We took our vehicle to the nearest auto repair and they confirmed it was an issue with the alternator and at the current rate, we wouldn't make it back home without repairing it. Although helpful, they unfortunately could not service our vehicle due to being short staffed. Knowing this was an alternator issue we called several other auto repair businesses (including a Honda dealership) and no one had any availability until the following week; it was currently Wednesday. Losing hope and already thinking of alternative ways to get home we called Traverse City Public Service Garage (TCPSG) and they luckily had someone available to re-diagnose and potentially service our vehicle (it was about 1pm at this time). Upon arrival they were able to verify the issue, order the faulty part from one of their local suppliers, have it delivered, and installed it in about 4 hours or so. While there was an element of luck that came into play (available mechanic, supplier with the part, time of day, etc.), the service we received was both friendly and fair all things considered. The good folks at TCPSG got our vehicle back up and running and we ultimately got back home later that evening safely and in one piece. The first person who looked at it thought the AC compressor needed to be replaced to be safe to drive but they had a second person look at it and he was able to offer a quick fix to get us up and going. We were ready to leave it and have it fixed when their AC person was available but they were honest and gave us a better option even though it cost them business. At drop-off, I spoke with Mary Jean, who agreed over the phone that I could pay the repair balance in installments since I needed to use my savings to purchase a temporary beater car. Based on that agreement, I went ahead and bought an inexpensive vehicle and waited for the repairs. Once the work was completed, the entire agreement was suddenly denied. I was then contacted by Deb, who immediately began pressuring me to either pay the full balance upfront or sell my car to them at an extremely low and unrealistic price. When I refused, she informed me they would start charging $100 per month just to keep my repaired vehicle on the lot--something never disclosed in advance. She repeatedly referenced a supposed "normal" rate of $100 per day as if it were a threat, even though none of this was part of the original conversation with Mary Jean. The behavior felt strategic and manipulative, designed to corner me into selling them my car. When I arrived with the $2,000 I had borrowed from a friend, the visible shock on Deb's face said everything--she clearly expected I'd have no choice but to give in. The entire situation made me feel like they were taking advantage of someone they assumed couldn't push back. The store manager refused to speak with me by phone and insisted on email only, adding to the frustration. Throughout the ordeal, I received dismissive remarks, including being told I "couldn't be trusted" to pay--even though their last-minute changes were the only reason the situation escalated. I genuinely cannot understand how a business operates this way and stays open. Between the shifting terms, undisclosed fees, pressure tactics, and lack of basic professionalism, this was one of the worst experiences I've had with any repair shop. I would strongly advise others to avoid Olsen's entirely.

It's always scary to walk blindly into a shop to get some work done, especially with my limited…read moreunderstanding of how cars work, and that's what I did here. The price for labor at Keystone is reasonable, especially compared with other shops in the Traverse City area. I was given an estimate for the repairs which they suspected I needed, but once they popped the hood, they found it wasn't quite as serious than they initially expected. Rather than make those repairs anyway, and charge me an extra hour of labor plus parts (which I've experienced before from a more dishonest, mainstream auto repair shop), they reduced the price from my estimate and made the correct repairs. Not only that, but they knew my situation was difficult, and that I needed to travel several hours by car that same evening, so they began the repairs immediately in order to get me on the road before the shop closed rather than the next morning. All around a good experience and an honest mechanic, and I will return the next time my vehicle inevitably needs work.

I also had installed a tow bar on our car that used to rattle when the old exhaust would move under pressure over time... and that noise no longer exists!!! My case may have been custom, and I am a hard man to please, but the work was done professionally for the cost of just one (and there are many) of the parts that would be needed from our car parts catalog! Having my car towed to Cliff's, I had left a note for the service team to use a manufactured starter to save money as I'm selling the car. I was first charged $150 to analyze the problem (as the car was dead), then upon my getting a new replacement battery to use, was charged another $150 to remove the old battery and install the new one..wow! (This is a free service at many car parts stores and usually takes less than ten minutes.) then instead of replacing the starter with a remanufactured unit as requested (cost $227 to $284), an expensive New starter was installed at a cost of $575 for the part and $375 for labor. This brought the bill for what should have been a $700 fix into a whopping $1200+ expense with no discount offered by the owner went questioned about it. He referred to a remanufactured (and guaranteed) replacement unit as poorly made...I'm not that stupid to believe it. Should you decide to gave any work done at Cliff's, get an estimate first. I will not be going back.
