My husband and I were famished after working on a day long project at a customer's home on Fripp Island and needed a quick bite. For starters, I got the Lemonade Cocktail, it was very refreshing and not too strong. I ordered the Tomato Basil Bisque Soup and it was hands down the best I have ever had! I also ordered the grilled shrimp appetizer that came with delicious sauce and crusty bread. My husband ordered the shrimp and scallops with linguini. He absolutely loved it! Fun location with average food. Lots of interesting sounding items but the variety is no replacement for quality. We came here for lunch because someone in the party had dietary restrictions. As in, she was on a diet. We had a decent sized party and no reservations so it was nice that they were able to seat us pretty quickly. When our server came around taking drink orders, I asked about one of the rose options that I suspected might be on the sweeter side. She had to call someone else over to answer my question--and stopped taking our order in the meantime! I was fairly embarrassed to be holding everyone up from a good time, especially because the drink connoisseur took several minutes to get to the table. I quickly said I was wondering if any of the roses were on the sweeter side and she immediately called out the option I had initially asked about. She offered to bring me a taste, which I accepted, but I wasn't sure why this wasn't the default option to begin with since I was only asking about this particular rose. It was on the sweeter side, but still not sweet enough for my taste, so I opted for a standard white. We ended up ordering a bottle of that rose for the table anyway. Go figure! Most of our party ordered appetizers for our meal: fried green tomato stack, crab cakes, flat bread, southwest and caesar salads. And one chicken sandwich. The "sharable plates" were definitely big enough for a small lunch. But they were all a little off. The caesar salad, for example, was mostly spinach. The mushroom flatbread had enough arugula to be a salad itself--and all of the toppings came off in one bite due to the globs of cheese tying the toppings together. The crab cakes were over-fried and super lemony, with an aioli that looked like spicy tuna but tasted like plain mayonnaise. The fried green tomatoes were absolutely the show stealers, and this was in large part due to the grits. They seemed to be full of bacon. Hard to say no to bacon. We liked the ambiance--high ceilings and alcohol everywhere--but the restroom situation was a bit weird. On our side, there was just one single stall. It turns out, after a long line had formed, that someone peeked their head out of the kitchen and felt sorry for us all waiting, mentioning that there were two restrooms on the other side. No one wanted to leave the line they had waited in for so long, but I took a chance. I stepped outside, into the parking lot as instructed, walked around to the other side of the building, and stepped into a hallway with not one but TWO other single stalls. These were labeled by gender so overall there's a Men's, Women's, and a Unisex stall. I kind of like that! Nothing was bad or wrong, but nothing really worked on its own, either. It was nice to have something that wasn't completely casual for lunch, but I certainly would not come for dinner once other options start to open in the evening. read more

I've come to Wren for many years with my family and have loved it every single time but this was truly the best!! I ordered a the strawberry basil drink and it was refreshing and summery so perfect for this time of year. I then got the shrimp and grits which were so creamy and rich. The best I've had ever in my life! I could eat them all day every day with no complaints whatsoever. The staff is always so nice and the presentation is wonderful along with the actual restaurant being centrally located in downtown Beaufort. This review is for our "visit" from a couple months ago, maybe it's different. Food looked good, unfortunately no one helped us. One worker told us, after waiting a long while, that someone would be by shortly to seat us as they walked past (didn't even take the time to stop).... No one came by, and we waited, and still no one came. Tables and workers were staring at us (including a lady who I think may have been a manager?) as we just stood there with no one even bothering to address us.... It was weird.... Kinda an awkward feeling, being stared at like we walked into the middle of a cult and very clearly didn't belong in the midst of their ritual.... After waiting for a ridiculously long amt of time (more than any rational person would, but the food did look decent) we walked out. Service (or lack of) was so bad, I do t think we would even bother trying it again. read more

We stumbled here as it was near our hotel. We didn't have a reservation but it us recommended. The hostess was happy to seat us. There was one waitress but the service was excellent. The portions are huge! My husband and I split the orchard salad which was yummy, loaded with delicious blue cheese crumbles. He had the crispy flounder and I had the mahi. Both were delicious but either one would've been enough to split. Finished with the lemon cake which was yummy yummy yummy!! Great service, nice atmosphere. I would have given 3.5 stars but decided we really didn't try enough to give it a 3 star rating. Plusses - we had two plates to share, the garlic shrimp and the hummus plate and they were both excellent. Negatives - very limited in their vegetarian or pescatarian options, and only two desserts (both of which were cheesecake). More plusses, well priced wine list, good service. Overall an enjoyable experience but where we were seated, it was not very intimate, and with the lack of menu options, we just decided not to linger. If you eat meat you may fare better! read more

As a local I only wish to post good reviews, but after 3 attempts to have lunch at Wren, I felt the need to steer our great tourists elsewhere. Call it my civic duty. The most recent visit entailed waiting in line without any acknowledgement from the hostess. Finally we went to the bar instead and after a glass of water the bartender literally disappeared. So to be fair (hence the 3 stars), I have never had the opportunity to sample the food. However the menu appears to be lacking in anything more interesting than the sandwiches and salads that you can get anywhere. We have a wonderful array of great little cafes and restaurants that will deliver a much better experience during your stay in our wonderful city and adjoining islands. Try one of those. read more

Fried green tomatoes were the size of the salad croutons so sent them back. When my salad came out the same size fried green tomatoes were on my salad. So disappointed. Fantastic. Food excellent. We had crispy flounder and shrimp grits. The flounder was perfectly cooked and served with generous rice, beans and corn. The spices and sauce made for a delicious combination. Shrimp and grits; lots of shrimp, grits, cheese, green onions, bacon.... It was a delight. We left happy and full. Wren is a such nice restaurant! The food & the ambiance was on point! The ambiance was very nice & had an upscale feel to it with the candles and low lighting this would be perfect for a date night or a celebratory dinner. I started out with the kale salad I really enjoyed the creamy basil dressing & the pine nuts that were added, however I did not like the sundried tomatoes they could have been left off. With my salad I ordered the lump crab fritters that were soooo good & full of crab meat. It comes with a side of red pepper dipping which was absolutely amazing & a nice addition to the crab. Before I head back to Atlanta on Friday I plan to return just for the crab fritters. read more

Our first visit was for our anniversary. Delicious meal and friendly staff thought it was strange we were not offered dessert. But decided the food was so good it wasn't a problem. Second visit the following week and brought our houseguests. Same great food and was offered dessert! The only problem this time was that our plates were never cleared between courses and the service was not very good. Strangest experience. Spent about half an hour trying to get any attention, and we had reservations. No hostess, no waiting staff, just a bartender who was drunk and barely standing, spilling drinks on others' tables. Dirty tables everywhere, and simply no service. We visited Wren for lunch after receiving a few recommendations from the B&B where we were staying. The ambiance is industrial and done well with simple, impactful art, exposed duct work, and great natural light. We sat at the bar and ordered a couple of appetizers to try a little of everything. The food came out fast and was well plated. We enjoyed everything we tried, especially the crab soup. The highlight of our time at Wren was Jenni, the bartender. She had a fun pin-up look and was so down to earth, you felt like you'd been friends for a long time. She offered some great wine suggestions and I really enjoyed the two glasses I had. My husband opted for one of their Bloody Mary options, which was made from a bottled mix, but that he also enjoyed. These seem like a popular thing there - having sat next to the service well, we saw a lot going out! Also seems like they may have a solid regular crowd, as some drinks were being made before they were even ordered and Jenni and the servers seemed familiar with a lot of the guests. The entire staff was professional (you sometimes overhear things, sitting at the bar!) and very nice. We really enjoyed our time here and will definitely be back when next in Beaufort! read more

I am scoring my visit as a 3 but I know they can do better. The southern salad was a strong 5 both in presentation and taste. The smash burger was a 3.5 due to the day old bun and 3 inch stack of arugula with little to none on the mayo and mustard side. The French fries are great and the portion was large. The shellfish bisque was disappointment and I sent it back. I think this has potential but this batch was a salt lick. Now we get to the service part. Our bar tender was attentive but somewhat dismissive. We will be back with hopes that this was an off day. More to follow. read more

Hubby took me to Wren for dinner for my birthday. Took forever to be acknowledged by wait staff. Bar did not have Crowne Royal. No other recommendations offered. No water offered. Food was meh. Steak (with French fries) overpriced, not cooked medium rare how I wanted. Hubby's burger was cold. I think the thing that really killed me was we asked for a takeout box and the waiter dropped it on the floor on the way to our table. The open container landed face-down on the floor and I had to ask for another one. I don't know if he was high or just didn't give a crap. Def NOT a fine dining experience! After a week of disappointing meals in South Carolina, Wren was by far the best place to eat in South Carolina.

This restaurant was adequate - however, we stopped here on the recommendation of a local and probably won't return. The waitress seemed to be miffed that we were taking her away from her napkin folding to wait on us. Water glasses set empty - French fries were served cold and tortilla chips were served stale. After having to run down someone else to run our CC for payment - the waitress later returned with the final check and literally tossed it on the table and stomped over to fold more napkins. On a positive note - the hostess that sat us was amazing and very friendly and helpful. read more

We visited for the first time last week! The location was easy to find and we thought the interior had a nice aesthetic. We both got salads that came out with filling portions and very fresh ingredients. Sometimes salads are disappointing but this one was perfect. The shrimp was incredibly seasoned and juicy. All the staff we interacted with were patient, kind, and the restaurant had an overall good vibe. I can't say enough about the good service and treatment we received from the Wren staff on a recent visit. Everything seemed to drop off when Covid arrived and Ben and Sara left (bartenders) but Ben has returned and it's obvious in the service and attention customers receive. Although the menu has been shortened, we were pleased with the selections. We're happy to be back, happy they got the staff back in order. read more
