We came by the day before Mother's Day, so they had pre decorated Mother's Day cakes. You can also place an order. Service is quick and friendly. We initially planned on getting a Strawberry Shortcake, as that seemed to be the cake to get. However, we opted for the Cheesecake, because we were able to add fresh strawberries (and whipped cream) on top! I'm not a fan of whipped cream, so I avoided that, but everyone seemed to enjoy. It had a good creamy texture and was not too sweet. The strawberries were indeed fresh. The pound cake was soft and airy. The vanilla flavor comes through. This bakery is amazing--everything is made in-house, and it always smells incredible when you walk in. A friend recommended it to me, and I've already ordered two birthday cakes from here. The tiramisu cake was absolutely delicious, honestly one of the best I've ever had. I didn't even know you could customize a tiramisu cake since it's usually served the traditional way, but they made it exactly how I wanted. As someone who loves tiramisu, this really stood out. I also ordered a strawberry shortcake, and it was just as impressive. The buttercream was so good , light, flavorful, and not overly sweet. Everyone loved it, and there wasn't a single slice left. The owner's son (I believe) was super helpful, he really takes the time to understand what you want and brings it to life perfectly. A friend told me about Du Bois' black forest cake many years ago and it was good. I got reminded about this bakery recently so dropped by one day, got a pecan pastry and inquired about cakes. They have no website/price list but the gentleman there gave me his card and said he can give info upon inquiry (though seeing a list of cake flavors, fillings, prices would be easier for me when ordering). He did say 7" cakes are $21. By the following week, I needed a cake and ordered by phone a Strawberry shortcake - 8" $38, good for up to 14 people...great price. The next size at 10" is $70+. The icing was not too sweet, and the cake/decor reminded me of 90s cakes, which we didn't mind. We liked that the cake was soaked in the strawberry flavor plus the fresh strawberries in the filling (we compared to a couple of other bakery's SS cake - where the strawberry can be tasted in the filling but not really in the cake by itself. This bakery has been around to more than 40 years and I remember growing up always having this for our family birthday parties. It has actually been a while since I've had it and my friend made a special request specifically for strawberry shortcake for her 50th birthday. Du Bois for the first place that came to mind. Took a quick look online from pics from previous customers and was surprised to see the number of different designs they can do now. I picked this pink flower one that the owner made out of fondant and it was so pretty and exceeded my expectations. There was no additional charge at all. Back in the days....40 years ago, there was one style I remember getting and it was white cream with strawberries. Now there's so many you can pick from. The birthday girl was so happy with the design. I ordered a 20 person cake. There were 2 choices-round or sheet cake. Round is $60 which is what I opted for since I thought it looked prettier and the sheet cake is $50. The round cake actually came out very tall but gorgeous. Harder to cut too since it was taller. The owner was so nice. He custom made the top of the cake box to make sure the cake fit and doesn't get damaged. The fresh cream on the cake is so good. Not too sweet and very light. Perfect with the strawberries. The cake part was moist and yummy. I forgot how much I love this cake. All the nostalgic memories of eating it when I was younger came back. I stopped by this bakery in Du Bois after hearing it's one of the oldest in Queens. It's a no-frills, old-school spot with real neighborhood roots. The guy behind the counter wasn't exactly friendly, but not rude, just very to the point, like someone who's been doing this forever. It's cash only and has a wide variety of baked goods. He gives advice as to what will work with your vision of your custom cake. You can even bring your personal cake decorations and he will incorporate into your cake. I ordered a cake from here for my brother's birthday and I was extremely disappointed. I had tried their red velvet cake that a coworker had bought for the office and really enjoyed it but unfortunately did not have the same experience this time. When I first placed the order, the gentleman was very helpful and told me the cake would be ready the next day. When I called a couple of hours later to confirm the order and give them the writing I wanted on the cake, the person who picked up the phone was not friendly at all. He was actually quite rude. He said he did not see the order and he would call me later. Never received a call. Thankfully, the cake was ready at 5pm the next day. When I saw the cake, I did not like the decor at all; I didn't like the flowers and it looked like a sloppy job. The cake was $45 for 20-25 people which was pricey. Now, when it comes to the actual taste of the cake, it was nothing like I was expecting. I ordered a chocolate fudge cake; the cake was dry and flavorless and not fudgy at all. When I think of chocolate fudge cake, I expect a very moist cake with a lot of chocolate fudge. That was not at all what I got. This place has been operating since 1957 so it has old-school decor. This place is cash only. I tried the baklava and the chocolate stick. The baklava was good, the chocolate stick was a flaky, dry, crusty thing, so I wouldn't get that again. I spent part of my childhood in Elmhurst, Queens, so whenever I see a business that is still there from my younger days I am delighted. I am even happier when I discover said business has something amazing to offer, and Du Bois fits that description to a tee. I would not blame you if you wandered past Du Bois and completely missed it. Sandwiched between other businesses, the bakery is a tiny place with most of the space dedicated to the baked goods. Customers go in, order and leave. There are no tables or chairs (even if there were there'd be nowhere to put them). The counter is Old Skool, featuring a number counter for customers (no longer used) and even the contraption to store string if you order enough to fill a box. Glass displays show off baked goods from cakes to breads to cookies (and more!). You really feel like you're stepping back in time in Du Bois. My absolute favorite item here is the strawberry shortcake. It is, quite simply, one of the best I have ever had. The cake is always moist and delicious. The frosting is creamy and rich. The strawberries are fresh and filled with flavor. I have been buying this cake for years and it never disappoints! I highly recommend a visit to Du Bois. I've only come here for the baklava and I really like that it's not too sweet. Sadly i feel like the recent times I've had it, it wasn't as great as my first few times. I feel like the bottoms are more soaked with syrup and the most recent time I had it, it would split in half really easily. But it still tastes pretty good. The man who works the counter always seems like he doesn't seem too happy to be working there, but it might be just how he is because the service feels very neutral. He isn't excited to to serve you but also doesn't seem to hate customers. I always get tempted to try other items but I can't resist the baklava when i see it so I always end up getting that. I also don't know what they have because sometimes they seem to have some things, but sometimes I don't see those items at all. I can't tell if they were sold out or they didn't make them that day. But overall, I would still come here for the baklava. They sell them by the pound but I think you would also be able to buy just a piece if asked. Thought I'd give this place a try since I wanted to support more small businesses at this time. I called Sunday evening to ask about prices and how to order in advance, etc. The lady I spoke with was nice, told me that the standard 7" strawberry shortcake was $17, and it was $1 for writing and $1 for candles. Two days later, the afternoon before I needed the cake, I called to place the order for pick up the next day. The man I spoke with was abrupt. When I asked to include candles with my order he told me to get some at CVS. I picked up the cake the next day and it looked beautiful. There were piped roses along with the writing. The placement of some of the strawberries were questionable but overall it looked nice enough. In terms of taste, it was a little let down. I had high expectations from reading reviews about people saying it was the best strawberry shortcake they ever had but we thought it was simply mediocre. The cake was bland, the buttercream was delicious, but it was still too heavy. The strawberries didn't taste stale but they weren't fresh either. It tasted better on the second day we ate it. Gave 4 stars to give them the benefit of the doubt. PS. We got our candles from Fay Da (our usual go-to bakery; they include candles, a happy birthday topper, plates, and utensils with every cake order).
