It finally came time for me to get glasses (first time) and I had FDA money to spend. I chose Woodbury Family Optometry based on being a VSP Edge location, close to home, and the reviews seemed good. When I walked in I was greeted warmly. I already completed my paperwork online so it was a short wait. Afterwards I got my eye tests from the technician lady (didn't catch her name) then got moved into the exam room where Dr. Ken examined me and did a series of tests. He took his time to examine me and explained everything he was doing and what he was looking for. After the exam was complete I was seen by Jeremy, the other technician and he explained my insurance coverage very thoroughly to me and let me take my time trying on and choosing my frames. Then he went over lens coatings and took my payment. They said my glasses will take about 2-3 weeks since it's end of year (busy season). I spent over an hour with him and he is very patient and respectful. My expectations for this optometrist (Dr. Kenneth Fukuda) were way too high, based on the normal experiences I've had with optometrists in Hawaii, I figured the quality of service would at least reach a comparable level. The "pictures of the eyes" were effectively about a dozen, maybe more, utterly blinding lights I'm forced to stare directly at, it was literally worse than looking directly at the Sun from Earth, a dozen times over! And I wasn't told it would cost extra, but I found out when I paid at the end, how convenient for the optometrist. I paid a $25 deposit to reserve the appointment, but somehow, my out of pocket payment for the annual exam was $99... so, I asked, was the charge $124, then, since we're subtracting the $25, and the assistant said yes... I'm not really buying that $124 is the copay for an annual visit, I'd much sooner believe that they just stole my $25 deposit from a $99 copay. Also, Dr. Fukuda (because, I just don't want to call him Dr. Ken like he told me to) kept pushing daily contacts on me and I said I don't want to pay more for dailies when I've been using biweeklies for a long time, and he'd only give me samples for the dailies, so at the end of the exam I got a quote for dailies vs biweeklies from the assistant and the biweeklies came out to $190 (there's supposed to be a $100 rebate but Acuvue's link to get the rebate doesn't work so I'll need to call them) and the quote for the dailies was about $900 and with insurance it was like $600... I told the optometrist that I don't want dailies and I see no value in it, but he insisted that I won't need to buy solution (I still would!) and with that kind of a price difference, he'd likely make much more money by selling me dailies. The optometrist also LOWERED my left eye power and told me to test it out by arguing that eyes get worse when the power is too strong, but the power definitely wasn't too strong and with the lower power in the left eye I had a hard time reading faraway street signs while driving so immediately after I parked, I called the office and said I need my old prescription back. I'd say eyesight worsens when you don't have the right prescription, not when you do. Then, he reviews detailed features of the eye photos and when I ask questions about things he's telling me about my susceptibilities to various things like glaucoma and such, he brushes them off and has zero interest in educating the patient. Not only this but the overall tone of the whole appointment was rather begrudging on the optometrist's part like he's just rehearsing lines to himself mostly that he's repeated for years and years, it was a little bit like The Twilight Zone. I think if he brightens up and tries to be friendlier with patients, he'd do much better as an optometrist as he seems to have some skill, although clearly not the most trustworthy in my experience. Melissa, the assistant, was very nice, at least, even though she's the one that told me $99 was my copay even though I'd paid a $25 deposit. Lastly, the "waiting area" is super ridiculous, it's basically one chair that faces towards the entrance of the office in the middle of the area where they sell glasses and such, so my back is towards the optometrist and assistant unless I try to swivel sideways but there's no room to feel comfortable or even situated at all. I'm hard-pressed to find anything that left a positive impression, other than the eye exam equipment they have is good and the analysis is good enough but of course lacking in education for the patient which is supposed to make things make sense at the end of the day. read more

I love how the Dr. takes his time and really explains everything he is examining and why. Really enjoyed meeting Dr Fukuda's partner for a contact lens appointment this afternoon. She was thorough and friendly and really paid attention to my needs as a contact lens patient. I was a little shocked to see that they charged me over 2x more for my Air Optix Night + Day contact lenses. I was able to find them online for $55-75 dollars and they billed me $126 a box. Great service but I would highly suggest taking your Rx and buying your contacts online instead of any idea of convenience of just picking them up from the office here because they are extremely marking them up. This was my first visit and I saw Dr. Troung. She was fantastic. I came in with questions about migraines and eye fatigue. She answered all my questions. The newer technology made the eye exam so much easier. I didn't feel so much pressure when guessing which number was the clearer choice. I also liked how they put your prescription in a pair of glasses - so you "see" what your actual glasses will be like once you get them. The selection of glasses were nice and not too expensive. When I have started seeing a retinal specialist every 6 months per the referral from the optometrist, why I need to make another appointment with the optometrist for the same problem every 6 months? By the way, in my recent eye exam Dr. Fukuda even prescribed an inaccurate prescription that resulted a lot of trouble when I tried to get a new glasses based on it and the prescription was corrected by another optometrist in the same location later on. read more

He has a very friendly, welcoming demeanor and is very approachable. An excellent Dr. and nice person. They had my insurance info prepared so when it was time to check out everything had been accounted for....all I had to do was select glasses and pay the difference. Very painless in every way. I would avoid this establishment at all causes, especially Dr. Fukuda. He has a new set of staff members every time there, that should already tell you something, although the current staff is very nice Dr. Fukuda is extremely rude. My wife comes home in tears every time after her appt. because Dr. Fukuda wants to berate and argue with her as she's honest about her eyes and sight. He has zero manners and does not know how to treat the paying customer, it's almost like he thinks we're the entitled ones to see him? If the doctor has to pull a customer aside at the end of the appt. to try and apologize but then goes into a conversation of saying, you just seem like you want to be in charge, your probably use to always being right, you seem to think you know more than me??? I took my teen daughter who has severe red and irritated eyes. We came to this place three times and Dr. Fukuda prescribed her steroid and antibiotic eye drops, assuming she has an allergy. Those drops didn't work and today when we came back the third time he again told us it is an allergy without taking any additional tests. He told us to treat her red eyes as an allergy and to take pills like Benadry. All i asked was to take additional tests to confirm or exclude the allergy before my child would take meds that can be unnecessary. But he didnt listen, he just insisted on taking pills and if it wont help try something else. Really??????? How about get right diagnosis. Super positive team, but super weird service. I moved to Irvine this year, and Woodbury Family Optometry was highly recommended by friends AND Yelp. While everyone working here seems friendly and warm, the actual service I received has been awkwardly suboptimal. Some examples: *When I came in for my scheduled eye exam in June, I was at the office for almost two hours. They apologized for being so behind that day. They had some "emergencies" that set the schedule back. *After my eye exam, I told them I was going to get glasses through their office with my insurance, and contacts from another vendor since I got such a good price on them online. When I placed my order for contacts online, I got an email from this office requesting that I place the contact order with them FOR A HIGHER PRICE, so I could "keep things going through their office." We had SEVERAL rounds back and forth via email before they'd approve my prescription online. Why would I pay more, AND come to your office to pick them up? *The glasses I ordered were wrong multiple times. I had to visit on FOUR DIFFERENT OCCASIONS over most of June AND July, and each time there was something wrong with my glasses. It would have been a real shame if I didn't already have a pair of glasses at home, while I was waiting for my new frames. None of these issues are that big of a deal on their own, but together it's a pattern of bad customer service. PROPS: One of the best and most thorough eye exams I've ever received. I've seen multiple Optometrists over the years and finally realized that I should get my eyes rechecked after realizing that my prescription had expired, so got a rec from a friend to visit Dr. Ken at Woodbury Optometry. The exam itself was fine and service was quick. My real rave review is for Jeremie, the optician. I have a flat nose bridge and have struggled to find opticians who are able to adjust glasses to fit my face. On my first visit, I brought 3 pairs of glasses with me with the hopes that someone could help with adjustments. Jeremie was so helpful and understanding of my issue. He was able to adjust my frames and even recommended and changed out the nosepads on one pair. On a later visit, after receiving a new pair of glasses, I had a different optician adjust the nosepads but ended up going back a few days later to have Jeremie make some changes. He was again very understanding and incredibly patient with my requests. His attention to detail and expertise in his field was very impressive. I walked in to simply schedule an appt for a contact fitting. Figured it would take seconds, it was not easy at all. They want all your info, and even a down payment, so I ended up cancelling the appt. I asked them to delete all my information (hoping they do) and walked out. Got on the phone and called people's optical and they scheduled me within seconds for the next day, no hassle or questions. This place must be popular as there appts seem to be fairly booked, but not my style. I don't like how they make you take an unnecessary test for like $30 something dollars as a requirement of my appt. I'm glad they disclosed it, but didn't feel right. I don't like how they ask for the last 4 of my SSN. I don't like how they make you deposit $20 something dollars for your appt. Yeahh I just didn't feel comfortable. Dr. Fukada is the best optometrist I've had (I've only had 3 before him but so what). He explained everything happening and what to expect. Examples include: im gonna do x, but won't touch your eye. Here's your eye - this is what I expect and this is what I see. I felt extremely comfortable talking to him about my eyes due to how knowledgeable he was. Even when it came to daily contacts vs bi-weekly contacts, he put to rest my concerns over waste using one or the other. He also explained the advantages of some contacts over other and advancements in how contacts are developed. The highlight was not having to get my eyes dilated! They have this scanning machine that shines a bright green light in your eye. It's incredibly blinding and a bit uncomfortable but it beats dilation by a mile! I recommend coming here if you want a more personal eye doctor who seems to genuinely care about you and has great technology to simplify the process. read more

I got my eyes checked out about a week ago and now dont remember what I was going to write -________- Anywho...I was curious...an optometry location with such a HIGH RATING?? is that possible? I was curious and just had to find out for myself. Upon entering, I was greeted by JESUS. He explained the whole procedure, did the usual protocol, made me fill out some paper...yada yada yada. He then took me in the back...did some test with me and then explained what was going on and what the test measured. After that was done, I was in the room with Dr. Ken. Very nice doctor...and very informative as well. I felt very relaxed and comfortable...a very good bonus. I had a great experience at this up to date facility and was helped by a very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Dr. Fukuda was the first optometrist to ever explain thoroughly to me what each machine or test was for. He was very patient with me and I did not feel pressured in any way (I'm often pretty difficult to deal with because when you look through that thing and the doctor asks 1 or 2, then 3 or 4, they all usually look the same!) He even went through my retinal scans to inform me what he was looking for and what the signs were for deterioration and all that bad stuff. Rory guided me through the process of updating the prescription in my current frames. I did not feel pressured to purchase any new frames from them and they were more than happy to explain the different types of lens they offered and pricing upfront. He was not even hesitant to give me my prescription in case I wanted to get my lens done somewhere else either, but in the end I returned and got my lens done here. I felt there were no hidden costs or any shady business going on. I was given an estimate of 7-10 business days before my glasses were finished but they came a few days sooner than expected! Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit here and would definitely recommend my friends and family to come to this office as well. They do a great job of communicating with you through phone and email. Dr Ken and the staff at this Optometry is great!!! I made an appointment to get my eyes checked, and the entire process was really efficient. I arrived just on time and didn't have to wait long, the eye exam was much more thorough than I thought it would be. The last time I got my eyes checked it was a super simple procedure and the glasses I got ended up giving me headaches, a clear sign my prescription was not right. Dr Ken was patient to explain why that happened and provided some suggestions After that, I just shopped around their store for glasses. The staff were really friendly and helpful. If you're looking for a particular model that is not available in the store, they will order it online for you. Fortunately I found a pair in store that I really liked and got that sent in to the lab. Barely took a few weeks for my glasses to be done, super efficient! I think there are some issues with my prescription as I'm still getting slight headaches.
