We don't get to Mr Shrimp that often but when we do it's always a fine meal. This visit was more enjoyable then most as we caught them on a night they were not packed with people. They were barely half full and the noise was not extremely loud. I had the New England clam chowder and as usual it was a great start to the meal. Plenty of clams and potatos in a creamy white sauce. To start the meal they also provided bread sticks with sesame seeds which is a real nice alternative to dinner rolls. With the sticks they also providing a dipping sauce that really tasted great. This the only place I can remember having breadsticks during dinner and loved it. For dinner I had stuffed flounder with rice and vegetables. The fish was prepared real well and came with plenty of crabmeat and stuffing. Inside it was real moist and tasted great. Along with that was rice and mixed vegetables. In the restaraunt the vegetables were a bit harder then I would prefer but when I reheated the meal at home they were perfect. But if you you are an al dente vegetable they would be fine for you. My wife picked something off the specials of the day. Shrimp, Mahi, broccoli, mushrooms, pine nuts all over rice. She felt this was a great meal and would definitely get it again. It was a nice blend of a bunch of tastes and textures, and the pine nuts are always a great addition to a meal. With less people to deal with the service was right on point, with several returns to our table to make sure everything was well. I feel you will always have a great meal here. The waitstaff were very attentive and brought them coloring pages with crayons, which we really appreciated, and served their food first with the appetizers. I don't like seafood but my family really enjoyed all of the seafood dishes (they got the New England clam chowder, clam linguini, calamari, fish and chips, and Maryland crab cakes). Clam pot is worth it! The broth is a light garlicky taste and that pairs with all the seafood. You get all the seafood! It is massive and a great mix. I had so much left for another meal. Very friendly staff and service in a nice clean spot on Hwy 71 while on vacation. Unfortunatly the food wasn't up to our standards. Salmon was grilled and overcooked - making it very dry. Stuffed flounder with crab stuffing was mush- the stuffing was over blended (vs hand mixing the stuffing - couldn't tell it was crab - it was mushy and unappealing to eat. Steak tip appetizer - served well done- should have been medium rare - (we weren't asked how we prefer it cooked so maybe we should have said something) and the soft shell crabs were just yuck. Too much of the crabs (waste) overwhelmed the dish making it inedible. Not a tasty sauce. The food was meh! Fried onion strips side dish was ok. We prob should have ordered fried food - also had some steamers which were pretty good. We liked the BYOB - we just didn't order well. The fried fish sandwiches looked good on a neighbors plate we saw. Steer clear of steak and the sautéed soft shell crabs. This place has the atmosphere of a senior citizens cafeteria. It's loud and echoey . However, the food is awesome all the time. The specials are always varied and awesome when they get to the table. Portions are decent. The place is clean but sterile. Like add some colored led lighting and background music and definitely acoustic tiles to absorb the loud banter of half deaf senior citizens who fill this place. And if ever a seafood place was dying for a big fish tank in the middle of the place, this is it. Food is great though so it's a win. Bring your own alcohol or you can call the store up the street and they deliver to your table in 10 minutes. No bread but they give you some little hard bread sticks. read more

I love that the shore has places like this. We started off with the buffalo shrimp, the seafood risotto special, and the fried calamari. When a place also serves the tentacles is a good sign. The blackened tuna bites were slightly dry and lacking salt/seasoning. They definitely had a kick to them back that was it. The soft shell crab was also lacking seasoning on the breading. The crab itself was a fairly good size and tasted pretty fresh but there wasn't enough flavor. It also could have used some more color/been crispier. Crab cake sandwich was ok. The brioche bun was delicious. The fish and chips were pretty standard. Fries were crispy and perfectly salted. At the end of the day, with all of the seafood options in the area, I unfortunately don't think we'll be back to Mr. Shrimp. read more

We had a good enough experience down here last week to be surprised by the low rating that it has on Yelp. While we are ultimately landing on three stars, we think that it could easily be a four with a bit more care and attention. We met a friend for dinner and we'd definitely recommend making a reservation because the place was in full swing on Thursday night. (It's BYOB, so we came prepared.) The vibe is chill and low-key, but the acoustics are pretty awful, so get ready to shout for coversation. We started with the calamari and the Caesar salad, both of which were good. The calamari was crispy on the outside and was surprisingly tender--no rubber-chewing. The salad was par for the course but no complaints and the portions were agreeable. For mains, our kiddo got the shrimp and fries, and like the calamari, everything was crispy and it was a decent portion. Did these shrimp taste particularly fresh? No, of course not, but given the circumstances, it was fine. One of us got the Shrimp dinner (grilled) and loved it--*those* shrimp did taste wonderful. We loved the sides of steamed vegetable which are very 90s, but bring it back! Sweet potato fries were a nice variation. The lobster special dinner, however, left a lot to be desired. We ordered it with the stuffed crab, and that came out barely room temperature though the flavors were fine. The lobster was god awful. SO TOUGH. Blegh. Just NO. Dessert was all around terrible. The cheesecake "on special" was defrosted from whatever Sysco vendor they got it from. The key lime pie was made with the fake stuff and lacked any acidic brightness, and while the chocolate mousse was the best one, the shell was hard as a rock because it came straight out of their premade freezer walk in. All around, a huge disappointment and they should know better. While we wish we were ending on a sweet note, we do want to point out that service was solid and everything came out in a reasonable amount of time. This review would have been four stars if just the lobster or just the dessert was the issue, but taking into account both scenarios, we're rounding down from 3.5 instead of going up. We were treated to dinner by the generous Pop-Pop, but prices seem consistent with a seafood joint at the shore in the peak of summer. It was busy - we understand. No silverware on the table, only napkins. Now the food - I ordered stuffed flounder. The fish was very tough - overcooked, dry. my husband ordered the broiled seafood flounder, which was only warm when it was put in front of him. The flounder was rubbery and dried out and the scallops were bad. They smelled like ammonia. I had to ask someone to send our server to the table because she was nowhere in sight. She took the scallops back and another person came to the table and said "they are only going to replace them with scallops from the same bin, do you want something else?" What! So you are going to continue to serve bad scallops to people? My husband replaced the scallops with shrimp. We were never offered a refill on our drinks. Our server just kind of stayed out of sight the entire time. She never came to check if the food was okay. I had to get someone else to get her. Expensive meal and we were so disappointed. Not going to lie I was worried that this wouldn't be good. I just had that feeling but was pleasantly surprised. The grilled tuna wrap with onion straws was a solid dish. The coconut shrimp had a nice crunch to it and the shrimp were cooked just right. The fish and chips also hit the spot. We also tried the penne vodka with shrimp but I would skip that. For dessert the peanut butter chocolate brownie was hard to resist. Try the carrot cake too or the berry pie with ice cream. Not sure they make the desserts fresh but it was good. Every year, my family and I make our annual pilgrimage to Mr. Shrimp after a day at the shore. I have tried other seafood restaurants at various locations at the Jersey Shore over the years. Everything was seasoned well and cooked to perfection. The clams were plump, soft and flavorful, the calamari tender-crisp, and the conch fritters were even 1000% better than the ones I ate last month in the Cayman Islands, with nice chunks of conch inside. The "small" simple garden salad my mother ordered was colorful and GIGANTIC. The service was impeccable throughout our meal. We didn't order dessert, entrees, or cocktails, but everything passing us by looked fantastic. This was our first time to Mr. Shrimp since they relocated to a larger building. The interior is bright, modern, spacious, and classy, with ample space between the tables. The vibe is casual/smart casual. The kind of place your Aunt Ethel would dine at with her book club.
