Actually found this place on Yelp. Wanted to try something different. We walked in off the street, hostess was super perky and friendly- but told us we should have called ahead as Saturday's are busy, and that they were! BUT we would only have a 10-20 minute wait. Not bad! So we went and sat at the bar while tables became available. Only "thumbs down" I can give them is they messed up our wait/seating. The hostess had put us down for "2" and we had told her "4". So when they went to seat us at a 2 person table, we were a little surprised. Anyway, it all worked out...4-top became available with a short wait and we were on our way. Food was amazing, service was great and the wait time in food was VERY short. We were very happy. Atmosphere is cool, music was good and drinks were strong! Overall, I'd give it 4* experience and definitely recommend it! We will be going back for sure! read more

Small, locally owned restaurant that deserves your attention. The staff (Shawn was our server) and food were spot on. We were given suggestions from our server although she recommended just about the whole menu. We tried the brussel sprouts, fried pickles and BBQ egg rolls for apps. All were good but the egg rolls were the best. The drinks are made from scratch, no mixes. They were tasty but a little on the weak side. For dinner we ordered the brisket (chopped and sliced), pulled pork and the pulled chicken. They were all good. Nice smokey flavor and not dried out. I like the sauce on the side so you get what you want. A note about the sauces. They have a wide variety with specials also brought out. We tried the new one with ghost peepers and it didn't disappoint. If you like heat, they bring it. Our sides included Brussel sprouts, beans, cole slaw, mac n cheese and sweet potato fries. I think the mac n cheese was the only thing I wouldn't get again. Not bad just not my style. There was also a 1/2 off dessert coupon on yep but we were so full we had to pass. Before a movie my friends and I wanted some BBQ and my friend being from the south were understandably skeptical of northern BBQ but wow. They loved it and so did I! We started off with appetizers, some bbq chicken egg rolls and fried pickles, so good! I got The Eagle chicken sandwich and the Chicken Quesadilla. Everything was so tender and delicious. My friends were impressed with the sweet potato fries and the burgers! We will definitely be coming back and our server Ashley was great, enthusiastic, attentive, and knowledgeable. I had a burger with pulled pork on it. It was fresh and tasted good. However, the pulled pork wasn't smokey like I like. To me an authentic bbq place has to have that smokey goodness. You need to know you are in a bbq place as soon as you enter the place and get smacked with that smoke, and this place wasn't like that. I got a side of mac and cheese, it was really good. Girlfriend got a pulled pork sandwich, which was also good, but again, no smokey goodness. All of the food was of high quality, but to be a high end bbq place you need more than that. I also ordered a sweet margarita. I don't recall what the flavor was. Something like raspberry or strawberry. Anyways I have never had anyone put salt on a rim of a sweet margarita, only sugar. Well this place puts salt on the rim and the drink was super salty and gross. I understand that a standard lime margarita comes with salt on the rim, but not sweet ones. And the drink itself shouldn't taste like saltwater. I sent it back and they happily made me a new one with sugar on the rim. No more salt, but it didn't taste that good. I guess you shouldn't order a margarita from a non-Mexican restaurant. :) Waitress was pleasant. If you want good BBQ go to Bad Brads in Lake Orion. Everything I have had there is excellent. I ordered a carry out of their Jambalaya entree. The meal was tasty but hardly any meat. The sausage was the size of a nickle both in thickness and diameter, and only about 5 pieces in the dish. The other meat was chicken and only a few strands. The meal was $13.99 and probably cost them under $1 considering the amount of meat in the dish. Extremely disappointing! read more

I was pretty impressed with this place. I tried all the sauces and liked all but one, that is a miracle for me, I am very picky about BBQ sauce. I got pulled chicken, macaroni & cheese, and mashed potatoes. All were very good, the potatoes were my favorite and the corn bread was great too. This place has gone way down from what it used to be just a year ago. Stay away, far away from the over priced terrible burnt ends. My order came with 5 pieces of brisket for $15.00, what a nerve to charge this price! For this you expect to get something amazing, try again! One piece was simply a mouth full of 100% fat. Another piece was exactly as described, burnt, hard, charred and inedible. Seriously, $15.00 for this garbage, are you out of your mind! It took me 3 days of calling to actually available for this, boy did I regret this effort. I also bought the worst pulled pork I have ever had. I was raised in Memphis, where the standard of pulled pork was very high. This place has no clue what the real thing should taste like. It was tender, but totally lacking in flavor, with no smoke ring classically associated with this cut of meat. Imagine taking a shoulder and baking it in an oven with no seasoning or smoke flavor, that is what they serve. You are looking for what they term 'Dr. Brown', a well seasoned dry rubbed crunchy, smokey outer layer of pork shoulder. These people have no idea what they are doing. in Memphis they would be out of business in one week. One half pound for $10.50, are you crazy!! But the biggest disappointment comes with the horrible selection of sauces. All are terrible and most taste as if they are generic supermarket versions. Think artificial smoke flavoring, that is what their versions rely upon. I did like the fried brussels sprouts, but the overly sweet corn bread was gross. What a disappointment, what a rip off, avoid this place at all costs.! read more

This is one of the best places to sit, eat, and unwind, with an amazingly comfortable atmosphere for downtown events (we sat outside). The use of mason jars and beer holders is nice, fits with the vibe of BBQ. The waitresses were not only pretty but were great with keeping drinks refilled and checking on everyone. Food was a bit of a wait but well worth it! (Maybe it was because we were so hungry, haha) The BBQ sauces weren't great, either really sweet or really hot. Went to Woodchips yesterday for a birthday celebration. Mom, dad , and my wife had the macaroni and cheese which was cooked perfectly. I had the Blt salad and the smoked wings which were awesome. Pumpkin beer and an Oktoberfest sealed the deal for a perfect birthday meal. read more

This is one fine restaurant situated in what appears to be a quaint town of a few thousand folks. It is not large, maybe 15 tables and a bar that can seat 10. The service is friendly and will satisfy the inquisitive traveler, such as I. I learned all the meats are from a local processor, and the side dishes are homemade. No stuff out of a can. I had a sampler platter and it was more than I should have eaten, but I couldn't stop. Love the dry rub and the selection of wet sauces was a nice surprise. Very goood selection of beers on tap and if I had a driver would have gone for the Whiskey Flight. I could give them a 5 star easily except, I don't like eating my meat from a tray lined with wax paper. I know I see it often, but I personally don't care for experience. I will be back when in Lapeer and will try to find a driver :-). read more

My husband and I had our first visit at Woodchips. Even as vegetarians we had superb service. We got the veg out wrap which was so good! Perfect smoked flavor in the mushroom. My husband was surprised with a made up veg burger. The chefs amazed us with a burger with vegetables, cheese and smoked mushrooms. I hope they find a name for it and add it to the menu. Our waitress Jillian was amazing. Fun and helpful with making sure we had a great meal. The customer service went above and beyond and we look forward to return. Thank you Woodchips for an amazing Thanksgiving Day meal! We ordered the prepared meal for our family Thanksgiving which we celebrated Saturday. Woodchips had the meal ready for us at Wiches (owned by the same owner) in Oxford so we didn't even need to drive to Lapeer. The meal came with very specific instructions for us to warm the meal. The smoked turkey was moist and so full of flavor better then any turkey I have made (and I'm a good cook). The mashed potatoes, gravy and stuffing were all homemade seriously like I had made them. The Brussels sprouts were completely fresh. The butternut squash bisque soup was also over the top. To sum it up this was not restaurant food it was completly homemade food! read more

Located downtown so of course has the super cute little store front. (Downtown store fronts get me everytime) walk in a sit with a group that was already waiting for us. Service is very friendly and attentive. Don't come here if your looking for a quiet evening out, it is a smaller place so voices carry and tables are close together. To me personally it makes it a fun atmosphere you can laugh loud and have a great time without getting side eyes. Now to the food. Woodchip nachos. Holy wow they were amazing! They were topped with brisket, melty cheese, a sweet BBQ sauce, tomato, onion and jalapeños. Delicious. I feel like every time I order nachos somewhere they are weak. Really 3.5 and very promising. We stopped on a beautiful Sunday right before a big lunch rush. It seemed like our server was assigned to the whole restaurant, as she served all the tables on the patio and seemed to be busy inside as well. She did a nice job introducing the menu and highlights and really sold the lightning burger. However, it seemed like she was hurrying us to order a couple minutes later. Husband ordered the lightning burger (only so-so, too greasy) with sweet potato fries that came with maple sauce (five stars each!), and I had the pulled chicken (very good and huge portion) with Mac and cheese (excellent) and Brussels sprouts (also very good). Husband got frustrated because our server didn't refill his water despite saying she would. I think a couple others around us were getting frustrated by the slow service as well. It seemed like the server was doing her best, and adding another server or someone to help her run food and drinks would have helped. Would come back for smoked meats and the awesome sides. After some back and forth with the owner/manager named Patrick, I do believe that they really care about service here, which is a major part of having a good restaurant. Although my dining experience was lacking, if I had spoken up about it I believe they would have done everything possible to correct the issues, and most were correctable. Went on a Tuesday night-we were not busy, ordered our food and took a long time, when it arrived it was ice cold, returned it to the manager and they brought it back out, again ice cold except the chicken. Poor food service execution and management need some training. We paid our bill plus 20% tip and told the waitress about our poor food quality, she should have brought over the manger to discuss- we were not looking for anything but some constructive criticism. This place is a hidden gem in my opinion. It's right in downtown Lapeer. Most people probably miss it because it's not right off the highway. They have awesome BBQ. It is a little place but they get you in quickly or you can order and drink at the bar. read more

We choose WoodChips as our Valentine's Dinner, since we both love BBQ. It might not have been the most romantic of dinners, but it was super delicious! We shared the Burnt Ends as an appetizer, then both of us had their chowder and then shared a platter dinner of chicken and pork with roasted Brussel sprouts and French fries as our sides. We loved everything we tried. We have been back only once, but when we did we were not disappointed with the pulled pork sandwich and the potato salad. Truly good food!! We can't wait to go back, the staff was courteous, knowledgeable, & helpful. The food was great, we are big fans of bbq so it was nice to fine another place to go. We had the burn ends, pulled pork & ribs all were excellent. We got a chance to talk with the owner & he told us a new micro brewery was going in next door!!! You will not get the smokehouse atmosphere because they have to smoke their meats off site, but that in no way affects their flavor. We'll be back & bring a few friends with us the next time!
