First off was their SINJEON CHEESE KIMBOP which is filled with kimchi and cheese on the inside. I did expect it to be cheesier, maybe even with a pull, but this wasn't the case. Either way, it was flavorful with a good amount of spice and I'd safely say it was better than other kimbaps I've tried before! Sinjeon Cheese Kimbop $11.99 Next up, if you're looking for a dish with even more heat, is their CREAMY CARBONARA TTEOKBOKKI. This is the best sauce ever! It was so flavorful with a hint of smokey bacon, creamy but not overly heavy, and had such a good kick to it. The rice cakes were chewy, the little sausages were fun to each, and I love the crunchy little toppings which further elevated the entire dish. We were just about dipping everything in here. Creamy Carbonara Tteokbokki $12.99 We also ordered their SEAWEED ROLLS which were so hot upon being served and crunchy like you'd want them - I just felt they were pricey at $3.99 for three mini rolls. This is a very casual dining spot. You walk in to seat yourself, but we were immediately brought over bowls, chopsticks, and napkins by an employee. If you want water though, that is self-serve near their cashier area. After reviewing their menu for a couple minutes via a QR code presented on the table, one of their employees comes to place your order. Due to the casual nature, the employees serve the food to your table but do not do any routine check ups on you. Payment is also done with you walking up to the counter and oh, 5% discount if you pay cash! This is one of those restaurants with very tricky parking, given it is in the Yonge and Steeles area. There were a couple spots behind the restaurant near the waste bins with a sign that says "Sinjeon customers only" but I was skeptical because of its placement. In the end, it worked out fine for me. Thank goodness for no tows or this would have been a much different lunch experience!

Water is self serve, and you can get extra utensils on your own as well. Service was good, even though there was very little table service. The prices are pretty cheap, my carbonara cream toppoki was around $14 and my boyfriend's original was $10. I asked for no spice at all and they were able to do it for the cream carbonara! The other location at College added a little bit and I ended up finding it spicy, so I was happy that they didn't add any this time. It was pretty good, the sauce is tasty and the rice cakes are good. However, I only got two sausages and two mushroom slices in the entire thing, which I thought was kind of sad. My boyfriend said his was good, and it doesn't come with any other toppings other than sauce and rice cake. Overall they were both tasty, but I wish there were more sausage and mushrooms in mine.

Also, the server accidentally spilled my partner's soup on the table, and after some confusion with the waitress, another waitress brought in a new bowl of soup. The ambiance is simple and great for a casual dinner with friends. Overall, I would definitely come here again. There is such a wide variety of unique dishes to try that makes me want to come back!

Fast forward to 2026. We're in the Toronto area and I notice there are a handful of Myung Dong style restaurants on my search. We ended up picking this one because it was the closest one from our hotel. Without knowing the quality of the other options, we were so glad we made this choice. Similar menu and the kimchi is one of the stars of the show. Slightly unripe, but loaded with garlic, we couldn't get enough of it. The kalguksu had a mild, but peppery broth; and all members of my family thought it was the best they'd ever had. We also ordered the bossam (pork belly) and steamed mandoo. Eating here was the highlight of our trip. We even considered going back the next day!

Hence we entered Jin Dai Lae. Good decision (yes, I am patting my back). Entree pricing was $3 to $4 lower than Markham/Richmond Hill. Portion was so big that you would be full, and might have to doggy bag. Most importantly, food tasted good. Short ribs stew had many pieces of beef. Squids hot plate was saucy. It wasn't too spicy, so it was good for me (menu didn't have a chilli sign either). For people who like it hot, you can ask for some chilli sauce.

Now the food -- we ordered the Original flavor (Medium spice) and it was SO GOOD. I've had my fair share of tteokbokki, but this one was different. There wasn't any other filling besides rice cakes which was unique but the sauce was soupy and addictive. I just wanted to drink it all up. It was simple and delicious. The rice cakes were so chewy and bouncy. Apparently they import their ingredients straight from Korea. If you're in the area, check them out!
