Update: The owner emailed me and refunded one of the two holiday hooch tickets. My review was triggered by an email announcing a separate business around this concept she was starting. It seems that they have made some improvements to the model/concept that started as Holiday Hooch that would be a part of this separate effort, but I have not attended this last round. I would encourage the owner to foster an authentic drink making experience as only an artisan bartender could provide. read more

Loved my experience and can't wait to sign up for another class! I did one of their build-your-own-planter-box with succulents and it was super fun. The vibe is laid back (cool jams in the background, $1.00 PBRs) and the instructors were knowledgeable, patient and funny. Last night's Sewing 101 Class @ Workshop SF was led by the fantastically talented and delightful Carmen Sanchez. If you need costumes for Burning Man, Halloween or any other custom sewing she is a virtuouso! (Does all the displays at Anthropologie on Market too!) What a true talent and bright spirit. I not only re-learned to sew on a sewing machine (had not done it for at least 15 years), I left with my own sock puppet and a beer koozie boht of which are super cute and which I could certainly give as gifts. Was well well well worth the time and very reasonable class fee. I now feel confident enough to take the quilting class and to sew my own duvet cover and other simple things - with a LOT of future practice:) If you've been tossing around in your head the idea to learn to sew this is by far the easiest, most enjoyable way to get a start. read more

OMG I love everything about this place: It's affordable, stylish, friendly and they have awesome teachers who don't hold back on sharing what they know. Workshop came to our office plaza to help us celebrate Earth Week. Everyone was invited to make terrariums, and had a total blast. Men and women of all ages were super excited about this activity. Absolutely LOVE this place. I've gone to two outstanding classes and can't wait to go to more!! The first class I went to was a cocktail making course that was so fun and great way to kick-off a night out. The second was a flower arranging workshop. While polar opposite classes, both were fun, enlightening, and an all around blast. The teachers definitely know how to teach and have a great time! So a few weeks into my new gig and they say " you need to come up with the holiday party"... yay. A bunch of Architects, what do you do, white linen and fancy food? Hell no! I took the group of 20 to Workshop and we had a blast! The Terrarium & cocktail class was a riot! Everyone had fun, we totally loosened up and simply enjoyed ourselves. The instructors were total entertainment and the shop itself was amazing. Its hard to describe the day, we just had an all around good time! Kelly was tolerant to my OCD through the entire booking/set up, thank you Kelly, you are the best! Just to note - we made a day of it - had some great pizza around the way before class then ended up in a corner bar after - it's Monday morning back in the office and everyone is really happy and wants to go back... today. If you are thinking of an office event and not sure about Workshop - have no fear and GO! read more

I took my first (of many, I think) class at workshop last week - the screenprinting basics class - and had a great time. The teacher did a great job explaining the process and getting us going. Although the class was extremely basic, it was perfect for my level (can't wait to take a deeper dive now!). I'll definitely be back for sewing classes and/or cheese making classes. read more

Just back from That's My Jam, a canning 101 class taught by nicole from Farmlicious. This is my first class with workshop so I didn't know what to expect. Class was scheduled for 2.5 hours we ended up finishing an hour early. It was a very hands on class, however we did skip over some steps for the sake of saving time. It was really informative. I think this class is must if you're thinking about starting canning. I learnt lots more from this class than from the internet/jam cookbooks. At the end we all got to take home a jar of organic peach and cherry jam! read more

I am from Oklahoma. I recently found a very old painting called " Little Einias". I appears it was entered into a contest. The artist name (the best I can figure out) is H. McAllister Gr----- . The back part of the name is missing. The address on it is (what I can make out) is ???? Broderick San Fransisco. Maybe someone can help me identify the piece and who painted it. It is a very old and the canvas appears to be hand done with what appears to be original tacks hammered in on the frame. The painting is one of many flowers in what appears to be an oil painting. Last week I took my second sewing class at Workshop: Sewing 102. Aaron, the teacher, was awesome. The class was fun and Aaron did a great job of making zippers and buttonholes much less scary. I think these are two things that often intimidate self taught sewers like myself. With the skills I learned in the class, I have already been able to tackle new projects on my own. In class we sewed a simple zippered pouch. The next day I was able to follow online directions for a zippered pouch with a lining. Today I finished a lined grocery tote with a pocket. I had tried these types of projects on my own, but it was the hands on experience I gained at Workshop that made sense of everything. If Workshop had some more advanced sewing classes, like making skirts and simple blouses, I would totally take them. read more

Took the "Hooch 101" class there last night. The social aspect was fun, and the liquors were top notch, but the actual "class" part of it was lacking. The instructor sped through things, wasn't clear about things step by step, and didnt write anything down on a white board or anything. When making the drinks we all had to keep asking what the steps were again. I don't remember anything I learned. I'm glad there were notes at the END to take with us, but the instruction could have been more clear and structured. read more

While they have the potential to be amazing, this place is utterly disorganized and and unprofessional. I signed up for 4 different classes over a period of several months and 3 of the 4 classes got canceled the day before class. And for 1 of the classes, I only found out about the cancellation because I emailed them to confirm that the class was still going on. They have *never* refunded me for any of the class cancellations. That being said, the 1 class I did go to - intro to sewing - was quite good. I signed up for the next level sewing class - and it was ... you got it - cancelled at the last minute and I still haven't been refunded. I so want to rave about this place because in theory they are great. Unfortunately in reality - they suck. read more

I took a Terrariums class with Workshop. The class and the instructor were both awesome; however all the plants started dying within a week or so. So I wanted to get in touch with the instructor to ask her what to do but couldn't find her email address. I emailed info@workshopsf.com for the address and haven't heard back in a week. Jeez, all I am asking for is contact info; is it that hard to respond? It was a class for 45$ and I was very excited to signup for more; but not getting back to a simple request for more than a week is a real turn off. read more

I feel somewhat bad for only giving two stars to this place, only because the teacher of that class was really super nice. I was really disappointed. I took the ScreenPrinting for newbies class, and I guess I was expecting different. I've never screen printed before but I have done a bit of lithography and etching. I had the impression that we would be screen printing our own designs. But the class just makes you practice screening already made designs from old screens. Which wasn't that fun or informative for me. I think the wording for the class on the website is a little vague, honestly, and I feel they should've really emphasized the fact that you would not be using your own designs or burning them onto screens. It's not that expensive for a class($38), but I felt that was too much for what I got out of the class. I just really wasn't into printing other people's designs. I don't think this class was aimed for artists. read more

It's a cool space and I really wanted to like it, but if you're thinking about taking the agate and geode class...don't. All you do is paint a rock, and then glue another rock onto a cheap ring. I felt like it was really disappointing and definitely not worth the $40-some dollars I spent. The instructor also breezed through the wire wrapping part and you couldn't even see what she was doing. read more

I just took the sewing boot camp workshop here on Saturday and it was amazing! Haley was such a great teacher. She was patient, kind, accommodating, and energetic throughout the 6 hours course. There is a lot of information given during the 6 hour workshop, but I never felt overwhelmed or lost. Haley takes her time with helping everyone and making sure your happy with your project. I left with 4 completed projects. I have so much more confidence in sewing beginner projects. I highly recommend this class for anyone who has never touched a sewing machine. The class provides everything so you don't have to bring anything with you. Parking was not too bad on a Saturday morning even with the Blue Angels in town. Just arrive 5-10 minutes before so you have time to look. The bathroom at this facility looks dirty, but it was in fact very clean. It has just been designed by creative people read more

i took the sewing 101 class - it was $25 for three hours. our instruction, kelly malone, is an incredibly thorough instructor. not only does she relay her teaching clearly, you can also tell she really enjoys doing these classes. so much so that we actually went 30 mins over schedule! i'm so fortunate this is only a few blocks from my apt, can't wait to take more! read more

I am officially certified to make outstanding bloody marys thanks to the Workshop. Went here with some friends for the class and was horrified to learn the Zeitgeist secret ingredient, which turns out to be essential. Can't tell you what it is though. You've got to take the workshop and get certified to find out. Only problem is that your friends start showing up for brunch every Sunday...and sometimes Wednesday....when they realize how amazing your BMs are. I haven't been sober since August. The happiest place on earth title goes to the Workshop! Well, at least for me since I lack total motivation on DIY projects. I tried to get a few of my friends to join, but they were either too busy or not interested. I thought that being by myself would not be as much fun; however, once I finished my first beer coozy and actually got to use it, I knew I was in good company. I learned how to thread a sewing machine, where I could get an affordable one, how to hem a pant leg, what the different dials on the machine do, made a sock monster... Very interactive, Kelly is an excellent instructor no matter how much experience you have. She is very happy (not in an annoying way) and has great stories about past attendees to keep you entertained; she also encourages you to take part in everything. She teaches you the basics and then lets you go to town; I was hesitant but gained confidence once I started my first project. I had a blast and plan to go back... I told my friends how awesome it was to get my creative on, they are signing up for the next workshop. I'm also signing up my Mother for a fun little afternoon outing. read more

This place is what SF has needed for YEARS, and I'm so glad to see it flourishing. As my late Grandmother (rest in peace) used to say, "I can't find a good drapery man to save my life," her way of bitching about the decline of trades and practical skill sets. There is almost nowhere you can go to learn a thing like SEWING and thus, I have gone 41 years without being able to do much more than sew on a button. I have mastered just about all the womanly arts (ahem), but sewing has remained akin to voodoo in my mind. I took Carmen's class recently and was totally empowered by making a beer koozy and a sock doll and now I'm obsessed with making monster dolls. I took the terrarrium workshop last spring and enjoyed that immensely as well........there isn't a thing I DON'T like about this place, and I only wish it had been around 15 years ago. I'm signed up for cheesemaking next month and will be taking more advance sewing classes..........and if they are ever able to expand their space, I beg that they introduce furniture making/repair classes! read more

I recently took the sewing 102 class (hemming and alterations) at Workshop and really enjoyed it! The classes are incredibly reasonable, and the instructor, Kelly, was fantastic! I've taken quite a few sewing classes over the years, and I still feel like I learned a lot in this class. I think what really made that possible was the format of the class. We did a quick refresher project at the very beginning, and then everyone brought out their projects to hem/alter. Then Kelly would demo how to pin/sew each project as people were ready to get started. After that, we all got to work sewing and altering our garments. I left with a shirt that I will actually wear now, instead of leaving it to just take up space in my closet. Even though I brought in tops to alter, I still got to see how to hem pants/skirts, alter t-shirts, and turn regular jeans into skinny jeans. I am looking forward to taking another class there! read more

i used to think i will never ever ever touch a sewing machine in my life, when i was a kid i also used to think "eww sewing things are too complicated just like the messed up thread, & i hav no idea how people could sew, oh no i dont think i would go that direction", however fate & curiosity has brought me to take this class to get over my fear of using the sewing machine. so i decided & really pushed myself to get "sewing 101: hand & machine basics" $36 for 3 hours. the ambiance of this place is very laidback, arty & crafty feel, its not too fancy, but it's cool funky & comfy feeling. there are only 5 peeps for this class & kelly is the instructor & she's really cool, friendly, & very much herself, nothing pretentious. She's really attentive, cheerful,always try to make eye-contact, knowledgable & really know what's she's doing! in 3 hours i've made my own beer-koozie & my cute sock monster!! I'm surprised that my partner is saying "amazing" to the monster sock i made, he definitely surprised i could make a doll! I've taken 2 sewing classes (machine basics + buttons and zippers) and a power tools class. I have been a closet DIYer for many years, but wanted to gain some experience and insider knowledge without having to waste hours and $$ on supplies just because I would make mistakes. Here I was forewarned about easy mistakes, what I could do to avoid them and what better alternatives are out there when planning and executing a project. While I'm not quite ready to open a shop on Esty, I am armed with way more confidence to walk into a fabric shop or Lowe's to ask not just questions, but the right questions to help complete my projects. read more

Unprofessional and disorganized classes. Emailing owner regarding missing pizza recipes from Pizza on the Grill class from APRIL of this year. Mark from Brooklyn transcribed incomplete pizza recipes from photos on his phone onto a makeshift chalkboard promising to email us complete recipes. Fast forward to AUGUST when the owner finally forwards Mark's recipe consisting of cut and paste snippets of recipes claiming as his own. Owner offered me a free class of which I declined (why the HELL would I go back?) since I only wanted the recipes I paid for. Agreed to attend next class in SEPTEMBER to pick up recipes. Was not posted class was moved to backyard of building of which street level concurrent screen print instructor knew nothing about and looked at me like a crazy person. Emailed owner that parking is terrible and cannot go there again (unlike bicyclists who do not wear helmets or follow the rules of the road-may they meet their maker sooner than later, I actually have to commute to the city via automobile) who happily agreed to Email and send via post, the recipes of which I am STILL WAITING. Stopped by again in OCTOBER and mustached guy presented me with 2 pages with 2 recipes without a fuss (Seriously?!!!!!!). As for the owner I can only presume she is in hospital or already dead. read more

wow, if only I heard about this place before. what an amazing experience and great training. i just took the beginners sewing bootcamp class this past Sat and Aaron was a fantastic instructor. very down to earth, straightforward, thorough and always welcoming of questions. i didn't realize i was going to learn so much and work on so many projects in, what I thought was, a small amount of time. the class was scheduled from 11-6pm but we went over until 7pm, yet it was all worth it. super enjoyed, great teachers, good price and training. the only thing to improve there are the bathrooms....so many people sharing 1 tiny stall and sink wasn't working to thoroughly clean hands. read more
