Just a quickie.... Woodchips has become our 'go to' restaurant in Lapeer whenever my wife and I don't feel like cooking, or we're meeting friends for drinks & dinner. We've rarely been disappointed; when we have, a quick remedy to our satisfaction has followed promptly. And they're always tweaking their recipes, as witnessed by their cornbread and mac & cheese. Stagnation is the mortal enemy of any good restaurant. It appears that Woodchips doesn't intend to get caught in that trap. read more

I was really excited that the lapeer area was getting a good smokehouse. I am still anticipating the lapeer area to get good smokehouse. The only reason why I'm giving it 2 stars is because the service is leaps and bounds better than nearly everything else in town. We ordered the burnt ends for a half priced app. Now these are known and were sold as smokey and crispy goodness. It failed in both regards, they had no smoke flavor and the texture seem like they were microwaved. The brisket sandwich lacked smoke. The Mac and cheese lacked overall flavor and again no smoke in the added brisket. The fries were way overdone and were not comped. When I go to a smokehouse, I better smell smoke when we walk in the door and everything better taste like it. Fail twice. The sauces were ok, slaw was average, corn bread was good The worst point is it cost us over $28 for a half off app, Mac and cheese, and a sandwich (no drinks). read more

Is this the best bbq in the world? No. Is it damn good? Yes yes yes. We went Friday night and arrived early about 4pm before the rush. Our server and I can't remember her name unfortunately (black hair, glasses also bartended) was awesome. Our third person was running late and we were worried about holding up the table. server was very cool about it, we tipped her generously because of her being so cool about it. We started w/ the Brussels sprouts app. and OMG they were so good I ordered them as my 2 sides when I ordered my entrée, which was the Double. I had the ribs and sausage. Definite smoke flavor and nice pink on the ribs. I tried the sauces and chose the Texas. It really complimented the meat. The sausage was ok, it didn't knock my socks off and would order something else on my next visit, of which there will be many. The beer selection is really good with some nice selections from U.P. breweries ( Psst hey Patrick,get some Black Rocks brewery beers in) Lastly we had the chocolate covered bacon, good but didn't get much bacon flavor, maybe thick cut bacon would have worked better with the dark chocolate. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was how warm it was inside. It was only 70 outside but had to 90 inside, everyone was sweating bullets. This is just what Lapeer needed! Living in Grand Rapids, we have all the terrible chain BBQ places, so I always make a point to visit Woodchips when I'm in Lapeer. Pros: staff, location, catering, BBQ sauces, menu and beer/drink selection. I love the pulled chicken, fried pickles, cornbread, brisket, Mac n cheese, burnt ends, and wings. You get your own choice of sauces (homemade) -- this is not the like sweet baby ray's "BBQ sauce," so if you're wanting a processed and high fructose content sauce, it won't be like that Cons: they do not take reservations and they can run out of burnt ends sometimes (very common in good BBQ shops...even at Arthur Bryant's in KC). My boyfriend and I have been here twice, the first time by accident (no prior knowledge, just happened to be in the area) and the second time by choice, and we were very happy both times. The drinks, food and service were all excellent, and I was impressed to see (one of the?) owners seating people himself on a Saturday night. *bonus points!* The house pinot grigio was excellent, the 'Rise and Shine' burger, the BBQ eggrolls, and the BBQ chicken tacos were all winners in our book. Fries that came with the burger could have been a little more crispy, but IMHO, that was minor. We have already bragged to our friends about this place, and plan to go back again. I was in Lapeer for a high school football game and had some time to kill. I chose this place based on the positive reviews. I tried the chicken with a side of brisket, cauliflower and Mac & cheese. I usually don't order chicken at BBQ places because it is generally boring but I picked it because it was on special. I'm glad I picked it because it was the best smoked chicken I've ever had. The service was also extremely friendly and attentive, beyond excellent. I thought the beer selection was just ok, but pretty good for a small town like Lapeer. Flash fried cauliflower with buffalo ranch (serve suggestion) was awesome. The only thing that keeps me from giving this place 5 stars was the brisket. I'm sorry, but it was dry and relatively flavorless. I think they just used too lean of a cut and didn't smoke it long enough. The house made sauces were very good. My favorites were the Michigan apple and the intensely hot pepper sauce. It helped bring some flavor to the brisket. read more

Great friendly staff with great service and great food. I love bbq sauce on my food but the pulled pork needed nothing, it was perfect. You could taste the wood smoked into the meat. The lightning burger with pulled pork on top of it was awesome. The Reuben was really good, just a little too soggy. Fries were good and the nachos were good and i loved the decor. If you're around Lapeer you have to try this place. Their homemade bbq sauces are really good, the witche's brew is sooooo good. read more

First visit to Woodchips Barbecue in Lapeer, Mi. Ordered the Carolina platter with the pit beans and corn bread sides. Portions were small for the $25. price per plate price tag, the chicken, pulled pork and pit beans were good but the ribs were seriously over cooked and the corn bread was dry and served cold. Food and service was great! Monday is Mexican Monday so they had specials on margarita's, Coronas, tacos and their Woodchips nachos which we weren't expecting. Their Mac and cheese and cornbread were really good and their portions are big! I should be able to get two lunches out of my leftovers. I got the pulled pork and it was great. We have been to Woodchips more than a handful times since they first opened and we are so excited to have a favorite restaurant that is right in downtown Lapeer! Every time we have friends and family visiting, we bring them in and everyone has been very impressed. They have a great drink selection for mixed drinks and for a draft beers, especially of Michigan breweries. I absolutely LOVE the bacon bourbon bloody Mary! Our favorite foods include the burnt ends appetizer, the bbq quesadilla, the Mac and cheese, the pulled pork, and all of their sandwiches that we have tried. Also, the rolls that they use for the sandwiches are FANTASTIC! I can't wait to try even more of their menu. The only downside that we have found is that it is fairly small inside, so if you are going on a weekend night, it's best to go early. We visited again this week and we will be back many more times in the future! read more

We moved to Lapeer a few months ago and ordered take out here for the first time today. We were not disappointed. The pulled pork was phenomenal, and because of the stay at home order, we didn't get to have the experience others have, but they sent home several of their sauces for us to try and they were all amazing. The Mac-n-cheese was flavorful, and thick. We ordered the brisket egg rolls and oh my gosh they were so crispy, not to mention they were even better with the dipping sauce. My husband ordered the pork sandwich with bacon and cheddar and he said it was probably the best sandwich he has ever had. We both laughed because our least favorite part of the meal was the cornbread and even that was sooo good. The staff was informative, beyond friendly, and super considerate of the fact that we were new to the area. read more

This is not the place to go if you have any hint of a headache, or are a bit tired from hours on the road (so loud!)... and definitely do not accept to sit at the tiny and cramped two seat tables along the beautiful "Woodchips" wall if you can help it. A seat at the bar would be better. We were placed by the door marked "Employees Only" and that door slammed shut with staff coming in and out enough times during our lunch to make us aware of it being the worst table in the room. So, my review is not as much about the food, which was tasty and pricey, but the surroundings, which can sometimes be as important as the food when you decide if it is worth a return visit. *** Also you should probably remove the Yelp check-in coupon from your business if the dessert items aren't part of your menu any longer. Great food, great service, great location, at a very reasonable price. Woodchips offers up some pretty decent BBQ. Personally, I like the Rise and Shine Lapeer burger which comes with an egg on it. The BBQ, though not as good as anything you'd find in the south, is still quite good and really the best option for miles around. The building is pretty cool with stripped-down brick walls and wood-plank flooring. The meals are served on metal baking sheets. In Lapeer, even in all of the Thumb, Woodchips stands out as a unique and fun and delicious establishment. I definitely recommend it. read more

I love the food here and drive about 45 minutes to get here (it's totally worth the drive)! I always have had excellent service, until today. I called in a to go order and was told it would be about 25 minutes. No big deal, I was about that far away when I called. I arrived just past the 25 minute mark and paid for my order. I then waited more than an additional 20 minutes for my food. And when it was handed to me the only thing said to me was asking if I was already cashed out. No apologies for the delay. She discovered that we were newbies - we found Woodchips through this app on a drive home. Amber explained in full detail all the things this foodie loves to hear; all fresh ingredients, no artificial anything, all local, homemade sauces & rubs, no artificial sweeteners for your tea! They actually have Stevia!! We ordered the ribs, and the winner, winner chicken along with coleslaw and baked beans and Mac & Cheese as sides. Oh, and the Brussels sprouts appetizer..... can I say AMAZING! The ribs were perfect, fell off the bone, just the right amount of smoke. The chicken just as good.
