They didnt serve bread or salad. The waitress never checked in not even to refill our drinks. I ordered a meal to go for my son. I ordered it a half hour after we ordered our meals (which we still waited 1/2 hour for) then after our food came and we ate, i had to wait another 1/2 for his to go order to come. I've been on a smoked fish kick for a a few months now, like out of nowhere, I want smoked fish, so currently Woolley's is it, it's close to home, it's not to over prices, since I don't eat a lot of it, because I learned if I buy too much (to make it more bang for the buck) like more than a snack size order, for maybe 2 days of snackin' it goes bad, even in the fridge. When we (4 people)entered, the first thing that hit us is that it smelled like a garbage dump. Should left then however we didn't. The ambiance was zero. The menu was next to zero. Ordered scallops they tasted like iodine. We all sent it back. Next came out some broiled Salmon. It was 1/8 inc thick. If I didn't know I ordered salmon I would not have known what it was. Ordered flounder platter with fries and coleslaw. The flounder was not fresh and overcooked. The fries were undercooked. The coleslaw was just cabbage no mayonnaise and all were COLD and AWFUL! It used to be, and I'm willingly dating myself, when fish was the poor man's beef. Mom would buy fish and it would be cheap meal for the whole family. Man, have times changed. I rarely buy fish anymore, partly the cost and partly they make it way better in restaurants than I can. Woolley's is the place to go in these parts. They've been here forever and wanting seafood for Easter, there was no better place to go. When you walk in you are faced with a counter laden with a plethora of seafood. They have anything that swims. Lobster, crabs, shrimp, scallops, fish, mussels, etc. I went in with the thought of picking up some shrimp and some fish. I decided on the XX Jumbo shrimp and bronzino. I asked the counterman for two pounds of bronzino filets and I see him weighing out three whole fish. I said, "I wanted filets." He responded by saying, "Yes, we'll filet them for you." OK, that works. In about two minutes they were packed up for me, I paid for the lot, and walked out. Simple. I marinated the shrimp and cooked them on the grill. They were great. I found a recipe for for pan seared bronzino with mushrooms in a wine sauce that was excellent. The fish was super fresh. This is the place to go in the Freehold/Howell/Lakewood areas. read more

Being that my sister and my niece and I are visiting from California and don't know the area she took her time to tell us of stores and places we could go to get what we need. She was so sweet and definitely made our dinner experience more than enjoyable. She was very attentive with a great attitude and again she delivered us impeccable service! Now let's talk about the food. All I can say is just wow wow wow!!! It was so delicious and fresh. The complimentary rolls were soft and fluffy. The lobster bisque was hot fresh and delicious. We also got fried calamari, let me tell you that was the best calamari I have ever tasted in my life!!! I ordered the Woolleys salmon it comes with spinach, goat cheese artichokes and lemon butter, it was so good I loved it. There were 2 women at the cash register along with a small child who was eating a takeout pan of spaghetti. They were taking selfies of themselves and the child while totally ignoring me standing right in front of them. I've known about this place for some years now because my now husband would tell me stories of how his family would go there and sit at the benches outside to eat when they first moved to the area (Jackson). This was back in the early 90s. At the time, the benches were gone and they only sold uncooked seafood... so I was very happy to find out that they now sell cooked food again and you're also able to sit outside ! It looked nice enough inside--not a large dining area, but gave me a feel (as most seafood restaurants do) ... wooden planked floors, fish tank, nautical decor... I took a menu and while it did seem a bit pricey, definitely looking forward to checking it out to see if it's worth it. Next door, we got the FRESH whiting.. they were just laying whole on top of ice. There were two gems from the visit. The first was when we first walked in, there were pieces of salmon to try that looked really interesting.. I was skeptical at first, because I'm a germophobe and wasn't certain how long it'd been out or who came into contact with it... BUT because I'm also a greedy buzzard, my temptation took over.. boy oh boy am I glad that I was of flesh that day, because this was the best find !!! It couldn't have been better.. Unbelievably buttery, had the whole sweet and savory appeal (which I love).. At $13.99, I still look a half pound home. YUM! As I was waiting for my whiting to be filleted, I started to browse and came across a "smoked seafood dip"... right up my alley. That completed my order.. the staff were very friendly and helpful, but a bit of a language barrier made it a little challenging to communicate. Maybe it's me, but, I visited the market part and what I saw was a health risk. Big flies, seafood out in the open, no ice on it, although there was a sign on the door that said, SORRY, NO ICE. To me, no ice, no sell, at least for me, no but. When I went in, I thought the sign meant they didn't have any ice for customers to take with the them to put their purchases on, until they got home, but, there was very little to no ice on the exposed raw seafood. The seafood is fresh and of great quality. I personally love their large, sweet sea scallops, but their other selections are just as good. Their New England clam chowder is loaded with clams and, surprisingly, not all that salty. There is a restaurant now offering a few outside tables due to Covid that I have yet to try, but since they're using the same seafood you can buy in their market I look forward to giving that a try in the near future. I would buy seafood from here. I've driven past this place 1000 times and have never had the opportunity to go inside! Well today I went inside. I was greeted by the workers who were filleting fish in the back and also by who I presumed to be the owner of the place. The smell of the store wasn't overly fishy as stated in previous reviews; however, it did have a fishy smell. I assume that all fish-markets are supposed to have a fishy smell because they are selling (Drum Roll please) Seafood! Overall, I found the establishment to be very clean, seafood and packaged foods displayed neatly (as a matter of fact some of the seafood were still alive). I had spent $50...special dinner for friends and family. Wooley's sells fresh fish. And by fresh, I mean some of it still alive and all of it is far better than anything you'll find in a supermarket! The selection is amazing, ranging from tiny sardines to giant tile fish. Need a couple of heads for Pinoy stew? No problem. Crabs? Still kicking and tasty. Bought fresh tilapia, n whiting. They fillet the fish for you...had to cut a Lil bit of the pieces they could have cut off my whiting. But overall, fish was fresh, no fishy odor. I was here last Saturday and holy smokes did they blow me away with the stuffed lobster (stuffed with bacon and scallops!!!!) The lobster was enormous and the meat was juicy and delicious!!! Went in today and bought some flounder. Baked it as I always do. It came out extremely mushy (indicating it was previously frozen) and had a very fishy taste (flounder should never be fishy). Wooley's is great seafood market with plenty of variety and prices are reasonable. I have been going there for as long as I can remember and during the summer the place is packed. As some people have stated recently, they have been renovating and sometimes the place does smell overly fishy. Buyer beware when buying seafood but that goes for any place. Ask to smell it, hold it, and I don't want to get to graphic :) if you question the freshness. They are real nice in their and I always get fresh seafood. read more

I have been coming to Wooly's since it first opened in the 60's. I remember the original owners and the store has not changed much since then. I no longer live in Freehold but still travel from Bergen county to shop fresh fish there at least once a week. The new owners are as(20+ some odd years) nice as the original owners. The fish is fresh and the clams are superb too. Prices are as the best they can be when all food is sky high. The people are very friendly and helpful in assisting with any requests. Gonna be going down there tomorrow for fresh picked Blue Claw Crabs. read more
