It seems as if we have been doing a lot of vacationing this year, but really it's been little day trips or one day getaways, and some of them accidental. Take for example our two trips to Savannah this year, both to drop off and pick up our son from a week long camp sponsored by the U.S. Air Force. We have a good amount of points earned on our credit cards which add up to several free hotel stays. So, we decided to go a day early to drop him off just to spend some family time and returned a day early to pick him up and have some quality alone time. Being the adventurous person I am I figured "why not check out some new places" on the return since we had to do the drive anyway! We decided to check out nearby Beaufort, SC and discovered a lovely little restaurant called WREN. Shrimp & Grits are practically irresistible to me... so when I saw them while perusing the online menu I knew I had to have them! However, they only serve them on the dinner menu. So I time our 4 hour drive from Atlanta to include enough activities to land us at Wren @ 5pm when the dinner menu begins! - - - THE FOOD * PIMENTO CHEESE APPETIZER (4 stars) | $10 Warm pimento cheese, dill pickles, smoked almonds & grilled toast points on a bed of lettuce. My wife ordered this and for the most part seemed satisfied with it because of its unusual couplings. I was a tad less enthusiastic about it, but I'm always happy when she is happy. * ORCHARD SALAD (4 stars) | $9 Apples, grapes, candied pecans, blue cheese, green onions, mustard poppy seed dressing on a bed of lettuce. * SHRIMP & GRITS (4.5 stars) | $26 Applewood bacon, cherry tomatoes, red onion, Carolina gold cheese grits & parmesan cream sauce. Overall I thought they were very good and particularly liked the grits being cakes. The sauce was rich and flavorful and really elevated the dish! Drinks - Water - - - THE INTERIOR I LOVE THE VIBE of this place! The muted colors, the wood, the brick, the steel and the glass are all a very pleasing mix of media to the eyes. I fancy myself to be a dilettante of artistic design and this place feels perfectly balanced between casual and fancy, upscaled and earthy, contemporary and rustic. The furniture seems like something out of Pottery Barn (one of my favorite stores), yet they also include a little whimsy such as the oversized Adirondack chair near the front entrance. - - - SIDE NOTE FOR MOVIE FANS - When FORREST GUMP went on his cross-country run, one of the steel bridges features in the movie was Woods Memorial Bridge (just steps from Wren). The specific scene from the movie is when he was bombarded by reporters asking him why he was running. His response: "I just felt like running." One of the business photos posted by another Yelper shows a fun sign that says "Forrest Gump ran that way (pointing south), but you should eat this way (pointing towards Wren's front door)!" LOL - - - FINAL THOUGHTS BEAUFORT, SC is a charming little town surrounded by marshlands and barrier islands. There is a beautiful beach and lighthouse on nearby Hunting Island, gorgeous church ruins north in the town of Yemassee and a real opportunity to see dolphins in the waters surrounding Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, just a short romantic walk south of Wren. I say all of that to let you know Wren and its surroundings are truly an experience for those traveling the Mid-Southeastern Seaboard. It's hard to separate the food from the ambiance and the charm of the town. But just like any great dish, the combination of all its ingredients makes it special. Food was good but we felt extremely rushed through our meal. We ordered a cocktail and appetizer and when those were delivered, we placed our dinner order which showed up literally 5 minutes later. We were in the middle of the appetizer and had only had a couple of sips of our cocktails when dinner was brought out. We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch here. This is a chic restaurant with a interior countryside charm. The meals are proportionally large. The kids menu consisted of chicken fingers, mac and cheese (rigatoni with a white sauce), or pasta. We ordered off of the lunch menu and I felt it was a little pricey for lunch, however I'm sure most of the restaurants in town compare ($12 for kids menu to $16 for a double burger and all meals came with French fries). We arrived upon opening (11:30-ish to 8-ish as the sign reads; take that for what you will). I had the chicken salad sandwich & seafood bisque which were both delicious, others in my party had the smash burger, butcher (roast beef sandwich); (needed more of the comeback sauce), & kids mac & cheese, & fountain drinks. Although we didn't try anything, the drink menu looked interesting. I would love a smaller lunch plate option: 1/2 sandwich with a cup of soup. Otherwise the service was great! A very cute place located in the central Historic District of Beaufort. The Wren has an airy industrial feel with table spaciousness located where possible. We came for lunch having made reservations on Open Table. I'm glad we did because the place was super busy. The portions are massive and delicious. I had the chicken salad sandwich which came with fries. The photo dies not doubt justice. It was seriously huge. My husband had the Mexican style Shrimp Salad which was also huge. He said it was very good. Not good for the waistline for sure. If I'm ever back in beautiful Beaufort I will definitely return here. Highly recommended! read more

Wren (Beaufort SC) Restaurant Review (2/20/2025) We have been to Wren many times, specifically for their Thursday hamburger special, which is $10 for a burger and fries, which normally costs close to $20. One must make advance reservations as they usually book up fast. With that said, we made reservations for 6 people at 6:00 pm way back in November. We arrived a few minutes early. FYI, it takes a good 1/2 hour or so to get there. The hostess gave us a table right next to the main front door. The door was broken and outside was 40 degrees, very cold and breezy coming from the entrance. One would need a winter coat, gloves, and a hat to endure the cold created due to the broken door. Either the door should have been repaired or fixed somehow for customers to feel comfortable during their meal. They had many tables open that were reserved for much later times. They refused to give us a warmer table and were extremely rude. We reminded them our reservation was made in November and we drove over from Bluffton. They flatly said take this table or leave! When we tried talking to the manager, he basically implied "tough $hit" and would not even TRY to work things out or whatever. I have never experienced such rudeness and arrogance at any restaurant, especially here in our wonderful "Southern hospitality" environment!! Needless to say, I will never go back. Sorry, but I had to blow off some steam as my wife and I were embarrassed by this entire ordeal because we had 2 other couples as guests that have never been there before. read more

I sat at the bar for a solo dinner. Service was well paced for me having dinner by myself, though I am used to having bartenders check in more frequently to see if everything was good, if I need an additional drink, etc. I had the shrimp and grits which was a solid version (not my favorite, but I'm spoiled living in Charleston). We made reservations for New Year's Eve. Wren has a warm, cozy atmosphere, elegant but not stuffy. Our table for 6 was ready when we arrived. Waitstaff gets 5 stars- our waitress was very sweet and attentive. The food was amazing, and the menu prices are fairly reasonably. Decided to have a nice Friday afternoon lunch away from home and decided to give Wren a try. As this would be our third attempt (once closed, once on a two-hour wait), we tempered our expectations. Showed up a few minutes before noon and were promptly seated. Great start! Server came by a couple of minutes later and gave us an intro to the menu. Ordered a couple of glasses of wine, a salad (Chicken Salad w/fruit) and fish tacos. Food came out quickly and was great tasting. Portions were perfect for lunch, quite satisfying... Interior decor was pleasant, noise level was good - not too loud even though there are many hard surfaces - just the right amount to add some energy to the environment. Visiting beautiful Beaufort and booked this place weeks in advance. Started off with the Tomato Basil soup and warm pimento cheese. The soup is still on my mind a few days later...the food to follow was just as good. We were there for lunch and had the Toasted Pecan Cranberry Chicken Salad sandwich and the Low Country Cuban. Only complaint is that we booked the reservation a week ahead and were seated in a dark corner near kitchen and bathroom. Would have liked to been in the front of restaurant near windows. Booked through open table. Might have had something to do with it. Next time will call to make reservation. I suggest they make that corner more appealing. Find the attention to detail declining. Went yesterday for dinner and disappointed on many levels: -Worst wine list ever. Only 6 white wines and they were out of two. -Hamburger Night but while special price was $10, all add ons were ala cart. With cheese @$2, bacon @3, etc. final burger was $17, not a great value. -Bun for burger was terrible-seemed like out of a Wonderbread wrapper. Expect something better as the "special." Fries came out cold. Meat greasy. -Wife had Mahi Mahi and asked for sauce to be on side. Came out on fish - very heavy sauce - tasted pasty like it had flour as main ingredient. -Basically a fish and sauce dish. Came with 3 small tomatoes and one scrimp. I wish I could recommend Wren, but I can't. We've eaten there three times in the past few months and each time has been a disappointment. While the food is good, you go to a restaurant for more than just the food. The entire experience hinges on the food, service and ambiance. On the last two, Wren fails miserably. And it all starts at the top, with the management. If they fail to train their staff, everything else falls apart. When we most recently visited Wren, two of our four entrees were lukewarm at best. We tried repeatedly to get the attention of SOMEONE who worked there, but to no avail. And they were not busy at all. I asked one waiter to get our waiter - which he later admitted he never did. By the time I had to get the manager and they brought two new entrees, the other two people in our party had finished their meals. All in all, not an enjoyable experience for our family. Meanwhile, the manager was hanging out at the bar with her cohort chatting up the two customers at the bar. It doesn't take two bartenders to service two bar patrons! Get out into the restaurant, go table to table and ask how their meal is - show some interest in your customers and their experience! It's simply not that hard! Train your waitstaff to look for empty appetizer plates and remove them. Train them to look for low or empty water, tea or wine glasses and take appropriate action. Train them to come by a few minutes after each course is delivered to ensure it is to the customers satisfaction. None of that has occurred during our last two visits. The waitstaff walks quickly by tables, not stopping to see if there's anything that is needed. Other restaurant employees clean tables without ever glancing around to see if anyone might be trying to get their attention. Insofar as the ambiance, it's loud. It was difficult for our party of four to hear one another due to the poor selection of materials to buffer noise. Doubt we'll ever go back. Three strikes and you're out. read more

We had the ham and cheese panini (delicious mustard), the smash burger (grilled onions were excellent), and the corn and jalapeño grilled shrimp salad (shrimp were cooked perfectly). Best fried tomatoes ever. The staff knows the menu and makes good recommendation. However (and I hate howevers), the twisted Caesar salad is a hot mess. Too much going on in one place. To start the service right off the bat was good. We didn't know they closed in between lunch and dinner but they snuck us in last minute which I know is a hassle so I appreciate. There lunch menu is lacking but have a few things. I had the roast beef sandwich and in all honesty it was fatty. We also had their cheese dip and it was almost like something I could've made in the microwave at home. I haven't tried their dinner menu so I do not want to knock the place down because I hear it good! It's just hard to find the time with their awkward hours. The place is very well decorated and I would definitely come in again to get their shecrab soup. So all In all it's alright. Not the best lunch spot in the area but not the worst.
