I typically don't mention people by name, but my experience at Working Class leaves me no choice. Let's talk for a second about Jermaine. Jermaine's the type of host/server/bartender--I'm not even sure exactly what his role is, he kind of does it all--that every restaurant wishes they had 10 more of. It could be slammed and jammed, but I'll be damned, there's your man, Jerman making you feel like he's a one-table kind of guy, even though you know he's seeing other tables behind your back. Ever ready with a heavy bevy, Jermul makes sure your cup stayeth full and the party's never dull. You ought to give that Jumanji guy a raise...What? I had been looking forward to trying this place. It was very difficult to find parking, but that was to be expected being this is in North Park. We walked up and the business was busy but not at full capacity. We were blocked off by this white chain and not allowed to enter the premises to request seats, a sign stated to wait to be seated by a host. Nobody else was trying to get in, just my group. We stood there for several minutes without anyone coming to allow us entry or addressing us. The host made eye contact with us but continued on with a casual conversation about bands. While I was standing I overheard comments from her directed at another member of our party and I immediately went over. She was complaining about how many tables we were taking up and I immediately paid for all tables so she could start over and just charge to one. My eyes darted to a picture of salisbury steak!! LOLOLOL No joke! Man!! I have never enjoyed homemade salisbury steak (and never made it myself...). Just seeing this offered on any menu bring back childhood memories of me enjoying the Banquet frozen dinners!! Ah, the perks of your pops being in the Navy & momma working 2 jobs her entire career- I get to buy the easily affordable treats from the commissary on base- if it can shave off time of my parents work schedule to not cook for me! Ha! Anyhow- and Working Class is in North Park- another reason to venture out of my stomping grounds. The pictures do no justice of the exterior & interior seating. I loved the many options available here. You got the front street view counters & communal tables outside. Indoor, you got tables at the counter & 4 tops w/ bar stools. Outback- you got the picnic benches w/ table umbrellas. We decided to dine indoors (actually hubby chose our table). Tons of TVs planted on the walls- nothing but every sport you can think of. At least the volume was muted (don't really care for sports) & some good ol Rock N Roll was blaring. I swear I've heard the majority of Creedence Clearwater Revival's Top Hits- which I really enjoyed tbh. Anyhow- to start of w/ the salisbury steak dinner- The steak itself was thick, decent sized- perfect in taste. Think it was just salt & pepper mingled in? Perhaps some onion powder? I dunno... my point is- the ground beef wasn't overly seasoned. I was bummed to see the baby red potatoes were sliced in half & browned. The menu read, smashed. So, I was under the impression they'd be smashed & made into a mashed potatoes of sorts... boo!!!!!! The green beans were perfect in crunch. Not soggy like boiled... you could actually pick up a stalk & bite into it like a fry. Mmmm! I love me some green beans that I can crunch into! That mushroom gravy!! Ooh so thick! I tried to smear tips of my green beans into it & even had to smash or cut into smaller pieces- the already halved baby reds into that tasty thick gravy. Basket of fries comes w/ ranch dressing & WCs house sauce (their version of 1,000 Island dressing- which btw I hate)- but, their hose version is way better- so, I used it all up! My pint of San Diego's Novo Latina Lager was a bit hard on my taste buds- I did finish this I ordered the Pfriem Pilsner afterwards, which I enjoyed more. I'm a sucker for beer & fries. I and to consider this a cheat meal. Oh well! Hubby ordered the Cast Iron chocolate chip w/ vanilla ice cream- I snagged 2 bites off of this. Ooohwee! Stopped by working class to catch up with a friend. It was around 6:30pm on a Friday. A busy time! Plus, it was happy hour. I imagine it can be really tricky during this time to find a spot anywhere (tables or bar) but luckily my friend and I were able to snag two seats at the bar! During happy hour they have amazing deals on food and beer. $5 for certain apps! We chose to get the buffalo chicken wings (6 wigs in each order) and to get the Mac and cheese to split. We also both got a Thorn brewery beer--Hazy Hop. Omg! The beer was amazing! I hadn't had that one before. And during happy hour a 16 ounce beer was ONLY $4!!! The bar tender was kind enough to give us a sample of a couple of beers on tap and that's how we chose this one. The chicken wings were delicious and came with carrots and celery as well as some ranch. The Mac and cheese was good, overall. I had to add some ketchup for a bit more flavor. Out with Ritual, in comes Working Class. It's bittersweet to see the transition. However, it looks like it was a nice upgrade. This place is definitely brighter, more open-spaced, welcoming, and better utilized the outdoor seating, especially in the front. My lady and I came here upon searching for local spots that were open for a late Sunday dinner (in which they were closed by midnight, 2am on Fri and Sat nights). I had a Reuben sandwich with fries and a half beer. I liked how they gave you an option to add fries and a half beer to your sandwich. After my glass was emptied, I ended up ordering a whole other beer afterwards. The plan worked, you guys. Parking: Street. I ended up parking about a block away, by the AutoZone plaza. FYI: - They have TVs showing sports (or non-sports-related programming) - I don't remember if they seat you or not. When we came, we just walked in and sat at an empty section of the bar area by the kitchen entrance. - If you happen to encounter other reviews that mention the dandy little cliché that the restaurant did not live up to expectations, feel free to ignore it. The food & service are both very hit or miss. I've eaten here enough times to know to go elsewhere IF I want decent food. They definitely cater more towards the "drinking-class" when it comes to people who don't order or drink alcohol. They need to realize what state they're business food is "serving." Not JUST "blue-collar" workers! But health-conscience "Californians" of ALL fields of work...a bit MORE "diversity" would be my suggestion to them!! Solid spot in North Park for craft beer and food. Working Class is a new part of the North Park nightlife. It's taken over the corner that was home to Ritual Kitchen for the last decade. The selection of draft beer here is great, but with this location being sandwiched between places like Rip Current and Toronado, it'll be interesting to see what they do with their beer list to stand out. Food options here are standard American food: Burgers. Fries. Wings. Eggy Breakfast options. PROPS: Solid beer and food menu. Kitchen open later than most of the neighborhood. We come here quite often and the food is always fresh and delicious. The games/fights are usually on and the atmosphere is always chill and relaxed. Initially had a slight rude waitress but said she had to leave and Alex was gonna serve us, which he was much better. I enjoyed a fantastic old school breakfast from this new eatery in North Park. It was a plate of biscuits and gravy with scrambled eggs, hash browns, and I added some locally made breakfast sausage for an extra $3. The biscuits and gravy cost $8 and some change. I loved everything thing about the meal. The star were no doubt the biscuits and gravy, but that is not to say the rest were not delish. The biscuit was semi dense soft moist pillows covered in a silky creamy white gravy studded with small pieces of sausage here and there. The gravy was light in flavor but those bits of sausage were a nice surprise. The scrambled eggs arrived remarkably scrambled to a fluffy consistency. They were lightly seasoned and very tasty. I asked for the hash brown to be extra crispy on the outside which they hit on the mark. They were crispy but soft and tender on the inside. These were great eating with their house made green salsa. Now the breakfast sausage was a last, very last minute add, and I was so very glad I added them. Like I said in an earlier unrelated review, good things come in threes. These there little pigs were outstanding. Their texture was meaty with no extra fillers other than pork, herbs, and seasoning. The pork flavor was fresh and delicious, and I was very fond of the herb flavor the sausages offered. These little guys were also tender and bursting with natural pork juices. Winner, winner! I ate at the bar and the bar keep was Allison. She was friendly and provided outstanding service. read more

We visited Working Class on a Friday night around 7:30 pm, just missing happy hour unfortunately, but the prices were still reasonable. We were able to get seating outside pretty quickly and were served quickly as well, with the appetizers coming out at one time and the entrees all together for a party of 6, which I always appreciate! The general tso cauliflower is as good as everyone says it is! We also tried the wings, with Cajun dry rub and Buffalo sauce on the side, really they were pretty disappointing if I'm being honest. Foster Farms wings from the freezer section at the grocery store are better. Maybe it was just the particular seasoning but will definitely not be wasting stomach space on that again. They have a nice variety of ciders to choose from which is a big plus, and I heard great things from our table about the working class burger! Over all, am willing to go back, especially on a busy weekend night, because of how easy it was to get seated and the great service, but am not overly thrilled by the quality of the eats. Went here for breakfast this AM with my neighbor and sat at the bar. Service was so friendly and quick despite it being a bit busy (11:30 ish on a Saturday)He had the Bloody Mary and said it was one of the best in north park and I had coffee that was brewed fresh. As for the food, excellent!!! Really fresh he had the burrito and I had the Table Sandwich. Bread was toasted but very soft. Be aware portions are quite large we both took half to go home. Thought the value for the quality and portion size was excellent. Can't speak highly enough of the service from the bartender, (I believe his name was Jermaine) very friendly and professional. Date of visit: February 19, 2018 Our friend Jocy (holla!) was celebrating her birthday month, and so we made our way to one of North Park's newest bars/eateries - Working Class. Pretty nice and homey indoor area, albeit a bit on the small side (the six of us had to get comfortable squeezing in on the table top); the patio area is much more expansive and roomy. We split appetizers of the mac and cheese with bacon (normally $9 total, without the bacon it's $7) and the General Tso Cauliflower (normally $8). The mac and cheese was just the way I like it - gooey and cheesy - but the General Tso Cauliflower = superb! It had a nice crispness to it, and that sauce was simply amazing. My order was for the Fish and Chips ($12); pretty crispy fish fillets served with some decently seasoned fries. I washed it down with a Boochcraft Grapefruit Hibiscus Heather ($7.50) - nice and refreshing, and just what needed to cap off the long weekend. Although I like how Working Class uses local potables for their beer and wine list, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that when I got my water glass, there was still lipstick on the rim... Still, despite the lack of parking nearby and some growing pains, I wish the friendly folks at Working Class the best - especially with those $5 appetizers from 4-7pm (which is why I added the word "normally" to the prices I listed above)! read more

This is a new neighborhood bar right in the middle of North Park where there is plenty of competition for brews and bites. The food here is very affordable as someone else remarked that no item is greater than $12. It's an extremely canine friendly establishment with a section on the menu featuring edibles for dogs. During my visit, I swear there were more bowzas on the premises than bartenders. I picked Paul's Meatballs ($8) for an appetizer. It came as five meatballs resting on a layer of marinara sauce with sliced parmesan cheese on top. Five pieces of toasted sourdough wedges were also provided. I really liked that the sauce was spicy and not just a bland tomato flavor. For an entree, I chose the Salisbury Steak ($12). The dish was served as a patty of ground sirloin in a dark mushroom gravy with smashed red potatoes and green beans on the side. The meat was not loosely bound which resulted in a firm texture like a burger cooked well done. Hopefully this spot can keep their costs contained as there are so many similar choices up and down 30th St as well as University Ave and El Cajon Blvd. read more

The owner of Working Class, Jeff, cheated me out of an FTR as he opened a day early, so congrats to you Ken B.! Today was the "official" opening of Working Class, though Jeff told me Monday would be a friends and family affair and I joked about crashing it. Probably could have. Didn't know he opened his doors yesterday so I had planned to come today for happy hour. First impressions: great! Very friendly staff, and they were apologizes for any "first day" problems even though there weren't any, at least not for my party. It looks like they were confused on where a few orders were going, but nothing major. All their beers are $6-$7, with just one at $8. On happy hour (4pm-7pm), they're all $4. Great deal, and decent long hours is a plus. They have 6 or so starters that are all $5, and they're only $8 or so to start with anyway, so overall a pretty affordable restaurant for North Park. I had the Thorn Street Barrio Lager and a plate of meatballs for $5. I expected to see 2 or 3 meatballs but was pleasantly surprised to be survived 5 decent sized meatballs with a tasty red sauce. My friend got the general tso cauliflower, which was great. Wasn't my first pick as I wanted some meat, but it was tasty and a very generous portion. I will definitely be coming back to try their $5 wings and maybe the mac & cheese. I looked over the regular menu and didn't see any item over $12. VERY affordable for North Park, and a nod to the Working Class title. I predict these prices won't last, especially the $8 burger. Not sure how big it is, but based on the app sizes I don't doubt this will be one of North Park's best value. Cute little patio in back with full size jenga, will be great when it warms up a bit. Heard great things about this place and we wanted to try it out. We were greeted immediately and sat at a high top. I asked the waiter for food suggestions and he was spot on. We ordered: Coconut shrimp- YUM! The sweet and sour sauce went perfectly with the crispy coconut shrimp. Of course i wish there was more shrimp but the shrimp was tasty and cooked great. Reuben sandwhich- ONE OF THE BEST REUBENS IVE EVER HAD! My grandpa makes a mean Reuben but this was a great sandwich and next time im in CA. I will def have to come back here. It also came with a good amount if fries. Overall I was happy with my sandwich Burger- my friend ordered this and she said she loved it. It also came with a lot of fries. There was also a section in the back with a lot of yard games. It was a little chilly when my friend and I went so we didn't get to play. But next time we will play. While walking to a brewery we noticed this spot and decided to come in. Its open seating and they'll bring menus to you once they spot you. Since this place is new it was pretty pack with curious people walking by. The inside is nice and has many screens surrounding the bar area. We ordered a beer ( they have a good amount on draft) and two appetizers. Mac and cheese- this was creamy and the breadcrumbs on top added for a nice texture when biting into a spoonful. Mixed fries:sweet potato and regular- These were done really well! Overall, I think the place is cute and will be a cool place to hangout after some of the hype goes down.
