I have heard nothing but good things about this place, so my husband and I decided to try it out tonight. For a Saturday night, and the fact that it is Valentine's Day, the place should have been packed. It was maybe half full, never a good sign. It is a very small place and our first mistake was sitting so close to the door. Freezing cold air every time someone opened it. The food was okay, it came out in literally 5 minutes and was just warm. It was obviously pre-made and (poorly) warmed up. The metal tray our food came served in reminded me of a dissection tray. I couldn't help but wonder if they'd been re-purposed from the recently defunct local high school. Decent food for the price, but don't expect anything fancy. I think it would be a great place for a younger crowd wanting cheap drinks and food to soak it up. If that's the crowd they're aiming for, they've succeeded. read more

This was our first time and from the minute we walked it was amazing! Polite upbeat staff! Our server talked me into a raspberry drink he made himself, food was quick and delicious. We had 2 bbq brisket quseadelila and kids mac and cheese. He checked on us frequently. The bill was delivered without being asked for perfectly timed! First and most important, quality of food was outstanding! Tried the chili and cornbread; tasted great and cornbread was outstanding. Great flavor and soo moist! Had the rise and shine burger; lovingly put together and moist. The bun was very complimentary to the burger. Coleslaw homade style was great. The mac and cheese was awesome! It was creamy and we'll balanced; not over powering and not bland, just right. My husband and I couldn't believe how EVERYTHING was so great. We will be returning! Woodchips sells its BBQ in my work cafeteria. I was exited about a BBQ restaurant as a lunch choice, until I opened my food cartoon. For $10, I got two tiny pieces half pieces of dried out brisket. When I watched the server hunting around for pieces of brisket for my order, I thought she was picking out the best pieces. Boy was I wrong. My side of coleslaw was in a decent-size container, but the container was half empty. Bad food, tiny portions and big prices -- avoid this place. I hope my employer finds a better restaurant to sell food in the cafeteria. read more

Stopped in for lunch and I will start out by saying that it's very hard to find a good restaurant in this area. So I was overall pretty happy with the place given it's location and compared to other options. The food was good, pulled pork was good and all of their sauces were surprisingly good. Hand cut sweet potato fries were a nice touch although they were way over salted. Ambiance good, service marginal. My big gripe and reason for not giving four stars is the drink prices. I ordered a "tall" (16oz...which is the standard size most places) craft beer and had another. I was shocked to see $18.50 for my 2 beers. Glad I wasn't paying....$9.25 for a pint at lunch is pretty ridiculous in this neck of the woods. I would avoid coming here again if I'm planning to order a beer. read more

I went here for the first time last week and LOVED my meal! I ordered the portabella sandwich and sweet potato fries. The sandwich was delicious! Thank you for allowing our dogs to sit with us on your patio and have a wonderful lunch. The tilted Axis turned us away then after we sat down to a wonderful lunch tilted axis then allowed another couple to sit with their dog on their lap and eat lunch. Tilted axis just lost a great tip and a loyal customer to woodchips that had a supper friendly staff and great burgers and beer. Very good Ribs and Sliced Brisket! They provide 5 flavorful sauces at the table, but I'm not sure what to use them for, because the meat was very tasty on its own! The place is small, but I did not feel crowded. Capacity is 99 people. Bathrooms were clean & roomy, but Not heated. (Makes for a Cold visit during winter months.) Staff all smiles and professional (not personal, strictly professional) but nice. Wait time after ordering was normal and as expected. Staff all seemed like the enjoyed working there, which is a plus. Cole Slaw was just "cole slaw": good, but the same as everywhere else. Baked beans were very flavorful and full of chunks of bacon type meats: 8 out of 10 starts for baked beans. Green beens (fresh, whole) looked wonderfully cooked and flavorful. (Didn't taste. My daughter wouldn't share.) Pulled chicken on sandwich and on salad looked great, also. Would go back! (45 minute drive) Lots on menu to try. I have had better, but this place is very good! Zero Stars!!! We were planning on going to this restaurant, as my husband loves good BBQ. However, my mom and friends just went there this past week and were treated horribly by the manager. My mom and friends had purchased a gift card for $125.00 from this place during the pandemic in support of a locally owned business in hopes to use it when the state finally opened up. When they tried to use their gift card this past week, which they purchased, this restaurant wouldn't honor it. The manager was very rude and was even yelling at my mom's friend. Apparently the owner "wasn't available." One would think that after 1 1/2 yrs of being shut down, a restaurant would at least be respectful to customers not to mention honor a gift card. My mom lost her job because of the pandemic, yet she went out of her way to support a local restaurant. With this type of ethics, this restaurant shouldn't be in business. Who cares about the food if the restaurant is this unethical. read more

As a bit of a BBQ snob I'm not sure how this place has stayed off our radar so long but we're glad we stopped in. Dinner was a Sunday evening and we got seated immediately. Our brussel sprout appetizer was killer and though we've had reuben egg rolls before these were above par. My ribs were perfect and I felt bad even putting a little sauce on them. It's always a bonus to see a place feature their own sauces even if they don't all shine. In our case we loved the Sweet, the Michigan Apple and the Carolina. The kids ordered Eagle sandwiches and the adults split some pulled pork and sausages. Everything was perfect. No time for cocktails that evening but the offerings were intriguing and the Bloody Mary mix was very nice. Despite being a little out of the way for us we won't hesitate to be back. My wife and i came at lunchtime, place was super busy which was great, the owner actually came and sat us, I ordered the 2 little pigs she ordered the taco salad. 2 little pigs was great, especially with the variety of sauces that were on the table of which I chose the michigan apple bbq sauce, so delicious... my pork was a bit cold though but still was enjoyable enough not to say anything..(I did trade my Oberon for a woodford Avenue bourbon since I am a bourbon connoisseur, but I'll get back to that shortly. The taco salad looked great it came in a fried tortilla bowl with sauces and a side of cornbread. Also I love the platters that have the meat packaging paper as tray liner,love it. Service was great, server Ashey was attentive and there whenever we needed, nice work! Woodford Avenue bourbon I got served neat as always....great nose on it smells of orange peel and oak. Not overpowering or spicy, nice frontal taste, with a bit of the signature bourbon spice at the end. We live in lapeer and always come here! This is a very nice little BBQ restaurant located in downtown Lapeer. We both had the pulled pork BBQ platter. The meat was great and the sauces were great as well. Sandy liked the Michigan Apple sauce. It was good but I preferred the Texas sauce and Carolina Gold sauce. The sides were good but we will try others next time. We will be back. Best BBQ I've ever had! I have to rate this as one of my favorite places in Lapeer and all time favorite place for BBQ. Love the atmosphere and it's family friendly. Great selection of drinks from beers to specialty drinks. They even have IBC cream soda for the kids. Speaking of which... even my kids love this place and request us to go here often. Bring Back the homemade wood chips!!!!!! Food really is not consistent, one day it is delicious and then next it is sub par. I'm not sure why this is. I'm not sure if it's different cooks or what. But on a good day The BBQ egg rolls are a most try, the Brussel sprouts are out of this world and the pulled chicken is so moist and flavorful (but sometimes it can be dried out and taste almost burnt)! The homemade chips were amazing but only made an appearance when they first opened for a few months, why they were removed I have no idea but terrible mistake they need to bring them back as a side option or something, as an upgrade from fries. My family and I give this place a 4.5. We'd definitely return. Found it on Groupon and it was a drive to get there, but it was worth the drive. I was bummed that they were sold out of the Burnt Ends, but we tried the BBQ Pork Egg Rolls and Smokie Wings and both were epic! I'd return hete just for apps. We had burgers and sandwiches on this visit. The Lightning burger with bacon, pulled pork, carmelized onions was excellent with a lot of flavor! Highly recommend this. The double bacon cheese burger was a huge hit. The Club was good, but said she'd get the Egg Rolls again for a meal. We tried dessert too. The Cheesecake was very good and kids had the cake balls (you only get 2 if you thought you could share). Service was very friendly. The restaurant was full the whole time we were there. A little bit of a wait on the food, but it worth it. The place is quaint with a bar, a couple high top sitting areas and the rest was regular table seating. It looked clean and cozy. My husband went on a Monday night and had a full rack of ribs, they were fair and a bit on the dry side. Problem was the wait staff were more interested on the tv then the customers. Excellent! By far the best BBQ place we have been to and we will definitely be back. I had the pulled chicken platter with their green beans and sweet potato fries, the chicken was so good I barley ate any sauce with it but all their sauce options are delicious, the green beans were perfect - fresh and seasoned so well and the sweet potato fries were the best I've had at a restaurant! We also started with Fried Pickles and those were great, though I do think they could use bigger pickle spears. The only complaint I had was our service was a little slow but they were packed full and when we got our food, it made up for the wait. Don't go on a Friday afternoon if you have something to do after. we got there at 2 had to sit outside in the hot sun, they have a patio umbrella but didn't open it up till we were there for at least 1/2 hour, and we didn't get our food delivered to the table until 3:15. There was even a lady who arrived after us and got her food ate and left before we got our food. They only took off the appetizers on the bill for our long wait which they knew we had coupons for and gave a few 10 gift cert. For next visit. Don't think that will happen tho. Food was just ok. Sensational barbecue but DO NOT order wine. I have frequented Woodchips a dozen times, including several catering orders. The food is always EXCEPTIONAL. Fantastic pulled pork, burnt ends, and apps. That said, their wine pours are by far the WEAKEST I have ever seen. 2 ounces is an exaggeration of how small they are. When asked about the small pour, we were told it was their "standard five ounce pour." I have worked in the industry and am VERY familiar with how much five ounces is. Highly disappointed with the small wine pours. Ruined a great evening (which was my birthday). Would return but will bring my measuring cup to show them what five ounces is next time. read more
