the plastic triangles where the hole in the lid is broke off into our drinks. Just okay. Lotsa options for coffee in Reno so not sure I'll be back but it was nice to try! read more

TLDR: Not for me, Sour Beans. If you like your coffee bean sour, this is a good place to try! Unfortunately, I do these reviews mainly to remind myself. And for coffee, I prefer a bitter bean as opposed to a sour bean. Sooo... for me personally, this is 3 star. But the barista was friendly. The Americano was strong. I REALLY like the fact that she offered to steam my milk, so my coffee won't cool with the cold milk. I really appreciated that a lot. The other thing I want to mention is the shop outside. Honestly, I drove past the place, because I thought it was an abandoned building. The buiding itself was dark, there was NO SIGNAGE, except a silhouette of a bird. Lucky for me, I remembered what a magpie was, so I thought I would walk back and see if this was the place. Wonderful open layout, roll up doors on each end of the shop with lots of seating. The coffee was outstanding! I asked the barista to give me something he thinks I should try that's sweet and hot.. Cinnamon honey latte was "chefs kiss" I love the low prices!!! The barista was a gem, the small bites were delicious, we got a ham and cheese croissant and a churro muffin. I do wish they had a few more items to choose from; A cookie, maybe some sort of muffins, scones? A little more variety. I would recommend a few more syrups like LAVENDAR-VANILLA(hint*hint*) Thank you! I'll be back for another Strawberry latte. read more

I do not get over to Magpie nearly enough! This is probably due to lack of parking whilst also being right on the edge of the walkable West of Wells neighborhood which turns out to be a little less walkable by the roundabout. This coffee shop is pretty minimalist both in aesthetic and menu offerings. The drink menu is straight forward without many frills. The coffee bean is the true star at this shop. Even the latte packs a punch, so make sure you are in the mood for a true coffee. I prefer to pickup beans so that I can enjoy Magpie's unique roasts from the comfort of my own home. The barista will grind the beans to the specific grain for your at-home coffee maker. I just have a plain old drip... I have never had a barista at Magpie scoff at my basic coffee making game which actually goes a long way for me! People with simple coffee making devices can still enjoy complex coffee roasts! read more

Found out about Magpie Coffee some time ago, but never stopped by to visit. After wrapping up a brief meet at a neighboring business I stopped in to take a call and grab a coffee. This is a cute little coffee shop. It gives rustic vibes with a vintage touch! It was not too busy, but then again I was not there too long to see things pick up. The staff that assisted me was nice. This spot is great if you're looking for a more quiet atmosphere to enjoy your coffee and just chill. Will try to stop by again when in the neighborhood to try other items. read more

A delightful place to stop in for a morning pick me up. I'm not huge on coffee my self but my husband is. He judges every coffee shop by their Cortado and he raved about this one! He said it was an excellent shot beautifully balanced with a touch of cream. I had some of their Morning Mist tea and it was a lovely pick me up. Cute coffee shop. I like my coffee less acidic than what I had (didn't ask about the beans; had a cortado). They use califa oat milk. I think people who like verve or ritual might like this place. Friendly staff. Also tried the pomegranate donut but that was too sweet and tasted really artificial so maybe skip that. read more

One drink that I love when I'm out and about is a cortado. There aren't a ton of places that do it well. Magpie is one of the places that make an excellent drink. They roast in-house, so the coffee is fresh and vibrant. The service is quick and pleasant. The building itself reminds me of hanging out in your friends garage in the best way. I finally stopped in to this charming coffee shop. The service is delightful. The ambiance is great. I was there a little before closing so I don't know if it's always as empty as it was. I've been a bit of a coffee connoisseur since the 1970's. My husband and I used to go to one of the very first coffee/tea shops in NYC. We experimented with so many different beans. I tell this story because in all the years I've been buying beans I've never had any that resemble what I got at Magpie. The beans are tiny and have no sheen. There was little aroma when I opened the bag and when I brewed the coffee. As for flavor, it's not bad but it's very mild which is not what I'm used to. The woman behind the counter told me all their roasts are medium to light and it was my choice to try something new. The bag has zero info on it. Maybe there was a card in the shop which offers details on what beans are used, whether they are organic and responsibly sourced. This info is usually provided by the roaster on the bag or in the shop. I'm disappointed with the lack of info. If I could give Magpie a rating of 3.5 I would. I'm giving them a 4 because the pluses outweigh the minuses. But I don't think I will be going back. read more

This is a really nice cafe to chat with friends or get some work done. It's a lot more spacious than it seems from the outside. There's great lighting in the morning. Magpie is some of the best coffee in town. The vibe is cool/chill and mildly austere. To me it's a sign they're focused on the coffee, and I'm happy with that. Magpie is one of my favorite remote offices. Black cup of coffee is about $3 and pre-Covid it was self serve. Everyone has ample space, and generally keeps to themselves. Sometimes they have a good truck out back, but they always have a few snacks available too. I really enjoy magpie at home. Magpie is a great place. I found out about it on Reddit and had to check it out. I needed a semi quite coffeehouse to take a very important 4+ hour exam and this place was just that. It's not library silent but is a lot quieter than other coffee shops around Reno. I ordered a chai and unfortunately was charged for one before being notified that they were sold out which was a bit unfortunate. But the barista quickly asked me if I wanted something else and I opted for a latte which was delicious! So it wasn't too bad. I went back the next day because I really enjoyed my experience the previous day and this time I got a matcha. The matcha was delicious and not overpowered by milk which is always great. Unfortunately when asking the barista what donuts they had, she stated that she didn't know any of the flavors as they were from a business down the road and "my guess was as good as hers..." that's not really good business as what if allergies were present within myself or other guests? I've heard of this coffee place from multiple people and finally decided to try it with me fiancé. It's near the end of wells ave. And I was surprised by how nice, cool and quaint. They have nice wooden and metal tables outside, an indoor outdoor feel with opened windows, a cute magpie sign, and exposed wooden beams inside with stringed lights. I did not know they have their own roasts as well, Sumatra, pica pica, specialty, and some more. They offer the standard coffee, we got a vanilla latter and a dirty vanilla chai which were both pretty good. They also offer herbal tonics and teas. I can't wait to try those next time! Staff was also very nice! I do wish they had more specialty drinks to choose from and can be a little pricey but is just as expensive as other coffee shops (about $6 a coffee if you get a flavored latte). Drove past multiple coffee shops to get to this one this morning because I think Magpie coffee is some of the best I've had in Reno! I always need tons of cream in my coffee, but with theirs, I only need a splash! It's smooth and not sour at all. They also have a really cute space, with plenty of room inside and big windows that open up to the street. Outside are cute tables and big umbrellas. If you are looking for a cup of coffee with no frills, this is your place. The decor in minimalist and not a lot of seating. I ordered a cappuccino, asking for low or non fat milk. The choices were regular milk or oat milk. Hmmmm, maybe more choices could be added. The cappuccino was good and beautifully presented. Food choices were few, so we only had our cappuccinos. My only complaint is that the service, while friendly, was a bit busy chatting with the customers hanging out at the bar. The service here is just awful. We went in this morning (9/26/21), and there was one couple ahead of us in line, and nobody else in the place. The barista proceeded to chat with the couple (his friends) while he slowly made their two drinks over the course of the next ten minutes (not hyperbole), and then continued to chat with them after he finished making them. He never even acknowledged our presence. So unfortunately I can't speak to the quality of the coffee, but I can sure tell you all about what the barista's been up to, and how he used to work at Hub, but he got let go during the pandemic, and Mark didn't hire him back, and how his friends are enjoying their stay at the Peppermill, etc., etc. read more
