I can't really recall why or how, but we ended up with some sweets at work from Wooden Table Baking. We got them on Monday, March 25th around 4:30pm. I believe we got the traditional Alfajores: shortbread cookies joined with dulce de leche and rolled in grated coconut, Argentine-style. The cookies were good. Nice and soft. The dulce de leche added a great sweet caramel-y flavor. I'm normally not a huge fan of coconut, but it wasn't too prominent here. Nice afternoon treat. read more

During our humble times at home, I wanted to gift my friend a sweet treat for her birthday during the Shelter in Place. Luckily for me, I stumbled upon Wooden Table Baking and decided to purchase some alfajores for my friend to try. I've had traditional alfajores before and I knew she would also enjoy them as well. I love that Wooden Table Baking offers a wide variety of flavor selections, which is so unique especially for such a rare bakery find that specializes in alfajores (they have truffles too)! The wide flavor selections made it extremely difficult for me to select just one flavor, but to my surprise they also make 3 different sampler boxes to choose from! Each sampler box is $26. The simple sampler has 16 alfajores that includes 4 different flavors (traditional, snickerdoodle, meringue and chocolate). They also have the chocoliscious sampler, which also includes 16 alfajores, all in a different variety of chocolate cookies. The third sampler is the flavor fusion sampler, which includes 16 cookies of unique flavors like lemon ginger and mint chocolate. I ended up choosing the sampler box as I wasn't sure if my friend had tried alfajores before. Sometimes you can't go wrong with traditional! I placed my order online on a Saturday morning. Since they're closed on the weekends, I received a text update the following Monday saying my package was on it's way for delivery, which was perfect since that was my friend's actual birthday (unfortunately, it was only confirmation that the delivery label was created)! Although my friend's box got delivered the day after her birthday (due to my poor planning), Wooden Table Baking's delivery was very quick! I will order more alfajores from Wooden Table Baking again! Just a heads up this place is called Wooden Table Baking Co and you'll see that when you go to select grocery stores in the Berkeley and Oakland area. I did my usual trip to Berkeley bowl west and found these amazing cookies near the bakery area and I knew right away these suckers were going to be awesome. I am very familiar with the Argentine pastries called Alfajores because my mom made them for me throughout the years. I will say that nothing compares to my moms recipe but the ones that are made by the Wooden Table company come pretty close. In truth I was in total shock that an American grocery market would carry such distinct product. I'll say that genuine Argentine Alfajores are a rare find in the U.S. Anywho the package of four Gluten free traditional Alfajores were selling for $4.29, which to me is work it because I'm sure I won't find these anywhere. These little sweet gems were exactly what I expected. They were super moist, soft, crumbling cookie with chewy dulce de leche in the center awesomeness! I got the alfajores sampler for most; they have gift boxes at a range of price points, and you can customize. I was also able to get a no-gluten box for my avoids-gluten coworker. Adorable boxes with a variety of flavors, and so yummy - a big hit with everyone! For a work event today, I placed an order of 270 alfajores! We ordered each flavor that Andrea offers and she was kind enough to deliver the night before our event, with the advice that they taste better after the flavor sits overnight. As we plated for the event today I noticed that they still looked incredibly fresh and as the various bites hit my mouth they tasted AMAZING. The crumble of the cake-like cookie is so soft and perfectly balanced with the sweet stickiness of the dulce de leche fillings. When we opened the box and tasted them we were both blown away!! They were the best Argentine style alfajores we have ever had in the USA. Super impressed, this is what a good alfajor should taste like! the cookie was simple perfection, it just melts in your mouth and it had the perfect amount of dulce de leche in the middle.I cannot wait to buy more. Last year, it was Parisian macaroons, this year I searched out alfajores (the yummy dulce de leche cookies from Argentina). The owner, Andrea, couldn't have been nicer, the cookies were reasonable (nicely packaged assortment of flavors), made it up to Tacoma a day early, and my daughter was thrilled -- said they were soft, fresh and soooo yummy!
