This char siu bao is only $2. Where can you get this price? Texture is very soft. Flavors are just right. Between the bun, pork, and sauce. The pork has some sweetness, and there is a balance of meat and fattyness. The bun is golden brown and soft. They offer a variety of buns, steamed bao ( pork & cabbage, chicken & cabbage, and dai bao ( combo ). The pork and chicken bao is under $2, and the dai bao is about $2.25 ( I think). Since most of the items are sold out after breakfast or lunch, I ordered a pork and vegetable bun. The people here speak Mandarin. Service here was fast. Chinese buns baked fresh! There's a huge selection to choose from. My go to favorites are their pineapple buns, egg custard, and recently tried their hotdog scallion bun. A welcome addition to the busy 61st Street's cluster of businesses near the subway. Over the years Woodside has largely been Irish and Korean, but the sprinkles of Chinese businesses have been in random parts of the hood. Woodside Rainbow Bakery offers an array of bubble tea, pastries, dim sum, and dessert. If I lived nearby, I'd be getting a hot milk tea and often. The ladies behind the counter are super nice and they speak good English (as expected for this hood). Their bubble tea is solid, but it's of the syrup / powder based. Before the afternoon hits, give their Chinese pastries a shot. The prices aren't Chinatown worthy, but it's a cheap eat option for Woodside. I see that they have Dim Sum in the back area. While it doesn't *look* terrible, I can't vouch for it above an actual Dim Sum banquet. It may work in a pinch, but most of it looks like it's been made offsite. I'd say to stick with the drinks and give one of their cakes a shot. For now, the place is cash only. Parking is super limited, so don't even bother. I am able to pickup some dim sum and yummy buns so close in the neighborhood plus their prices are completely reasonable, similar to Chinatown, Elmhurst and flushing. I got here pretty late in the day and their were no more hot dim sum plus limited buns but there were customers still coming in to see what was left. I've been anxiously watching Woodside Rainbow Bakery finish renovations for the past few weeks and was pleasantly surprised to see it celebrate its grand opening the day before! Opened by the same group as Rainbow Bakery in Elmhurst, this location is clean, bright and efficient and stocks all the typical Chinese bakery items like buns and cakes. Their larger cakes also look beautifully decorated. This bakery is more like the old-school bakeries in Chinatown that have a small hot dim sum menu, like rice rolls, har gaw, and shumai, and drinks (including bubble tea!) along with their pastries. For those with family members who only speak Chinese, they speak both Mandarin and Cantonese here. At this trip, I only tried a few pastries (lemon roll, paper-cup sponge cake, and peanut mochi ball) but they were fresh and delicious. The staff was also extremely efficient and friendly. Prices are a little higher than in Flushing or Chinatown but quality is good and you can't beat the convenience, being only steps away from the 7 train station. Woodside Rainbow Bakery is a wonderful addition to Woodside and I really hope it will be able to carve its own niche in the Woodside breakfast (and anytime) scene. read more

I went on a weekday afternoon and they still had plenty of dim sum. I wanted a pork bun but it was sold out so I opted for the combo bun. While I was there they brought out another batch of steamed buns so they probably restock the selection until late afternoon. I tried the beef noodle roll, shumai and the combo bun. The dim sum dishes are about $2 and the pork combo bun is $1.50. They were mediocre and that day the meat in the center was still pinkish but not so pink that it's raw. At least it's cheap. I will have to try their other offerings some other day. They do have a decent selection of both dimsum dishes and baked goods at low prices. read more

This is one of my favorite bakeries. I always stop by for morning coffee and their croissants and almond twists are a must have. I recently discovered they have Thai iced tea as well - can't wait to indulge this summer.
