    Me with my bike!
    Austin S.

Everyone I asked recommended Working Bikes, and they didn't disappoint. I bought a refurbished bike for $280 that would have been sold new for $600, and they also have all the used bike attachments you could need. Their staff is so helpful, and even their clientele is, too! Plus, they fix up old bikes and donate them, so supporting them is definitely the right move. They also allow test rides before purchasing.

Bikes, bikes, and bikes galore in a cool urban loft setting! The mission of Working Bikes is basically buy a bike give a bike. Your donation and purchase of a bike helps support their cause to give bikes away to those in need from all around the world. The average bicycle costs somewhere around $200+. You'll leave with a refreshed, fixed up, used bike that has a lot of love from those who volunteer their time to get your bike in working condition. Each bike has a 30-day warranty. If you're not satisfied for any reason, you can exchange it or get a credit for a bike. No cash returns. Word on the street is that people line up first thing in the morning to get the best inventory pick, but we were there in the middle of the day and...well...as you can see from my photos, there are a ton of bikes to choose from! Every corner of the building has something to do with bikes. From high-end bikes to vintage cruiser bikes, to a few kids bikes, they also have bike parts galore and a section of used bike clothing. They have a large onsite repair center, and they also offer community classes where you can learn to care for your bike and keep up with the repairs on your own. It's super crowded and fast-paced in there, so don't expect a typical retail store experience. But, everyone is super duper friendly and cares deeply about the mission. Top Tip: There's a crap load of construction on Western so the traffic, even in the middle of the day, is insane. On Wednesdays during street cleaning, parking is scarce!

I went there today to purchase a bike. I'm extremely happy with it. It rides great. It feels safe, sturdy, and quick. The staff was helpful and laidback. They helped direct me to the bike I needed.

Funny thing happens with kids, they grow up. When they do, if you are busy enjoying your time with them, you don't realize how suddenly you have 4 bikes from your two kids that they have long since outgrown, taking up needed space in your garage. Dealing with this is how I stumbled upon Working Bikes. Play it Again Sports didn't want the two nicer ones this spring, and the two older ones were still serviceable, but not bikes Play it Again would have even considered. What to do? Throwing them away seemed wasteful, silly, and almost unacceptably privileged. These bikes could still be used. With a call to Working Bikes I learned they would enthusiastically welcome the donation of all four bikes, and they were actively looking for some better kids bikes for local Christmas gifts for this year. I had one, probably two, kids bikes that would make excellent gifts. Getting to their location on 23rd in Western is a bit of a trip, but they now own their building, and can do their good work there, and they will be able to stay there for years to come as they work to fulfill their mission. So slightly out of the way, yes, but if you are smart like I wasn't, you could plan your trip around a stop to Lagunitas Brewery, and all would be VERY, VERY, good. Supporting a charity and having good local beer, a near perfect day. What I didn't realize when I drove down there, is that they support their mission, not just by fixing and shipping bikes to locations where bikes are needed across the globe, but they repair, sell, and service bikes and bike parts, to raise money for their mission as well. Everyone, or almost everyone there is a volunteer, and man are they ever enthusiastic about bikes. Infectiously so. AND what interesting bikes they had. From cheap kids bikes to affordable Treks and Schwinns, to expensive racing and hand crafted bikes, and all sorts of things in between. Had I known about this place early in the summer of 2018, I would have made my two bike purchases from them instead of from the reseller and Facebook sites I did. Prices were comparable, and hell, their mission is darn compelling, which is no doubt why WBEZ's Jerome McDonnell, and this fall's Chicago Architecture Center, Chicago Open House, have both featured them. My wife's old bike is probably the next to be donated to Working Bikes, and when we do that, I think we will just go ahead and buy her next bike there. Just seems like the right and good thing to do for all involved. Oh, and did I mention that after I made my donation, they gave me a great pint beer glass with their logo on it? Yeah, like they are just daring me to drive past Lagunitas on my way home without stopping there first. GO HERE and donate your old bikes. Or go here and buy a used bike at a fair and reasonable price. BUT GO HERE. It is places like this that make Chicago GREAT!

I moved from SF to Chicago days before the shelter in place order. I wanted a bike to be able to explore the city. I had never bought a bike online before (the only option with the storefront closed) so I found a few that seemed like good options and emailed Working Bikes. Phil quickly got back to me and we had two long conversations about all of the things I'm looking for in a bike. He had searched the website and had a couple recommendations for me too. He even tested the weights and did some extra measurements for me. I went and picked up the bike and am SO PLEASED with it. Seriously a great experience.

    So pretty!!

Do you guys carry any entry level aluminum road bikes with 58 cm frames that don't crack easily for no more than $500?

And at the end of last season I decided it was time to upgrade the fx3 (which I also got from VCC during covid). Now for the last 8 months I've been browsing trek.com, specialized.com, reddit, facebook marketplace, etc., trying to get a sense of what I want. I'll say considering most bike manufacturers have a large range of bikes for each model, the marketing folks then don't do a particularly great job explaining the differences. Enter VCC. I stopped by because I wanted to know if I was 56 or 58cm, with a plan to go buy used in the approximate $2000 range. My man Tim spent maybe 2-3 hours with me walking me through the entire range of trek road bikes, teaching me the differences among the gearsets, alloys used in the frames, the brakes, etc. It really made me confident in terms of zeroing in on the bike that would fit my needs. And it just so happened they had a prior year model at a price that was close-ish to my original budget (lol). Walked home with a new Domane SL5, and now something like 6 weeks and 500+ miles later I'm a pretty happy camper.

I asked if they could use my current tube, which was not damaged, in the new tire. They said they had to use their own tube in the new tire which is very fair. The new tube even comes included in the labor cost of changing the tire. However, I wish they asked me if I wanted my old tube back before discarding it, as many bike shops do. I can excuse this if the tube was punctured, but it wasn't. I could have used that as a spare tube or something. Tubes are around $10 so not a huge deal but that would've been nice. I also wished they asked me if I preferred a certain tire pressure before inflating my tire to an arbitrary PSI. Sure, some people don't have a preferred pressure, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Especially if someone is purchasing a $100+ tire. Again, not a huge deal as I can just change it at home but would've been nice. Overall, still a good experience.

The workers were what you'd expect as far as being nice - but the mechanics are amateur at best. After my first disappointment with their routine "maintenance service", I wanted to give them another shot with my brakes. After all, I yearn to have a good relationship with a local bike shop. And sadly, it's a bigger disappointment than my first visit. I asked for them to bleed both brakes. I received a call saying they're "fine" and suggested NOT bleeding brakes; but the pads and rotors were caked in oil and other residue (I cleaned them both 3 days ago). But I figured you gotta trust the pros, right? Wrong. I figured they'd replace the pads, clean the rotors and call it a day. After all, I hadn't sanded the pads this past time and they are getting old (10 months). Nope, just VERY poorly sanded the existing brake pads, cleaned the rotor below my normal standard and was charged nearly $50. For that. To sand 4 little brake pads and (presumably) apply some rubbing alcohol to the rotors. $50. Look at the picture of the brake pads after they serviced them. Lmao. I could have done that for $2 at home since all I need is a little more rough sand paper. Ha. And no, it didn't help my brakes at all. They produced very little friction, we're extremely loud and there was even a clicking noise from my drivetrain on my ride home I haven't even diagnosed yet. I just had to write this review. Ha. Should have just told them to screw off and bleed the damn brakes. To me, it's simple. This is a classic big city bike shop that is money hungry. $50 for that is LAUGHABLE. I could take this to my hometown bike shop and for that money they'd do a bleed, drivetrain clean, fork pressurization, frame clean, etc. And after all that, I still need my brakes bled. They didn't do it. Ha. EDIT: Attached is the video of my new wheel sound! I think it's just the dork disk, but still.
